Day 104 – All inclusive at the Zuri

Breakfast was a buffet. J was very happy to see that in addition to the standard breakfast fare, they had cold meats, vegetables and hummus. We opted for that as an alternative to the usual breakfast food.

After yesterday’s experience at the bar, we contemplated looking into the all inclusive option. This would give us unlimited drinks and include lunch as well, so we can sleep in on some days. While we were discussing this, the Guest Services manager, Veronika, came up to our table to introduce herself. We asked her if we could upgrade to the all inclusive package and she said yes, for a modest additional amount, which we found reasonable. We then chatted with her for a few minutes. She told us that she had worked for 8 years at Disney World and was supposed to be starting a new job working on a cruise ship out of Florida, but upon arrival in March 2020, was told the cruise lines had just shut and she had to return to the Czech Republic. They put her on the last plane to the Czech Republic. She just started at this hotel 3 weeks ago, having been at home for a year. This resort is owned by a Czech company, so it makes sense that she would come here. We mentioned that we had mostly seen Germans and Russians throughout our travel. Just then, some guy came up to us and asked us what we were saying about the Germans travelling. He then joined the conversation. He is a German guy named Roman. It seems that he and his mother have been travelling for the past few months, bouncing around, similar to us. So far they had been to Costa Rica and Brazil, and now, Zanzibar. They are also going on a similar safari next week, but haven’t yet booked theirs.

Veronika took us up to Reception to upgrade us. We were given new wristbands which indicated we were all inclusive (see photo below). The wristbands also act as your door key as well, so you never forget your room key in the room. It is pretty nifty technology, but J nonetheless still carries hers around and doesn’t wear it.

We then went down to the pool, ordered our all-inclusive drinks and hung out for the afternoon. At one point, one of the bartenders came by and asked us to sign our bill. Somehow our bill included a burger, which they had inadvertently charged to our room. Somebody may have gotten a free burger. We didn’t care as it didn’t cost us anything. The good news – we now know that there are burgers available, not just the advertised vegan vegetarian modifiable fare.

Dinner was a ‘Middle Eastern’ buffet. The food was not as good as on Zanzibar night, but that might be because we’re both big fans of Middle Eastern food, especially Lebanese and Turkish food, and had higher hopes. Many of the dishes were slightly ‘off’ from what one might expect. For example, they served beef kofte rather than lamb kofte, and instead of serving grilled halloumi, they served small chunks of halloumi sauteed with bell peppers. Strange. Nevertheless, we enjoyed dinner.

Prior to this trip, we always avoided all inclusive. But to be honest, it all depends on a comparison of the drink prices to the cost of the upgrade. We will go with whatever option appears to be more cost effective.
