Found this video of Sam Neill with Russell Howard on YouTube and I absolutely needed to make GIFs. His smile, his laughter... He's so cute.

Today, our thoughts are with Sam Neill following his cancer diagnosis. Sam Neill was mentioned in our show (See clip), and "Event Horizon" (1997) is an integral part of our production. In addition to including Eric Harris and Susan Dewitt watching the film at Eric's home on April 17th, 1999, several scenes in our show are named after quotes from the film. We wish him and his loved ones the best during this difficult time.

We're back! After a short hiatus, it's nice to get lost in some dinosaurs and superheroes! Why is Owen acting like a stereotypical Black dad in Jurassic World Dominion? Is Young Justice the best superhero show right now? Why do we keep watching The Boys after scenes like THAT one? You know the one! And will Gaby or Colin ever say anything? Tune in to find out! Thanks for listening!

There are plans to watch Hunt For The Wilderpeople (a Taika film) on Sunday at 8pm UK time/3pm ET/12pm PT. Tweeting on #huntforthepiratehome. It’s on Netflix I think in the US, but for those of us in the UK if you can rent (£1,99) or buy (£5.99) from Apple. Or get it for free if you sign up for a 7-day trial of MGM on Amazon.
Details from @gentlebeardsbarngrill ‘s newsletter below.

I have an idea for a prequel of the current book I’m writing. my current book is an urban fantasy that is set in modern times (not specified). the prequel would be written from the point of view of one of my mentor characters when he was younger, however as this war only occurred about 50-70 years ago, i fear i will have to specify the expected age for this mentor, whose appearance and mental age generally don’t fit. how do i combat this?
Hmm... I'm not entirely sure I understand your question.
Are you saying that your character has a younger appearance/mental age and undisclosed biological age in the first book, but involvement in a past war is important to his back story--which will be the subject of the prequel--and so you're worried about outing his actual age and that it won't make sense with the age he appears to be in book one?
If that's the case, I think maybe you need to be more honest about this character's age in book one. First off, do try to remember that age really is just a number... how a person appears and behaves is only marginally dictated by their biological age. Take these actors for example:
Tumblr media
Wilford Brimley and Paul Rudd are both 50 in the above photos. Don Ameche and Sam Neill are both 76 in the above photos. Changing attitudes toward age, better healthcare, and personal differences illustrate a pretty drastic difference between these two sets of men who are the same ages. So, even if your character has an older biological age, don't think that means they can't still be young-looking, fit, and fun. But you do have to be honest about it, and there are lots of opportunities for illustrating that this character seems much younger than they actually are.
Happy writing!

Hateration holleration, teevee edition, with important new critical evaluation features:
APPLES NEVER FALL (2024): Engrossing, often funny seven-part mystery-drama, based on a novel by Liane Moriarty, about the dysfunctional family of retired tennis pros Stan and Joy Delaney (Sam Neill and Annette Bening), whose four adult kids — rich dipshit Troy (Jake Lacy), hot mess Amy (Alison Brie), perpetually resentful Brooke (Essie Randles), and neurotic underachiever Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner) — begin to unravel after Joy mysteriously disappears. Did Stan kill her? Does Joy's disappearance have something to do with their former houseguest Savannah (Georgia Flood), a troubled young woman who had persuaded Joy and Stan to take her in under what may have been false pretenses? Everyone knows something more than they're telling, as the situation brings old resentments bubbling to the surface. Perhaps a smidgen too arch for its own good, and the shifting flashback structure sometimes makes it hard to keep track of the sequence of events, but consistently interesting and refreshingly nuanced, with well-drawn characters and excellent performances. (Neill, Bening, and Flood are particularly good.) Only the finale falls short: Certain key character motivations remain murky, and the final scenes are a bit flat, perhaps an inevitable consequence of a story that flits between tones and genres in a way that leaves it without a natural endpoint. Also, the South Florida setting isn't always convincing; big portions of the series were actually shot in Australia. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Yes! (More than one, even.) VERDICT: Flawed but worthwhile.
THE BROTHERS SUN (2024): One-season action-comedy-drama series about an infamous triad underboss from Taipei, Charles Sun (Justin Chien), who's sent to America to protect his mother (Michelle Yeoh) and younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li) after a cunningly staged attack by an unknown enemy puts his father (Johnny Kou) in the hospital. Mama Sun scarcely needs protection, but the same isn't true of Bruce, a dorky pre-med student who really wants to do improv, and who's totally out of place in his family's world of ultraviolence and organized crime. Meanwhile, Charles' childhood friend Alexis (Highdee Kuan), who's still sweet on him, is now an ambitious assistant DA who sees taking down the triads as a defining career move. Starts off disarmingly light (though always quite violent), but gets significantly darker as it goes on, which really isn't to its credit — after the cheerful amorality of the early episodes, the increasingly maudlin themes of conflicted family loyalty feel heavy-handed, culminating in a credibility-straining climax with about as much subtlety as a cement mixer. It could also have used more Michelle Yeoh and less Sam Li, whose character is such a feckless dweeb that he sometimes grates. Chien actually makes Charles a more credible character than Bruce, impressive considering the level of pulpy plot contrivance involved. A planned second season was canceled, but except for a post-credits tag in the finale, the story feels reasonably complete. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Not so as you'd notice. VERDICT: Starts well, veers too far into turgid melodrama.
PALM ROYALE (2024): Fingernails-on-chalkboard would-be social satire, set in 1969 and featuring Kristen Wiig (with a singularly unconvincing Georgia accent) as conniving but vapid former beauty queen Maxine Simmons, who for some unaccountable reason is determined to wheedle her way into the Palm Beach upper crust, by hook or by crook, while secretly squatting in the mansion of society matron Norma Dellacorte (Carol Burnett), who almost no one realizes is actually in a coma. The glib voiceover narration recalls the early seasons of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, but with no bite and no apparent point — there's no reason to care about the premise, the plot, or any of the characters, who are neither sympathetic enough to be likable nor bitchy enough to be fun. Wiig is just awful, straining to prove she can do the kind of role that in recent years has usually gone to Margot Robbie; she can't, and she's obviously at least 10 years too old for her character. The period production design is suitably glossy, but an interesting supporting cast (including Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Leslie Bibb) is completely defeated by the dreadful scripts, and Ricky Martin (built like a marble statue with acting to match) eventually arrives to stink up the proceedings as Norma's loyal houseboy. I only barely made it through the third episode, and the idea of enduring seven more is too painful to contemplate. If you're in the mood for genteel Southern bitchiness, you'd get more out of a highlight reel of Rue McLanahan scenes from THE GOLDEN GIRLS, which would actually be funny. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Not in the first three episodes. VERDICT: Alternately dull and agonizing.

Heath’s Ultimate Horror Recs; A MASTERPOST.
We’ll start off with my letterboxd top four (in no true order)
1. The Thing (1982)
Tumblr media
First of all, it is unanimously agreed that the only way this movie could have been improved would be if Kurt Russel had worn a crop top that said “baby slut”. This movie has everything and is one of the (if not the original) Imposter movies. It takes place in the arctic, and is a little bit creature, gore, and psychological horror. It’s smart and it's fun! Not too scary, but a good time for sure.
2. Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Tumblr media
Please ignore that Joss Whedon made this as it is, unfortunately, INCREDIBLY fun. Like so much fucking fun. It’s a movie that completely deconstructs horror movie tropes, and I don’t mean that in a pretentious not-like-the-other-movies way. It literally deconstructs them, and has the most ridiculous half-twist at the end that really just ties it all together. If you like final girls, and every possible horror movie villain you could get your hands on, this is the movie for you. If you don’t already know the plot, go in blind.
3. Possession (1981)
Tumblr media
NOBODY, NOBODY, NOBODYYYYYYYY. This movie personifies what it feels like to have a Mitski-induced breakdown. I believe it was banned for a time in much of Europe upon release for going too hard. It’s not really like “demon on the ceiling. gotta call the exorcist” and more like “go stupid go crazy”. Gets More and More as it goes on. Bonus points for Sam Neill, an underrated horror guy. Foreign Film. 10/10.
4. Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Tumblr media
Literally ahead of its time. Girls kiss girls kiss boys kill boys kill girls. Yeah. I’m using the word- it’s camp TO ME. Again, not particularly scary (that’s what the next section is for) but it is very fun and also it is a romantic tragedy. I don’t know what else to say.
SUPER HONORABLE MENTIONS (that might be mentioned in later categories):
Nope (2022)
Candyman (1992)
Alien (1979)
Okay. Now the ones that really got me good (that are rec’able)
1. Hereditary
Tumblr media
Did I like the plot of this movie? No. Did I like this movie? No. Did I leave the theater wanting to crawl out of my skin and throw said skin into the trash with the popcorn? Yes. Rancid vibes, and for that it gets #1. Personally, it hit all my marks for going NOPE. -1000/10. (Really though, I thought the plot was dumb but my god was this movie the literal definition of horrific.)
2. The Descent (2005)
Tumblr media
I watched this movie at FAR too young of an age. I was like 8. My mom showed it to me because she thought it was cool. It made me scared of the dark for the next decade of my life. I’m a bit desensitized to horror at this point so I didn’t find it that scary upon rewatch. However, it’s my favorite combo of creature, proper build up, character-driven, and action-y. Also it’s a literal blood bath. :^)
3. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Tumblr media
This movie is not a classic horror, but it did fill me with immense dread and shock and it has a left a lasting impression on me. You are a girl who gets in a car crash and wakes up in a bunker with John Badman (?) and another guy and he’s telling you the world has ended outside and that if you were to leave you’d immediately die. Except there’s no way to know if he’s telling the truth. I remember my body physically hurting from the stress after watching this for the first time.
4. It (2017)
Tumblr media
I’m not above the clown movie. Listen, was it cosmically horrific? No! But it did have a bunch of good scares and it’s honestly one of my favorite ensemble cast movies to have ever been made. The sequel can die in a dumpster fire though. I still squirm in my seat for a few scenes even though I know Mr. Skarsgard is gonna pop out.
Conceptual Absolute Fuckin’ Bangers ( and/or amazing visuals)
1. A Quiet Place (2018)
Tumblr media
I held my breath the entire movie, and so did the rest of the theater because it pulls you in so well. Bawled my eyes out. Amazing story, and it keeps your nerves frayed the entire time.
2. Candyman (1992)
Tumblr media
My most favoritest slasher. Actually perhaps the only slasher I will recommend. Underhyped, a story less told and it just feels different in a nice way. It has everything, including the Looks.
3. Crimson Peak (2015)
Tumblr media
High drama, and arguably the prettiest visuals I’ve ever seen. Definitely a vibe-based movie and not for everyone. Guillermo Del Toro at his prettiest. I would read the content warnings though, because the plot is also not for everyone.
4. Queen of the Damned (2002)
Tumblr media
I’ll use the word again. Camp. This movie almost made me become a Vampire Person (notorious werewolf person). It’s ridiculous and bad but its also good and a vibe and everyone is very hot so what’s not to love.
5. Nope (2022)
Tumblr media
MY BABY MY BAAAAAAAAAABY MY BAAABBY MY BABBBYYY MY BABY. Zero criticism, it’s just not on my top four horror list because I don’t think it’s a horror. I think its a sci-fi suspense action mystery masterpiece with horror as an undertone. Literally best movie of the decade.
6. Re-Animator (1985)
Tumblr media
Cult classic. And a classic example of they made it so subtext gay that now its just text gay. Ridiculous. Body horror abound. 10/10.
7. Alien (1979)
Tumblr media
Can you say anything bad about this movie? No. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, but it’s very good. And of course the Face Huggers and Chest Bursters can never get enough of their dues for being icons.
8. The Ritual (2017)
Tumblr media
Please just trust me. If you like what Nope did with The Design, you might like this movie. Because ohhhh ohhhh The Design. The first two-thirds I quite enjoy, the last third loses me a bit but then I really like the last scene. But yeah. The Design. Also spooky and fun. And it’s on netflix! Nice!
Here for a fun time, not a smart or “good” time!
1. Pitch Black (2000)
Tumblr media
Yes, I am recc’ing a movie that stars Vin Diesel. I like Riddick. Die mad about it. But I also like this movie a lot! It’s bad in a 2000s sci-fi kinda way. But it commits to what it does and I like the characters. Shoot me. Nice blend of horror and action.
2. Tremors (1990)
Tumblr media
Heath Lore: for like four years in a row I made my friends watch this on my birthday. It’s so very dumb and also so very fun. And. Gay cowboys. Yeehaw. (There are two sequels made prior to like 2008, and I have also watched those. They are even more dumb.)
3. Poltergeist (1982)
Tumblr media
My mom also showed me this movie when I was about 6 or so. Traumatized me for life. I was a little bit paranoid about EVERYTHING. I’m re-watching for the first time in a long time this year, but honestly this movie goes so hard and for what. To be rated PG? That’s how my mom convinced me to watch it.
4. Brain Damage (1988)
Tumblr media
gonna be honest. went full monkey brain during this one. main character...sexy. this concludes my thought process. it’s very dumb and bad, and i would probably read the trigger warnings before you watch it.
5. The Evil Dead (franchise)
Tumblr media
So much happening, I would argue none of it “good”. Fun time.
6. The People Under the Stairs (1991)
Tumblr media
Spoiler alert: there are people under the stairs. A movie where I kept yelling WHAT?! W H A T?! Amazing. 10/10.
Modern Horror Gems (not Oscar Worthy)
1. The Conjuring (2013)
Tumblr media
I really like this movie. It’s not perfect and it’s not innovative, but I think it was well made and I think the scares are good. Also Ed and Lorraine Warren (movie versions, not the real people) are relationship goals for real.
2. Shutter Island (2010)
Tumblr media
There is definitely a lot happening in this movie. Psychological. Story driven. I did like it though.
3. Revenge (2017)
Tumblr media
Action, thriller, horror. Woman stuck with a group of bad men in the middle of the desert. Woman seeks Revenge with a capital R. French film, very violent.
Final category: Movies that make you go Huh?!
1. Titane (2021)
Tumblr media
Such a weird fucking movie. So fucking weird. So fucking weird. French film.
2. Eraserhead
Tumblr media
I discovered my love for brown noise through this movie and fell asleep within thirty minutes. I liked it quite a bit though, I think, when I finished it the next day.
OK THAT’S ALL FOR NOW. THANK YOU FOR READING <3
