After I've spent a little time in the danganronpa fandom I gotta say that it is kinda telling... When people look at all the female characters in V3 that can potentially be interpreted as bisexual, (particularly Kaede, Miu, Angie and Tsumugi), and then they decide to take the one girl that can be interpreted as lesbian (Tenko), and say "oh no she's bisexual".

Like, aside from the really messed up Love Hotel implications (the idea that misandrists secretly want to be dominated by men, or that they can be 'fixed' by having sex with a man), it just kinda hurts to see that people don't wanna like Tenko unless she is open to liking guys.

And if anyone thinks I honestly support the people in this fandom who harass/doxx innocent people, then you are mistaken. And it does not change the fact that people still hate the idea of Tenko being a lesbian. If you are going to lump in doxxers and hyperfans like that in with actual lesbians that see themselves in Tenko, then all it shows is that you have biases against lesbians.

(And yes I've joked about K0kichi fans being scary too, that wasn't fair of me to do and I know not all Kokichi fans are that inflammatory. )

tenko chabashira, as she is in canon, is a walking pile of lesbophobic stereotypes, specifically the man-hating lesbian. her entire goddamn character is “I HATE MEN AND I LOVE GIRLS”. most of the hcs for bi tenko i see are “she grows out of her Irrational non-attraction to Hatred of Men because she met The Right Man” which is. pretty damn lesbophobic. and when lesbians say “hey thats lesbophobic”, its always met with “BI ERASURE!!!!!!” there are. so many female characters in danganronpa that could be read as bi, and only two specifically lesbian-reading characters. one of them is aoi, who tries to kill everyone else and then herself because her best (female) friend died and says something like “i havent had a boyfriend yet- i must be a late bloomer. will you be my practice boyfriend” which sounds pretty lesbian to me, a lesbian, and tenko, the man-hating lesbian stereotype. shes not even a good lesbian character, but to say a character built on LESBOPHOBIC stereotypes is attracted to men is lesbophobic.

You know, something I’m disappointed that Spiderverse didn’t do is popularise multiverses and multiple versions of characters in fandom. Because it seems like a very easy way to solve headcanon wars.

tenko didn’t “have a romantic fantasy about a man” in the love hotel, shuichi was just the one acting as her partner in it. i’m pretty sure her partner in the fantasy wouldn’t still be a man if she was in the love hotel with a woman instead of a man, you guys are just looking for excuses to be lesbophobic.

also “as a lesbian myself”. being a lesbian doesn’t mean it’s any less lesbophobic to headcanon a canonical lesbian as being m-spec. us lesbians aren’t “erasing” bisexual women, we just don’t really think lesbophobia should be encouraged in a fandom where wlw content is already ignored by most people for toxic mlm ships.

“try to erase a character’s canon bisexuality“. no where in the game did tenko ever show romantic or sexual attraction to men. only in the, as i’ve stated before, non-canon love hotel. she became friends with shuichi, who is a man, but it was platonic. tenko shows attraction towards women. she canonically has a crush on himiko. she doesn’t want to date any man.

this fandom is fucking horrible when treating wlw ships as a whole. they’ll ignore good wlw ships for shitty mlm ships when the two men they’re shipping don’t have any chemistry. maybe you guys should listen to lesbians who tell you you’re being lesbophobic instead of brushing it off.

tenko is heavily coded as a lesbian and written using lesbian stereotypes like her hating all men and the (very harmful to real life lesbians) “predatory lesbian” stereotype her attitude towards himiko, which is very poorly written because we been knew team danganronpa can’t write good lgbt rep

even if she’s just a fictional character, erasing all of that to ship her with men/headcanon her as bi is pretty damn lesbophobic, just like it would be homophobic to headcanon a gay/gay-coded character as bi (komaeda, kokichi) and it would be biphobic to headcanon a bi/bi-coded character as gay or lesbian.

shes a lesbian written by a... questionable straight man (one hint: all the incestuous bullshit in danganronpa), so of course her writing's gonna be fucked up. she's not good lesbian rep, but for the love of everything, she's a lesbian. and the only strongly lesbian-coded character! her entire schtick is that She Loves Girls and She Hates Men. other characters like mahiru and aoi that are commonly hc'ed as lesbians are a lot more subtle/subtext, but its the blatant "I LIKE GIRLS AND DONT LIKE GUYS" character that everyone suddenly wants to insist is bi. like, if tenko were a man who loved guys and hated girls, people would be vehemently saying that anyone who hc'ed him as bi was homophobic. but when its a girl who hates guys and loves girls, its suddenly "her hatred of men is so childish and she just needs to meet the right guy"

like, some of y'all will say that tenko is "predatory" and "stalkerish" towards himiko but turn around and act like the common fanon interpretation of sai/oma is the best thing since sliced bread! people will go to any lengths to discredit wlw ships while not giving their precious yaoiz a second glance!

-the main stereotype that im describing here isnt about her attraction to women, its about her non-attraction to men. very important distinction. saying that she "outgrows" her non-attraction to men and she is, in fact, attracted to men is incredibly lesbophobic in the context of the rest of her character.

-SHES LIKE, THE ONE LESBIAN IN THE SERIES. THERES LIKE A BILLION BI GIRLS IN DANGANRONPA (toko, mikan, ibuki, SAKURA, miu, kaede, JUST TO NAME A FEW. yeah, some of those might not be the best bi reps, but tenko isn't good lesbian rep either), JUST LET THE LESBIANS HAVE THE ONE (1) POORLY-EXECUTED LESBIAN FOR FUCKS SAKE

Tenko is a lesbian, plain and simple. She's not good lesbian rep, I'll admit, but she's a lesbian. Her character is primarily built on the man-hating lesbian trope, and, to a lesser extent, the predatory sapphic. (I acknowledge that "predatory" can be applied to all wlw.) 85% of her personality outside of her FTEs is "hurr durr I hate men and I automatically suspect men of being the culprit in Class Trials despite the two trials I was alive for turning out with female Blackened." This, along with other tidbits (only letting girls touch her abs and hand-sewing frills onto her costume to attract girls, both stated in the official artbook, come to mind), suggests heavily that Tenko is a lesbian.

But that's not the only issue with bi!Tenko headcanons. A lot of the time, when Tenko is shipped with a man (specifically Rantaro, as that's the most common Tenko x Man pair I've seen), the story usually goes, "Tenko sees (Male Character) being nice to a girl, gets closer, ends up learning that Not All Men are bad and being cured of her irrational hatred of men, and falls in love with him." That narrative in and of itself is lesbophobic, suggesting that a lesbian who "hates men," like Tenko herself, just needs to meet the right man to be "cured" of her "irrationality." It's a troubling trend in Tenko/Rantaro fanfiction, and god knows if it's in any other Tenko/Men pairings.

Again, I'm not claiming Tenko is good lesbian rep, but she's a lesbian. End of story.
