なんでもない日常とアートの結節点としての食事の場

生きていくためにもっとも重要なもののひとつに食事がある。食事は日々のなんでもない営みなんだけれども、必要不可欠なものだ。そのルーティンとしての食事をもう一度新鮮な視点で捉えなおし、日常を楽しく実践するためのツールとして、そこに潜むクリエイティビティを発見し再考しようというのがキッチン2.0の試みとして非常に重要なものであると思う。

現代美術においてもこの20年ほどで、観客とのコミュニケーションを重視したり、人と人との関係や日常のありかた自体をテーマとするリレーショナルアートなどと呼ばれる活動が様々なアーティストにより作品やプロジェクトとして提示されてきた。そんなリレーショナルアートの第一人者のひとりとされるリクリット・ティラバーニャは「食事とそれにまつわる関係性」をアートのなかに持ち込んだ作家だ。

彼はアルゼンチン生まれのタイ人で、外交官の父のもと様々な異なった環境の国々で少年時代を過ごした。そのため、海外にいれば外人であると感じ、タイに戻ってもそこでの生活経験もほとんどない外国人であった。なので彼は特定の場所への愛着心はほとんどなく、逆にどこにいても料理や食事などを介した人との出会いや会話など、普通の日常生活で誰もが経験することにもっとも本質的な関係を見出していた。

そこで彼はタイ風焼きそばパッタイを振る舞うプロジェクト《パッタイ》や、タイカレーを観客にサービスするなどを、アート作品を展示するギャラリーで料理をつくって振る舞いみんなで食事をすることをパフォーマンスとして実践したのだ。それによって、彼は普通の人々の日常にある食事を通じたなんでもないけれども必要不可欠なコミュニケーションの本質性を照射し、人間の日常的な行為をもう一度見つめなおし再考する手法を鮮やかに提示したのだ。

あたりまえの日常をちょっとだけ異なった視点で眺めてみることにより、本質的な関係性を見出すことができたり、あるいは他人の価値観や思考の多様性を認められないことにより地球上で日々発生している様々な問題を解決する糸口を提示できるかもしれないのだ。キッチンで引き起こされるちょっとした会話から、豊かな生活のあり方が模索できるならば、そんなに素敵なことはないだろう。まさに「日常の創造的な実践」としてのキッチン2.0である。

A place of meal as a connecting spot of everyday life and art

Meal is one of the most essential things for living. A meal is just ordinary activities in everyday life but it is essential. Investigating meals as our routine activity with fresh perspective on it, Kitchen 2.0 attempts to rethink creativity hiding in such routine with a meal as a tool which makes our routine joyful.

In the last 20 years of contemporary arts, artwork and projects by various artists have been presented that were categorized relational art which focuses on situation of everyday life and relationships between people with emphasis on communication with audience. One of the pioneers of such relational art is Rirkrit Tiravanija who brought an idea about “relationships about meal and relational art”. He is Thai born in Argentinea who spent his youth in variety of environments in different countries under his father, a diplomat. Because of that, he felt himself a foreigner while he is abroad and even when he returned to Thailand he was a foreigner who hasn’t had much experience there. So, he doesn’t have much specific attachment to any particular place and that’s is the reason why he found the most fundamental relationship in experiencing ordinary days such as encounters and conversation with cooking and meals.

So, he carried out “pattai”, a project to offer you Thai grilled noodles and Thai curry as artwork in gallery and demonstrate to eat them together as a performance. Because of this, he suggested a method to re-investigate our everyday activities by exposing fundamental quality of essential communication even though they are ordinary meals in our everyday by ordinary people.

By looking at ordinary activities in everyday life with a different perspective, you may be able too find fundamental relationships and may be able to suggest hits for solutions against a variety of problems that takes place everyday on earth because of disagreement of values and diversities of other people. If we can explore rich life from conversations in a kitchen it would be a wonderful thing. This is very much the Kitchen 2.0 as “creative demonstration in everyday life”.
