note: hey everyone, please be mindful that this is the very first time writing for these characters, i have watched every available episode but i am still reading the manga (though i do have a general idea about the setting and the characters backstories and personalities) so if any characters are ooc to you my apologies, don't be harsh im new here lol. sorry some of them are shorter than others i kind of ran out of ideas when it came to certain characters :p let me know in the comments or reblogs or more preferably in my ask box if you want me to do any other character.

characters: laois, falin, chilchuck, marcille, senshi, namari, shuro, izutsumi (i'm adding her here because feels weird leaving her out when i've added former members of the party, also this is purely sfw so nothing weird will be aimed towards her.)

trigger warnings: nothing out of the ordinary but just read the manga or watch the anime before reading this.

laois touden

reader's crush: when laois finds out that you have a crush on him, his reaction is.. well, how do we put it this way? is he flattered? yes and no, he doesn't see himself as ugly but also doesn't look at himself as the most handsome guy in the world, but someone straight up having a crush on him is kind of new, he doesn't really care much for relationships at the very moment but has thought about settling down with someone he likes, will it be you?

laois' crush: when it comes to having a crush, he tries to be his normal self around you, but sometimes can't help but be a little nervous especially when the two of you are alone, sooner or later he comes to the conclusion of realizing the he indeed, likes you, but confessing is the hard part, he's never thought much about rejection, it is a normal part of life after all, but when it comes to you? it's an entirely different ball game.

falin touden

reader's crush: falin already has someone chasing after her; shuro, theres a 50/50 chance of her reaction to reader's crush being the same as shuro's, but could there be a different reaction this time?

falin's reaction: surprisingly less shy than her brother, when she comes to this conclusion she'll build up the right time to actually confess, not wanting to rush things, just watch out for shuro i guess.

chilchuck tims

reader's crush: chilchuck learning about reader's crush is a bit sad, though he's no stranger to romance as he not only had a wife but also three whole kids, he's not really good with emotions so he's kind of scared you'll leave him just like his wife did, so, if reader confesses, there's gonna be a high chance that you'll be rejected, just give it some time.

chilchuck's crush: this weird feeling in his chest whenever he see's you will confuse him at first.. there's no way he has a crush on you?? after his wife leaving him he didn't really have any interest in romance, he might as well just focus on his work at the moment, one of these days he'll bring up the courage to confess, just not right now.

marcille donato

reader's crush: she can't really decide on whether she'll return the feelings or not, definitely flattered is what i'll say.

marcille's crush: she's similar to falin, she'll build up a better relationship with you for the right time to confess, she tries to make it seem as if she's not into you but it's quite obvious to the other party members.

senshi of izganda

reader's crush: out of everyone, he'll definitely be the most flattered, someone having a crush on him wasn't something he put much thought into, not to mention romance kind of isn't his thing, nor does he think he have the time for a significant other.

senshi's crush: i don't think this is the very first time he's ever had feelings for someone, but it's definitely a special feeling, he's not nervous of confessing his feelings at all actually, and he's not that sensitive to rejection.

namari

reader's crush: namari wouldn't really know how to react, honestly, she's never given the idea of someone having a crush on her much thought, she won't care much about rejecting the reader, at least she's honest.

namari's crush: her crush will be a bit hard to spot but when it comes to you, there will be a notable soft spot, she treats you like everyone else and isn't afraid to scold you if you do something wrong.

shuro | toshiro nakamoto

reader's crush: in an au where he still has feelings for falin, he immediately rejects you, telling you boldly that his heart is for falin and falin alone, but lets go to an au where he either loses interest in her or doesn't like her at all; definitely flattered, someone liking him (back) isn't unheard of but it is... nice?

shuro's crush: just look at what he does with falin, he will propose to you at some point, of course when time goes by and he starts to fall for you harder and harder, until he just can't contain it anymore.

izutsumi

reader's crush: very, very strange, someone having a crush on her is.. almost unheard of, or she doesn't pay much attention, anywho, she doesn't know... how to react? she knows what to do if she doesn't return the feelings but... someone liking her is just weird lmao.

izutsumi's crush: she won't make it obvious.... or try to at least, she accepts affection from you much more than she does from the others and sticks by your side more.

But also like. How was he MEANT to keep it silent? Put a little something in it? I thought since it was a magic bell you could code it to only ring when it's shaken with INTENT?

Oh, it's backstory time.

Okay one: that's fucking tragic, it sounds like the Elves are just forcing the dungeons closed with no regard for how the ecosystem compensates and what people suffer by being in close proximity......

And another thing: Kabru. Kabru, isn't that what YOU'RE after? Having all the power?

Why is this so much like that one meme where the girls at the party are looking at you.

Nevermind the governor not being into this 'good boy, now sign' talk, Toshiro's kinda right. Ya fucked up Kabru.

No matter how far Laios runs, he cannot escape other people trying to tell him how to live his life. Poor guy. But at the same time...

Is this real? Or a red herring?

Laios' father and mother seemed to be living relatively pious lives. They clearly had a good house, but it didn't seem like they were extremely rich. Then again, perhaps he's just a cousin of royalty? Is that why his parents wanted him to have children?

They want to.... halt the growth of the dungeon? Is this another part of the natural ecosystem of things? Dungeons growing seems to point even more towards the idea that it's a gigantic, fleshpit-like creature instead of simply a construct.

Then again, constructs CAN be creatures. Like the golems.

Elves not understanding how old humans are continues to be hilarious because like.

As humans, we HAVE this same concept of variant aging. Like. Dogs. We understand that dogs live less than us, and mature a lot slower. But this is.... COMMON KNOWLEDGE. Most people do not make it into adulthood without understanding that dogs mature within 1-2 years of their birth.

The fact that elves, a species with FAR more time on their hands, who have lived alongside other races for AGES....... have STILL not got the general concept of aging down....means their education is atrocious. Or they're all not paying attention.

.......this. THIS is the most fascinating concept in this chapter.

The fallen.... turned into MONSTERS.

We know that dying inside the dungeon doesn't mean permanent death. But dying above-ground does.

We know that dying in the dungeon doesn't mean your body turns into a monster (aside from ghosts and ghouls?) ..... but dying aboveground.... DOES......?

WHAT'S THE TRUTH.

Hm.

If Kabru and Laios fused, they could almost make one functioning human being.

Senshi just beginning to speak in the middle of his own internal monologue is so real.

...... what's going on there with the expression, buddy?

Bread.......are they STILL carrying around flour with them?! How are they getting bread?!

Also, it's awesome that the eggs are canonically hard to crack, because it makes sense that they don't break during their many fighting events.

Don't tell me Laios, who is sensitive to ghosts has ALSO been seeing things?

Not gonna lie, that's highkey terrifying.

Props to that ghost that's been following Laios around, not ever giving up hope that it can bother him into acknowledging it.

And also - hey, it already saved them once! that means it's probably not evil!

That, or it's the king of the bloody dungeon. Wouldn't that be something!

do you have any favorite ships character wise?

Oh goodness, perhaps i am an odd one out for this but i dont really have any particularly favorite ships. instead i love seeing the fun and possibilities in any and all ships! no matter how odd they may be. I like to imagine situations in the ship and see how it plays out. its good to exercise my creativity as well as making up fun little scenarios. marcille and falin? absolutely adorable and popular for a reason Laios and chilchuck? plenty of fun in the ship. Laios x senshi? amazing monster knowledge and cooking together. marcille x izutsumi? the golden kingdom arc could inspire plenty of fics, add on how they act together anyway and it makes it even better. chilchuck x senshi? another very popular one. Izutsumi x laios? monster lover with a person who only sees themself as a monster? sounds like a setup to some truly adorable fics together. Izutsumi x chilchuck? im sure you could make some fun fics considering they sleep in the same cot chilchuck x namari? two people trying to make a living in the world who enjoy drink coming together.

Shuro x laios? well after this most recent episode you can come up with all kinds of great ideas Leed x chilchuck? well with how well she read him in that episode if there was romantic feelings she would immediately see them. Doesnt really matter which ship too me, i can imagine them all working together and how they could work. I also like thinking this way so that if somebody talks to me about there favorite ship i can encourage it and enjoy it with them. its good fun.

Thoughts upon finishing dungeon meshi? I didn't expect to fall in love with this series and about to reread it all over again cause I know there's tons of details I missed on the first time around

many thoughts... head full...

i was spoiled for a lot of the stuff in the end because that's what happens when you jump headlong into a fandom without finishing the media, but there were some things that took me by surprise, which i was grateful for. i was shielding my partner from spoilers the whole time as well, because they actively upset him and i didn't want any of the stuff i knew to ruin the reveal for him. outside of one thing (laios becoming king), he actually avoided it all!

but, like, on the whole? fuck, man. there aren't many medias i hold in such high regard.

i loved every single character in the entire story. yes, even the ones who sucked; they sucked in compelling and well-written ways. i fell hard for kabru and mithrun, and love them so much, which surprised me. like, i could write essays about kabru, i fucking love the guy. don't let the chilaios posting fool you. but i also fucking adore namari and shuro, who seemed so insignificant in the very beginning. i loved every break we got to see them, or the canaries, or kabru's party.

and our main cast... izutsumi exceeded expectations in every possible way and i can't get enough of her. senshi's backstory was heartbreaking and added a depth to him i hadn't anticipated at all. falin, despite being fridged for the majority of the story, was such an important part of it all that she permeates every inch of the tale, and her survival by the end is an emotionally momentous occasion--and she's so incredible in the moments we get to spend with her!! marcille is so richly complex and amazing to watch, whether she's struggling or dominating the scene, and her love for those close to her is beautiful; we all know she loves falin, but the depths of her affection for the others, especially laios, was amazing.

and, like, you know how i feel about chilchuck and laios. but i will say laios's arc by the end of the manga blew me the fuck away. the things he had to sacrifice to save those he loved... the way he was revealed to hate humanity, yet we know he's always kind? that the people he loves most are humans? the way he did, in the end, accept his role as king, to guide and protect people?

laios doesn't get fixed by the narrative. much like falin, he merely changes, and whether it's for the better or not isn't always clear. but his friends love him, and he's respected, even though the oddities that have been pointed out about him the entire time have gone nowhere. and i think that's fucking incredible.

ryoko kui is a master at showing and not telling. from the small actions characters perform that are never brought up in the text to the things you can trace back through the story as having always been implied, the story remains deep and compelling all the way through, building an entire world and the lives of its characters up as it goes. there was not an inch of this work that wasn't given thought and care.

i loved dungeon meshi from start to finish. nothing i've been into in the past long, long while has been so consistently well done. i'm excited to see what trigger does with it, and what else ryoko kui might do post-canon, and perhaps most of all, where the fandom takes it. it's been such a blast to engage with and i'm so glad i gave it a chance.

Dungeon meshi take breaks in July and another months I don't remenber so yes, next chapter will be in August. Luckily it will probably be the last break as it is very close to ending. How did you like it btw? Any favorite moment, characters, etc?

I really liked it! I wish I'd been keeping up all along instead of doing it all at once, I feel like being present for the community would have been a nice experience, but you can't predict these things, so at this point it's best just to savor the experience that I did have rather than the one I could have had

I'm hoping that keeping up with the anime will reinforce how I feel about it and replicate the sense of community

It was definitely one of the funniest manga I've read in a while, even considering how dark it got. The monsters were cool and cleverly designed, the fights were fun, and the best part to me was that the plot itself wasn't all that complicated, which is something I find a lot of monthly series give me trouble with

My favorite moment was honestly predetermined because I kept seeing "An exact duplicate?! ...An exact duplicate...?" before I got into it, and there's really just no beating that joke

Favorite character is tough...I want to say Namari, cus I like pretty much everything about her from her design to her personality, she just doesn't get to contribute quite enough to the plot to form concrete memories for me to get attached to. Probably an issue that would have been resolved by me reading month-to-month and pining to see more of her over time

Of the major recurring cast, Izutsumi and Kabru definitely give me the most to work with while having designs that I enjoy and clearly defined character arcs. Mithrun's really close too, he's just a bit too...dry for me, I think. Being the only character with an explicit power definitely shot him high up on my list, though

But y'all know that the Chimera had my favorite design. Everybody knows Joey loves ladies with feathers

I'm really excited to see how this story resolves. I get the feeling that this coming chapter isn't the last one, but considering how quickly I burned through the whole series, I'm in a position where it would feel better for it to wrap up sooner than later. Either way, I'm really enjoying that we're getting actual falling action, which is something I see a lot of manga struggle with in general. Most manga in my experience practically end on the climax with maybe one chapter of falling action, often relegated to a bonus chapter that comes out several months later (which is what you often see happen in Jump), so I'm glad that Dungeon Meshi's formula of following up fights with the cast unwinding with food has effectively baked in the falling action for the finale

DunMeshi f/f shipping

I previously made a post about Falin/Marcille but Dungeon Meshi is great for f/f shipping in general! Let's give a look to some other characters and ships!

Namari was a member of our protagonist's adventuring party, who left the group after their big failure at the beginning of the story. But when they meet again and our protagonists are in trouble, it's clear Namari cares a lot for them and she ends up helping them. Her relationship with Marcille is complicated, given their very different personalities. They're a great pair if you enjoy dwarf/elf romances, bickering and opposites attract tropes.

Namari’s new party involves Kiki, an orphan with a twin brother who were both adopted by gnomes. Kiki has an easy-going and mellow personality. We don’t get that much content about her but there’s still some neat shippy material related to Namari. Plus, they both have great character designs and what we see of their personalities seem like it could mesh well together. They also both have complicated family backstories.

Little is known of Namari’s relationship to Falin, outside of the fact they’ve been in the same adventuring party for a few years, but that shouldn’t stop people from having fun in trying to tackle it as a ship, I think it could be interesting.

The Ninja Crew

A group of warriors retainers that followed their lord in the dungeon, in order to help him. Maizuru is the oldest, a powerful magic user that was in charge of training the other ones. She’s quite overbearing in her care for her master but can also be cold and calculating, being an experienced ninja. Those who like f/f involving older women may enjoy her character! Hien and Benichidori are quite close to each other, though they don’t appear much in the main story so the informations around them are limited.

Izutsumi is the member of this group we get to see the most, since she ends up being involved with the main characters. First by attacking Marcille and threatening to kill her if she doesn’t remove a spell put on her. A great start for shipping, in my personal opinion! Their relationship will evolve to that of teammates and a good amount of Izutsumi’s character development is connected to her relationship with Marcille.

She also shares some nice flashbacks moment with (Inu)Tade, an optimistic and good-hearted ogre, basically Izutsumi’s opposite in personality, but someone who still enjoys hanging out with her and wants the best for her. Tade’s the one of the group Izutsumi got along with the best, though there was also an opportunistic aspect to that, as Tade’s kindness was something easy to take advantage off. Digging into their shared past or possible futures would be very interesting.

The Canaries

The elves from the West have a special force tasked with taking care of dangerous dungeons. It is composed of guards from noble houses and prisoners working to pay for their crimes. They’re an antagonistic group to the heroes, though they have their own complicated morals and reasons to act that way. 4 of the members of the main Canary party that we encounter are women.

Pattadol is a guard who’s new at the job, quite naive and stuck-up, a stickler to the rules and the importance of social classes. Because of that, she gets on the nerves of the prisoners, like Fleki the drug addict with a sharp tongue, who’ll talk back and mock her, or Cithis the shrewd illusionist, who consider the idea of killing her. They have obviously quite messed-up relationships, ideal for some dark and twisted takes. Especially given Cithis’ illusionary powers, which have some mind-control element to them, and she clearly enjoys using them.

And there’s also Otta, who has a rather butch look for an elf and is revealed in the Dungeon Meshi Guidebook to be into women! Specifically, she has a thing for those from the short-lived half-foot race, who have an average lifespan of fifty years. Which some of her comrades are baffled by.

Another important female elf and former Canary is Milthril. A gloomy older woman who used to be one of the top forces amongst the Canaries but decided to resign because of her distaste for other elves. On the other hand she is quite... fascinated by the other races.

I may kinda be crackshipping her with Maizuru, because I could see them having an interesting encounter, what with them being two dangerous “mother figures”. Imagine them having to face each other to protect their charges or work together to save them!

That’s it for most of the important female characters. There are some others I could mention but that’d make for an even longer post. I’d be very interested to hear about people’s various f/f ships for the series!

Favorite character: the obvious answer is izutsumi, but I also really like chilchack, kabru, and misurn. just like,,, not as much as izutsumi lol

Least Favorite character: there aren’t really any characters I absolutely hate, but if I really had to pick, I’d probably say mr. tance. he’s just super crotchety and doesn’t really respect namari and the rest of his retainers much at all. also toshiro/sureau and most of his party come off as pretty unlikable.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): izutsumi/marcille, farlyn/marcille, laius/kabru, I think there might be something in kabru/misurn and marcille/misurn too but I haven’t really thought about it further.

Character I find most attractive: basically all of the canaries are pretty hot. I think I unironically have marcille’s sense of taste lol. it’s not really the same thing, but izutsumi is another one of those characters that’s attractive in a way that I’d want to project onto them in a story or whatever

Character I would marry: marcille or farlyn probably, maybe kabru if he transitioned

Character I would be best friends with: honestly most of the cast. chilchack seems like he’d be fun to go drinking with, and the thorden siblings seem like people I’d run into in a d&d group or online game lobby and immediately get sucked into their social circle forever

a random thought: I put all the touhou shit in my fanfic kind of as a joke originally, but after reading forbidden scrollery I feel like there’s actually a good bit of thematic overlap about like, the border between the human and the monstrous and symbiotic relationships between the two and stuff. also reimu would make a great canary.

An unpopular opinion: I think my “every elf is genderqueer” headcanon post is unpopular with straight fans lol, but outside of that corner of the fandom I guess maybe “senshi and farlyn are both kinda boring as-is and need more development” would do as a more generally unpopular opinion

my canon OTP: again, idk what the threshold for canonicity is, but marcille/farlyn is basically a reading comprehension exercise so I’m gonna go with that

Non-canon OTP: desperately hoping izutsumi/marcille graduates to canon at some point

most badass character: hard to say, there’s so many characters that are just super cool. misurn telefragging people owns, kabru’s party kicks ass when they actually get to fight stuff and don’t get instantly tpk’d, marcille is pretty badass during the resurrection scene and when she kills the griffon basically single-handedly, izutsumi taking on all the succubi by herself was awesome... I could go on. basically every character has gotten a couple scenes where they really get to shine and I love it.

pairing I am not a fan of: laius/marcille. arguably laius’ succubus implies that he’s into her, but I really just don’t see anything deeper than that tbh. not that they aren’t friends obviously, it just feels really forced to interpret that as romantic.

character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): there hasn’t been anyone yet where like, their characterization just veers off in a stupid direction or anything, but like I mentioned already, I feel like senshi kinda ran out of stuff to do around when they got to the water level with the exception of the griffon arc, and farlyn still needs more characterization imo

favourite friendship: just generally laius’ party seem to get along really well and I love the dynamic they have

character I want to adopt or be adopted by: I think basically everyone except chilchack is about my age (or equivalent) give or take maybe 5 years so it’s hard to say. maybe the thorden siblings as kids? a lot of laius’ flashbacks about how they grew up seems pretty dismal, especially how farlyn was shunned and stuff
