A simple dinner at Angelo’s is all they really need, even for their anniversary.
A few years ago, Sherlock would have never accepted something so simple. Or more like, he would have never even accepted something so sentimental, let alone embark on a romantic date.
But as Sherlock has experienced, what seems like, many lifetimes and many experiences, he doesn’t mind John taking him to somewhere as dull as Angelo’s. And of course, there is the fact that John is taking him.
Rosie has been dropped off at Molly’s for the afternoon and no cases are coming forth to interrupt them. Though even if one did come, Sherlock wouldn’t protest.
But John does seem giddy to take him out, so Sherlock supposes he’ll not wish any to come to their attention.
As they arrive at the corner of the small restaurant, Sherlock instantly notices that the interior is empty. He looks down at John, who seems to be unalarmed.
John opens the door for him without comment, and Sherlock slowly walks in, taking in the restaurant’s alluring set-up. Candles are the only thing illuminating the dark space and all the tables are put to the side.
“John…” Sherlock croaks.
A hand wraps around Sherlock’s waist as the blogger pulls him in, kissing his cheek. “I know it’s not exactly your thing,” John starts, “but I figured it’d be more… pleasant if it were just us.”
Angelo comes from the back, holding a bottle of wine and two glasses. “And I was happy to help!” Angelo adds, gesturing them to their usual table in the corner. “Sit, sit.”
Sherlock huffs a disbelieving laugh as he takes his seat near the window, John sitting beside him.
“No wonder you were so thrilled for dinner,” Sherlock says as Angelo pours their glasses.
“How could I not be?” says John. “I’m quite proud of myself, I’ll have you know.”
“One more,” Angelo advises, lighting another candle between them. “More romantic.”
Sherlock knows it’s a sick paranoia, but he waits for John to deny Angelo’s statement. Of course, nothing comes, John only smiling in thanks. Relief settles in Sherlock’s chest, which is ridiculous since John hasn’t corrected anyone’s assumptions for the past three years. It’s quite literally been heaven.
Angelo leaves to prepare their food, not bothering to ask for their order since he’s memorized their usual by heart.
“This is quite theatrical, John,” Sherlock says.
John hums. “Too much?”
“Not at all,” Sherlock responds, allowing himself to look at John with full adoration. “It’s wonderful.”
“Then it seems I’ve done my part,” John says.
A slow, harmonious melody begins to play. Sherlock blinks and looks in the corner to see Angelo has set up a CD player. The man puts a thumb up in support.
“Right on cue,” John compliments with a chuckle. The blogger stands and extends his hand. Sherlock takes it without hesitation, his heart swelling.
John leads them to the middle of the room, where the space is unusually empty and wide. John places his hand on Sherlock’s waist and Sherlock holds John’s shoulder. John’s free hand takes Sherlocks, wrapping their fingers together, entangling them.
Sherlock’s mind can’t help but drift as he remembers him and John being in this exact same position in preparation for John’s wedding. Sherlock remembers teaching John the specific steps, leading him across the flat, at first clumsily, but then with ease once they repeated the process several times.
Sherlock remembers the ache in his chest when he danced so close to John, chest to chest. He remembers the longing. He remembers how it was torture that they weren’t doing it out of pleasure, but out of practice.
“Sherlock?” John asks, tilting his head to make eye contact with him.
Sherlock blinks and matches his eyes with John. “Yes?”
“Lost you there for a bit,” John tells him, slight concern in his voice. “Alright?”
Sherlock nods, holding John’s hand tighter. “More than.”
John seems to relax at the reassurance. He pulls Sherlock in closer, beginning to move his feet. “It’s just you and me, love,” John whispers against his lips. “It’s just us.”
Sherlock gets lost in John’s eyes as he nods.
They dance slowly, swaying with each other as they just hold one another, bask in each other’s presence. The song crescendos, the lights of London peaking through the window, creating a subtle spotlight.
Sherlock leans down and rests his head on John’s shoulder, burying his face into the blogger’s neck. The scent of John’s cheap shampoo hits his nose, the smell of his cologne is so familiar and comforting.
John’s hand lifts from Sherlock’s waist and runs through the detective’s curls.
“You’re my world, my universe,” John murmurs into Sherlock’s ear, hushed and personal. “I’m never letting you go again, love. Never.”
Sherlock listens silently, kissing John’s neck to show him that he understands, that he’s grateful for such devotion.
“My clever detective… you’re brilliant,” says John, the words flowing out so easily, it makes Sherlock flush. “So brilliant. I knew it from the first day we met. I knew you were going to be something to me, something exceptional.”
Sherlock lifts his head, looking into John’s eyes. His lips part to say something, but nothing comes. Instead, he leans forward and kisses John deeply. John sighs into the kiss, pressing back into Sherlock with the same eagerness and want. Once they pull away, Sherlock finally gains back his breath.
“I’m very glad to be something to you, John,” Sherlock whispers, his voice sincere.
“Oh, darling, you’re not just something anymore.” John cups Sherlock’s jaw, pressing their foreheads together. “You’re everything.”

It's so interesting to hear people's reflections! Thanks for your post @dianadragonfly, and thanks @totallysilvergirl for sending it along, and thanks to the people who've written in response! {I actually have been thinking a lot about why I love fics and fandom, so much so, that I've recently put together a sideblog where I'm going to be gathering my recs and my thoughts in one place -- exactly why I don't know, but the impulse wouldn't go away, no matter how much I ignored it, so . . . @thegildedbeeloves} In my ground zero incarnation, I was such a canon devotee that I didn't even want to watch BBC Sherlock -- Holmes and Watson in the modern era? It was bound to be horrible! And then . . .
So, probably no surprise that I was leery of AUs -- and the fics that worked the interstices of the series' canon and did canon re-sets/fix-its, well, there were so many of them and so many fabulous ones, I didn't feel the need to wander off, and it seemed pointless to do so. They were bound to be disappointing! And then . . . {you're probably sensing a theme . . .} So, I totally get the feeling of "rightness" of staying close to canon. There's a special beauty in calibrating a fic to the main lines. But every day I am astonished again and again, at the creativity and brilliance that the fandom's fic writers share with us -- it takes my breath away, it does. And the remarkable vibrance of that creative carnival for the curious -- I find, speaking for myself -- is in large part the consequence of fic writers feeling free enough to play non-canonically. Wonderful storytelling and writing has an even larger canvas with the AUs and such, and I've found that it makes being a fic reader an even more joyful experience, because of the additional creative riches that can exist with remixing and re-inventing canon. And, not only that, for me, the AUs enrich going back and re-reading the canon fics, and then the opposite applies as well . . . and, ultimately, I don't want to miss any moments of the creativity, or leave any of the joy to be had unread :-)
Tumblr media
So, I was thinking about different fandoms and the fics that I love. What makes a good, satisfying fan fic? I realize it has 100% to do with the canon.
Take BBC Sherlock. I struggle so much with AUs where their beginnings are different. Sherlock is an astronaut, assigned to work with scientist John. (This is an example, not a dig at any specific fic). I can't. I can't. I realize BBC Sherlock is also an AU from Doyle, but BBC Sherlock and John are so fucking tied to "A Study In Pink" and John handing his phone to Sherlock that everything else seems false. Fun premise, but not the Sherlock and John I know.
A satisfying Johnlock fan fic needs to change the ending of the BBC canon. To think of these two men, who love each other so much, just continuing their parallel existences, never becoming anything more than crime-fighting buds, is just. . . it doesn't fit. It doesn't fit the show. It doesn't fit the characters Moffit and Gatiss created, even if they decided to not make it happen (as a special 'fuck you' to their fans). It's heartbreaking.
My favorite fics are fixits -- many of them deal with the aftermath of Euros and Mary, or some do "canon intercepts" and deal with Seasons 3 and 4 differently. Still, anything but John and Sherlock raising Rosie together as partners/lovers/husbands in 221B with Mrs. Hudson downstairs feels like a lie. (Some canon intercepts write out Rosie completely.)
If I had to write sequels to BBC canon, I'd pick "Drawn to Stars" by @totallysilvergirl or "Never Turn Your Back on the Sea” by @discordantwords . There's a thousand other ones, but those ring the most true to me.
"Heartstopper" fics don't have a lot of room to mess with the ending. Anything other than Charlie and Nick happily growing old together is so far out of canon and out of character that it doesn't even seem like it's worth exploring. There are a handful of ones that have one character or the other dying, but mostly, we understand right away that Charlie and Nick are endgame. We are 100% aligned with canon and creator on this.
Anything that isn't true to this ending rings as false as anything that isn't true to Sherlock's beginning. Fun to read, but not our characters.
With Nick and Charlie being so young in canon, their beginnings are so much malleable. Sherlock and John are tied to that lab. Nick and Charlie? not so much. They meet in grammar school. They meet in University. They meet after a hot hookup at a club in their 20s. They meet after broken marriages to Imogen and Ben. They meet during Nick's rugby career or as fellow teachers. They meet at gyms, at animal rescues, at psychiatric hospitals. They are single parents, University professors, rock star drummers, hot shot authors and academics. Their beginning isn't fixed. But the end always is.
I have so many favorites but I just re-read "Lavender Fields" and I think it's a perfect Nick and Charlie meeting up in their 30s fics. There's a ton of University fics too.
I haven't read nearly as many fics from other fandoms, so I don't know their quirks. I'm finding that fandoms that don't have a m/m pairing are hard to find a lot of fics for. (That's a whole 'nother post). But other m/m fandoms seem to have canon-compliant extra scenes. (Wanna see Achilles and Patroclus get freaky in a tent somewhere? Here ya go. That being said, there's one about Achilles waiting for Patroclus in the Underworld that breaks. my. damn. heart.)
Anyways, I need to do a serious look-through of other fandoms to see how this plays out.
I should add the links here to the fics I mention, just because.

Hello. Not a rec ask, I was just thinking, even though there probably won't be s5 of Sherlock, if you were a writer how would you take care of Mrs Hudson absence? I mean, can't imagine anyone but Una playing her. What would be the scene to show that she's not around anymore? I have a couple ideas myself but would love to read how you'd deal with this. Thanks! (Also I love what you're doing here, you are the Queen of fic recs!)
Hey Nonny!
Sorry for holding off on this one so long, I just honestly got lazy, LOL.
This is a good question, honestly. Thing for me, though is that I feel Una is irreplaceable as our Mrs. Hudson, and just the idea of just... putting a new actor in her place is honestly horrifying to me.
The way I think they should address it, is along the same lines as the way Marvel addressed Chadwick's sad passing: not casting someone else in the role, and honour her in some way. OBVIOUSLY not to the same scale as Black Panther, but just kind of a small memoriam scene where they all visit her grave together, and allow the camera to linger on it. Somehow weave in that she left 221B to Sherlock in her will, because she knew he would never want to leave, which then opens up possibilities for what can be done with 221B as a "character", in a sense. Like do they become landlords, or is the whole place their home now, basically just turning each flat into maybe Rosie and John's room, a Lab for Sherlock in the basement, spare rooms for guests, maybe one is an AirBnB to bring in some additional income. I dunno.
I PERSONALLY don't think they should replace Hudders in ANY sense, including making someone else the landlady. I genuinely think they should go the "it's Sherlock's in her will" route, or Mycroft purchases the place if there's additional mortgage still on it, but given S4 wants us to believe Hudders can afford a sports car, I imagine that she owns the place.
And for the record, I don't think it was ever stated in-show if she had family outside of her sister and her ex, so like no sons-or-daughters to give the home to. But even if she did, I GENUINELY don't see her leaving the place to ANYONE other than Sherlock.
BUT YES, anyway, that's how I'd like the show to deal with it. Respectfully, and beautifully. Unlike how they dealt with S4 🙃
(and if you're still here Nonny, thank you for your kind words. Sorry again for taking so long to reply. Genuinely just lazy)

Solace & Joy, 71: Will You Still (a 221B)
Fluffbruary 12th, 2024
Tumblr media
Summary: John remembers when Sherlock used to worry. About them.
*
Just had a memory of shortly after Sherlock and I got together.
Coming back to the flat was always coming home, but once he and I sorted ourselves out, it became coming home to him. I started getting antsy after lunch, and thought about him constantly. What was he doing? Would he be there when I walked in? Was he thinking about—
And just about then, whenever that thought hit me, I’d get a text to tell me that yeah, he was thinking about me. It’s still like that, it’s just settled into something I can count on.
But early on, he might not have been counting on it. One day I came home and the flat was full of music. Not the violin: Sherlock was listening to an instrumental version of something light, something I couldn’t place.
But it was danceable, so I pulled him from his microscope and close to me and held him and danced. He’s always so graceful, and I love to feel it even more than I love to see it.
Lyrics were nagging at me from far away, and when they came clear, I realised why he’d put this on.
“Yes,” I whispered, “yes I will. Tomorrow and all the days after, until the end of our days.”
“You think so?”
“I know so. Berk.”

Chapter 4 [2.4 Prompt: Camera] & Chapter 5 [2.5 Prompt: Rescue] It's Saturday, April 11th, Easter eve. John updates his blog, as he finds ways to re-connect with the world and to de-stress. Along the way he describes how his gaming has taken him in an unexpected direction, and it's Sherlock's turn to worry about whether John's adventures with the animal kingdom are a concerning barometer of his state of mind. Includes, among other assorted items: news that John has been spending time at (a) St. Bart's; a brief back-and-forth about what the point may be of playing games which have no point; an aside about an alleged cartoon crush of Sherlock's; and, mentioned in passing, the possible appearance of bunny-sponsored surprises.
