18 years. That’s how long it’s been. For many of us, we think about that day and we are right back where we were that moment. That moment we saw it on tv or saw it firsthand. We didn’t have to be there to hear the screams and fear. We heard it in the voices of the television reporters, the collective gasps of those we were in the room with, the panicked voices of co-workers, classmates, friends, and family desperately trying to find someone who could give them information on loved ones who worked in or near those buildings or who were suppose to be flying that day. We felt it ourselves for each person we saw running, each person we knew weren’t going home, and each person that was missing. We weren’t just a nation united or a world united at that moment, and for the days to come. We were all a family, blood or not, and we mourned each person like they were, and continue to every year on this day. We support those who were there and lived and those that personally lost someone that day. We honor those affected and changed the course of their lives because of that day. Not only is today a day of remembrance, but it’s a day of service, to honor each and every one of us, whether we made it to September 12th or not, because it was a day we never wanted to have to live through, and it’s a day we never want to have to live through again. According to veterinarians, many of the service dogs involved in the search were stressed and depressed due to the fact that instead of living people, only corpses were found.
