If I had a nickel for every time Carol stood in the background staring forlornly at Jess making out with a new love interest, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I really love all the little parallels and similarities between Talanah and Aloy's stories
Losing a father (/figure) during an event where he fought to keep them safe
Living up to the legacy of their dead family, wheb all of them died courageous and selfless deaths
Fighting to make a change and serve a greater purpose
Feeling the weight of stereotypes placed on them by society
Training devoutly for years in order to achieve an almost impossible goal they set for themselves, trying to right a wrong that was done

Enemy Within (CarolJess)
Today in CarolJess posts I’m just gonna state what actually happened in canon during the Enemy Within arc.
Carol learns she has a brain lesion that could kill her at any time, or wipe her memories if her healing factor is enough to keep her alive.
Jess has been around a lot lately, accompanying her to the doctor, checking up on Carol’s terminally ill friend Tracy for her, feeding her cat, generally being a great friend and partner.
While ruminating on the very real possibility of hallucinations, Carol turns to gently hold Jess’ face.
“I was just making sure you were real.”
For plot reasons, Carol eventually has to sacrifice herself, flying into space, which triggers her brain aneurysm, wiping her memory.
The focus on the frame as she does so is on Carol and Jess specifically, positing this most importantly as a heroic move by Carol and a very emotional moment for Jess.
Jess says Carol sacrificing herself to save millions was “worth it… I guess”.
She’s taking Carol’s loss of memories very personally, and not well.
Jess’ angsting over Carol eventually leads to this scene, where she says to herself, “congrats Jess, you’re going to die unloved and alone, like you always figured.”
Because…. until very recently…. she was loved… and not alone….
