I thought cancelling Khoreva was understandable but Kim and Nagahisa?? Unhinged. They've won the event before, they have personal ties to YAGP, it was in part YAGP which got them to the company they're currently trying to shun. Regardless of that it's so strange to invite them only to ban them from performing at the last second.

Technically, they were banned by the directors of Lincoln Center (the Koch Theater), which is run by a quasi-government agency. The Ukrainian Embassy and the Ukrainian diaspora in NYC threatened a mass protest outside during the event, so the theater refused to let them perform. The organizers of the YAGP could have moved forward but didt want to burn a bridge. It was such a dumb move. If they had not invited Khoreva, I think it would have been fine. But I think her participation was the tipping point.

I both 100% support Ukraine, but think this was handled very poorly.

List of juniors who made the final round

Hey! Reading your blog is one of the highlights of my day. Do you think ballet is getting too good too fast? I was watching one of the YAGP livestreams, and all the pre-comp kids look so talented and poised. Would you advise inspiring dancers to take part in comps?

I talked a bit about my experience with competitions and whether I'd advise them for young dancers here. Essentially, while not mandatory, they can provide a great opportunity and motivation for young students, especially if approached as "I'm going to compete to improve myself" and not "I'm gonna compete to win." They can open doors and make training and company contracts more accessible to dancers as well.

But for the first question, I think competitions can definitely contribute to young dancers burning out. Like you don't need to be doing triple pirouettes en pointe at age 8, that's absurd. You also do NOT need to be a prodigy to have a professional career, in fact, I would argue it's better if you're not. YAGP is finally getting somewhat smarter and severely limiting the repertoire list for their 'pre-competitive' category but I would argue that the entire category shouldn't exist to being with. What business does an 8-year-old have portraying a bayadere or even worse an odalisque? Like they're not (and SHOULDNT BE) technically or emotionally ready to be dancing these professional-level variations. And if you're just going to water the choreo down then what's even the point of pretending to preserve the classical heritage?

YAGP Chicago was great! Love seeing the MN comp dancers do ballet. Congrats to them!
