Despite the somewhat obnoxious bottle, Jean-Charles Boisset “Passion” was really a nice and fitting NYE drink. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. Complex nose of black fruit, tobacco, petrol and eucalyptus. On the palate, this was really enjoyable. Bright ripe fruit, vanilla, tobacco, leather, cloves, and a good dose of “classy” oak, all meld together in a smooth and lush package, but with nice complexity and a long finish. Nose of dark sweet fruit and flowers with some alcohol which blows off. On the palate this is surprisingly elegant, and balanced at this stage. The texture of this is insanely silky and seamless. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics, but have to think the cab franc plays a nice supporting role adding to the spicy complexity. Nose is consistently wonderful, with earth, tar and roses notes that linger. Tasting this day one, it felt as if all the fruit had faded and all that was left was an austere earthy, leathery wine with a relatively short finish and plenty of remaining acidity and fine tannins. Day two this wine was another story- tart cherry, earth, tar, and leather all opened up to became more integrated, balanced and much more complex. The finish was long and elegant. This has the acidity and structure to continue to age well. In Florida for thanksgiving, this paired wonderfully with short rib. Amazing concentrated brambly red and black fruit, transition quickly to chocolate, garrigue, spice, tobacco, and mouth coating chewy tannins in this perfectly aged and complex bottle. The finish lasts for minutes and the nose is intoxicating, keeping you coming back for sip after sip. This is a bit rustic for sure, but so unique and tasty.
