01. The Corpe.

Ad astra per aspera.

His eyes were stuck on the black inked that was heavily tattooed on the pale flesh, lips sealed shut into a firm line. Though it shouldn't be all that big matters for someone to ink their flesh like a canvas, those words was likely familiar. Familiar in a way where he couldn't brought himself to even remember why.

Somehow, he had thought he had seen those words scribbled somewhere.

The inspection was finished. The report should be on its way after Minseok finished his final documentation of the cause of death for the victim. And the death certificate to be hand over to the victim's family afterward. If there's one to be begin with. Such thought brings a big lump of burden already to the shorter male, as he sighs.

Mutilated. Several parts were severely burned when they found the body, scattered in multiples places in the house. The head of chief didn't said anything precisely of the matters to him, still bitter over the last arguments. And Baekhyun didn't want to force that matter out from either Minseok or Chief Seo, for he's not require to present the case at the trial with all of the juries soon. If they want to keep things as a secret, then so be its.

Baekhyun pulls out the bloodied glove from his hands, starting from his waist down to the tip of his fingers ー turning the glove inside out before he holds the peeled glove with the other, repeating the process over again by inserting his finger inside the glove at the top of his wrist. He turns the second glove inside out, tilting them away from his body as he walks toward the disposal bins.

Just as he is about to clean his hands at the sink, Minseok walks in with all the documentation in hands. He looks dreadful, forehead wrinkled into a frown as he puts the papers down at the table.

"Something wrong?" He gently props, turning his back again to wash his hands. Yet, it's meet with a deafening silence.

Closing the tap, he grabs the toilet paper and wipes them off.

"What?"

Minseok insisted on keeping his silence, fixing the glasses that almost fall from the bridge of his nose ー eyes still scanning over the documents. Probably yesterday reports or the reports that the lab have given earlier.

Clearly, something had gone wrong. The older man pulls out his working glasses, letting it fall to his chest, hanging. "Remember the body that we operated last week?"

The said male frowns, "Last week?"

Minseok nods slowly, "Same tattoo. Same conditions. Face ruined. Total disaster."

"Should have said that earlier," Baekhyun grumbles, and Minseok toothily grins up to the young man. He points toward the covered body, stepping beside Baekhyun with his arms crosses. "Seo thinks it's a serial. But the method were different, apparently. The only similarity between these two killers were how they handled the body afterwards."

Baekhyun looks over to the body, taking over the silhouette. "Figured."

Minseok grabs a hold of his shoulders, "One is a mess, while this one do look like he cleaned his mess up."

"Yet, we found no matching DNA or finger print or cells on both of the body," Baekhyun points out, pities coats over his tones.

The older hums in agreement but choose not to say anything regarding that. There's no verbal explanation why. When there should be something. The cut was too precise, perfectly done. Even the ropes that bound around the victim's wrist and feet brought negative feedback to the lab.

They couldn't depend on the details that the officer had given, since most of them brought nothing to the light. No apparent witnesses, surprisingly.

The first victim that Minseok mentioned was reported missing three months ago. Woman in a mid twenty, black hair and a small stature. Both of her hands were amputated. Bones to her feet were shattered. Tongue been crudely cut off with a sharp objects. And the tattoo, it was craved inside of her thigh.

While the newest one was found dead in a warehouse, a mile away from his apartment complex after been reported missing by his wife three months ago. The body was in a fatal condition. Totally amputated. Up from his head, to his feet. The officers had to put those bodies in separated plastic bag.

The man finger print were damaged. The scarring was severe, being smoother across something rough, enough to put pain and skins to tear apart. And Baekhyun expected it to be sandpaper. But it's not just that. The finger tips were put under fire until the scarring tissues formed.

The tanned male may had braced himself for such situations, but why the killer need to put so much energy in doing so? He could have just burned the tips. And even if the killer did intended to alter the victim's fingerprints off, it didn't seemed he was doing a pretty good job at it.

"I think that's all for today," Minseok cocks his eyebrows over the dead body with a strained smile attaches on his weary face. "Let's put this away," he expresses, as he places his palms against the top of the bed, where the corpse are laying and pushed them toward the mortuary. Baekhyun walked over with the new sticker to be stick at the front door of the corpse, silently pulls it open, as Minseok ties a string with a small bell around the corpse's feet. It's not necessary, but Minseok likes to keep things in his way, following the old method although Baekhyun had constantly refused because it makes his hair stands out.

The dead bell, Minseok once said, when Baekhyun had constantly addressed his discomfort with the method. It originally origins from the middle ages since those people belief on supernatural things are oddly strong. Even the church itself condoned the used of the bell to chase away the bad spirits. Clearly, one that have already baptised, because once it does, it's believe by many to possess the power to ward off evil spells and spirits. And the use of the deal bell was common, typical in their belief, rung for the recently deceased to ward off the spirits. And although it may sounds ridiculous, Minseok thought of its as a step to be careful, since you will never know if bad things will happened to you.

"They usually rings the bell twice, before they buried the corpse," Minseok breaks the silent, when Baekhyun carefully locks the door of the mortuary. The older male waits for Baekhyun, hands in the front pocket of his coat, "but since I know those bells will annoyed you, we won't do that."

Baekhyun rolls his eyes, "Yea, thanks for the concern."

Minseok tips off his head, laughing. Then they begins to clean up the morgue, putting everything back to order. Baekhyun reached out for his winter coat, after wrapping the red scarf around his neck and take out his phone in the pocket of the coat. It had been turned off. Didn't find any reason to keep it on, since he had a fight with his mother last week, and believed the old woman won't just put it down easily. And true to his instincts, soon as his phone was on, the first thing he saw were the list of missed calls from his mother. Along with couple of texts that asked about his whereabouts. None of them was trying to amend the feud between them. Baekhyun stares at the screen, opting if he should reply but decided to ignore it.

Minseok watched his movements through the corner of his eyes, following each steps until they're inside the elevator. "Your mom called me yesterday."

Baekhyun fixed his bags, staring ahead as he sighs at the mention of his mother. "I'm sorry," he apologized, embarrassed that his mother could go that far to reach out to him. But Minseok dismissed him with a gentle pat against his arms and a hum.

"She said she had something important to tell. A family emergency, she said," Minseok continues and he smiles when it managed to hook the tanned male's attention. The elevator rings, signaling that they have arrived at the lobby floor. Minseok walks out, "Better call her back to make sure everything is fine, young man. You don't want to do an autopsy on any of your family member, believe me." Then, he bids the tanned male a goodbye, before walking off to his car, leaving Baekhyun dumbfounded.

Minseok's words did rang throughout his entire walks to his car, and Baekhyun loathes it when the older male had such strong affects on his head. Groaning, he places his bag at the passenger seat and dialed his mother's number. The ringing resonates through the dialing, and Baekhyun presses the ignition before the line connects.

"Mom-" his words are blatantly been cut off by his mother's crying, and his fingers froze against the steering ywheel, heart thumping. "B, your aunt," the woman sobs through the line, and Baekhyun's grip on the steering wheel tighten, knuckles turned white.

"She's missing."
