Every song in my Top 99 most-played with a Spotify popularity rating <30
"14,000 Things To Be Happy About" by Troubled Hubble
Aughties Chicago alt-rock with some really pithy and clever lyrics. This is my number-one most listened to song on Spotify and I basically know it by heart at this point. It has....the vibes.
"Guitar Hero" by Amanda Palmer
"And I could save you, baby, but it isn't worth my time". Enough said.
"The Point of It All" by Amanda Palmer
I sing along to the chorus of this one every time even though I'm still not quite sure what the song is about, exactly. It's just that catchy.
"Rum" by Say Anything
I played this in front of my dad and one of my brothers once and they were all like "You actually listen to this?!" ...well, as a matter of fact I do. It fucks. Give it a chance until the bridge comes around.
"John McClane" by Say Anything
Who doesn't love Casiotone and oblique Die Hard analogies???
"Lifted" by New Politics
This song makes me happy idk. Maybe it'll make you happy too.
"Communicating Doors" by The Extra Lens
A masterclass in lyrical density. It's very short and every line is like, super-saturated with meaning. Also, contains the best written sex scene of John S. Darnielle's songwriting career.
"Blake Says" by Amanda Palmer
Y'know what? My heart is in Alaska all the time.
"Kicking Me out of the Band" by Sean Nelson
This song is objectively hilarious and also, somehow, tragic and poignant at the same time. If you like melodrama and witty lyrics, you'll....probably like just about all of Sean Nelson's work, tbh. He's one of the most underrated lyricists of our time. If you ask me.
"Windfall" by Son Volt
I don't listen to alt-country often so I'm probably not all that qualified to comment. That said, this is some good fuckin alt-country. I've been a fan of this song since I was approximately seven years old.
"Ampersand" by Amanda Palmer
This song starts off slow but like. The payoff is so, so worth it. AFP's lyricism at its best.
"The Bagman's Gambit" by The Decemberists
A love story for the ages, and also one of The Decemberists' most experimental instrumental segments. This is a fascinating and improbable song that I could not recommend more.
"Annan Water" by The Decemberists
This is from The Decemberists' rock opera and uh. Well. It's certainly operatic. I am extremely attached to this song for personal reasons.
"Ultra Violet" by The Extra Glenns
Ultra Violet (ultra violet). If
"Cemetery Row" by The Minus 5
Just fuckin try not to sing along to this. Pure three-chord anti-folk revelry.
"Self-" by Will Wood and the Tapeworms
Theaterkidcore. You gotta listen to the whole album tho.
"Hey Lacey" by Electric Century
Electronic pop-rock for Capricorn Venuses and/or Mikey Way stans. Electric Century knows how to write a fuckin hook, man.
