So by now everyone knows about the lovely @genericpuff and their LO rewrite (if you don't you have to check it out!!!) and I've been re-reading it alongside LO just for the sake of comparative analysis and I noticed something within the first few eps that was so amazing.
Persephone noticed and approached Hades first in Rekindled.
It seems like such a small change at first but looking at it in comparison to the original it's a HUGE shift and immediately sets the tone for who Persephone is as a character in Rekindled vs LO.
In LO based on first impressions of Persephone we see a young woman who is hopelessly out of place and severely in the "damsel mindset." The first time Hades ever sees her is when she's in distress after being knocked over. We see her through his POV and don't see the situation through her eyes at all.
In Rekindled the focus is on Persephone and her POV, she sees Hades at the bar and through her we see this immediate connection (though not instantly a positive one, i.e. "he's terrifying"). It leaves the audience immediately interested by what she means by "terrifying". Despite that initial impression she chooses to still approach him which shows remarkable agency and boldness on her part in comparison to her OG counterpart.
She also approaches with a decent amount of social awkwardness, she's more forward than most who were raised on Olympus, handily securing her "small fish in a big pond" characterization without making her seem like a ditz. It makes her showing up in his car later (another change there that I could write a whole other post on) less weird and creepy since they've at least had a conversation before that moment.
TLDR: I love Lore Rekindled and the shifts that were made to make these characters feel more realistic and less flat.
ARE YOU WRITING YOUR EPISODES AT THE START OF THE WEEK THEY'RE DUE
WHAT IN THE WORLD-
there was already a lot of evidence to suggest that her buffer is only 1-2 weeks ahead of time
there was already a lot of evidence to suggest that she was writing by the seat of her pants
there was already a lot of evidence to suggest that LO isn't ending because she planned it to end here, but because she's either given up completely OR because Webtoons has cut her loose (see: "I thought it would take longer to get here", among other things she's said and done to suggest this tinfoil hat theory)
I’ve been doing some rereading of Lore Olympus and I’d like to kindly point out that Persephone has a supposed second genocide under her belt that doesn’t seem to be as acknowledged as her first (AOW) or third (plague):
When all those mortals starved during her punishment.
Now my grand assumption was never explicitly stated in the comic but there are some things that would lead me to believe that a lot of people, in fact, did die.
In 190s, we see flashbacks of the mortal realm having decayed away and what (in my mind) is a clear indicator that the mortals were starving.
Plus this little interaction with Minthe. Not to mention the fact that her hands got badly damaged trying to replicate Demeter’s powers in order to grow life again.
Now things seemed bounced back relatively quickly because of course they did since Persephone’s punishment only lasted 10 years and we see a few years where things are looking good but like… it’s just never talked about??? And I do believe Persephone had an active role in this, as she did all her other killings, seeing as the events of her second genocide were directly related to her AOW.
You would think with basically 3 confirmed genocides under her belt, a lot more readers would hold Persephone accountable for what she did, but from what I’ve seen it’s “not her fault” or “they deserved it” or anyone who criticizes her is a woman hater. So.
If you've been in the /r/UnpopularLoreOlympus subreddit at all, you've surely noticed people posting edits for something called the Lore Olympus Redrawn project!
And if you haven't then you're about to be in for a treat in a couple hours, because for the past several weeks artists AND voice actors in the ULO community have been working their butts off to redraw the first few episodes of Lore Olympus! The list of credited artists is INSANELY huge and everyone involved should be proud of themselves for pulling this all together (•̀ᴗ•́)و
So if you have a little time today, please join them all in celebrating their work in a couple hours when the finished video drops!
What do you think about the ASL…. In lore Olympus?
It's... rough, to say the least. I don't think it's the worst depiction of ASL out there (though disclaimer, I'm not deaf nor an ASL speaker so I'm not an authority on this topic at all) but it's baffling that it's ASL and not GSL when Melinoe was literally introduced in Greek (but is now signing her name in ASL??) Like this comic is as close to its Greek origins as Martin Mystery is to Japanese anime 💀🤣
It's also just not committing to it as much as it ought to. People are signing but still mouthing the words and the speech bubbles are coming out of their mouths. Why not use some clever typography overlays to translate without defaulting to the standard speech bubbles?
And of course the hand movements themselves aren't showing any sort of motion lines so it's just a bunch of hands floating around everywhere, we saw a lot of people not even realizing it was sign language at first because it looked like just a bunch of floating dismembered hands 💀🤣
That said, I have far more issues with Melinoe being entwined in a time travel plotline, but that's for another post, because I have LOTS to say about that and it deserves its own post LOL
