➳ Summer
❣︎ pairings: JJ Maybank x Reader
❣︎ summary: A summer romance leads to heartbreak.
Tumblr media
Rolled in as wild and free
As a clear water beach at seventeen memory
Eyes blue as the July sky
Sent shivers down my spine
Every time that he smiled at me
“You’re still thinking about him, aren’t you?” Your brother’s voice breaks you out of your thoughts. You glance up from your bowl of cereal to find Rafe staring at you intently. The look on your face seems to be enough answer for Rafe as he scoffs and shakes his head.
“It’s been a month, Y/N. You need to get over it.” He says roughly.
“I loved him, Rafe,” you try to defend.
Rafe rolls his eyes. “You knew him for three months.”
‘And yet, I loved him,’ you think, not daring to say it out loud again.
You’ve lived in the Outer Banks your whole life. In all those years, you never once had a conversation with JJ Maybank. Maybe it was due to your brother, who hated the Pogues with a vengeance. Or maybe it was due to your overprotective father who never once let you go out alone. Whatever the reason, you and JJ never really crossed paths. You knew about him, of course. Everybody did. Most of all, you knew about how much your brother hated him.
It was the summer of 2023 when it all changed. Rafe and Ward were off the island for some type of business trip which meant you had a little bit of freedom. The second week of July, Sarah invited you to come to a party with her boyfriend and his friends. You accepted, knowing you would probably never get another chance to meet the infamous Pogues.
You and Sarah arrived at the party together, quickly meeting up with John B., Pope, Cleo, and Kiara. You still remember the moment JJ made his appearance. The roar of the motorcycle engine causing all of you to turn toward the noise. The first thing you noticed about him was how free he looked. His life was everything yours wasn’t. The second thing you noticed was his eyes. They were the prettiest blue you’d ever seen, made brighter when he smiled. And maybe that’s why you fell.
The way he took off that white t-shirt
The way he looked walking out of that water
And it just got hotter and hotter
You and JJ hit it off immediately. He was a flirt if there ever was one, and you were the perfect amount of innocent to believe his every word. It didn’t take long for the two of you to start spending time together without Sarah and the other Pogues. He would take you on rides on his bike and teach you how to surf. He showed you the life you’d always dreamed of.
The two of you would spend many days relaxing on the beach. You were mesmerized every time he took off his shirt, his muscles catching your eye every time. You still remember how he glistened in the sun after stepping out of the ocean, running a hand through his wet hair to brush it out of his face. You gave every bit of yourself to him that day. It’s no wonder there’s nothing left.
The tan line's fading on my sun kissed skin
Hits me like a wave when I think about it
Sublime on the boom box
Our bare feet in the sand
Makin' out on the boardwalk
My heart on fire in his hands, yeah
The evidence of your summer romance with JJ was fading from your skin but not your mind. The memories of dancing on the beach to the booming music, your bare feet in the warm sand, hit you like a tidal wave every time you think about it. JJ held your heart in his hands every time he kissed you on the Pogue’s boat. You never thought he’d be so clumsy with it.
Rafe’s sigh breaks you out of your thoughts. His eyes are softer now when you look at him again.
“He’s not coming back, Y/N.” He says, unusually gentle.
“You think I don’t know that?” You snap. Rafe recoils at your tone, not expecting an outburst like that from you. You lower your gaze from Rafe’s shocked one, continuing to pick at your food.
“I’ve accepted that he’s not coming back. That doesn’t make it hurt any less.”
He drove away the first of September
But I remember
Yeah, I remember
He talked like
And he walked like
And he looked like
And he burned like summer, summer, oh
He burned like summer, summer, oh
You remember the day JJ left like it was yesterday. Summer was over, and with it went your romance. With you and JJ going back to school, you at the Kook Academy and JJ at Kildare County High School, there was no chance of the two of you running into each other. You tried to stay in touch, but JJ never seemed to make the same effort. It ended once and for all when Ward and Rafe came back to the Outer Banks.
You heard through the grapevine that JJ started seeing someone else. You cried for days after that. He hadn’t even given you a proper goodbye. Yet, you couldn’t seem to forget the way he walked, the way he talked, the way he looked, or the way he branded your heart with his.
His kiss was a sweet salt breeze
Had a hold on me like the moon pulls the tide
Took me up on the Ferris wheel
And I swear it feels like I never came down from the high
I know we never said forever
But something about it felt like it would never end
Bottle rocket sparks in the Florida sky
Summer, summer
Something that bright's gotta burn out some time
Everything reminded you of JJ. The salty ocean breeze reminded you of the way he kissed you. His lips always had a hint of the sea on them. You think he’s ruined the ocean for you forever. JJ never made you any promises, but you had thought that he was the one. You believed that a summer romance could last forever. You should have known better. You should have know that no flame burns forever.

➳ Wish You The Best
❣︎ pairings: Rafe Cameron x Reader
Tumblr media
I miss knowing what you’re thinking
And hearing how your day has been
Do you think you could tell me everything, darling?
But leave out every part about him
You were the best thing to ever happen to Rafe. You were the light to his dark, the angel to his devil. His time with you was the happiest he’d ever been. Even then, he couldn’t control his demons. He couldn’t control the thoughts that plagued his mind. So, he pushed you away. He convinced himself that it was to protect you, and it did. It just came at the cost of losing the love of his life.
Rafe missed you. He missed always knowing what you were thinking. He missed hearing you talk about your day, no matter how mundane. He wishes you could still tell him everything. But he didn’t want to hear about him.
Right now, you’re probably by the ocean
While I’m still out here in the rain
With every day that passes by since we’ve spoken
It’s like Glasgow gets farther from LA
Rafe imagines that you’re surfing in the North Carolina waves with your friends right now. It was summer in the Outer Banks, but Rafe felt like he was living in a perpetual storm. The sunshine never seemed to reach him, it was like a cloud followed him around wherever he went. Figure Eight and The Cut weren’t that far apart, but with everyday that passes since he walked away from you, it feels like the land between the two of you becomes endless.
Maybe it’s supposed to be this way
But, oh, my love
I wanna say “I miss the green in your eyes”
And when I said we could be friends, guess I lied
I wanna say, “I wish that you never left”
Oh, but instead, I only wish you the best
It was better this way. He couldn’t hurt you if he wasn’t around. But, oh, how he missed your eyes. He missed the way they sparkled in the sun and how they crinkled at the corners when you smiled at him. He missed the way your eyes shone with love whenever you looked at him, and he hates that you look at somebody else that way now. He wished you would have fought him when he told you it wasn’t working. He wished you never let him leave. And he wished he never had to.
I wanna say, “Without you, everything’s wrong”
And you were everything I need all along
I wanna say, “I wish that you never left”
Oh, but instead, I only wish you the best
Rafe wished he had realized you were everything he needed when he had you. The voices in his head weren’t as loud when you were around, the anger wasn’t all-consuming. Everything was worse without you. The voices louder, the anger more apparent. Above all, the sadness was unbearable. He’s convinced he left a part of his soul with you when he left, and he doesn’t think he’ll ever get it back.
Well, I can’t help but notice
You seem happier than ever now
And I guess that I should tell you I’m sorry
It seems I was the problem somehow
Maybe I only brought you down
Wish I could say it’s something I really mean
But I want you happy whether or not it’s with me
Rafe can’t tell if he’s imagining things or not. Is your smile wider than it was when you were with him? Are you happier without him? He knows that he should apologize and beg for you to take him back. He knows he was the reason for your break-up. But he can’t bring himself to do it, not when he knows he was the one weighing you down. He knows that all he can do now is wish you the best and hope that you’re happy, even though he knows he never will be.

bye what if reader told rafe that her clit was sore.
➳ Sore
❣︎ pairings: Rafe Cameron x Reader
❣︎ author’s note: saw a couple other authors who got this request, and I’ve written something similar before, but I need inspo lol. Sorry it’s so short.
Tumblr media
Rafe’s head was currently buried between your thighs, his tongue working hard on your clit. You’ve lost count of how many orgasms you’ve had at this point.
“Rafe, please,” you beg.
“‘Please’ what, princess?” He mumbles against your skin.
“It hurts,” you whine, bringing your hands down to try and push his head away. He simply takes your hands in one of his own, pinning them against your stomach.
“You can take it,” he says before diving back in. Rafe eventually pulls another orgasm from you before finally giving you a break. He takes care of you the rest of the night, and you fall asleep in his arms.

➳ To Break and To Heal
❣︎ summary: You, the notoriously emotionally unavailable kook, catch the eye of the island’s infamous womanizing pogue, JJ Maybank at a party. Can two broken people come together to heal? Or is this relationship destined for heartbreak?
❣︎ pairings: JJ Maybank x Reader
❣︎ author’s note: Inspired by the song Heart to Break by Ryan Griffin
Tumblr media
JJ’s POV
“Who’s the girl?” JJ asks John B, gesturing with his drink toward the girl on the dance floor. Your (Y/H/C) locks cascading down your back as you sway to the music surrounded by your friends has JJ’s complete attention. John B looks at him like he’s crazy.
“You don’t know? That’s (Y/N)(Y/L/N). Notorious man-eater and heartbreaker extraordinaire. I’d stay away from her if I were you,” John B explains.
“Good thing you’re not then,” JJ says, knocking back the rest of his drink before setting it on the counter behind him. Patting a gaping John B on his shoulder, JJ departs in your direction.
“Did you not hear me? She chews up and spits out guys like you!” John B yells after him, but JJ ignores him.
Your POV
“Hey! (Y/N), right?” You hear a voice from behind you and turn around. You’re met with a head of messy blond hair, tan skin, and a cocky smirk. You frown instantly, looking the man up and down.
“Who’s asking?”
“Uh, I’m JJ. JJ Maybank,” JJ says, introducing himself. His confidence falters when he gets no reaction from you. “Can I buy you a drink?”
Your expression changes then, a smile gracing your features. If you were beautiful before, you’re stunning when you smile.
“Sure,” you say, surprising JJ. You turn to your friends, whispering something to them before turning your attention back to JJ. You start walking toward the bar before noticing that JJ isn’t following you. “You coming?” You ask over your shoulder.
“Oh, uh, yeah,” he stammers, jogging to catch up with you.
Upon reaching the bar, you order your favorite drink and watch as JJ pulls out a wad of cash to pay. It doesn’t take long for the bartender to hand you your drink, flashing you a smile. You thank him before turning to JJ.
“Well, thanks for the drink,” you say, beaming at him. And then you’re walking away, leaving a very confused JJ in your wake.
“Woah, wait!” JJ calls after you, quickly catching up. “That’s it? You’re not gonna stay, and I dunno. Talk?”
“Talk?” You laugh sardonically. You pause to look at him. You admit that he’s handsome, but you know his type. He’s the type that reels you in before dumping you on the side of the road for something better. “Guys like you don’t want to just ‘talk.’”
“Guys like me?” JJ wonders. You roll your eyes but clarify anyway.
“Players. Womanizers. Whatever you wanna call it.”
“What does that make you?” JJ rebuts, shocking you into silence.
“Excuse me?” You seethe, eyes narrowing at the boy.
“You have a reputation, sweetheart. ‘Heartbreaker extraordinaire’ as my friend says.” JJ tells you, using finger quotes around his words. A sad expression appears on your face momentarily, disappearing almost before JJ can register it and being replaced by a look of indifference.
“Thanks again for the drink, but I’m not interested,” you say briskly, quickly turning on your heel and heading back toward your friends. JJ is left speechless, wondering if it could have gone any worse.
JJ’s POV
Sulking back to John B, he’s forced to admit that his friend was right. He didn’t stand a chance with you.
Your POV
One month later, you’re in your bedroom with Sarah, who’s trying to convince you to come to a bonfire with her new boyfriend and his friends.
“I don’t know, Sar. You know they’re not a huge fan of us kooks,” you reason.
“Come on, it’ll be fun. I promise they’re cool, and we’ll leave if you feel uncomfortable,” Sarah begs.
“Fine,” you sigh, conceding.
Sarah cheers, wrapping you in a big hug, and you laugh.
“I need to find something to wear.”
JJ’s POV
“You think she’s single?” JJ asks John B, referring to Sarah’s friend that he had just mentioned she would be bringing.
John B rolls his eyes. “I don’t know, but try not to be a creep, will you?”
JJ puts a hand to his chest, feigning offense. “I’m nothing but a gentleman.” Kiara scoffs at that, and JJ shoots her with a glare.
Your pov
The bonfire is already in full swing when you and Sarah arrive. Sarah quickly makes her way to her boyfriend, John B, while you stand back awkwardly. Noticing that you weren’t next to her, Sarah waves you over.
“(Y/N), this is John B. John B, (Y/N),” Sarah says, introducing you. John B holds out a hand for you to shake, and you take it. His looks of shock doesn’t slip past you though, and your eyebrows furrow in confusion. John B starts saying something, but you’re not paying attention, looking at something behind him instead.
Sarah notices your attention is elsewhere and follows your gaze. You were looking at none other than JJ Maybank, the boy whose words you haven’t stopped thinking about since he said them, and he was looking right back at you.
“Do you two know each other?” Sarah asks, prompting John B to turn and look at JJ behind him.
“You could say that,” JJ says at the same time you say “No.” Sarah’s eyes narrow at you while John B glares at JJ.
“We met briefly,” you try to explain. Sarah nods slowly, clearly not believing that that’s all there was. Thankfully, you’re saved with the arrival of three other people whom Sarah introduces as Kiara, Cleo, and Pope.
You’re able to avoid JJ for the rest of the night and even enjoy yourself. It’s when you’re walking back to your car that JJ is able to catch you alone.
“(Y/N)! Wait up,” he calls after you. You’re not exactly sure why, but you stop. JJ jogs to catch up with you, stopping by your side. “I, uh, I wanted to apologize for the last time we saw each other,” he says nervously, hand rubbing the back of his neck. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
Your hard exterior softens a bit at his vulnerability. Maybe you were wrong about him. “Thanks, and I’m sorry, too. I made assumptions about you that I shouldn’t have,” you reply. He smiles at you.
“Well, I can’t say you were entirely wrong. And I shouldn’t’ve made assumptions about you either,” JJ says, wincing at the memory.
A beat passes before you reply. “I can’t say you were wrong either,” you respond, a sad tone to your words.
JJ’s POV
Looking at the girl before him, he didn’t believe what John B had told him. This wasn’t someone who got off on breaking people’s hearts. This was someone who had her heart broken one too many times and was trying her best not to let it happen again.
“Everything okay in there?” Your voice brings him out of his thoughts, and he realizes he’s been staring.
“Um, yeah. Sorry,” he clears his throat, trying to play it off. You smile at his flustered state. “Can I walk you to your car?” He asks, really hoping you’ll say “yes.”
You seem to think about it for a moment before nodding, and he cheers inwardly.
“So, how do you know Sarah?” JJ asks, trying to make conversation.
“I, uh, I knew her brother,” you tell him.
“Oh, sorry to hear that,” he replies, causing you to laugh.
“Yeah, me too,” you respond after a pause. He swears there’s a hint of sadness in your voice but doesn’t question it.
All too soon, you’ve reached your car. Neither of you say anything for a moment until you turn to him and say, “Thank you for the company.”
“Thanks for letting me keep you company,” JJ answers. The two of you stand there for a moment, not sure what to say to the other. “I’ll, uh, I’ll let you get going,” JJ says, although not making any moves to leave.
“Right, yeah, I should go,” you say, also not moving. Finally, after what feels like a lifetime, you break eye contact, clearing your throat and turning away from him.
“I’ll see you around, I guess,” JJ says, walking backward away from you. You nod, not responding. It isn’t until he turns his back to you that you speak again.
“Wait, JJ,” you call out, and he turns back around, curious. “Maybe,” you pause, hesitant. “Maybe, we could meet up sometime?” You say, chewing on your bottom lip and avoiding eye contact.
He’s surprised to say the least. He wasn’t expecting you to want anything to do with him tonight let alone want to see him again. However, you take his pause as a rejection and immediately start to backtrack.
“I mean, we don’t have to. I just thought—,” you start to say before he cuts you off.
“I’d like that. You owe me a drink, after all,” he says jokingly, hoping to get you to smile again. It works, a grin making its way onto your face.
“Here,” you say, handing him your phone. He enters his number, sending himself a text.
His hand brushes yours when he hands you back your phone, a spark shooting up his arm at the contact.
Still smiling as you pocket the device, you say “I’ll see you soon, JJ.”
He smiles back and says “I’ll see you, (Y/N).”

➳ Last Kiss
❣︎ summary: JJ’s gone, but the memories aren’t.
❣︎ pairings: JJ Maybank x  Reader
Tumblr media
I still remember the look on your face
Lit through the darkness at 1:58
The words that you whispered for just us to know
You told me you loved me, so why did you go away?
Away
“I love you, (Y/N),” JJ had whispered to you in the dark room. You and JJ had been lying in his room at the chateau at 1:58 AM, just enjoying each other’s company. You can still hear those whispered words when you lay alone in your own room, replaying everything he’d ever said. He had told you that he loved you, so where was he now?
I do recall now, the smell of the rain
Fresh on the pavement, I ran off the plane
That July ninth, the beat of your heart
It jumps through your shirt, I can still feel your arms
The smell of rain was distinct as you departed the boat. You’re finally back from visiting family on the mainland, and you can’t wait to see JJ. You spot him immediately, running into his arms as he swings you around. You could feel his heartbeat through his shirt and his strong arms wrapped around your waist as he sets you back down, kissing you.
But now I’ll go
Sit on the floor wearin’ your clothes
All that I know is I don’t know
How to be somethin’ you miss
That day feels like forever ago now as you sit on your bedroom floor, wrapped in JJ’s old t-shirt that he’d left behind. You didn’t understand how your relationship could’ve fallen so far. How did you go from whispered “I love yous” to never speaking again? You didn’t understand anything at this moment. All that you knew is that you weren’t what he wanted anymore.
I never thought we’d have a last kiss
I never imagined we’d end like this
Your name, forever the name on my lips
If someone had told you just a few weeks ago that you and JJ would’ve had a last kiss, a last look, or a last touch, you would’ve laughed in their face. You never imagined there’d be an end to you and JJ, let alone an end as painful as this. You thought he was the one for you, you still do. You would say his name like a prayer until the day you died, but he would never say yours again.
I do remember the swing of you step
The life of the party, you’re showin’ off again
And I’d roll my eyes, and then you’d pull me in
I’m not much for dancin’, but for you, I did
JJ had always been the life of the party, showing off whenever he could. You’d roll your eyes good-naturedly at his antics, and he’d pull you in closer to him. You never liked dancing before JJ, but when he pulled you to the middle of the dance floor, you’d laugh and give in every time.
Because I love your handshake, meetin’ my father
I love how you walk with your hands in your pockets
How you’d kiss me when I was in the middle of saying something
There’s not a day I don’t miss those rude interruptions
JJ was a perfect gentleman the first time he met your father. From the moment they shook hands to the moment he walked away, your father adored him. You loved even the simplest things he did, like the way he walked or the way he’d kiss you when you went too far with your rants. Not a day goes by that you don’t miss his interruptions.
So I’ll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep
And I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe
And I’ll keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are
Hope it’s nice where you are
You don’t know why you still look at his Instagram. You know all it does is hurt you to see how he’s moved on. You can feel him forgetting you, and it’s killing you. You still keep in touch with the Pogues, just so that you can ask them how he’s doing. You hope it’s nice wherever JJ is now.
And I hope the sun shines, and it’s a beautiful day
And something reminds you you wish you had stayed
You can plan for a change in the weather and time
But I never planned on you changing your mind
You hope the sun is shining on JJ wherever he might be. You hope he’s having the time of his life. And you hope that something reminds him of you. Something that makes him regret every walking away. JJ could always plan for changes in the weather and time, but you never planned for him changing his mind.

➳ One More
❣︎ summary: A lust-filled night with Rafe and JJ pushes your limits.
❣︎ pairings: Rafe Cameron x Reader x JJ Maybank
❣︎ warnings: smutty smut smut, poorly written (I’m sorry, I’m bad at writing smut 😭)
Tumblr media
“Rafe, I— I can’t,” you whine, trying to escape the vibrator pressed against your aching clit. You were currently on top of JJ, your back against his chest, his cock buried deep in your pussy while Rafe held a vibrator to your swollen clit.
“One more, (Y/N). You can give us one more,” Rafe insists. You try to back away from the overstimulating vibrator but run into JJ’s firm chest behind you.
“You’re doing so well, baby. Just a little longer,” JJ soothes, whispering into your ear. You’re a whining, crying mess when the boys pull another orgasm out of you. You open your mouth in a silent scream as your pussy clenches around JJ’s cock, prompting his own orgasm.
“Fuck!” He yells, thrusting into you one last time, shooting hot ropes of cum into you. Watching you cum around JJ’s cock triggers Rafe’s orgasm too. He fists his cock, releasing onto your stomach. You sag against JJ, no longer aware of the world around you. You let out a little cry as JJ pulls out of you. Even the tiniest brush against your pussy is too much. JJ slowly slides out from under you, placing you gently on the mattress.
“You did amazing, sweetheart,” JJ mumbles, placing a kiss on your forehead. Your eyes flutter open briefly to see Rafe approaching with a towel.
You already know what’s coming and mutter a quiet, “No,” trying to close your legs.
Rafe easily pulls them apart again, saying, “Gotta make sure you’re clean, princess.” You hiss as he gently swipes at your abused sex, cleaning up the remnants of yours and JJ’s orgasms. He places a kiss on your inner thigh, mumbling praises into the skin before bringing the towel to your stomach, wiping away his own release. You barely register when he’s finished, only noticing when you feel JJ lie down beside you, pulling you against his chest.
“Always go good for us,” JJ whispers against the back of your head. You relax into his hold, feeling the post-orgasm bliss take over. The bed on your other side dips, and you open your eyes slightly to see Rafe pulling the covers over the three of you.
“Love you guys,” you mumble sleepily.
“We love you, too,” the boys say in unison. You fall asleep like that, caged between the two boys, and there’s no place you’d rather be.

➳ Hold On
❣︎ summary: A fight with Rafe escalates to an extreme you can’t turn back from.
❣︎ pairings: Rafe Cameron x Reader
❣︎ warnings: death, drug overdose
❣︎ author’s note: I have a cold or the flu, and these are my sick ramblings 😭
Tumblr media
Loving and fighting
Accusing, denying
I can't imagine a world with you gone
The joy and the chaos, the demons we're made of
I'd be so lost if you left me alone
Rafe loves you. He swears he does. But right now, you’re driving him insane.
“Who is she, Rafe! Don’t fucking lie to me!” You scream, an accusatory finger pointed at him.
His hands are clutching his hair in frustration as he says, “There’s no other girl, (Y/N)! You really think I’d cheat on you?”
“Then why won’t you tell me where you were, huh?” Rafe has no reply. He can’t tell you where he was. He can’t let you get involved in that part of his life. He won’t let the only light in his life succumb to his darkness. As far as he knows, you don’t have any demons. Boy, was he wrong.
You locked yourself in the bathroom
Lying on the floor when I break through
I pull you in to feel your heartbeat
Can you hear me screaming, “Please don’t leave me!”?
“Nothing?” You scoff. “Fine.” You turn on your heels, stomping to the bathroom as he calls after you.
Rafe was worried. You locked yourself in the bathroom an hour ago, and you weren’t answering his pleas to come out and talk. Eventually, he has enough of waiting around.
“(Y/N)?” He calls, knocking on the bathroom door. No answer. “(Y/N), at least let me know you’re okay.” He’s getting desperate now. He knocks again, harder this time, more insistent. “(Y/N), I will kick this damn door down if you don’t open it right now.” Still, no answer. Rafe sighs, takes a step back, and kicks the door with all his strength. The wood around the handle splinters, and the door opens a crack.
His heart drops the moment he opens the door fully and sees you lying on the floor, clearly unconscious, an empty pill bottle in your limp hand. He rushes to you, pulling you to him and leaning his ear against your chest, listening for a heartbeat. It’s faint, but it’s there.
“Come on, (Y/N/N). Don’t you dare leave me!” Rafe begs as he picks you up, rushing to his truck and placing you in the passenger side.
Long endless highway, you’re silent beside me
Driving a nightmare I can’t escape from
Helplessly praying, the light isn’t fading
Hiding the shock and the chill in my bones
The drive to the hospital feels endless. Still, it’s faster than waiting for an ambulance to arrive. You’re sitting motionless beside him, but he’s still hoping that at any second, you’ll wake up and this nightmare will be over.
Rafe prays to a god he doesn’t believe in, begging some higher power to not let the life seep out of your body. He’s desperately trying to keep calm, knowing he needs to be strong for you. He doesn’t know how much longer he can pretend.
They took you away on a table
I pace back and forth as you lay still
They pull you in to feel your heartbeat
Can you hear me screaming, “Please don’t leave me!”?
He carries you into the emergency room as soon as you arrive, getting the attention of any medical personnel. He only lets you go when the nurses put you on a gurney and wheel you into the operating room. He watches helplessly as they lean an ear against your chest, listening for a heartbeat.
“Please don’t leave me,” he sobs.
I don’t wanna let go
I know I’m not that strong
I just wanna hear you
Saying, “Baby, let’s go home”
Let’s go home
Yeah, I just wanna take you home
He feels like he’s drowning when a nurse approaches him and says the words he was dreading. He feels numb as he sits and stares at a spot on the wall, refusing to acknowledge the truth that was in front of him. He swears it’s real when he sees you bounding out of the operating room, smile on your face as you take his hand, saying, “Come on, Rafe. Let’s go home.”
Hold on, I still want you
Come back, I still need you
You look so peaceful. You’re wearing an elegant white dress, your hands folded on top of each other on your chest. He would’ve thought you were sleeping and would wake up any second now if he didn’t know better. But he did. And you would never wake up again. He would never hold you again.
He loves you. He needs you. And you were never coming back.

➳ Instead
❣︎ summary: You’re in JJ’s bed, but Rafe is in your head.
❣︎ pairings: JJ Maybank x Reader, Rafe Cameron x Reader
Tumblr media
You already know I can’t be with you
‘Cause I’m caught on someone else
Believe me when I say that I got issues
You’re better off alone, all by yourself
You and JJ are laying in the hammock outside John B.’s chateau, and your mind is racing about how you and JJ would never work. You’re a kook and he’s a pogue. Not to mention your on-again-off-again boyfriend, Rafe Cameron, JJ’s sworn enemy. All the odds are stacked against you.
JJ’s arm is wrapped around your shoulder, holding you close, knowing that you would be gone if he didn’t. JJ wasn’t stupid, he knew why you wouldn’t give in to him. It had everything to do with a certain kook, one that you couldn’t let go. You had told him a million times that you have “too many problems” and that he’d be “better off” without you, but he didn’t care. JJ knew it was stupid to get involved with you, but JJ has never backed out of something because it was stupid.
He keeps begging me to stay
You keep saying, “It’s okay”
I know I’ll be better off
If I stay in your bed tonight
He’s gon’ be in my head tonight
I’ll be sitting, thinking over every word you said
Every night you went back to Rafe, and every night he’d beg you to stay. JJ always said the same thing when you looked at him with your sad eyes, “It’s okay.” It wasn’t, and you knew that. You were stringing him along, but he loved you too much to let you go. You knew you’d be better off staying with JJ rather than going back to Rafe, but something always stopped you.
When you were with JJ, Rafe was the one who occupied your mind. Maybe it was simply easier to be with Rafe. That’s what everyone expected of you, but every night you went home to Rafe, and it was JJ that wouldn’t leave your mind. You’d replay every word he said, trying to find a reason to leave him and finding none.
He said I was his future wife
You showed me I was yours tonight
He’ll be sitting, thinking over every word he said
While I’m with you instead
Rafe always promised you the world. He swore that he’d marry you someday, even when JJ was claiming you as his. You knew Rafe was at home while you were in JJ’s bed, thinking over everything he ever said, wondering where it all went wrong. Wondering what led you into someone else’s arms.
I try to pull away, you pull me closer
Why am I afraid to let him go?
All this love made me bipolar
But helped me see what I don’t know
Every time JJ felt you pull away, he’d pull you closer, assuring you that everything was alright. You didn’t know why your were so afraid to walk away from Rafe. JJ was the better man. Everybody knew it. So, why did you always find your way back to Rafe? JJ’s love was confusing you, but maybe it was showing you something you’d been missing for so long.
He keeps begging me to stay
You and I are just a phase
I know I'll be better off
Now, you stood in front of Rafe, finally ready to walk away. He was begging you to stay, saying that you and JJ were just a phase. The two of you wouldn’t last. JJ wouldn’t be able to take care of you like he can. And yet, you knew you were better off with JJ anyway.
‘Cause I’ma be in your bed tonight
He won’t be in my head tonight
I’ll be sitting, loving every single word you said
Now, I’m with you instead

➳ Two Boys and a Ring
❣︎ summary: Rafe and JJ go ring shopping.
❣︎ author’s note: I had another idea while showering lol. Might end up making a series of drabbles where JJ, Rafe, and Reader are all in a relationship and the shenanigans the boys get into 😂
Tumblr media
Rafe and JJ are already bickering as they enter the jewelry shop.
“Why do you get final say?” JJ whines, trailing behind Rafe as they stroll into the store.
“Because I’m paying, genius,” Rafe replies, rolling his eyes at the blonde.
“I told you, I can pay,” JJ insists.
Rafe scoffs. “And what? Get her an arcade ring? Please.”
JJ starts to respond, but Rafe is already walking away from him toward the display cases. JJ rolls his eyes but follows anyway. JJ looks into the display case, his eyes bugging out at the prices listed.
“Holy shit,” JJ mutters to himself.
Unfortunately for him, Rafe hears. “That’s why I’m paying,” Rafe says, patting a gawking JJ on the shoulder before walking to another display case.
It takes awhile for the boys to finally decide on what ring to get you, but they end up deciding on an elegant diamond ring with swirls adorning the band. When it finally comes time to pop the questions, they fight to be the one putting the ring on your finger, but JJ ultimately gets to because he was able to swipe the ring off Rafe at the last minute. Obviously, you say “yes,” and the three of you celebrate your engagement by spending the night tangled up on your bed.

Rafe’s Ending
This is it. This is the moment you make the choice that will determine the rest of your life. You stand outside the chateau with JJ, the same place you kissed for the first time just a week ago. You can tell from the look on his face that he knows what you brought him here for. He waits for you to speak. Waits for you to tear his heart in two.
“JJ—.”
“You don’t have to sugarcoat it, (Y/N).” He cuts you off, speaking softly. “I was too late.” You nod, tears brimming in your eyes.
“I’ll always love you, JJ,” you cut yourself off.
“Just not as much as Rafe,” JJ says for you.
“I’m sorry,” you say, and you mean it. You didn’t want to break his heart. He was the person you loved most once upon a time, but now you love someone else more.
JJ smiles sadly, blinking tears away. He steps toward you, leaning down to kiss your forehead one last time.
“I do love you. I hope you know that,” he whispers against your head.
“I do,” you answer.
With one last look at you, JJ turns around, walking away from you and out of your life for good.
When you arrive at the hotel room, you find Rafe pacing in your room, anxiety radiating off of him in waves. Time freezes when he notices you, relief and apprehension flashing in his eyes.
“(Y/N)—,” he starts but doesn’t get the chance to finish when you’re running over to him, crashing your lips against his. He stills for a moment, taken by surprise before he’s wrapping his arms around you and leaning into the kiss.
“I choose you,” you say breathlessly as you pull away.
“What?” He asks, not sure he heard you correctly.
You giggle at the confused crease between his eyebrows.
“I choose you, Rafe.”
“Oh, thank God,” he says, closing his eyes, trying to calm his racing heart. “Thought you were coming back to tell me you were staying,” he confesses.
“I could never, not without you. I love you too much.”
He smiles. “I love you, too,” he says, leaning in to kiss you again.
You leave the Outer Banks, along with your first love, with Rafe that day. You never regret your decision, although you still think of JJ sometimes. You and Rafe eventually get married, settle down, and have a couple of kids. You live out the rest of your lives together in a cozy home on the Gold Coast, loving each other just as much as the first day. You never hear from JJ again, but you hope he was able to get out of the Outer Banks like he always wanted. Maybe even meet a nice girl to spend his life with. Regardless, you’re happy with your decision. JJ will always have a place in your heart, but it’s Rafe that carefully holds it in the palm of his hands.
JJ’s Ending
You’ve made your decision. As hard as it was, you now know who you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Rafe is doing some last-minute packing when you enter his room. He looks up as soon as you enter, his face dropping at the expression on yours.
“I can’t go back to Florida with you,” you blurt out before your courage fades. Rafe stops his packing and moves to stand directly in front of you.
“Of course, you can. (Y/N)—,” he begins, but you cut him off.
“Rafe,” you interrupt him. He stops and just looks at you, taking you in for what is most likely the last time.
“Say it,” he whispers.
“I love you, I do,” you start, not wanting to say anymore.
“Say the rest.”
“I love JJ more,” you confess, watching as the tears well up in his eyes. He doesn’t say anything, nodding slowly. You watch as he digs in his pockets for a moment before pulling out his car keys and putting them in your hand.
“Go,” he says simply.
You don’t go right away, instead taking the time to hug him one more time. “Thank you,” you say into his chest. He doesn’t say anything. When you finally pull away, his face is stoic, masking the pain you knew he was feeling. Neither of you say anything as you grab your suitcase and walk out the door, leaving the past eight years of your life behind.
When you arrive at JJ’s place, he’s in his yard, fiddling with his bike. He hears you pull up and stops to look as you pull up.
“(Y/N)? Shouldn’t you be—.” He doesn’t get the chance to finish his thought before you’re hopping out of the truck and barreling into him, crashing your lips against his. JJ kisses you back immediately, forgetting what he was about to say the moment he has you in his arms.
When you pull back from the kiss, you tell him, “I love you.”
He chuckles, brushing your hair out of your face. “I love you, too. But what’s the occasion?”
“I’m staying. I’m not going back to Florida,” your words come out in a rush of excitement. You watch as JJ’s eyes widen in understanding.
“Does that mean—.”
“Yes. I want to be with you, you idiot,” you laugh, impatient. You’re taken by surprise when JJ lifts you up, spinning you around. You squeal with joy, laughing the whole time.
When JJ finally puts you back down, he says, “You won’t regret it.”
“I know,” you reply.
He was right. You and JJ live out the rest of your lives together in the Outer Banks. Everyday with him is an adventure, and the two of you never quite settle down, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s late when JJ drops you back off at the hotel. You had spent the whole day catching up with him, just talking about life the past few years. He kisses you on the cheek in front of the door to your room, saying goodbye and promising to text you. He waits until you’re safely in your room before leaving, a stupid smile plastered on his face.
You hear the TV from the adjoined room the moment you open the door, telling you that Rafe was already back. You take a deep breath, preparing yourself for when will he inevitably enter your room to talk to you. You’re proven right when you hear the TV turn off and soft footsteps on the carpet floor. You preoccupy yourself with putting your purse away so as not to let Rafe know you were expecting him.
“How was it?” He asks from behind you. You turn to see him leaning on the door frame, his arms crossed over his chest.
“It was good. We talked,” you say vaguely.
“Good,” is all he says.
You sigh. “Rafe, we need to talk.”
He runs a hand over his face, saying, “I know.” There’s a brief pause before either of you says anything.
“You said you love me,” you begin and watch as he nods in affirmation. “Why now?”
“I don’t know. I guess I got tired of waiting for you to notice it yourself,” he says, shrugging as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
You’re still thinking of a reply when he speaks. “Did Maybank finally man up and tell you how he feels?”
Your eyes snap to his. “You knew?”
He rolls his eyes. “Everyone knew,” he says.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Why didn’t I tell the girl I love that the boy she loves, loves her back?” He says sarcastically. You guess he had a point when he put it like that.
“So, what? You guys a thing now?” He asks a little too nonchalantly. You knew he was hurt and trying to hide it, but the bite in his words still stung.
“No,” you reply honestly.
“Why not?”
“Because of you.”
He blinks. “What about me?” A tinge of hope was audible in his voice, and he looks away, hoping to mask it.
“I couldn’t agree to be with JJ without seeing what there was between us,” you admit.
“What are you saying?” He asks hesitantly.
“I’m saying that… I want to explore the feeling I have for you and JJ.” Rafe just squints at you, confused.
“JJ asked for one week to prove to me that he loves me, so if you agree to it—.”
“You want to date both of us,” he finishes for you.
You hesitate before answering, “Yes.”
Rafe thinks for a moment. You can almost see the cogs turning in his brain.
“You’re crazy, y’know that?” He chuckles. “Fine, if this is what you want, I can put up with this ‘The Bachelor’ shit for a week.”
You squeal in excitement, running to wrap him in a hug.
“Having two guys pining over you makes you that happy?” He teases, and you pull away, rolling your eyes.
“Shut up.”
“Make me,” he challenges. You oblige, tilting your head up to bring your lips to his.
You spend the rest of the week alternating your time between JJ and Rafe. With each day that passes, you find yourself falling harder for both of them. By day three, you knew you were in trouble.
With JJ, nothing was certain. He brought with him a sense of adventure. But he could be reckless. You knew that a life with him would be a life full of chaos and excitement. You would both be working for the rest of your lives, but you get the feeling of being young forever.
With Rafe, however, things were safe. Rafe was consistent, dutifully sticking to schedule. He could be impulsive but not quite as reckless as JJ. Life with him would be stable, comfortable. You’d be able to retire and still live comfortably, but you wonder if you’d ever feel alive like you did with JJ.
The problem was, you could imagine life with both JJ and Rafe, but you could only choose one. It was clear that they both loved you in their own way, and you loved them too. The deadline was fast-approaching, and you were no closer to deciding who you wanted to be with.
Before you knew it, the day was here. News that transportation back to the mainland was back up brought with it the end of your time in the Outer Banks. Now, you had a choice to make. Would you go with Rafe back to Florida? Or would you stay in the Outer Banks with JJ?

You’re sitting in your bedroom listening to music when your phone starts ringing. You recognize the ringtone to be JJ’s and pick up immediately.
“JJ?” You ask nervously. ‘Why is he calling this late?’ You wonder frantically.
“Hey, (Y/N). You busy?” His voice sounds strained, like he’s in pain.
“No, why? JJ, are you okay?”
“Um, not really. Can— can you come pick me up? I don’t think I should be driving right now,” he says, laughing a little breathlessly.
“Text me the address. I’m on my way,” you tell him, already grabbing your car keys and heading out the door. JJ mumbles some type of acknowledgement that you ignore, and you hang up, plugging the address he sent you into the GPS and peeling out of the driveway.
Your GPS leads you to a house party. The party seems to be in full swing when you pull onto the crowded street. You spot JJ almost immediately. He’s sitting on the curb in front of the house, head in his hands. You pull up in front of him, not bothering to park properly before jumping out of the car and jogging to his side.
“JJ,” you say softly, prompting him to look at you.
When he does, you notice that his eyes are red and puffy. The realization that he’s been crying hits you like a ton of bricks. You’ve only seen him cry a handful of times in the years that you’ve known him, so seeing him like this confuses you.
“Let’s get out of here, J,” you urge softly, placing a hand on his shoulder. He begins to stand up but stumbles a bit, leaning on you for support.
“Have you been drinking?” You ask, your voice laced with concern.
“Not enough,” he mumbles, taking a step toward your car. You decide to ignore his retort and help him enter the vehicle instead. Once he’s settled in the passenger seat, you walk to the other side of the car and get in, quickly pulling off the street and heading in the direction of your house. You don’t want Luke seeing him in this state.
The entire ride to your house is silent. You don’t know what to say, and JJ doesn’t offer any information. Once you arrive at your house, you help him into the living room where he plops on your couch, a heavy sigh escaping him. You take the seat next to him, making sure to keep an appropriate distance.
“What happened, J?” You inquire hesitantly.
He sniffles before saying, “Kie and I broke up.”
You’re shocked to say the least. You had been keeping your distance but had heard that they were going strong. You’re sitting in stunned silence when he speaks again.
“Fuck. I knew I should’ve followed the rules. ‘No pogue on pogue macking.’” He rants, doing finger quotes for the last part of the sentence.
“If I had known I was gonna get my heart broken anyway, I would’ve taken the risk with you,” he continues rambling. You almost miss his implication. Almost.
“What did you say?” You ask, eyes wide as saucers.
“If I had known—.”
“I heard what you said,” you cut him off. “I need to know what you meant.”
He finally meets your eyes, and for a moment, his mind seems to clear. “If I knew how it would’ve ended with Kie, I would’ve gone after the girl I really love.”
“And who is that?” You say breathily. You need to hear him say it. You need to know you aren’t imagining his words.
“You, (Y/N). It’s always been you.”
You feel the air leave your lungs at his confession. It’s all you’d ever wanted to hear from him.
“I never should have gotten with Kie, but I was too scared to ruin our friendship to tell you how I felt, so I settled for the next best thing.” JJ explains. “I know it hurt you, and I’m sorry. I never wanted to hurt you.”
You nod. “I know, J.” A beat of silence. “Where do we go from here?” You ask tentatively.
“I think… I think I want to give us a shot, when I get over this thing with Kie. If you still want me?”
“I’ll alway want you, JJ,” you promise. “But I need to know I’m not a rebound.”
“I understand. I’ll prove to you that you’re not. Whatever it takes.”
Two Months later
You’re the happiest you’ve ever been. You and JJ started officially dating a week ago, and you can safely say that it’s everything you’ve ever dreamed about. He and Kie talked things out for the sake of the friend group and agreed that things were better this way. JJ never missed a chance to prove to you how much he loved you.
You and JJ are lounging in your bed watching TV when he suddenly speaks.
“Thank you for picking up my call that night.”
You look at him, love shining in your eyes. “I’ll always come running if you ask me to.”

Take This To the Grave
Tumblr media
✎ author’s note: Okay, so I started this as soon as I got back from work because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Thank you to everyone who was hyping this idea up lol.

JJ did not want to get up. The sun was beaming down on him through the window, but he refused to open his eyes. Lying on his side, he reached out an arm, intent on feeling (Y/N)’s body against his. You can imagine his surprise when he was met with something hard and firm under his palm. His eyes snap open, only to see his palm resting on none other than Rafe Cameron’s bare chest. He recoils immediately, rubbing his hand against his leg as if he had touched poison.
Rafe was woken up when he felt a calloused hand on his chest. His eyes fluttered open and he looked to his right, searching for (Y/N). Instead, he was met with JJ Maybank lying next to him.
“Shit.” He heard JJ mumble. JJ had turned to face the ceiling, rubbing sleep from his eyes. Rafe is still too tired to make any attempts to get up, so he chooses to stare at the ceiling instead.
Rafe sighs. “She really left, huh?”
“Yup,” JJ replies shortly. The scene was comical. Two boys who hated each other were lying naked in a bed together, the girl who brought them together nowhere to be found.
“We don’t talk about this to anyone,” Rafe states, still staring at nothing.
“Nope,” JJ says quickly. As if they were one person, both boys sit up from the bed, scrambling to get their clothes back on and trying their best not to make eye contact with the other.
JJ leaves as fast as he can, making sure that no one sees him leave Rafe Cameron’s house at 9:00 in the morning.

You’re woken up the next morning by the sound of your door opening. You open your eyes to see Rafe walking into your room from his, carrying a tray of waffles.
“Morning,” he says in greeting, setting the tray on the nightstand. “Got your favorite,” Rafe states, gesturing to the tray full of food.
“Thanks,” you mumble, rubbing sleep from your eyes. “How’s it looking?” You ask, waving your hand toward the window, referring to the storm that wreaked havoc the night before.
“Not great. It looks like everything’s gonna be down for awhile,” Rafe answers, opening the blinds. He was right. It looked like a tornado had hit.
“Damn,” you mutter to yourself. The sound of your phone ringing pulls you out of your worried thoughts. Glancing at the screen, you see a familiar name pop up: JJ Maybank.
“I’ll let you get that,” Rafe says, striding out of the room.
Hesitantly, you swipe the screen, putting the phone to your ear.
“JJ?”
“Oh, thank god,” JJ breathes a sigh of relief on the other end. “Are you okay? I’ve been trying to reach you since last night, but nothing was going through.”
A funny feeling in your stomach makes itself known at the thought of JJ being worried about you.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay. I guess the phone lines were down,” you answer, reassuring him. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. That storm was a bitch. Listen, are you busy today?”
“Uh, no, why?” You reply, wondering where he was going with this.
“Can we meet up? I— I’ve missed you, and since we were interrupted last night, I thought that—,” JJ rambles.
“JJ,” you interrupt him.
“Yeah?”
“Of course, we can. What time?”
“Noon? Send me the address, and I’ll pick you up.”
“Sounds good,” you confirm. “And, JJ?” He hums in question. “I’ve missed you, too.”
A pause. “I’ll see you soon, (Y/N),” JJ says, hanging up the phone.
After eating your breakfast, you take a quick shower, getting ready to meet JJ.
With an hour to spare, you decide to try and talk to Rafe. You’re still not exactly sure what happened last night, but you were determined to find out.
When you enter his room, you find him shirtless with a towel wrapped around his waist. Clearly, he had just stepped out of the shower.
“Shit!” You exclaim, quickly turning around and covering your eyes. “I’m so sorry! The door was open, and I thought—,” you stop when you hear a chuckle behind you.
“It’s fine, (Y/N),” Rafe says. You hear the sound of clothes ruffling behind you, and then he says, “You can open your eyes now.”
Slowly, you do. He’s smirking when you look at him. You cross your arms over your chest. “You think this is funny,” you accuse.
Rafe laughs at that. “A little bit,” he admits. “You’re cute when you’re flustered.”
You feel a blush creep onto your cheeks at his compliment. “Anyway,” you say, trying to change the subject. You’re about to ask if you could talk, but you notice that he’s dressed in a polo shirt and shorts, looking like he’s going somewhere. “Are you going somewhere?”
“Yeah, Top and Kelce wanted to catch up. That okay?”
“Yeah, I’m actually meeting up with JJ in a few.”
Rafe’s smile drops. “Oh,” he says quietly.
“Rafe—,” you begin, although you’re not sure what you want to say.
“It’s okay,” he says, cutting you off. “I meant what I said last night. I’ll be here when you decide what, or who, you want.” You’re stopped from responding when you’re phone pings with a text.
JJ: Outside
“You should go. Don’t wanna keep him waiting,” Rafe says, his voice laced with what could only be described as hurt.
You open your mouth to reply, but he’s already turning away from you, picking up his phone. Sighing, you decide to leave it alone for now. Going back to your room, you grab your purse and leave the hotel room.
You spot JJ quickly once you get outside. He’s sitting atop his motorcycle, scrolling on his phone.
“You still have that thing?” You say in lieu of a greeting. He looks up at the sound of your voice, a smile appearing on his face.
“Of course, I do. Why wouldn’t I?”
You shrug. “Thought maybe you’d be done with it the last time you almost died.”
He laughs like you just said something crazy. You suppose that, to him, you had.
“Ready to go?” He asks, leaning forward on the bike and grabbing the handles.
You nod and move to straddle the bike, wrapping your arms tightly around him when you’re settled.
“Good?” He asks, looking over his shoulder at you.
“Yeah, I’m good. Where are we going?”
“You’ll see,” he says, starting up the motorcycle. You hold on tight as he peels out of the parking lot.
It’s a short ride to your destination, and you recognize it immediately. The chateau. The place where you and your friends spent many late nights and early mornings. The place where you all made the promise that you couldn’t keep. A wave of sadness washes over you. Your mind wonders to what could have been if you had never left, but you brush it away.
‘No use dwelling on the past,’ you think.
JJ pulls to a stop in front of the house and hops off the bike, extending a hand for you to take.
“What are we doing here?” You ask, utterly confused.
“Well, I’m a sucker for symbolism, and what’s more symbolic than the gang’s old hideout?” JJ explains.
“Come on,” he urges.
Everything looks exactly like it did eight years ago. It was like a moment stuck in time. JJ leads you to the place where you and the other pogues had memorialized your friendship. “P4L” was still engraved in the tree, as clear as the day it was written. You stop at the tree, willing yourself not to cry at the sight.
“Pogues for life,” you read aloud, tracing the letters with your finger.
“What happened?” JJ asks solemnly. You know what he means. He means, ‘Why did you break your promise?’
“We were kids, J,” you turn away from the tree to look at him instead. “We were all kids. And kids make promises they can’t keep.”
“I’m sorry,” JJ says. You give him a puzzled look, and he continues, “I’m sorry I made you feel so alone. I’m sorry I made you feel like you couldn’t talk to me.”
“It’s not your fault. As if I was going to tell my best friend that I was in love with him,” you say, chuckling at the absurdity of the idea. JJ doesn’t find it funny.
“I wish you would have. Maybe then I could have told you that I was in love with you too.”
Your eyes almost popped out of your head at his words. “What?”
“You weren’t the only one in love with their best friend but too scared to say it,” he says, confirming that you heard him correctly the first time.
“But— but what about Kie?”
“I loved Kie, but I wasn’t in love with her. It just took me too long to realize it.”
You didn’t notice until now that you had stepped closer to JJ. So close that you were breathing the same air.
His hand comes up to cup your face as he whispers, “God, I missed you.”
“J—,” you start but don’t get to finish as his lips descend on yours. For the second time in 24 hours, you were kissing someone you never thought you’d kiss, and you were enjoying it. What feels like hours but must have been seconds pass before either of you pulls away.
You close your eyes and turn away from JJ. Your mind is going a mile a minute as you try to regain your breath.
“What’s wrong?” You hear him ask from behind you. Before you can even answer, he speaks again. “It’s Rafe, isn’t it?”
Your eyes snap open and you start to panic. ‘How does he know? Is it that obvious?’
“Talk to me, (Y/N/N),” he begs, trying to turn you to face him.
“We kissed. Rafe and I,” you blurt out, whirling around to face him. He recoils as if he had been slapped.
“When?”
“Last night.”
“Fuck,” JJ says, running a hand over his face. You didn’t know what to say. You still loved JJ, you were sure of that. But it was Rafe that was there for you when JJ wasn’t. It was Rafe that’s been there for you when you didn’t have anyone else, and you couldn’t deny that you’ve thought about Rafe that way before you kissed him.
“Do you love him?” JJ asks.
“I don’t know,” you answer honestly.
“Do you love me?”
You reply immediately, “Yes.”
“But you think you love Rafe too,” JJ says, and you admire his ability to always know what you’re thinking. You nod.
You can tell that JJ is planning something without him having to say it.
“When do you go back to Florida?”
“Whenever we can get back to the mainland. Last night’s storm delayed everything for at least a week,” you explain.
JJ nods, an idea solidifying in his mind. “Give me a week,” he says suddenly.
“What?”
“Give me a week to prove to you that I’m serious about this. About us. If you don’t believe me by the end of the week, I’ll let you go.”
You think for a moment about how many ways this could go wrong. This could only end with someone getting their heart broken. Whether it was you, JJ, or Rafe was to be determined. Regardless, you find yourself agreeing.
“Okay, you get one week.”
JJ is ecstatic. His face lights up like a kid in a candy store, but you’re not done.
“On one condition.”
His face drops. “What?” He asks, voice filled with trepidation.
“So does Rafe.”
And that was how you had two boys—two boys who hated each other—competing for your love. How could this go wrong?
