How dare you remind me of this painting I did during grad school and how I’d rather be living in Florence @hummeline. *sobs into the carbonara I’m currently eating*

Philando Castile and Hundreds of Others and Trying to Understand Anything Anymore.
I copied this from FB but the sentiment is the same here. This is all I have right now, and it’s not enough. Also, I use the “f” curse in this one, and it feels like an absolute understatement of a word, but if it bothers you, now you know. That we can care about language at a time like this… IDK where we are.
Y'know, I’m a white lady and so I experience a privilege that means I can never, ever, understand what my friends of color go through by just existing, the terror and the worry that has to accompany daily life. So everything I say has to be painted by that privilege. But that can’t mean we don’t say things. Experience means you understand things fully, and I can’t have that here; what I can have is sympathy and pain and hurt and we HAVE to keep saying it loudly when we feel it. We have to keep talking about how this isn’t just a problem for people of color, this is a threat to our humanity and our whole existence.
And I am just fucking heartbroken. I don’t say that to co-opt anyone’s pain or indicate I am the suffering one - I’m not, especially compared to the families mourning the senseless violence. I know this isn’t what the world should be and yet I know it’s what it is. I know it’s not the world I wish for my nephews, I know it’s not the one I wish for my future children, I know it’s not the one I wish for my friends.
And my point is this: it is no longer a matter of personal opinion or preference. This isn’t a complex issue. We are looking at videos of cold, senseless executions, day in, day out.
If you are anything but outraged by this - if you want to stay quiet, if you want to insist cops have to do what they have to do, or hide behind a blue wall of bullshit that tells you “you don’t know what it’s like out there,” just please unfollow me. I won’t ever know you did it, and we don’t have to talk again. I beg you. Remove yourself from my life.
White people can never know what this is like. But that doesn’t mean we have to stand for it.
You’re half right, by the way: We don’t know what it’s like out there - but not for cops. For people of color. So unless you’re prepared to admit that there is a horrifying pattern of racism expressing itself in senseless violence - not violence, MURDER - carried out by white people charged with keeping us safe against black people acting lawfully and peacefully - we aren’t friends. I don’t even fucking know you.
This has been another useless post on social media, made to express my frustration and anger and powerlessness, while those in power do nothing and I try to figure out what I can do to be of real help.

I love it when the shop doesn't read all of the drawings before freaking out and asking me panicked questions about info that is literally RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.
