The original explanation is that it might be too "traumatizing"
What was the rationale for them trying to not have a public inquiry in the first place for the Nova Scotia mass shootings? You'd think the fact that it was the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history and all the suspicions that the guy was an RCMP informant would have been enough to make the need for one self-evident, not to mention that there have been public inquiries for much less serious incidents IIRC

when i see someone on reddit or twitter or here on tumblr mention how they accidentally stumbled upon CSEM (Child Sexual Exploitation Material, commonly known as child pornography, but i encourage you to replace that terminology with CSEM!)-- which is not as hard to find as the general public would like to believe-- and freaked out, i understand. but when they say that they panicked and closed the tab etc and tried to forget about it, i'm sitting behind my screen saying no!! no!!!!
if you accidentally come across images of child sexual abuse online, REPORT IT! the child in those images is a real person and they are suffering. your report could save that child's life if they are currently being exploited-- and for those of us who have gone on to become adults, every time you help remove one of our images you are doing us a kindness you can't even imagine.
when i see that someone came across CSEM and didn't report it, i think about myself and all the other survivors out there who live with the knowledge that our material is out there online in a thousand redundancies, and EVERY. SINGLE. instance of that material being removed is a great, massive relief. the thought of someone seeing one of my images/videos and not taking action to remove it is so very disheartening.
if you come across CSEM, please please please report it. the child in those images would thank you. i am thanking you.

A really good article about how the excessive focus on cleaning/surface transmission of COVID-19 has been vastly overemphasized to the detriment of preventing transmission from respiratory droplets/aerosols. In a similar way that a lot of the post-9/11 airport safety measures are 'security theatre' (i.e. they make us feel safer but don't actually make us safer), the overemphasized focus on deep cleaning/sanitizing surfaces has likely taken away from more effective measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading, giving us 'prevention fatigue' from measure that don't even help much.

here’s a psa from ur local iranian-american, quit pronouncing “Iran” as “eye-ran”, it’s pronounced “ee-rahn”, and when one of us corrects you? fucking. change. start correcting yourself. I get the media sucks with pronouncing it right but at least make a goddamn effort, because it feels like no one really is. ive personally told ppl over 10 times and even then they didn’t get it right.
Pronouncing it like “eye-ran” leads to sososo many racist jokes, and they’re NOT harmless, they’re annoying and rude and overall really insensitive, and that can get to a person. please stop.
this is ok to rb, I encourage it if anything

The withdrawal of $475,000 in cash by the man who killed 22 Nova Scotians in April matches the method the RCMP uses to send money to confidential informants and agents, sources say.
Gabriel Wortman, who is responsible for the largest mass killing in Canadian history, withdrew the money from a Brink’s depot in Dartmouth, N.S., on March 30, stashing a carryall filled with hundred-dollar bills in the trunk of his car.
According to a source close to the police investigation the money came from CIBC Intria, a subsidiary of the chartered bank that handles currency transactions.
Sources in both banking and the RCMP say the transaction is consistent with how the RCMP funnels money to its confidential informants and agents, and is not an option available to private banking customers.
The RCMP has repeatedly said that it had no “special relationship” with Wortman.
Court documents show Wortman owned a New Brunswick-registered company called Berkshire-Broman, the legal owner of two of his vehicles (including one of his police replica cars). Whatever the purpose of that company, there is no public evidence that it would have been able to move large quantities of cash. Wortman also ran his own denturist business and there is no reason to believe it also would require him to handle large amounts of cash.
If Wortman was an RCMP informant or agent, it could explain why the force appeared not to take action on complaints about his illegal guns and his assault on his common-law wife.
A Mountie familiar with the techniques used by the force in undercover operations, but not with the details of the investigation into the shooting, says Wortman could not have collected his own money from Brink’s as a private citizen.
“There’s no way a civilian can just make an arrangement like that,” he said in an interview.
He added that Wortman’s transaction is consistent with the Mountie’s experience in how the RCMP pays its assets. “I’ve worked a number of CI cases over the years and that’s how things go. All the payments are made in cash. To me that transaction alone proves he has a secret relationship with the force.”
