after a decade of colorguard and hundreds of shows, it’s this bit of choreography that stands out to me as one of the most effective moments that I have ever witnessed.

the varsity girls are planning on surprising JV by performing their show for them at rehearsal on Saturday! based on last night, it’s going to be a very fun trainwreck.

Hi! I saw you were in a college guard (unless I read that wrong) and I was just curious what it takes to be in a college guard. I'm a junior in high school and I've been doing color guard since the sophomore winter season. I know a lot about the flag, but I know little to nothing about the saber and rifle... I want to learn but our team is so small (only 4 people) and our coaches are already stressed out enough as it is. Any suggestions? Is it necessary I learn saber and rifle?
Hi hon! I’m not on a college team at the moment but I do have some tips. You don’t have to learn weapons right now— plenty of college guards will take you for dance/flag lines only! Don’t be afraid to try something new. Learn everything you can in high school— try to learn weapons if you can! They’re a great skill builder and will make you better on flag. You can learn a ton about weapon from online videos and then ask your instructors to tech your technique if they have the time. Try to get information from older/more experienced members if you can. Honestly, the biggest thing is to spin. Do a ton of basics to make sure you’re strong, to get solid technique, then build on those skills. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!

JV’s first show & varsity’s second show were both yesterday— they did amazing! So proud of how far they’ve both come. They impress me more every day 💕

Hey I am so sorry, I don’t know when this was sent!
To be a good captain, I would say remember your compassion. It can be really frustrating to teach others, especially when they’re close in age to you. The best way to teach is repetition. Make it clear that you’re not trying to be condescending or anything like that; you want to make your corrections positive. If anyone on your team has specific problems you’re not sure how to fix, feel free to reach out!
Bonding can be super fun. There are tons of ice breaking games out there (highly recommend googling some to find one that’s right for y’all!). You can also do things like team breakfasts/lunches to give yourselves time to just get to know one another.
Super sorry if this is hella late, I only just saw this in my inbox! Feel free to reach out if you need anything :)
Hi! I’m going to be captain of my guard this year and we don’t have a coach. I e never been captain before and I’m only a sophomore. This is a college guard so every member is coming from different backgrounds. The high school I came from was top in our division, so I’m used to learning hard work quickly. How can I teach the members who come from much smaller guards with less experience? Barely anyone has weapons experience and some have never used weighted metal poles for flags. Can you give me some advice on the best way to teach them and be a good captain? Also, do you know of any good bonding activities or things I can do to better get to know the members? Sorry for all the questions!

this is my first time posting a gif of JV’s show! If you can’t tell, their show is a little less intense. Both guards compete next Saturday, and I couldn’t be more excited! So much great work got done today and I really can’t wait to see how the varsity show’s score changes. Also can’t wait to hear judges’ reactions and thoughts on the JV show. Tapes were so positive for Varsity at their first show, so I’m hoping they get even better this week!

such a fun week of rehearsals this week! lots of cleaning of our opener and weapon features, Grace learned her solo work, and Mayté and I got to learn some fun new tricks. Their next show is a week from tomorrow, I can’t wait to spend 5 hours working on this show tomorrow 🙌

Terrifying things said in my marching band
“Go back to set 1”
“Because the Trumpets won’t listen, we are running part 2 all the way through”
“Ok water break over!”
“I’m gonna try to jump over all the clarinets and flutes I can.”
“Did someone step on my instrument?”
“DOES ANYONE HAVE AN EXTRA PLUME?!?”
“MIKE BROKE A CAN OF HAIR SPRAY IN THE TUBA ROOM!!”
“Holy shit the directors pissed!”
“This isn’t your jacket”
“No watch me I can colo-I CAN COLOR GAURD WITH MY BARRY CLARINET WATCH”
“a cheerleader broke a prop holy shit we’re walking on the field right now”
*starts performance* “DRUM MAJORS, IS YOUR BAND READY??”
“No I don’t need to count.”
“Watch me chug this Mountain Dew.”
“Guys…we can’t warm up before halftime because the refs won’t let us.”
“They cut funding again.”
