Hello there and welcome to my first time rambling about my thoughts on Monkie Kid's Season 4 Special. Now if you haven't seen the special then please scoll away. Or don't, I can't stop you.

After hearing the news of MK S4S dubbed, I hopped in and watched it. It was tempting to resist because the Special had already released in Chinese but it was worth the watch. So it's time to show my random thoughts of the special down below.

Again, SPOILERS FOR THE SPECIAL!

{Oh snap, the sky is falling apart. Not good, Azure…}

{Poor Nezha, being the one who's injured the most. I hope we get a relaxing episode of him in the future again. But dang, how Tang and Sandy fixes the scoll is the most dumbest but relatable thing they did together.}

{"Can't believe I'm sticking out for Wukong, again." I can, Macaque.}

{IT'S THE MONKEY KING BOYS! HE CHATTERS!}

{OH MY GOD THAT OUTFIT! I can't decide if I should cringe in agony or laugh in joy when seeing Wukong trying to communicate with humans!}

{THEY FOUND THE THIRD BABY MONKEY IMMEDIATELY.}

{OH! More backstory!}

{Oh…more backstory…Well, honestly I didn't expect to see Macaque to be able to interact with Wukong.}

{Geez, that whole argument is an intense mess. It's like a lot of their feelings that were build up from before had brought out the worst of what's intended. Wukong seems like he expected a chance of escape and Macaque wanted to console the guy. But of course, of the situation at hand, neither of them get what they wanted from each other.}

{Also, THE FOURTH MONKEY! THEY'RE ALL OKAY!}

{OH! THE OTHER PILGRIMS! It's great to see them again! Although, only for a small moment…}

{We all want to know about them too, MK. But not everything has to be explained. Sometimes the past is sensitive to talk about. Like everything else around him, they're not MK.}

{Man, you look exhausted there, Wukong. Like mentally exhausted.}

{THAT WHOLE MOMENT IS BEAUTIFUL. MK saying words to motivate Wukong and Macaque being there to affirm them. Two people that are important to him just as much to them.}

{THE BROTHERHOOD!}

{Awe, Azure. To see him suffering because of what he has seen has taken him in the deep end. I will agree that the Celestials are powerful but careless beings that only act when they think are needed, but now that we see the Jade Emperor and how much of an impact he has maintaining the world is very prominent. I don't know how complicated he was able to deal with that but seeing how Azure isn't doing it well, it shows.}

{Pfft, monkey class. Of course, they have to be in Wukong's house, but I want to see how they led up to that scene.}

{HA I LOVE WUKONG AND NEZHA'S BANTERS! ALSO, FRICKEN CRAYONS!}

{MACAQUE JUMPSCARE! Anyways, the planning they have for each of the Camel Ridge crew sounds plausible. A bit more explanation on how to deal with them would be nice to know.}

{NEZHA I LOVE YOU BUT PLEASE STOP GETTING HURT!}

{MK'S TURN TO DRAW! Huh, I should've just kept watching on their planning.}

{LOVE MK'S LITTLE DOODLES! Also, they're getting into details, but I'm guessing there's still more to work out on.}

{Okay, it's sweet that Yellowtusk is worried about Azure's stability and interesting to hear how confident Peng believes in Azure's powers, but for them to fight in a place that reminds me the time they once dine happily together makes me concerned for them all. Of course, Azure comes in.}

{Ooh. A glimpse of Wukong trying to console MK about his origin's powers. It going good until the plot progress itself...}

{PIGSY, TANG, AND SANDY AGAINST YELLOWTUSK! But it's more therapeutic than a fight.}

{Cute, MK hugging Wukong to never let him go again. ONLY TO BE PUT THEM INTO MORE TROUBLE.}

{Inky! And with the images of PIF, DBK, LBD, and Nezha(?) too~}

{"Well, one monkey and one unconfirm, but yeah I'd be embarrass for sure." Oh boy, the writers knows what they're teasing with on that line.}

{Oh dang, that's cool! Wukong holding his staff like a bazooka to expand it and Azure holding it off like a champ. THEN MK WOOSHED UP TO TAKE A STEP FURTHER ON THE STAFF!}

{MONKEY BUDDIES DOING THEIR BEHALF! THEY'RE SO CUTE!}

{AND THERE'S MONKEY MECH!}

{"I hate monkeys." Azure is such a joker.}

{OH! A flashback to Mei's plans!}

{HAHA! I love how witty Mei explains the stuff. It shows how she's improving from the last time they struggle against with LBD's battle.}

{NO THE MONKEY BABIES! NO MK!}

{Awe, Azure. He's so conflicted when he feels up against Wukong and MK. Especially on Wukong because of how high he used to respect Wukong's words back then until it crumbles after being sealed for over hundreds of years with no one to help him.}

{……Monkey MK.}

{The size and power comparison between Azure and MK during their fights are fun.}

{Azure? Lion baby? You're breaking.}

{Oof, MK giving him the "reasons you suck" speech. Also, MK'S MONKEY MONSTER!? THIS SHOW IS WILD.}

{Ugh, poor Azure. The universe is breaking…}

{A Peng insult. Of course, Peng doesn't want to let that slide, but OH MAN THE SMOKE MONSTER AND MEI'S DRAGON LOOKS SO COOL! I wonder if we would get to see Peng again.}

{Oooh~ Positivity is rubbing off on Yellowtusk. It's sweet to see him returning the weapons to Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy. AND THEY GET TO WEAR THEIR OUTFITS!}

{And the hero team is back. Only to see Azure struggling to keep everything together.}

{"How are you here?" And that's one way how the series foreshadows Seasons 5.}

{Seeing Azure realizing his mistakes really pulls my heartstrings. The guys wants to see everything going well in his own way. He knew his risks but it seems like he didn't think it through. A person blinded by his past has brought him more pain than he ever thought. Just…let me hug the cat please.}

{Azure disintegrating…rest in peace.}

{Oh sweet, Nezha is here. Where was he? Neverminded that, at least he's able to maintain the Emperor's powers. For now…}

{Man, those chains around the world are sooo ominous. It's sweet to see that everyone are doing their best to bring it all together.}

{DADSY! TANGY! SANDY BABY! MEI BUDDY! I love how they check on MK first after fighting the most difficult part of their plan!}

{Nezha being a trooper to deal the other half of the situation. Releasing the beings in the scroll, jailing Yellowtusk, containing the Emperor power, and more…I feel bad for the guy…}

{"So long as we leave the world in better shape than we found it, then it's all good, right?" I wish it is, MK.}

{THE BEACH!}

{It's so cute that they include DBK and his family. Like, they missed the majority of this season but THEY'RE HERE!}

{MK putting on sunscreen is fun, even his chat with Wukong is rather light-hearted.}

{Ah, the part that everyone determines is for fanservice: Shadowpeach in DBZ's outfits.}

{An interesting way to end when this will just remind all the Monkie Kid Fans that the perpetrator is out there.}

{And there he is.}

OVERALL!

{The Special did a great job hyping the ending of the season. I was happy to see Wukong's and Macaque's backstory more, understanding the Brotherhood's concerns for each other, and the heroes trying to clean up the mess as much as they can. This balance well with the intense moments and their fighting scenes. But as much as I love most parts of the episode's, there's some that are off to me. I found some of odd choice of voice recording in the show, like Past Macaque's rejecting Past Wukong's help on his scarf and the intensity of MK's voice when he went Monkey Mode. Of course, there's also some parts that ends in plot holes, like where the heck is Peng going!? Is Monkey MK a good thing or a bad thing!? And who freed Azure Lion!? There's those and my bias on seeing much of the Special on a first impression but I still hope to watch more of that being explained. I might watch it again just to see anything else I might've not caught on. In the end, the Season 4's Special feels deserved and I hope we get a time to watch Season 5.

Snakes have gotten something of a bad rap over the past few thousand years. What with that one snake tricking that nice lady into eating an apple way back when, thus condemning the entire human race to mortality, snakes have been mistrusted if not flat-out feared.

And while it is understandable that people may fear an animal that can easily kill them, we think these fascinating, diverse creatures that range from several inches to 30 feet long, and from friendly and docile to aggressive and deadly, deserve for people to find out more about them.

Learn about World Snake Day

World Snake Day is an important day when it comes to increasing awareness about the different species of snake all around the world. Snakes tend to have a negative connotation. A lot of people are scared of snakes, and of course, we can definitely understand the reasons why! No one likes the thought of being gobbled up by a snake, do they? Plus, when someone is two-faced or a bad person, they are often referred to as snakes. However, snakes are great creatures and they are so important to the world that we live in.

Did you know that there are more than 3,5000 species of a snake around the world? Because of this, it is not going to be a challenge for you to find a snake that fascinates you and interests you that you may not have heard of before, even if you are someone who is interested in snakes and you have a pet snake of your own! So, this is one of the good reasons why to research snakes and learn more about them on this date. After all, there is so much that you can learn!

Of the 3,500 species of a snake around the world, there are only around 600 that are venomous. This is less than 25 percent of snakes! There are only 200 species of snake that pose a considerable risk to human life as well. Therefore, snakes are nowhere near as worrying or scary as we think they are. Of course, this does not mean that you should go up and start petting any snake that you come across! However, it is definitely something to think about. Perhaps we give these animals a much harder time than they deserve?

History of World Snake Day

The snake is one of the oldest mythological characters and has been revered by civilizations the world over. There are about 3,458 species of snakes known so far, ranging from the semi-frozen tundra of northern Canada to the steamy jungles of the equator and most of the world’s oceans. Snakes are highly effective predators and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature in each of these realms. Snakes are also fascinating in that they have a prehistoric lineage, thus giving us a glimpse back to a prehistoric time when the earth was ruled by reptiles—many people have no idea that modern reptiles are literally the living, breathing cousins of dinosaurs.

The species that seem to fascinate people the most are the King Cobra, the largest venomous snake in the world most people have seen in movies being coaxed out of a basket by a snake charmer; the Rattlesnake, that has forced countless people to suck its poison out of the bite before it’s too late; and the Reticulated Python, the world’s longest snake that kills its prey by strangling it.

World Snake Day was created to help people learn more about these animals and how much they contribute to the world as we know it.

How to celebrate World Snake Day

Have you ever thought about having a pet snake? Snakes may not be the right pet for everyone, but if you have it in you to take on the challenge it is to own and care for a pet snake, World Snake Day may be the time to make that decision. If not, however, you can take advantage of this day to learn some more about these incredible animals. Here are some interesting facts to help you do that:

Where do snakes live?

Snakes are found in every continent except Antarctica in the sea, forests, deserts, prairies, and even your backyard or garage.

What do snakes eat?

Snakes consume many different animals including insects small rodents and frogs. Snakes eat their prey whole because their lower jaw can separate from the upper jaw. Very large snakes can even eat small deer, pigs, monkeys, and even primates.

How do snakes behave?

Snakes rely on the environment to regulate their body temperature. They spend as long in the warm sun as they need to in order to get warm, and when they become too warm, they find shade to cool off. They are generally not aggressive unless they are hunting or feel like they need to defend themselves. They shed their skin three to six times a year.

How do they defend themselves?

Snakes use a variety of techniques defend themselves, including camouflage, biting and envenoming those they feel are threatening them. Sometimes they simply curl up in a tight ball to hopefully avoid being seen.

Why are some snakes endangered?

Fortunately, snakes are not widely hunted, but their numbers are still declining due to deforestation and climate change causing the deterioration of their habitats and a declining amount of available prey.

As mentioned earlier, there are many different species of snakes, and so you can spend some time learning about them and their various qualities and features. For example, the Barbados thread snake is the smallest snake in the world. This serpent is actually smaller than a nightcrawler, coming in at only approximately four inches. In terms of the heaviest snake, this honor goes to the green anaconda. The reticulated python is the longest snake in the world. If you spend some time doing a bit of reading, we are sure that you will be fascinated with the results.

You could also spend some time watching films that are based on snakes. There are a lot of different films whereby snakes play a big role. This includes Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Snakes on a Plane, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Of course, the most famous snake film is Anaconda. There are a lot of great deaths that have occurred in cinema at the hand of snakes, but this is definitely the greatest. If you have not seen this film before, now is the perfect time for you to watch it!

Summary: After losing the throne to his brother Orm is working with Arthur to try to help Atlantis move forward. A few months after this Elara, part of an ancient order of prescient Atlanteans known as Tidewatchers, has a vision of Orm's death. Predicting and reading the future through the tides of fate has never been easy but Elara is in for the challenge of a lifetime working with her former king to save his life.

How do you feel about going on a quest?” She asked with a mischievous smile that was so startling and welcome all at once.

He wanted to know what she had seen but this turn about in her was just so sudden, he wasn’t ready to leap in blind. “What kind of quest?”

Elara looked back to the TV then back at Orm, determination and cautious excitement in her eyes, “We’re going to find the Lost Kingdom.”

“The Lost Kingdom?” he repeated.

“Yes,” she said as if it was simple.

“The Lost Kingdom that has been missing for thousands of years. That lost kingdom?” He asked, wanting to be positive he’d heard her right.

“No, the lost kingdom of the monkey men,” she said sarcastically then clarified. “Of course that Lost Kingdom.”

“They’re dead, Elara.” He was stupefied at her idea of a quest. “They have never been found because there is nothing left to find.”

“I don’t think so,” She said as if she hadn’t just started talking crazy.

“Did the tides tell you? Is that where you’re getting this from?” he asked like he didn’t already know the answer.

“Of course they did.”

“So the ocean tells you to go looking for a dead civilization and you just jump?”

“I do when they tell me like this.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Said the man who is on the surface because the ocean told me you were in danger. You had no problem believing the ocean then.”

“That’s because that’s more tangible. There are plenty of people down there who’d have reason to want me dead. There is nothing like that to back the idea that the Lost Kingdom is still alive and kicking and just ignoring us for millenia. It’s not like they wouldn’t know where to find us.”

“But I think they are still alive,” she argued. “And I’m not the only tidewatcher to think so.”

He fixed her with a stare. “If tidewatchers had sensed them before why didn’t they tell anyone?”

“They did,” Elara answered as she settled into a debate. “Tidewatchers have been seeing patterns about the lost kingdom since they disappeared. For the first thousand or so years we told the king, his council, and anyone else who would listen.”

Even as a former king, this was news to him. “Did everyone just ignore them, then?”

“No. Expeditions were launched for the first several hundred years, sometimes led by kings, nobles, scientists and researchers.” Elara sighed. “But none of them ever found the Lost Kingdom and eventually people stopped believing us. They blamed the Tidewatchers for getting their hopes up and claimed we were just wasting everyone’s time. So we stopped saying anything even though we still get hints and ripples from time to time.”

“What makes you think we have even a chance to succeed where generations of Atlanteans have failed?”

“I don’t know that we’ll succeed,” Elara said without a hint of shame. “We very well could be just as unsuccessful as everyone else that has come before us.”

Orm tried not to be annoyed by her sudden confidence but he just couldn’t feel any trace of it.

“Then why try?”

Elara considered her answer very carefully before speaking. “Because isn’t it better to try something and fail than to do nothing? You were a king who used to have hundreds of duties to perform each day. I know you’re miserable up here. I know that being so idle chafes at you and I get it. I’m restless too. I hate feeling so aimless. So let’s do something. I’d rather try to do something that is very likely to fail than just sit around feeling useless. Wouldn’t you?”

He stared at her, mesmerized. How was she able to read him so easily? How could she see straight to his core as she did?

He didn’t say that though, settling instead for, “Of course I would.”

“Then why not this?” She said vibrating with energy. “Why not look for the Lost Kingdom? If we succeed it could do so much to help your image with the tribes of Atlantis. And, even if we fail, at least we did something with our time up here.”

It really was maddening to try to argue with her when she was like this. She knew what she was proposing was insane but also knew exactly how to tantalize him into agreeing, or barring that, scolding him. He secretly loved seeing her like this. Her confidence had always been one of her most attractive features and it was welcome change to the tension and timidness of the morning.

They very likely would be chasing ghosts but it was better than nothing and Orm had always loved a challenge.

He smiled and repeated, “Why not this.”

A brilliant smile lit up Elara’s face, “And besides, if we find nothing, we can always work in some more time for sulking.”

Orm couldn’t help the small chuckle that escaped him at that. Their eyes met at that and he couldn’t help but think that he’d do far more to keep her smiling at him like that.

They spent the next hour or so plotting while Elara did her best to wring tangibility out of the hints and ripples the tides had presented to her. Most of what she saw was just glimpses and feelings though. It was like waking from a dream with just enough images and sensations to verify it had happened but not enough substance to put into words.

It felt very much like having an incomplete puzzle and yet Elara was undeterred. She was convinced that if she put enough pieces together then more would be revealed. All they needed to do was to connect the edge pieces and they would have a place to start.

They were still sitting on the couch together and occasionally that fact would send an awkward or excited thrill through her but it was easier for her to manage those if she has a goal to direct her energy to.

“Was there any location in these patterns you saw?” He asked after she’d tried to give him a run-down of what the tides had given her.

Elara’s face screwed up in concentration, “I know I saw something, somewhere but there are so many images and abstract sensations that I’m having a harder time parsing it all out.”

“What do you need to do?” He asked. What he’d learned in ruling and fighting was that, no matter how difficult things could get there was always a method, a technique that could make things more manageable. They just needed to find one for sifting through a complex tide pattern.

Elara couldn’t help but wring her hands together. “I know I need to just relax and concentrate but there’s just so much more to this web than I’m used to. This pattern is ancient and complex and I don’t even know where to begin.”

Orm knew very little about her craft but he had an idea about at least one problem she brought up.

“Sit back,” He said in a way that wasn’t a suggestion. He just had a voice that was more accustomed to commanding.

She shot him a look that very clearly said ‘Excuse me?’

Orm sighed, motioning to her, “You said you need to relax, I’m trying to help you. You’re all hunched and tense. Posture is important for preparing the body and the mind for a task.”

Okay so he made a certain kind of sense but Elara also knew she couldn’t tell him how very difficult it would be for her to truly relax, especially next to him with his intense eyes fixed on her. Arguing with him would have the opposite desired effect though so she made a show at scooting back so her back was pressed against the back of the couch.

He sent her a dubious and slightly teasing look. “Do you even know how to relax? You look like you’re about to be bludgeoned by something.”

She laughed, “You’re one to talk, when was the last time you relaxed?”

Instead of laughing back, he looked away. The last time he’d relaxed was when they’d kissed.

“Okay, we both have work to do in that area,” he assented. “Here, I’ll do it with you.”

She raised her eyebrows at that. Yeah, she’d believe that when she saw it. And yet, there he was, making a big show about sitting back next to her and closing his eyes. She tried to adjust her back but couldn’t help but peek at him, more entertained than she should be by him playing along with her.

Eyes still closed, Orm said calmly, “This works best if your eyes are closed too.”

Elara started and instantly closed her eyes. How did he know? Some small childish part of her wanted to open her eyes and stick her tongue out at him but it was a foolish notion she managed to repress. He was trying to help after all, even if he still managed to exude such a deep commanding smugness. But given his idle restlessness of late, it was almost a refreshing change. Almost.

“What is it we’re meant to be doing that we can’t do with our eyes open?”

“Focusing,” He said cryptically.

While Elara was skilled with the tides, patience had never been her strongest suit and focus was particularly elusive given how overstimulated she was by this whole pattern of possibilities. She felt like a kid in a candy store, and it was nearly impossible to calm enough to focus on any one thing. She didn’t want to be petulant or anything but it’s not like Orm had a web of whispers dancing around in his head to contend with.

So after a minute of silence in which she barely managed to keep from bouncing in her seat, she finally said, “Focusing on what?”

She could almost hear him smiling in amusement as he said, “What do you normally focus on when you’re reading the tides?”

Elara let out a breath, “Normally? I just listen until the image becomes clearer but that’s when I’m trying to make out a single image, not a whole milenia of hints. There’s too much and it’s all out of focus.”

Elara had begun fidgeting with the edge of the couch as she rambled. Of course she didn’t realize that until she felt his hand cover hers. All of her stilled at the contact.

“You know that won’t help you focus on anything.” He said quietly but confidently.

Considering how he’d been at a disadvantage the last week or so, it was interesting to see the tables turned and have the confident tidewatcher suddenly so anxious.

It took everything in Elara not to tell him point blank that physical contact with him wouldn’t help any kind of focus but he moved his hand away before she could muster up any reply of the sort.

“Sorry,” she muttered, though not sure what she was sorry for.

“It’s alright,” he said, “Just relax.”

Again, easier said than done. But try as she might, none of the old tidewatcher tricks were working. She was alight with energy and portents and didn’t know how to quiet any of it enough to parse anything out.

Almost as if he could feel the tension still radiating off of her, Orm tried another tack, “Just breathe, and focus on your breaths.”

She tried. She honestly did, but suddenly something so natural felt detached from her somehow and she didn’t know if this was how she normally breathed or not. It seemed too forced and Elara felt completely overwhelmed at the fact that she couldn’t even breathe normal. She just needed to focus, but maybe she couldn’t focus on herself, she just needed to focus on anything.

Casting about, she could hear Orm breathing beside her. Unlike her, he was calm and steady. His breathing unhurried and unlabored. It was a calming sound, like the waves of the ocean lapping at the shore. It was simple and sure. So she focused on that, on his even breathing to guide her to even out her own. And slowly, slowly, her breathing fell into step with his, her body calming as she put away everything but their breaths like the tides of the ocean.

And, just listening to him, she saw a gradual image floating to the surface in her mind’s eye. An ancient temple that Elara had seen before swam in her head. It was old but not as old as Atlantis, and not of Atlantean design but it had the ripple of the Lost about it. Where had she seen it? She kept her breathing even, focusing on Orm beside her as an anchor.

Now the temple was….Mayan? That sounded right? Where had she heard it? A book. A book from Madren’s library about human civilizations. They’d laughed because Atlantis had been mentioned as a fallen civilization and a myth in the same text.

Where was it? Mexico? That felt right. They were close to Mexico, just in the country to the north of it, it wouldn’t even be far. This wasn’t the answer but it was a clue, a breadcrumb on their trail.

Elara’s eyes popped open and when she turned to look at Orm, she found his ocean blue eyes looking at her.

“You saw something didn’t you?” He asked, with a satisfied smirk.

She wanted to tease him for his cockiness but she was too excited, “I did. Thank you.”

“So where to?” He asked, fascinated.

“Mexico, our first clue is in Mexico.” She said, full of confidence and enthusiasm.

Orm just blinked, “I presume you know where that is.”

She laughed. “Yes. We leave tonight!”

With a direction in mind, it was much easier to move forward. While Elara had a number of false identification papers for herself, she didn’t think what they had on hand would be enough to get Orm across the border. She’d learned from her travels that surface dwellers could get very territorial about different stretches of land that required all manner of documentation.

After a discussion of problem at hand, they decided the best course of action was to simply slip in the gulf for a brief stint and then pop back up on the other side of the border. Of course their idea of a brief stint of a couple hours would have taken days and intense endurance for any surface dweller.

All that was left really, after consulting maps and the internet for the exact location of the site, she’d learned it was in fact called Tulum and pretty much across the gulf from where they were. Elara concerned herself with the planning while Orm took charge in preparing. He’d gotten a decent enough grasp on what foods took prepping and what he liked so it was easy enough for him to pack what they would need once Elara told him how to package things for travel.

It should have disturbed Elara how seamlessly they worked in tandem like this. The fact that they worked well tackling their own tasks and yet coming together with little fuss. And yet it comforted her. This whole situation was still nearly absurd to her and yet, it helped to have someone else to rely on and work with, to have someone listen to her. She had hear Madren say that necessity makes for strange bedfellows.

And given how awkward things had been after their eventful night of drinking, she was worried that their whole stint on the surface would be plagued with the same fraught tension. But, apparently, avoiding the matter entirely and diving into a completely different task was the answer to their problems. She and Orm were both creatures of purpose and habit and clearly functioned much better with a course of action rather than free time.

Even if the quest was just a magical goose chase, it would be better to be out doing anything than twiddling their thumbs in seclusion.

Between the two of them, they were ready for departure in an hour. Elara took the time to leave a note of thanks to their absent host. Elara may have never met the Diana who owned the cottage they’d taken refuge in but it had been kind of the woman to open her doors even of a spare house to people she had never met.

And then suddenly, they were both standing at the door with their Atlantean waterproof bags packed and they were ready. Without speaking they both turned back to look around the little cottage that had been their refuge for their first week on the surface. It hadn’t been a particularly happy week but it hadn’t been entirely miserable either. Elara felt her eyes lingering on the couch -she definitely had an almost fondness for that couch- before looking back to Orm beside her.

His expression was unreadable, she didn’t know what he saw as he looked over the living area they’d occupied together but there was an effect on him, she could feel that much, even if she didn’t know what it was.

As if his appraisal was done, he looked back to her, motioning to the door neither one had reached for, “Shall we?”

“We shall,” she said, trying to keep that confidence from earlier in her even as the nerves she felt for the unknown jangled in her gut.

And, as they’d come to this little house on this small inlet of a beach, Orm and Elara silently left it behind them and returned to the sea, even if just for a small journey, and into the nearly unknown.

Elara looked to Orm, still surprised at how everything was turning out, he looked to her and saw some question in her eyes and nodded in reassurance and then they were beneath the waves, surging against the tides into the gulf beyond.

Ever since I learned how to travel without parental supervision, I've made traveling an answer and an excuse to almost anything- from de-stressing to celebrating and even to reconnecting with friends. How else do you reconnect with a fellow mermaid, though? How else do you reconnect with a very close friend who hates Elyu for all the heartaches that took place there? Well, bring her to La Union and make her fall in love with it. That's exactly what I did.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

DAY 1

7:00 AM - Boarded a bus from Imus, Cavite to Cubao 9:00 AM - Meet-up at Partas Cubao Terminal 10:00 AM - Travel from Cubao to La Union 5:00 PM - ETA at Urbiztondo; checked in at Circle Hostel 5:30 PM - Watched the sunset, swimming and photo ops at the beach 6:00 PM - Dinner at Urbiztondo Food Hub 7:00 PM - Went back to Circle Hostel, took a bath, charged our phones 8:00 PM - Drinking game at Circle Hostel 10:00 PM - Partying at Flotsam Jetsam

You may want to do tours, but since we've been in Elyu before and I was itching to surf, we weren't able to explore the typical tourist attractions around San Juan. We could have visited Macho temple, just meters away from Partas Terminal in San Fernando, but we were too tired to do so. There's just way too many happenings in San Juan that we couldn't squeeze into our schedule the tours we should have taken. Those moments were left for rest and talking since it takes a lot of energy to surf and chika the day away with a close friend.

If you add up only the important items in a trip (transportation, food, accommodation and an activity special to that place), you'll do good with a budget of P3, 200, but you always have to consider the places you will have to explore, the food you will be eating, and you also need to consider mishaps along the way so allowing buffer budget is imperative especially when you are having a trip to a fast-growing tourist spot like Elyu.

I'll be honest with you guys, I spent P6, 000 for 3 days and 2 nights in Elyu mostly because I splurged on food and souvenirs. Not to mention we visited Elyu on a weekend and I had 2 surfing lessons. Also, unlike some surfing schools in Baler, the one we took at Elyu doesn't offer free printed photos of you surfing so we had to shell out P200 for that. Since the whole barangay of Urbiztondo is swarmed by restaurants, cafés, resorts, and bars, it is so hard not to try things out. I've been here 4 years ago and a lot has changed, including places to check out, but you can still do well with P4, 000 if you don't spend too much.

HOW TO GET THERE

Primary route: Partas Transportation Co., Inc. Cubao Terminal / Pasay Terminal- San Juan, La Union (Sebay) bound > drop off at Urbiztondo/Sebay

Alternate route 1: Board any bus bound for Vigan, Laoag or Abra and make sure to tell the conductor to drop you off at Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union.

Alternate route 2: Board a bus bound for San Fernando, La Union > Board a jeepney bound for San Juan > drop off at Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union.

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at Circle Hostel and I have to admit, I wouldn't have it any other way. I stayed at the same place 4 years ago and I booked my reservation this year with them again. There's just something charming in the way Circle Hostel is managed.

Like I said, Elyu is a fast-growing tourist spot. Just walk around Urbiztondo and you'll catch a glimpse of how many options you have for lodging.

POINTS OF INTEREST:

We visited Elyu to surf and basically to eat, so we weren't really able to check out the other attractions La Union has to offer. Actually, there are only a few points of interests in San Juan which includes surfing and trekking to Kaikanan Falls. The rest that you'd typically see online are attractions near San Juan which I'll discuss in a separate post.

I've been getting surf lessons, but I'm still not confident in catching my own wave so I had to get an instructor. We got ours from Elyu Classic.

WHERE TO EAT

Every nook of San Juan offers a food place. They are all a few steps away from each other, but I'm going to list below those I’ve tried so far.

Food Hub

This is by far my favorite among the many choices in Elyu. Why? Because they offer options that are both affordable and delicious. Sulit at its best! Though the food may take a while- there are only a few employees around. We've always ordered Sinigang na Hipon and Sinigang na Bagnet. They usually run out of Bagnet, though, so it’s best to try that in the morning. You should also try their Sisig Longganisa.

SeaNymph Surf Cafe Resort

If you'd like to eat, drink and chill by the beach, SeaNymph is a strong option. We loved their pancake and breakfast list. This is also where we got our photos printed since below this surf cafe is Elyu Classic's stall.

The Coffee Library

It's a small cafe that offers a chic instagrammable interior. I'm very much into coffee and tea so for me, their treats are a little too sweet and average for my liking. But hey, taste is subjective, so I'd say try it for yourself. What I did love was their turon. If you’re going to visit Elyu, order turon at The Coffee Library.

Beach Bum Food Park

Along Urbiztondo Highway is a Food Park which didn't exist 4 years ago so we checked that one out. They've got so many options! We may have chosen the wrong stalls so we figured it's just overly hyped. Ate Fae's pizza was a little too salty and my Elyu maki was bland, but we might try some other options next time. After all, those two were just one of the many options you can anxiously choose from.

Olas Banditos

If you’re itching for some good Mexican fix, try out Olas Bandito’s beef Burrito, soft Tacos, and Quesadillas. You’ll see it along the road on the way to Fatwave Surf Resort.

Mami King

Have some classic Mami and Lugaw at Mami King, located just beside Tagpuan and Mad Monkeys. They’ve got so many options at an affordable price.

Fatwave Surf Resort

I personally recommend their pizza and vegetarian Longganisa breakfast meal. They also offer grilled Filipino street food and delicious shakes. They also have a bar that offers 20% discount on their alcohols during happy hour.

Book your reservations as early as you can. Summer is here so you know how that gets.

Do not underestimate the waves and the crowd. Surf with care. If you’re not a professional, never ditch the leash.

Respect your surf instructors. They’re gonna be your mentor and savior.

Respect the place and clean up after yourself. I cannot highlight enough how as travelers, reducing your consumption of single-use plastic and packaged items can greatly help in alleviating our plastic pollution problem here in the Philippines. You may have seen an article about the trash left behind the previous beach breaks in Elyu. It’s heartbreaking. If you can afford to travel- you should at least afford to be a decent human being.

Support local initiatives. Elyu hosted the recent #SingleAndUnattached event that supports the movement against the construction of a coal-fired power plant. Since I wasn’t able to join this movement, I’ve signed THIS PETITION instead, and I’m happy to share with you guys that Elyu is now coal-free!

Girl: “Grandad, the rain’s gotten heavier again. Are we still able out to sea tomorrow?”

Grandad: “No, no going out on these waves. A typhoon is coming. Let’s clear up and go.”

Girl: “Grandad, on that rock ledge — I think there’s someone there.”

Stranger, standing on rock: “This water splashing upon my body, I feel none of it. But then why is it that it feels so familiar?”

Girl and Grandad: “Young man, don’t do it, don’t do anything stupid! Hey, you, hurry and get down, it’s so dangerous!”

Girl: “Hahah, so you weren’t trying to end your life, phew. Sorry for the misunderstanding.”

Grandad: “Judging on your smooth skin and unmarked body, you must be from of a family with money. A young master, right?” *Cough, cough.*

“Yingzi, go find some clean clothes for him to change into.”

(Yingzi is the name of the girl.)

(A cult-like gathering. Note: keep in mind that any magical/religious terms used in this comic has no relation to christianity. The word ‘priestess’ here is used to denote someone who has contact with the sea gods.)

Priestess: “In this unwell world the gods are angry; us mortals are suffering! I have received word from Tongling Sea-God, his highness, just now. If we want peace and mercy there is only one way, there is no other choice. You should discuss about it amongst yourselves.”

Civilian: “Priestess, even the sky has forsaken us this year. This time the typhoon will stop us from being able to go out to see for many days!”

Head Fisherman: “Are you saying we have to sacrifice again? It’s not as if we have limitless fifteen-to-sixteen years old girls in this village.”

Multiple Civilians: “Yeah, Old Head.”

“But Head, You — your Yingzi, isn’t she at that age now? If you can’t we’ll…”

“Yeah, yeah…”

(The Head Fisherman is the grandad of Yingzi.)

Head Fisherman, middle bubble: “No! Yingzi’s parents are all gone. In this family, I’ve only got this one niece left.”

Multiple Different Civilians: “Head Fisherman, you can’t be so selfish like that! This is for the sake of our entire village.”

“Yes, it’s a great responsibility.”

“You have to do it for the lives of everybody. It’s for the best.”

(In the house.)

Yingzi: “Achoo!”

Stranger: “Ying…”

(At fish.) “Oh.”

Yingzi: “Ok la. You don’t have to stare at me like that, with that silly look. Last fish on the plate, you eat it.”

(Bowl and chopsticks fall and break.)

(Yingzi holds out her hand to the stranger as she’s taken away.)

Stranger: “I’ve never understood. Being a mere puppet to be used like me, what’s the point of living at all?”

“Maybe the meaning of my life is to do battle and kill enemies. But then what’s the meaning of fighting?”

“I remember now. The meaning of having to fight is to protect the people that I want to protect.”

“It was like that in the past…it will be like that in the future.”

(Yingzi is tied as a human sacrifice to a post.)

Stranger: “Yingzi…”

“Don’t be afraid. I will protect you. Just like before — like the people of Chen Tang Guan.”

(Chen Tang Guan is the ‘stranger’s’ hometown, a great city. The golden bracelet he wears on his wrist enlarges into the Universe Ring 乾坤圈.)

This chapter is left to right.

Priestess: “Are you…you’re really the Marshal of the Central Alter, great god…”

“Th…Third Prince, Nezha.”

(Nezha breaks the bonds, freeing Yingzi.)

Civilians: “The Great God has descended! Help us!”

“Great God, please save us!”

(Nezha looks down on them with disdain.)

Civilians: “AH….”

“Save me please!”

Yingzi: “No…no.”

Yingzi, clutching onto Nezha: “Help them. I’m begging you, please help them!”

“They were forced to do this.”

Nezha: “You mortal humans’ weakness and smallness is not an excuse to do evil.”

“No…”

(He summons the Fire-tipped Spear 火尖槍)

“Humans are just like this…”

(More Translator notes, can skip: The story of Nezha is pretty well known and readers would be able to guess his identity from the hints given in the first chapters.

(An important part of Nezha mythology is the ‘Havoc in the Eastern Sea.’ The people of Chan Tang Guan begged the Eastern Dragon King for rain and depending on the version, the King either snatches children to eat or the people put out human sacrifices, etc. After one of Nezha’s friends were taken, he goes to upheave the sea kingdom and cause trouble for the King. Nezha gets into a fight with the King’s third son. Nezha is, like, 7 years old when he murders the King’s third son, prompting a huge siege over Chen Tang Guan by the King and his dragon brothers in revenge. They create devastating tsunamis, typhoons and floods.)

(Nezha’s father Li Jing thinks that Nezha has shamed the family and doomed Chen Tang Guan. To save his people, and in the ultimate show of filial piety, young Nezha takes his father’s sword and commits suicide. Li Jing burns down Nezha’s temple that was created after his death, saying that he’d been nothing but trouble for the family.)

(Nezha is then bought back to life by his teacher, Taiyi Zhenren, from the roots and essence of a lotus flower. He becomes a deity after rebirth, becoming the ‘Third Lotus Prince.’ Li Jing and Nezha then have a terrible relationship and have many fights. Because Nezha was more powerful than Li Jin, the gods give him a magical golden pagoda than can grow and shrink — created to subdue Nezha.)

Young Jiang Liu’er: “The bracelet you wear on your wrist, may I ask where it comes from?”

“Madam, please don’t misunderstand. It’s just that your bracelet is much like something that an old friend of mine has. It reminded me of them, so I asked.…”

Yingzi: “Young Master. This bracelet is also my good friend’s. Once he comes back, I’ll like to return it to him…”

Young Jiang Liu’er: “No matter. It was this monk that misjudged. Sorry for the trouble. Sanzai (‘there is good’).”

“Farewell.”

(Young Jiang Liu’er’s eyes glow fiery gold.)

Young Jiang Liu’er: “Looks like our dear friend is the same person ay…”

(Sun Wukong in armour with his feather crown, perched on a rock looking up at Heaven’s gate.)

(Clear skies and boats peacefully out at sea.)

Head fisherman/ Grandad: “Yingzi, recently you’ve been running to that temple non-stop…”

“The bloke is a heavenly deity, are you still thinking he’s going to come back?”

Yingzi: “Alright, Grandad, stop talking about it…”

(Yingzi looks out, seagulls fluttering away above, seeing something.)

Yingzi: “Is that…”

Yingzi, after something descended onto her boat lightning fast: “Why is it…you, Young…Young Monk?”

Sun Wukong, in the form of young Jiang Liu’er: “Madam, we meet again.”

“This one here is that old friend of mine I was talking about. But right now I have some errands to run. I’ve got to leave some trouble in your hands…”

Yingzi: “Ah…okay…”

(Eyes open.)

Yingzi: “You’re awake.”

Nezha: “Yingzi…”

“How could this…”

Yingzi: “Don’t move. I’ll tell you, it all went like this….”

(She tells him what happened.)

Nezha: “…A monk…”

Yingzi: “Before he left he told me to give you this…”

(She holds out the pagoda, the only thing that can imprison Nezha.)

“He said he was borrowing it from someone. And that ‘you can give it back when you feel like giving it back.’”

Nezha: “….”

Yingzi: “That friend of yours — is he a really strong god…? How did you guys meet?”

Nezha: “He…is very powerful. But he’s not really a god or deity. Us two fought a match back in the day, five hundred years ago.”

In Heaven -

Li Jing, Nezha’s Father: “Oh Jade Emperor! That demon monkey stole my seven-jewelled pagoda!”

“And…and beat me up in the process, you must—”

Jade Emperor: “What! That demon monkey came up here?! Where is he now?”

Li Jing: “After he hurt me…he…he just left.”

Jade Emperor: “Oh, so it’s like that…Then that’s good. That’s good.”

End.

Author notes: So I drew a sequel. Got to put some stress on Sir Li Jing and the Emperor la.

Translator notes, can skip: (Tbh I can’t read what the extra bit is, sorry. It’s congratulating someone on something.) Five hundred years ago when Sun Wukong was wrecking havoc in heaven, Nezha was a marshal sent down with the army to apprehend him. In the book, Nezha fought Sun Wukong one-on-one and lost.

In the 1999 journey to the west tv show and 05 lotus lantern they added an incredible addition where Nezha and Sun Wukong fight but they bond over each other’s skills and their mutual making-fun of the Eastern Dragon King, whom they both dislike. Sun Wukong invites Nezha back to his mountain to enjoy a hearty meal and they stop mid-fight to do just that. Then Nezha waves goodbye and runs back to Li Jing and the army at the end of the day after the hang-out, looking fake-disheveled, pretending to have suffered a defeat. They tell no one of this and no one ever knows. (I really really like this addition hehehee.)

Temples of Ubud

Bali, March 2017

During my one very short week in Ubud, we made it to five different temples in total. They are one of the reasons why I really wanted to go to Bali, to see a culture and religion so different to everything I grew up with and almost no similarities at all.

Going to a Temple is a bit like going to a church in Europe (but also very different). Don’t show shoulders, don’t show knees or anything above. Also, no matter which temple, you have to wear a Sarong, a big scarf you wear tied around your hips. Most temples offer them at the entrance for visitors, but well, they are not the prettiest, so buying one at the many shops in front of the temples is probably the best idea. Don’t forget to negotiate a lot, it’s just polite to do so!

Religion is a big topic in a country like Indonesia, I haven’t seen one person who isn’t doing some of the little rituals. One you will see the most often, is the offering: they give three times a day. For each meal they hold back a tiny bite from whatever they have to place it with a some flowers on a little banana leaf tray and offer it to their gods in front of shops or homes. Even the people at our hotel gave little offerings for each meal near the pool (which of course the monkeys stole after a few minutes). It’s a beautiful little ritual, so please, wherever you go, watch out for that little gifts!

Most temples in Bali are used by both, Hindi and Buddhist since a mix of these two is the main religion in Bali. There are always festivals happening at different temples, since they don’t have one big calendar and each temples follows it’s own. Also, each temple only gets visited by people of the community, the people who live around it. They often celebrate exactly the same, just months apart. The festivals are always held during full moon (calculate that into your travel itinerary). There is one festival at each temple every 210 days, so there is basically always one somewhere at one of the many temples.

You can find the five temples I visited down below, two of them where quite touristy, but thankfully, our amazing guides took us to more traditional hidden ones too, and thats probably the most beautiful way of experiencing the quietness and calming influence a temple has on you. The one at the bottom was my very favourite, even though they all were absolutely stunning and beautiful, but I guess holding your feet into holy water with Koi’s is just something very special!

Please be aware that I absolutely don’t speak any Indonesian and always just copied whatever was said on the signs in front of the temples, I also tried to learn as much as possible about the religion and culture, but I might still have done some research mistakes or understood something wrong! If anyone notices something, please come forward to I can change it.

GOA GAJAH

Also called the Elephant Cave, was the very first temple we visited on our little tour and it was by far the most touristy. But well, that`s totally understandable! For someone who is afraid of heights, please skip that one, it’s an amazing area but has quite some steps up and down. My Auntie had to wait at the top of it and couldn't make her way down tol the main area of it, where an old statue once fell down into a part of the holy water stream. The most impressive part are the million year old trees. Okay, the are by far not that old, but they are so impressive, that they could be. The temple got it’s name from a cave with some of the most wonderful reliefs around it.

PURA SAMUAN TIGA

Our second stop, just a few minutes with the car from the Elephant Cave Temple. This is a beautiful place to experience the real magic of a temple. It is an absolute stunning area, totally quiet and no tourists at all. It still get’s visited mostly by locals who come to pray and bring their offerings. Also, it is one of the temples where you can really experience the three court architecture, from one big, into a smaller, into the main one, where the most important part of ceremonies is held.

PURA PENATARA SANSIH

This was very special for me. Seeing a temple in the middle of celebrations, where thousands of fruits and sweets are waiting as an offering is something truly magical. As far as I understood, every temple is celebrating it's birthday each year, where the whole community comes together and brings one of those amazing curated multiple layers of golden trays. They are beautifully decorated and the families offer the best of the best here. Not only what they normally eat, sweets, cans of their favourite drink, exotic fruits and almost always a whole cake.

I couldn't stop taking pictures of them, it’s something so stunning to see. Also, experiencing a fully decorated temple was something very special for me, all those bright colours, the flowers. Just beautiful!

CANDI TEBING GUNUNG KAWI

Now to my second favourite temple I saw in my time in Ubud. It is. So Beautiful. Not just the temple itself, which was absolutely breathtaking (we are talking HUGE statues caved into the biggest stone walls ever), also all the way down there was the first glimpse I got of the famous rice terraces of Bali. I love this place. There are not a lot of places on this world that make me feel small, but this was definitely one of them. The feeling you get standing in front these 7 meter high shrines is just... there are just no words for it.

The temple exists since the 11th century and spreads across both sides of a small river. They are meant to be funeral monuments dedicated to an old king and his family. I also really recommend following one of the smaller paths through the rice fields to the other part of the temple where the priest used to live. You pass a beautiful quiet waterfall and feel like being the only person on this planet. Gosh, I miss that feeling.

OBYEK WISATA GUNUNG KAWI

I am very sorry to say, but I am not sure how to describe this place. We visited at the end of out trip and it' s my absolute favourite temple in Ubud. I am constantly trying to google it, but all I can find are images from the temple above and on Indonesian websites, so I guess they are somehow related to each other. If you want to visit it, which I highly recommend, there' s no place I ever felt that spiritual and save, please show the pictures to your guide and hopefully he will know how to get there. All I know is that it is one of the few holy water temples. And that they have Kois. And that I never ever in my whole life felt more peaceful than on this special little place. Kois are probably one of my favourite animals in the world and being able to sit there, in this incredible place, feeding them, holding my feet into the water, from time to time even touching them, was just insane. This is the stuff dreams are made of, guys. This is the place why I would like to return to Bali immediately (ok... the temple and the monkeys).

I feel like it’s good that I might not be able to tell you the real name of this place, I feel like it should stay a secret, stay untouched, not crowded with tourists and selfie sticks. I feel like this place is too precious, too much of a dream, to share it with anyone. But well, there is no harm in showing you the pictures, I guess.
