Character Names in LBFAD – Meaning and Significance
Tumblr media
What’s in a name? For the characters of LBFAD (Love Between Fairy and Devil), a whole lot of hidden meanings! These are not apparent to English viewers. Here are my translations and interpretations of these meanings.
DongFang Qing Cang - 东方青苍: “East, Cyan, Dark blue”
The surname “DongFang” means East, the direction of the rising sun. Both Dongfang Qingcang’s (DFQC) personal terrace at Silent Moon Palace and the replica Arbiter Hall he built for Xiao Lanhua (XLH) face East, and capture the most beautiful sunrises. DFQC (and previous generations of DongFangs) are well-respected by their people and enjoy the best locations and residences in Cangyan Sea.
The “Cang” in DFQC was named for his realm, “Cang” Yan Sea, as he was expected to be its leader and follow the path set for him by his father, and Lady Yan before him. Lady Yan chose to rid herself of emotions in order to wield Hellfire, and DFQC’s father forced the same decision onto him. The hanzi (mandarin character) for “Cang” in DFQC and Cangyan Sea means dark blue, and the darkness of this colour represents the darkness of the path he was expected to follow.
Tumblr media
But “Cang” is not the only colour in DFQC’s name! The “Qing” in his name means lighter shades of blue/green, or cyan. And despite his prescribed mission to emotionlessly conquer the three realms, DFQC has many lighter, more peaceful shades to his character that reveal themselves as the series progresses. He forms a friendship and brotherhood with his enemy Changheng, who shares with him a love of playing music, art and cuju! And he rises above the cruel dictator of Shuiyuntian who almost annihilated his people, by sending his people to aid Shuiyuntian.
Xiao Lan Hua - 小兰花: “Little Orchid Flower”
We are first introduced to our female lead as “Xiao Lanhua”, which is not a name, but a description of what she believes her true form to be, a little orchid flower. But this was a disguise given to her by her parents and upheld by Siming. Her real name is Xiyun.
Tumblr media
Xi Yun - 息芸: “Every breath”
The character for “Xi” in XLH’s true name is the same as the “Xi” in her realm, “Xishan”, and means breath (of life). Just like DFQC, she is named for her realm, as she was the intended leader of Xishan as its Goddess. The Xilan tribe of Xishan had powerful healing magics, and hers is the most powerful of all, with the ability to resurrect the dead with her blood, thus providing the breath of life. She uses this to great effect, resurrecting DFQC in ep. 26, everyone who died on the battlefield in ep. 31, and freeing the 100,000 sealed soldiers of the Moon Tribe.
The “Yun” in her name meaning every, combined with “Xi” can be interpreted as “every breath”. Sadly, XLH’s every breath is for one purpose and brings her closer to her one destiny. She is fated to sacrifice herself to save the three realms from Taisui. If this had happened, then like Lady Chidi before her, her sacrifice would soon have been forgotten.
Tumblr media
Chi Di - 赤地: “Red/Barren Earth”
The “Chi” in Lady Chidi’s name means red, and paired with “Di” meaning earth, can also mean barren earth. She is the only official in Shuiyuntian seen wearing Red, as even the current God of War, Changheng, conforms to the same white and pale blue robes that other officials wear. Chidi is therefore a standout who asserts her individuality and does not conform to expectations. Her way of thinking outside the box, led to DFQC and his 100,000 Moon Tribe soldiers being completely blindsided by her sacrifice 30,000 years ago. It also led to her breaking heaven’s laws to resurrect Ronghao, to her later detriment.
Chidi wields powerful earth magics, as represented by her name. These are so powerful that she is able to seal the 100,000 soldiers of the Moon Tribe within the barren earth of Xuanxu realm. Her mighty Shuofeng sword is also swallowed by the barren earth and her magic cannot be reversed without her primordial spirit.
Tumblr media
Xun Feng - 巽风: “Obedient wind”
The “Xun” in Xunfeng means to obey, and the “Feng” means wind. His name can be interpreted as either “obedient to the wind” or an “obedient wind”. Like the wind, Xunfeng lacks substance, confidence and ability, and is disrespected by his people during DFQC’s imprisonment. Many contenders try to steal his position as Moon Supreme, and he almost dies on the Wind Plain until DFQC arrives to save him.
But Xunfeng cares fiercely for his people. In his attempt to protect them, he collaborates with Ronghao without knowing his identity or motivations. He is thus “obedient to the wind” where Ronghao is an unknown and unseen entity, like the wind. Xunfeng is unable to discern that Ronghao is keeping Cangyan Sea in a constant state of civil unrest and tormenting the souls of deceased Moon Tribe members until much later, with DFQC’s help!
Tumblr media
Shang Que - 觞阙: “Watchtower”
“Que” meaning watchtower is an apt description for DFQC’s lieutenant and right-hand man. Shangque has many talents suiting him to this role! These include his ability to be stealthy, gather information discreetly, undertake covert missions successfully, act as a powerful defensive force, and a healing one due to his skill with Chinese medicine. Like a watchtower, he kept watch for 30,000 years during DFQC’s absence on all events occurring within the three realms. His loyalty and love for DFQC, whom he views as a brother and whose return he awaited for 30,000 years, are astounding!
“Shang” paired with “Que” can mean lacking sustenance. This is the state Shangque was in when orphaned as a young boy, and many tried to take advantage of him and his dragon body. If not for DFQC saving him, he would likely have perished from hunger or been murdered :(
Jie Li - 结黎: “Dark knot”
Jieli suffers from much internal torment which is like a dark knot inside her. From the moment she was born, she never knew or received love, and was raised by people who continually exploited her, physically harming her and threatening her life. That she is even capable of loving and caring for others is a miracle! Unlike Shangque, nobody like DFQC ever stepped in to save her and care for her.
Jieli cares deeply for both XLH and Shangque. Her life under threat, she makes some bad choices such as spilling a drop of Chidi’s blood onto the Bone Orchid. This is one of many dark and knotty situations she encounters. Although she soon decides she would rather die than hurt XLH, Dieyi poisons Shangque to force her obedience.
Tumblr media
Yun Zhong - 云中: “Among the clouds”
Yunzhong literally lives among the clouds, but his head is also in the clouds. He is very narrow-minded and cannot think outside the box. When XLH does not fit within the eight-class system of Shuiyuntian, he immediately decides she is Moon Tribe (even before the Bone Orchid protects her) without considering other possibilities. He is so strict with Changheng that he would rather execute the most powerful asset to Shuiyuntian (and his brother!!) than tolerate the slightest disobedience! Throughout the series, he is intent on exterminating the Moon Tribe and almost does in ep. 31 on completely false pretences.
Tumblr media
Chang Heng - 长珩: “Steadfast bird”
Like the golden bird brooches that the celestials wear to represent their tribe, Changheng is a model citizen of Shuiyuntian. He is steadfast and loyal to his duties and puts these above his personal desires. When trying to rescue XLH from Cangyan Sea in ep. 13, he is honest with her that he cannot break the rules of Shuiyuntian, and only hopes that Yunzhong will be reasonable and lenient towards her! Changheng is far more steadfast and loyal than the average celestial. He is the only one apart from Ronghao to visit Chidi’s grave on her death anniversary, honours his brotherhood with DFQC after returning to the immortal world, and after learning Ronghao’s secret identity, listens to his side of the story.
Dan Yin - 丹音: “Crimson tidings”
Twice, Danyin is the bearer of important news, relaying her visions from the Tianji mirror to the sacrifice of her own desires. First, she tells a wounded and imprisoned Changheng about his wedding to XLH in the mortal realm, causing him to start a mortal tribulation. Then, she tells Yunzhong and the High Council about XLH’s true identity as the Goddess, saving Changheng from execution and leading to his wedding with XLH.
Tumblr media
Rong Hao - 容昊: “Vastly compromising”
Ronghao has “one tiny earthly desire”, that his beloved master can live. What he is prepared to do to achieve this includes burning the souls of dead celestials and Moon tribe, massacring the entire Xilan population including their women and children, forcing his master to endure 30,000 years of cruel mortal tribulations and using evil qi to keep her alive. His willingness to vastly compromise both himself and her leaves Lady Chidi aghast.
Die Yi - 蝶衣: “Butterfly costume”
Dieyi is a shape-shifter and the different forms she takes, butterfly or woman, are her costumes, which help her to be sneaky and nefarious.
Tumblr media
Xie Wanqing - 谢惋卿: “Withering sigh”
Having forgotten her life as Lady Chidi, Xie Wanqing feels incomplete without knowing why, expressed by her sad sighs. Chidi is forced to endure countless mortal tribulations just like this one and die (wither) repeatedly. (In the novel, in each of these lives she is condemned to be murdered by the one she loves!)
Xiao Run - 萧润: “Mournful wealth”
Both Xiao Run and his true self as Changheng come from positions of wealth and noble status. But both of them mourn the loss of freedom that comes from this – although Xiao Run is more of a carefree rebel! :D
Tumblr media
Si Ming - 司命: “Arbiter of fate”
Using the power of her position as Arbiter of Fate, Siming has repeatedly defied heaven’s laws and changed fate! She resurrects Ronghao as an immortal, creating a new destiny leaf for him. She released the convicted dragon Chang Yuan and married him. And she instructs DFQC on how to also defy nature’s laws and change destiny! :D
Chang Yuan - 长渊 “Steadfast abyss”
He is the deep abyss that Siming falls into, as in choosing him, she accepts the fate of being imprisoned with him in the Ruins of Myriad Heavens for the rest of eternity. But at least he is steadfastly loyal to her.
Tumblr media
Tai Sui - 太岁: “Very Ancient”
This most ancient of tricksters could not be defeated by numerous generations of Goddesses, who merely sealed him beneath Xishan. Over his very long life spanning hundreds of millenia, he has learned to tell whatever lies are needed to manipulate others and ensure his survival.

Part 2 of the outline of my LBFAD x TTEOTM crossover idea (which I need now more than ever given how the series ended).
Part 1 here. We were left at the Nehter River. Now, I think the reason the disaster demonic duo couldn’t find the Devil Fetus for 500 years is because TTJ was in the river while the Evil Bone was with Susu, who timeskipped to her own time so, in those 500 years, there were no Evil Bone nor Devil Fetus to find.
[Which means that having TTJ dive in the Nether River was actually a good idea to prevent/delay the end of the world, or at least to spare him five centuries of tortures from the demons who’d try to awaken their master (not that he didn’t suffer plenty in the Nether River, but that was his choice, you see)]
That said, the 500 years disappeareance could happen, in this fic, also if the very worried immortal family decides to take a risk and bring TTJ with them in the immortal realm, preferably Xishan or Cangyanhai. In fact, in Xishan he could recover from the wound of the Nails in his heart and cultivate better his new immortal soul. They’d also explain him the nature of Susu’s sacrifice, once given the chance, and XLH would beg him to be patient and wait for LSS to be back in a new life, like she waited for DFQC.
But we know TTJ is a stubborn freak (who we love) and I think more likely he dived in the Nether River anyway, “bye family, come pick me up in 500 years” sort of.
This got even longer than the other part.
Shangque basically adopts Nian Baiyu. Aka: Nian Baiyu doesn’t fall prey of the demons and gains immortality thanks to his new dad shifu. They were close before too, since Shangque saw the poor lieutenant interact with TTJ and had flashbacks of himself with DFQC. Jieli insists on taking in Nian Baiyu’s sister too when their mother dies in the demon attack (this isn’t plot-relevant, I just liked this idea). The Yiyue tribe passes under Shangque’s protection and of the Moon Tribe by proxy, therefore no one is taken hostage or stuff.
Qingyu and Pian Ran get married and rule the empire together, although they make to history as they created a new tradition about the emperor wearing the mask and the empress must never be seen, the latter only to let Pian Ran be free to do whatever she pleases. After 300 years or so, they plan to find a good-hearted, strong, righteous and smart kid to adopt as their heir for when they plan to retire and travel around the world.
That said!
When the Nether River spits out TTJ, he does end up near the immortal sect, while his family was waiting for him near the Yiyue tribe’s settlement. It causes a bit of a delay in them meeting again.
No one remembers he had been a disciple over 500 years before just like no one remembered Xiao Lin, which is curious but true because most people forgot, have died, or just are too young to have met him in those 3 years so long before.
Master Zhaoyou still puts TTJ to test because “a disciple who had not cultivated any art in five centuries is as good as a newbie” or something (he dissipated most his cultivation in the Nether River so Zhaoyou is pretty much right). That’s when Zhaoyou finds out a few things that he keeps for himself about TTJ, including the fact he’s the Devil Fetus but without the Evil Bone, that he was raised by actual immortals, and there’s something else he can’t quite figure out and breaks his head over.
The first thing XLH does upon finding TTJ again is slap his arm and chastize him for making her worry for other 500 years, as if she had not suffered enough being parted for so long from someone she loved before. He apologizes and she cries and obvsy forgives him. DFQC gives him the cold shoulder for the grand total of a day, then he caves in too. Changheng and Shangque can’t even do that and hug him right away. Once they arrive, Danyin and Jieli are much worse, they go on a tag-team two-hours long tirade while Xunfeng is just, like, there watching and gloating with this judgmental face that ends up being worse than everything else put together.
Nian Baiyu and Changheng offer to stay in the sect with him if what he wants is to stay, everyone else will come back from time to time, like they used to do in his childhood.
None of them had the chance to meet Susu yet or even hear of her name, at least until the competition comes and, whoops, there she is! The Lady of Spirituality, who would have guessed? And she saved TTJ again, just in case someone had doubts it was her.
Before that, though, the immortal fam offer their help containing the demons during the competition, since that’s not an interference with mortal fates. It changes everything and nothing: they manage to trap the two big demons for a while, but those two are very strong and manage to escape.
XLH is very happy to meet Susu again, although Susu tries to pretend she doesn’t know any of them, XLH laughs and tells her she tried the trick too and it never works in the long run.
(TTJ knew that part of the story and he pulls a DFQC and kisses Susu instead of only tricking her into revealing herself. Yes, that’s a scene I loved in LBFAD and I expected one like that in TTEOTM, damn it!)
He still ends up following her to Jing and being baited by Si Ying and Jing Mie, use the Crossbow, find out Susu has the Evil Bone and so forth because that bit was solid.
Since TTJ told his parent(s) a through recollection of Bo’re life (save for some, ehm, more private bits), they all know that Di Mian is a lying liar who lies, who did not kill the (D)evil God - the previous Goddess of Xishan did - and that he was the real cause of his beloved wife’s death. It discredits him a lot, especially during the trial (Changheng basically moved in the Xiaoyao sect at this point and was already there to help, DFQC and XLH arrive later for reasons).
Although, it’s undeniable that TTJ is the Devil Fetus and used to have the Evil Bone and still has the Crossbow so it only helps so much.
DFQC crushes the Pillar to interrupt the punishment (and gets real scary) while XLH starts to chastize the sects for being unable to see past their prejudice. Susu adds to it with her retelling (and the lie about the Evil Bone being gone) just like in canon because that scene is epic and almost made me cry so it must stay as it is.
Incidentally, the trial is also when TTJ finds out his family adopted him to prevent the end of the world, which is pretty devastating interms of trust, but the love they have for him is genuine and so is his for them, so everything is later resolved with a shoutfest and lots of tears.
Zhaoyou is unofficially dragged in the loop of the immortal family after that. He admits he had perceived/noted the Devil Fetus’ nature from the start but wanted to give his student a chance. They’re all very touched by that, and grateful (and Changheng developed a bit of a crush on him, no I accept no criticism here).
They end up sharing all they know: in the 500 years, they made researches on the Devil Fetus and how to separate its destiny from that of Tai Sui, but aside from removing the Evil Bone and keeping the artifacts far from each other since none can be destroyed, it seems like there’s nothing more to do, not without killing TTJ and make him regenerate in Xishan’s soil. The only problem is that without a soul vessel (like XLH’s seed or the moon bone orchid) the new life would be completely new, so not TTJ, and that’s not a viable solution, so TTJ needs to cultivate enough to create a soul vessel for his primordial spirit to be preserved if he wants to get rid of Tai Sui’s influence for good. It’s a lenghty procedure and the demons, along with Tai Sui, give them no time for this to happen.
There is, nevertheless, a moment of respite, while they start to plan the wedding. The immortal family almost goes overboard with the engagement gifts.
TTJ asks LSS’s fathers to let some of the immortal family assist in the removal of the Evil Bone (he doesn’t trust Di Mian. in. the. slightest). Di Mian wouldn’t want to, but has to cave in to avoid suspicions.
During the procedure, Di Mian manages to near-fatally wound Qu Xuanzi and DFQC with the Sky-Slashing Sword to the point of rendering them comatose and manages to put the blame on TTJ, he also plans to completely kill them but he’s stopped by LSS figuring out what happened. Qu Xuanzi very nearly dies (maybe he doesn’t. I just decided this can be an everybody lives au, all things considered, with XLH being there it can be).
Di Mian still flees with the Evil Bone, followed by Zhaoyou and Changheng.
TTJ is lured out by Si Ying and Jing Mie who kidnapped Susu thinking she still has the Evil Bone or at least can bait TTJ. She manages to escape mostly on her own because she’s more badass than the show allowed her to be.
Danyin and Xunfeng fight against Si Ying and Jing Mie because I say so to cover Susu’s escape and her start looking for the entrance of the Devil Palace.
(Eh, that means the Spider Demon won’t appear here, nor there will be her fight with Nian Baiyu. Whoops)
After the fight with Di Mian, Zhaoyou is about to devilize but Changheng uses half his immortal soul and near so of his cultivation to stop the process and save him. Unfortunately, this also means they’re both out of commission and seem to be dead on the outside eye.
The All-in-Distress-Way is opened, cue the sect people being stupid (the red master whatshisname tries to use the Crossbow which backfires and kills him LOL), Susu facing her shit dad once more, and so forth.
TTJ saves Susu from Di Mian, but he’s forced to devilize. Of course, he surrendered only on surface, because he 100% intends to weaponize the chance he’s given to destroy Tai Sui from the inside, a true suicide mission (it’s nice that I started to write this outline days before I saw the final 5 eps and I still got it right, that part of the plot makes perfect sense, if you ask me).
This starts an internal power struggle between TTJ and TS to control the body, the whole speech about all things sad and evil feeding the Devil God and all that drill.
After GYJW calls back all the sect people, including LSS, he finds out Zhaoyou isn’t dead and Changheng tries to make him see reason. Idk where this may lead until this dialogue is written though, but I feel this must happen because GYJW is a bad cheap copy of Changheng (and XL wasn’t that bad) he could have been a much better character, so perhaps he’s salvageable here.
The sects still have to intervene to stop the All-in-Distress Way because stopping the end of the world is the right thing to do.
Susu will have none of it, of course, and goes to speak with her (almost) husband, consequences be damned. So do XLH and DFQC, although he’s still wounded by the Sky-Slashing Sword.
Changheng stays behind in the sect to help the planning, Danyin and Xunfeng decide to return to the Immortal realms to mobilize Shuiyuntian and Changyanhai to try block the All-in-Distress Way from above.
TTJ ends up having to fool not only LSS but also XLH and DFQC, and actually manages to get the upper hand on all three because Tai Sui started to gloat about how he tricked the Goddess of Xishan and the great Yuezun by taking the primordial spirit of their future child and turning him into his vessel. Basically, in the river of reincarnation, he swiped their future child’s soul and forced the Evil Bone onto him, and then made sure he’d be born in a mortal’s life of suffering to break him down to his will for good. He planned to reveal it near the end of the world to make DFQC and, most importantly, Xi Yun unable to kill him (whether this is the truth or not, it’s debatable, it all depends on the message we want to pass thorugh with this rewriting).
Unfortunately, it works, and TTJ is left to apply his initial plan of having himself killed by Susu after the Celestial Punishment Array will hit.
During the Bo’re life, though, Susu sees through his lies, three lifetimes gave her a good enough grasp of his tellings. The fact she figured out most the plan does little to stop it, at first, since both play their parts till the end.
XLH is conflicted for a while, but eventually agrees to the plan, although for her it’s another heartbreak and repeating history. She says this much to TTJ who falters for a moment, revealing his true feelings but he has to push trough.
The Celestial Punishment Array is made by the sects and supported by Shuiyuntian and Cangyanhai, which once again joined forces to defeat Tai Sui. It’s a pretty big thing because it’s the first time in 30000 years the Immortals descend among mortals to help them (and will mark a new alliance for the future).
LSS ascends because that’s what she has to do and, in the “godly council” there’s also Xi Yun, who promises to be by her side. Chu Huang thanks her.
Tai Sui is ultimately erased for good by the combined efforts of TTJ, ascended!Susu and Xi Yun, but this effort claims TTJ’s life, as he expected, and Susu’s, who sacrificed her godhood to turn the Scale into a soul vessel for him to come back when she realized he intended to die for good.
XLH is left to pick up the pieces: given her phoenix nature, LSS is back as an egg, which her adoptive father (if he survived, otherwise Ye Qingyu and Pian Ran) will take care of until she’s back. As for TTJ, the Scale-turned soul vessel will allow, with time, to fix and restore in full his primordial spirit, so XLH and DFQC take it to Xishan and wait.
Qingyu and Pian Ran had been using their combined energies to protect the kingdom, but since they had each only half her original demonic energy/life, they end up consuming most of it, at which point they agree they had had enough of being rulers, and retire to the countryside.
Time skip to a few centuries later, when the taizi dianxia (crown prince) of Cangyanhai meets the Lady of Spirituality of the immortal sect. Neither remembers each other, again, until they touch by accident while bickering and then it all comes back to them.
And, for fuck’s sake, this time they get married decently and are happy with their daughter and extended family and all is well.
THE END and holy shit, if the outline is that long, this could become a monster fic.

Oh you can tell that DFQC's ego has been IMMENSELY hurt (not to mention his feelings) by XLH's "how can we have affection and loyalty?" scene from Episode 19 because he keeps throwing it sardonically right into her face.
I mean, just look at it: - "Since I am the ‘high-ranking Moon Supreme’, why didn't you obey my order?" - "Since you said you and I are not friends, I have nothing to blame you for." - "Since you and I are not friends, don't say these empty words anymore." - "You said there's no love between us." And my favourite (there might be more, I'm half-way through Episode 21 to write this): - "There is someone who values love and loyalty in the fairy realm? This is the first time I've ever known it."
He keeps throwing her own words at her, calling out her hypocrisy, jabbing at her and prodding, probably in hope that she would break and tell him that she didn't mean her words that way and there actually IS affection and loyalty between them.
Isn't offended DFQC just adorable?
(Newsflash - eventually, she doesn’t only tell him so, she also SHOWS how much affection and loyalty there is between them like the wonderful badass woman XLH is.)

Just realizing that this dancing and happily laughing XLH from Episode 8 is the one who has just been kissed by certain Moon Supreme in order to... ehm... NOT to suffocate to death.
At the same time, XLH were crushed just mere minutes ago when Changheng eliminated her from the list of the new members of the Fountain Palace.
She’s somewhat way too happy for someone whose dreams have just been crushed, isn’t she? 😉

Did anybody ask for TTEOTM x LBFAD fic ideas? No? I had one anyway. It’s massive and I can’t currently write it (too many irl things, too many other wips to work on) so I’ll put it here and do what you want with it (except money, that’s illegal, fics must be free). Keep in mind I read none of the novels so anything that isn’t the the dramas won’t be considered.
So, listen here.
First of all, we need to merge some things and move others, so the two stories can exist in the same universe. Therefore: 1) Ming Ye and Sang Jiu’s story goes back to 30.000 years before, while DFQC was trapped for 10.000 (I always thought the 30.000 years of imprisonment felt a little too much, also this lowers the age gap between XLH and DFQC, which is a pro). 2) The Evil God Tai Sui and the Devil God are one and the same. It will make sense, I promise.
Starting from those two premises, the timeline is as it follows:
30.000 years ago the Devil God vs the Gods fight happens, along with the MYxSJ arc.
When MY estabilishes no one will live in Shangqing realm anymore, the immortals move to Shuiyuntian, founding it in a place next to the already-existing Xishan, by deviating the rivers with the Water Gem.
To be seen as equals or superiors, the heads of Shuyuntian bring back the title of God of War. The other godly titles can’t be assigned the same way as only the God of War can be trained to become one and not be born as such. Lady Chidi is chosen after some time.
In the meantime, conflict arises between the xianzi and yuezhu. Yannv, (canon) first leader of the Moon Tribe, guides her people beyond the River of Lost Memories and founds Cangyanhai.
The Xilan tribe was already there with the only real goddess left, the Goddess of Xishan, who was seen as a minor deity and not involved in the Shangqing realm’s affairs at all. Despite that, the Goddess is the one who effectively destroys the (D)evil God’s body and seals its spirit, not knowing a part of it (the Evil Bone) and its weapons (BRSeal and GSCrossbow and Sword) had been left in the mortal realm.
Fast forward to the events of LBFAD, the story goes as we know it, just that the fight between DFQC and Chidi was only 10.000 years before the events, not 30.000 (it literally changes nothing, plot-wise).
Tai Sui’s plan was to take control of Chidi (or DFQC)’s body as he lost his one during the conflict with the previous Goddess of Xilan, and then retrieve his weapons to bring the end of the world. His death and subsequent fall to the Nether River prevented him to do so, but the Evil Bone he left to the Yiyue tribe in the mortal realm is a soul vessel (like the Bone Orchid for DFQC) and allowed him to stay somewhat alive, waiting for his next chance.
Fast forward some centuries: TTJ is born and Tai Sui is determined in making the poor thing into the perfect vessel for his return just in time for Ji Ze’s power running out and the Barren Abyss be open again.
Here we are to the start of the fic (very long so it’s mostly under cut):
Susu fails the first time she tries to change TTJ’s fate (she dies too early, without being able to switch the Evil Bone with her Immortal Essence) and the Mirror of the Past sends her back to try again.
Knowing the Devil God and Tai Sui are one and the same, Ji Ze manages to send a message to Xi Yun so she could help LSS. XLH looks into TTJ’s destiny book and sees it’s filled with misery that will culminate with TTJ giving up his body to Tai Sui, cue destruction of the world lalala, all as it was before LSS’s trip basically (I refuse to awknowledge that the Devil God could have known about the time travel, Di Mian is a lying liar who lied, the plan only went as far as TTJ’s mistreatment and death on the frozen lake, Susu changed everything from there on).
To prevent it, the LBFAD team decides to risk changing his fate, and they snatch TTJ away while he’s sent as hostage from Jing to Shang. It’s the origin of a legend that the cursed prince of Jing was taken away by demons, some say to be eaten, some say he became one too.
TTJ is raised in Yunmengze by everyone acting as his relatives (I still have to decide if it’d be more interesting to have DFQC and XLH adopt him as parents, or go the more practical route of Changheng adopting him alone since he’s the one who canonically moved to the mortal realm full time and has no other responsibilities. Or it could be all three? together? on rotation? idk. Also, I can’t decide what to do with Yinxing because I don’t like her much but I sort of understand her too, it would be nice to give her a redemption arc/new storyline)
Anyway!
Little TTJ is raised by a team of immortals who end up loving him a whole lot and XLH manages to fix him a tree of emotions very early, so he’s a sweetheart with functioning love strings and all (but only with his family because most humans can tell there’s something wrong with him and dislike/mistreat him. That’s the Evil Bone’s influence, the family knows it and can ignore it, humans do not).
TTJ is smart enough to understand there’s more going on with his new family but he loves and trusts them enough to just accept things as they are. They end up telling him a few things about themselves in bits and pieces until he’s old enough.
Basically, by the time he’s 20, he’s more drama!Cang Jiumin than any iteration of TTJ. Plus the family actually warned him against Tai Sui (although they didn’t quite tell him he’s the Devil Fetus - gosh I hate this expression) and told him stories about it and the last fight and about their own true identities.
They have no idea how to remove the Evil Bone without killing him, LSS is the only one who knows because Ji Ze didn’t have enough energy to tell XLH everything. In fact, he just told her “look at that destiny book there” and “Li Susu knows what to do” and then closed the conversation.
The LBFAD group has no idea of the existence of the Bone Refining Seal or the God Slaughtering Crossbow and Sword at first. This will be a problem later on.
17 y-o TTJ joins the immortal sect to learn their manner of cultivation and befriends Xiao Lin who, at the end of the three years of training, invites him to Shang.
As soon as he arrives in Shang’s capital, TTJ starts to recover memories of the past-now-erased life little by little until Susu!Xiwu arrives. They both have a whole set of memories of a disastrous past, a whole lot of tangled feelings, and no clue the other does too.
LSS still needs to fulfill her mission, but finds it way harder now that the circumstances have changed. TTJ has been trying to see the woman he loved in the original YXW but felt there was something off, until the Temple incident, aka the moment LSS transmigrated into YXW.
Cue lots of getting close, suspicions if the other remembers the other life, falling in love even more, and other stuff (I already know this is going to be my favourite part).
The immortal family is against TTJ courting YXW because they know his fate says he’ll “die young but widowed” and that will be the first step to Tai Sui’s return. They just tell him it’s because she has a foul temperament and a bad reputation and try to take him back to Lucheng before it’s too late (keyword: try).
The Ye family doesn’t like that he has an unclear background and that YXW would have to move away from them so they oppose too (and don’t treat him well. at all. some things don’t change).
TTJ is definitely too stubborn and wants to marry her anyway. She agrees because she knows it’s the easiest way to complete her mission (and she actually wants to, tbh). They basically elope and run to Jing’s kingdom.
Somehow, TTMinglang finds out TTJ’s true identity (oh, this could work if Yinxing stays in the plot, she’s a dead giveaway since she was his only remaining nanny!) and, thinking his loathed third brother is coming for the throne, decides to kill him, employing/blackmailing Lan’an.
The scene of YXW jumping off the ship happens because she figures out if she doesn’t she won’t be able to get her hands on the World Overturning Jade and she really needs it for the plan. Of course, she doesn’t tell him, cue hearbreak, the ambush with the poison dart, and so on.
They are saved by DFQC from Fu Yu (sorry, Pian Ran, you won’t have the chance to fillet the bitch in this lifetime, unless DFQC decides to spare her, I have to decide) and from the poisoning by XLH. Both are very upset by the whole thing but TTJ has no intention of backing off and give up on having the love of his life by his side, cue a heartfelt speech that ultimately convinces them.
Said love of his life feels very very guilty, even more so after that speech, and runs off to the Barren Abyss to talk with Ji Ze (and save Fuya) and ask him what more she could do. TTJ is certain she’ll come back to him anyway because his wife always did (although they are not properly married here yet!).
Once in Jing, TTJ, even if he initially planned not to become emperor this time, sees that people have a truly terrible time under Minglang and decides to take the matters in his own hands. He was a pretty good ruler in the other life and he can be one again. This time he makes certain his deranged brother is dead.
The immortal family can’t interfere more than they already did with mortals’ fates, so they let him do things on his own, with minor helping him in daily matters, training and healing. War breaks out anyway because the king of Shang is an ass.
I need a good reason for them to enter Bo’re life again since they know the dragon can’t actually be used. Perhaps it’s to give peace to Ming Ye’s spirit, or to show Xiao Lin what kind of person his beloved wife is, idk, but they do and LSS obtains the Soul Slaying Tear.
Needless to say, she isn’t happy about being able to collect the Heart Shattering Nails this time. But she knows she has to do it.
The Nails accumulate very quickly, one for each person he loves, not only for YXW. It makes her feel even worse but at the same time she thinks he’ll be fine after she dies because he has more people he cares for (spoiler: he won’t be fine).
XLH realizes around that time that YXW is actually the LSS she’s been looking for and wonders why the girl doesn’t have a destiny book. (it will be found later on that LSS is yet to be born from the egg in that time so her destiny book has not appeared yet)
She also figures out LSS is trying to build an immortal essence with the help of the WOJade and tries to stop her, only for LSS to break down and tell her everything (this is supposed to be a very heartfelt scene as it’s the first time LSS opens up with her troubles to someone and XLH has become the perfect mom figure LSS never had).
The relationship between TTJ and Xiao Lin is rather different due to them being actual friends and not copycat-prisoner/copied-princeling. As such, they manage to end the war by pretending XL has been captured so the king of Shang would have to give up and end the bloodshed. Bingchang doesn’t get the memo and turns her back to her husband anyway. Xiwu, who did get the memo (and also remembers YBC tried to kill her and TTJ, plus killed the Grandma), stays out of it and keeps the focus on her mission, not pleading for Bingchang in the slightest (XL does, the poor fool. He gets himself killed for it, because he accidentally eats food Bingchang poisoned. She stabs herself in despair -which provides both the blood of the enemy and tears of lover. Yes, I love a good mirror situation and I hate her. This time she stays dead).
Hence the kingdoms are united because there are no heirs to Shang left (the stupid king tried to send his useless other sons to war and got them killed, lol).
Also! Pian Ran gets her love threads back sooner. And she doesn’t die, but still sacrifices a few of her tails for YQY when a rebellion strikes and he gets wounded, so they’re both immortal and get a happy ending, no I don’t take criticism here, this is how it should have been.
LSS still has to sacrifice herself to switch the Immortal Essence with the Evil Bone - even if she promised XLH she wouldn’t do it and wait until the Goddess of Xishan can find another way - because the Barren Abyss is about to be opened.
TTJ doesn’t go as mad as he did in canon upon her death, but he still tries to kill himself out of grief. He even begs DFQC to teach him how to make the 500 years dream. Eventually, Nian Baiyu tells him about the Nether River and TTJ sets off without telling his family.
I still have to decide whether they catch him in time or not, and if they do, if they can convince him to give up and stay with them, or he convinces them he has to do it and tells them they’ll see each other in 500 years and jumps in anyway.
Time skip to the Immortal Sect arc! Or not.
Actually, I don’t have many ideas for it yet because I’m waiting for the drama to end, but here there’s more than enough to work with so far, so I’ll make another post with the second part + eventual additions next week after the ending.
