So Astarion found individual fireworks and then a big ass box of them. I have it headcannoned that he plans to use them against Cazador later on. I mean, he found them all while we were exploring a basement in a house outside of Baldurs Gate.

If there was ever a song to describe the companions of Baldur's Gate 3, it would be "Best of You" by Foo Figters. I love this game, and that song hits hard thinking about everything these characters go through.

thinking ABOUT how the themes of abuse and power imbalance and taking away of consent or agency is such a strong theme in BG3 and honestly impressively consistent considering the narrative being so interactive. The various layers and stories fold into each other and over each other as both mirrors and as parts of a single narrative.

Themes of perfect victimhood or rather, when we withold sympathy from victims based on how pleasant and appealing they are to us, or based on whether their victimhood has left them off (understandably) morally 'worse' than they would otherwise be.

The little nuances, such as Aylin's gleeful stomping of Thorm's corpse, a horrible man who did horrible things to her and the woman she loves, and the people she's sworn to protect. And yet Isobel still feels sympathy for him, regrets it turned out like that, he's still her father. Both of their reactions are so human and real and understandable really.

Then the stuff like Githyanki society being what it is, and the hope Orpheus gives them. Many are willing to condemn them for being unpleasant militaristic conquerors, but after aeons of enslavement and torture, what would any society be like? Wouldn't any suffering with your mind your own feel preferable to an eternity of mindless enslavement? This is also mirrored on an individual character level with Astarion.

And yet Vlaakith demands their unquestioned obedience. Shar demands Shadowheart's, Mystra demands Gale's, and now the Emperor demands ours. 'For your own good', 'for your survival', 'for the power that will keep you free (but only through ME)', 'for the survival of your city/world/civilization'. Is this love? Is it benevolence? Could it ever be? Can it deep down really be any better than a contract with a devil (where at least you know the terms and aren't convinced 'love' in any form is the reason they're helping you)?

I just applaud Larian's writers for the depth of research that clearly went into depicting various systems of abuse and power imbalance, and if you play this game honest with yourself it might just help you realize how people could ever be 'stupid enough to fall for cults/stay in relationships with abusers/etc'. This all gaining a meta level when we look at how certain parts of the audience react to Gale's and Lae'zel's storylines in particular.
