Of all the things that she found in her mother’s house, the envelope full of cash was the most jarring. It was the fact that it was a significant amount of money, that didn’t really bother her other than the fact that she was surprised it remained unspent. Her mother had that minor drug problem near the end, and this was a very significant amount of money.

No, the most shocking part of the whole ordeal was the note tucked in with the bills. “For Scout, with love, Logan” in an eerily familiar script. The blonde dropped the note as soon as she read it. Why the hell would her former boss, the man who made the most difficult two years of her life even harder, write her this note with what had to be almost half a million dollars in cash. Before she even knew what she was doing, Scout crumpled the note up in her pocket and grabbed her keys. She drove the familiar route to the government building, full of the same anxious fear like she was nineteen years old again.

It was almost exactly the same as it was eight years ago, and she quickly pushed through the doors following the signs to the elevator. He was Senator Callegari now, a step up from the humble first term state representative he’d been when she worked here. His office was bigger now, and mercifully empty. She pushed the door open and stepped through, pulling the note from her pocket.

“Uh, excuse me Senator?” Her voice was shaky, “I am not sure if you remember me but I’m Scout Calhoun and I used to work for you like eight years ago.” She paused, unable to figure out how to go on. So she stepped forward and dropped the note on his desk. “I found this in my mother’s house.”
