Caleb returning the forehead kiss and combing back Molly's hair when he's gone is just so gutting, because Molly was always the very tactile and openly affectionate one. Because early in the campaign Caleb was always so touch-starved, very hesitant to both accept and initiate any sort of physical intimacy. And then by the end, he gives it to Molly so freely. A last moment of warmth and comfort and tenderness, and Mollymauk can't even feel it.
Is it for Molly, or is it for him? "And as the light fades, the body is restored. The wounds are cleaned...but the spirit did not return." "He's lifeless." "He is." But Caleb still tries to comfort him anyway, after all his magic just isn't enough, after his Transmuter's Stone is shattered and all he can do is choke back tears and tell Yasha, "I-I tried..." He still wants to give him a kiss goodbye.

Aruru (Hakuno, Gilgamesh)
“My love!”
“My king!”
“Powerful and almighty king Gilgamesh!”
The women were clinging to his skirts, their hands pawing at the laughing man. He laughed with them, running his hands over their shoulders and down their backs. The women were beautiful, she couldn’t blame him for doing that. In his position, she probably would have done the same, taking no time to pull one close just as he did now, pressing his lips to theirs.
Siduri was grumbling nearby.
The clay being was gone for the night, off to the temples for a tumbling in the bedsheets. The being had caught sight of new women being brought to the kingdom and had decided to take a few for a ride while the king enjoyed the innocence of a few women. He had two new wives, after all.
There were small footsteps coming behind her.
Hakuno grabbed the little girl before she rushed into the room, pulling her back.
“Ummum!”
“Shhhh, the king is busy.”
The girl’s eyes drifted over to the man, frowning as he moved from one woman to another, all but shoving the woman he’d been kissing aside.
“Come along. You should be in bed. We’re going to be training tomorrow, remember?”
She had to pull the girl alongside her, getting away before anyone would notice the blonde roots in the girl’s hair. They couldn’t risk too much, considering that she had been cast aside because she was incapable of doing what was needed for a wife.
“Ummum,” the girl murmured again.
“We’re going to bed,” Hakuno murmured again. “What happened to the hair pigment I put in your hair?”
The girl looked down, hesitating a bit before she shook her head.
“Tell me what happened.”
“I just…” The girl pulled her hair into her hands, staring at the length of muddy brown with her lip curled. “Can we stop doing that? No one else does it.”
“We’ll think about it after both of us finish training.”
The two of them were progressing well, especially her baby girl. It had been only half a year now. She had needed to hide the girl away from the king for seven years now, returning quietly to the palace and simply bowing her head and requesting for the magic training for herself while the king was drunk.
It had been an awkward night, one she had been able to manage only because of a slip of the hand into the king’s drink.
She had given up on being important in the same way the king was important to her. She had focused on her baby. Her girl.
Aruru.
“Ummum,” Aruru looked up at her, red eyes gleaming quietly as she held her hair close. “Can I please talk to the king? Just for a minute? Two?”
“Then we will have to stop learning magic.”
The girl sighed, lowering her hands. She shook her head, moving back towards their room. It was away from the others for a reason, placed near a couple of the storage rooms that Hakuno had found upon her return.
No one had batted an eye at her. Siduri had smiled and welcomed her back quietly, allowing her to have some bolts of fabric.
The fabrics had made a splendid set of robes for Aruru. She had adorned the girl quietly in some jewelry she had, gifts from the king. They suited Aruru far more than they did her and Aruru had glowed the moment she had decided to dress her up.
Even now, scooting to their bedroom door and going inside the room, Aruru seemed much more comfortable than she had ever been in the inn she had worked in before. The girl had been an endless sobbing mess from the moment she had been born. Much like the king, she had needed things to be her way. She had needed her creature comforts and her valuables.
Now that she had them, she looked for something that she could not give: a father figure.
“Did you practice the plant revival practices that we learned yesterday, Aruru?” Hakuno asked, closing the door to the room and watching Aruru climbing into their bed.
“Yes, ummum.”
“And?”
“The flowers are in the vase in the corner.”
She delved back under the covers, covering her head in the blankets.
Sure enough, her blooms were bright and bold in the corner, gleaming and humming with energy. It was exciting to see how she was improving, becoming more and more comfortable with the mage that she was. Soon she would be able to do so much more. They both would.
“You aren’t missing anything,” Hakuno told her. “The king is selfish. You have seen him with many possible ummums.”
“I know…”
Hakuno stroked the girl’s back, watching the little one poke her head out from the covers.
“…I don’t mean to ask so much, ummum.”
“You do, but I understand why. We’ll leave right after we finish learning. We’ll go on an adventure, I promise.”
Aruru looked around a moment before she gave a small pout. “…Can I just… just for tonight! Can I take this pigment out of my hair and have you braid it like when I was little?”
“You’re still little!”
“Please? Please please please?!”
Hakuno sighed, nodding.
The moment it was done, the girl had her set of portals open, moving the water basin in the corner over to them and all but dunking her head into the basin. She had the color out in record time.
Eager as ever, obviously. Hakuno shook her head, setting the basin on the floor nearby and using a simple spurt of energy to get the strands of hair dry. She took the length into hand, beginning from the top.
“I love when you do my hair,” Aruru told her.
“I know you do.”
“I like it here too. I like the food and the decorations and the gardens!”
“I know.” Hakuno laughed a little. “I’m aware. You tell me that every day.”
“Nuh uh!”
She was right. She told her that multiple times every day. There was no use in pointing that out either, knowing the girl would just argue and take her in verbal circles until they both grew tired. She had a way of making her want to agree as well.
She would be a strong adult.
“Ummum?” Aruru looked over her shoulder as she made it to the end of the braid, tying it into place with a bit of ribbon.
“Yes, Aruru?”
“Ki merangen.”
Hakuno smiled, pressing her lips to the girl’s forehead. “I love you too, Aruru.”
She turned pink, shuffling in the blankets a bit before she launched herself at her. They both fell to the cushions, laughing a little as Aruru snuggled against her chest.
“I’m the best princess in the whole universe, aren’t I?”
“You are my princess,” Hakuno told her simply, earning a large, childish smile like her father’s own.
“I am the best. I’ll be the strongest magician soon too… but it’s okay because I’ll make sure to let you assist me.”
“Ah, in that case-“ Hakuno pressed her lips to the girls cheeks, drowning her in a smothering of kisses that had her squealing and waving her arms in embarrassment.
“UMMUM! UMMUM! TOO MUCH! TOO MUCH!”
“I have to make sure my princess magician knows that she is loved, don’t I?” Hakuno pointed out. “That means lots of attention.”
Those red eyes gleamed, only for a moment. Then she delved beneath the sheets, trying to escape.
The little fool.
“We need to sleep,” Hakuno pointed out again.
“One story.”
She couldn’t help the sigh that escaped her lips.
It was never just one story.

Tumblr media
I sat on the tour bus as the guys were in the venue, doing their thing that they do every night. I would have usually been on the sidelines, watching my four best friends achieve their dream, but I wasn’t feeling very well ever since this morning. I had laid in Ashton’s bunk for about an hour, tossing and turning as I tried to sleep the terrible feeling away, but it didn’t work. So now, I’m sitting at the table in the kitchen/living room area, playing with a set of cards.
Soft quiet music played on my phone, resting my head against my arm as I turned another card over, sighing slightly as it wasn’t the one I needed. I heard a bunch of screams, quickly sitting up straight as the door to the tour bus opened, four sweaty boys walking inside as they were laughing and waving at fans. A smile immediately came to my lips, always loving how they adored the fans, leaning my chin against the palm of my hand as Calum turned around, noticing me at the table.
“Hey, where were you?” The bassist asked and I was about to speak when Ashton cut him off.
“She wasn’t feeling well. She told me she would be resting,” Ash answered, raising his eyebrows at me as I bit my lip softly, giving him a small smile.
“I tried, but I couldn’t get to sleep,” I explained as Luke and Ashton sat across from me, the blonde sitting right in front of me. Luke leaned over, pressing the back of his hand against my forehead, checking my temperature as I smiled sheepishly at the young teen.
“You feel a bit warm, but not warm enough where you have a fever,” Luke frowned, sitting back down in his spot as Ashton looked over at me, an indescribable look on his face as I gave both boys another small smile, letting them know I was alright… well kinda.
“Guys, I’m fine. How about we play some cards?” I asked and Michael immediately declined, heading towards the back. I laughed a bit at how quickly he answered, looking to the other boys as they shrugged.
“Yeah, I’m down. Let me just shower real quick,” Ash mumbled, getting up from his seat as he walked towards his bunk, getting off my seat to follow as well.
“Hey, you okay?” I asked, leaning against the bunks next to him as he dug through his bag, finding some clothes to put on after his shower.
“Hm? Yeah, I’m fine,” he muttered, running a hand through his sweaty hair and I could tell he was lying.
“Ash…” I trailed off, laying a hand on his arm as his hazel eyes glanced towards me. “You know we’ve been friends for almost a decade, I can tell when something’s bothering you.” Ashton frowned, nodding his head as he pulled me into his chest, softly rubbing my back.
“I’m just… I’m not gonna lie to you, Y/N/N. You’re like my good luck charm at concerts and tonight I felt like I messed something up while drumming. It’s been bugging me ever since,” Ashton sighed, resting his chin on the top of my head.
I slipped out from his grip, raising my hand to run my fingers through his sweaty locks, giving him a grin. “Ash, let me be honest with you now. You’re the best goddamn drummer I know. I’m sure you did great without me being there. Even if you did mess up, who cares? Your fans still adore you so fucking much,” I told him, the hand that ran through his hair resting at the base of his neck. The drummer’s eyes widened a bit, lips parted as he was surprised those words came out of my lips.
“You’re amazing, you know that?” Ashton asked, his large hand wrapping around my dainty wrist as I smirked, shrugging my shoulders.
“I’ve been told that yeah.”
“Well, you are. I’m reminding you again. I’m gonna take a quick shower then we can play cards. Spades, right?” He asked and I nodded excitingly.
“Of course! You’re gonna be my partner right?” I asked, grinning up at the cute Australian. Ashton nodded his head, leaning down to place his lips on my cheek before grabbing a towel, heading towards the bathroom.
“You bet your sweet ass I am.”
“Alright,” I spoke, sitting down in front of Luke as Calum slid into the spot next to me, both boys looking at me. “You guys know how to play spades, yes?” I asked, taking the two of hearts and diamonds out of the deck, replacing them with the big joker and the little joker.
“Yeah, I take it Calum and I are partners by the way we’re all seated?” Luke questioned and I grinned at the blonde boy.
“Yup, that would be a true fact,” I laughed, shuffling the cards together before dealing them out to the boys.
“First-hand bids themselves, gentlemen and lady,” Ash smirked, looking towards me as I could feel my cheeks heat up. I sorted my cards, my eyes looking towards Luke as he placed down the first card. Ace of hearts.
“Startin’ off big aren’t we, Lukey?” I giggled, watching as everyone threw a low card, throwing down a low card as well. Luke just smirked at me, picking up his and Calum’s book, placing it next to him.
“Well, might as well get as many as we can. You guys are way too good at this damn game,” he laughed, throwing down a low club. My eyes looked over at Ash as he were already on me. He gave me a cheeky wink before throwing down the ace of clubs.
Calum groaned from beside me as he threw down a king of clubs, knowing that it’s his lowest card. I threw down a shit club, having Ashton collect our books as he gave me a high five.
Luke and Calum were ahead of us in points, but only by like thirty. I nibbled on my bottom lip, looking towards Ash as he was counting his bids. “Are you a magician? Because whenever I look at you everyone else disappears.” Ashton grinned at me, causing me to furrow my eyebrows together in confusion, looking at Cal and Luke who just shook their heads.
“U-Uh, what?” I stuttered, my cheeks blushing as Ashton chuckled, holding up three of his fingers. I gulped, nodding my head as my stomach churned, wondering why he just used a pickup line on me. “O-Okay, we’re going six.”
“Flustered, Y/N?” Calum asked and I glanced up at the Kiwi boy, seeing the smirk on his lips as I turned my head away from him, shaking my head in reply. Lie.
“I think she is Cal,” Luke grinned, holding his cards close to his face as I narrowed my eyes at the two boys.
“Shut up,” I muttered, my cheeks red as a tomato as I looked towards Ashton who had a silly grin on his lips.
“Y/N, you’re absolutely adorable when you blush,” the drummer pointed out and I hid my face in my hands, getting way too embarrassed, needing air.
“Cal, Luke, you guys win,” I mumbled, maneuvering around Calum before going into the back of the tour bus where Michael was, letting out a breath. Holy shit. What’s going on with Ash?
“Y/N?” I heard Michael’s voice as he looked up at me from the couch he was sitting on. “You okay?” He asked and I ran my fingers through my hair, shrugging my shoulders as I sat down beside him.
“I-I don’t know. A-Ashton, he uh, he told me this pickup line and I’m just very confused,” I mumbled, looking towards the red-haired boy. Michael’s eyes widened, looking back out towards where the guys are, seeing Ashton himself walking back here.
“I’ll leave you guys alone,” Mikey mumbled, leaving the room. I licked my lips, standing up in front of Ashton as he looked to be a bit nervous.
“Your lips look so lonely…Would they like to meet mine?” Ashton asked, my eyes widening, lips moving to form some sort of answer when he spoke again. “You must be a hell of a thief because you stole my heart from across the room.”
My heart clenched, swallowing thickly as he smiled down at me. “What’s with the cheesy pickup lines?” I asked, not wanting to get my hopes up about him having feelings for me.
Ashton grabbed my hand, lacing our fingers together as my breath hitches in my throat. He stepped closer to me, our bodies inches apart as his index finger lifted my chin up. “You mean everything to me…” he whispered, leaning his forehead against mine as my eyes slowly fluttered shut, gripping his shirt in my hand.
“A-Ashton,” I stuttered quietly, feeling my heart pounding against my chest. “This isn’t some sick joke is it?” I asked in a whisper, opening my eyes to glance up at him through my lashes.
He shook his head immediately. “No, no, of course not,” Ashton muttered, resting his free hand on my cheek, his thumb softly rubbing my cheekbone. “I’ve liked you for so long. Hell, I’m probably in love with you.”
My breath hitches again, staring up at the hazel-eyed boy, both his hands moving to my hips as my grip on his shirt loosened, trailing my hands up bid chest and around his neck. “I-I love you,” I mumbled, butterflies flying around in my stomach as he grinned down at me.
“Can I… can I kiss you?” He asked and I nodded my head, my fingers dipping into his hair. Ashton tilted his head to the side, leaning down to close the gap between us. My eyes fluttered shut, feeling his lips press against mine. It felt like my heart was going to explode as I moved my lips against his, our chests were pressed against each other’s as one of his large hands dipped under my shirt.
I pulled away from him, needing to breathe as I was panting slightly. His lips connected with my forehead, a large grin appearing on my lips. “Can I sleep with you tonight?” I asked, biting my lip softly as his eyes widened, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat as he nodded.
“Y-Yeah, come on,” Ashton muttered, taking my hand in his before leading me towards his bunk, allowing me to get in first. Once we got situated, my back was facing Ash as his arms wrapped around my waist.
I could feel his breath but the back of my neck, his fingers drawing shapes on the bare skin of my side. I pushed my ass back against him, getting more comfortable as I heard him groan, tightening his grip on my side. My eyes widened as I felt his semi-hard member pressed against me. “Are you seriously horny right now?” I asked, looking back at him as I noticed his cheeks dusted pink, clearing his throat.
“How can I not be when your ass is pressed up against me!?” He asked, feeling the back of his hand against my behind as he adjusted himself in his sweats. I bit my lip, turning around so I was facing him, laying my head on his chest.
“Sorry. I didn’t know I had that kind of effect on you,” I mumbled, pressing my lips together in a thin line. Ashton’s hand rubbed my back gently, sending shivers down my spine. “But, I’m glad I do.”
“Yeah, yeah. Hush, gorgeous,” Ashton chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. I nuzzled my face into his neck, nice to actually be able to cuddle with someone I’ve been in love with for seven years.
“I love you,” I mumbled tiredly, feeling my eyes slowly droop shut.
“I love you too, Y/N,” Ashton whispers, pulling me closer to his body.

Bird Brained- Chapter 5
Show your support by reading the next chapters on Wattpad!"I am inviting a suitor to come stay with us for a couple of days before your coronation." Arthula had cornered her son in the library to give him this information. He frowned closing his book. "Why.. I said I wanted to find someone on my own."
Arthula shrugged "Because at the very least he could be someone you can form a friendship with.. we both know how uncomfortable you are during public events." She watched him feed the crow a peanut "Lekan.. I think he is someone you could like."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well he matches your criteria.. for starters.. he's very handsome.. he's half fae.." she blathered on about how wonderful she felt this suitor was for her son. Lekan did not look impressed. She finally handed him a letter. "At least talk to him.. you never know.." Lekan sighed taking the paper and waving his mother off. "Alright Fine.. now if you would please I'm trying to read." She laughed leaving him to his personal time.
This information put Maze in a difficult position. He didn't know this suitor she had picked and hoped he wouldn't be.. difficult.
—-
"It's going to be weird if I just show up out of the blue right?"
"Well are you going to back down?"
"No but.. what do I say?"
Lulit paused tapping her chin.
"Say that you saw a letter your sister got and found him charming so you came to visit in her place!"
"I don't have a sister."
Lulit frowned. "Oh... um right sorry.. what if.. you just showed up.. in need of assistance." She grinned with an evil smirk. "Oh! We could beat you up and have you burst into the castle all 'help please! I was taken by bandits and I'm finally free!'" She threw an arm over her forehead dramatically falling back on the couch. Maze snorted.
"Thats too much it doesn't flow well with my 'I got lost' backstory which we've agreed is totally solid."
She huffed "Well... you got any better ideas?"
He scratched his chin.
"I'll say... I left to go see the world, and was sent here on a vision from.. a witch."
"You can't bash witches and then use them as your scapegoat you cuck."
"She said I must turn to the capital city and find the love of my life... the man with.." he waved his hands in the air. "How would a witch describe Lekan?"
"The man with a heart lead by his brain and a dick made of bad yeast?"
"That's.. really weird. Why would anyone say that."
"Cause bad yeast doesn't ri -"
"Stop.. talking about yeast."
She cackled as he stewed in his frustrated with the exchange.
They eventually formulated a partial plan that Lulit took minimal issue with. They did need to time it right. At Lulit's request they waited. Two weeks, then three then with an unceremonious snatching of the crow early one morning. They set the plan in motion.
"I talked to the palace doctor.. she has agreed to help us.." Maze cocked his head.
"What's changed?"
"The suitor is arriving in three days."
He was surprised by that "What.. does... Lekan actually really like this guy or something?" Had they waited too long?
Lulit shook her head "My mother changed the dates.. she's inviting him here earlier to the palace so that he and Lekan can get to know each other better. He hates parties.. she's trying to get him to enjoy it more by having someone he can be close to attend with him." She grinned "But you are going to crash that party."
"The coronation party?"
"No.. the hospitality party"
"Elaborate."
She shook her head "Just turn back.. I'll explain it later" he did as she asked and the magician lifted him gingerly heading down to the infirmary.
--
The doctor greeted them bemused by the crow held placant in Lulits hands. "Oh.. is this my patient?" She asked laughing "Lulit you know I'm not a vet.."
"Yea I'll get to that.. Maze this is Doctor Lupet she's going to help us" Lupet watched growing more concerned.
"Did you hit your head again.. that is a crow."
"Not really" She set Maze on the ground.
The look on the poor clerics face when the bird transformed into a full sized human was nothing short of comedic gold. She fairly fell out of the chair gasping "L...Lulit.."
"It's okay... we're friends."
"Kinda" Maze chimed in.
"Kinda... we have a common goal."
Lupet stood edging herself against the wall "and what.. goal would that be?"
"He.. well.. needs to be a person again.."
Maze nodded "She doesn't like that I'm a crow"
The woman tapped her chin considering it before pulling Lulit aside "Isn't he a little.. old for you.. He's like twenty-five.."
The girl balked. "Ew no not for me.. for Lekan.."
She nodded "Oh.. is Lekan.."
"Yea.. I guess men are more his thing"
"Well.." she sighed "I'll bite.. what do you need from me.."
"We need you to falsify medical records"
".. I have strong moral obligations insisting that I not do that."
"But.. it's for love"
"Yes I've heard that before but it won't help you.."
Maze cleared his throat "The court thinks me dead because of my.. condition.. I'm ready to come back.."
The woman sighed. "What exactly do you need me to falsify?"
"When he returns.. we just need you to say he has a broken.. arm?"
"Yeah arms good.."
"Okay a broken arm.. and maybe ribs"
"Ribs might be too much"
"It will keep you here longer"
He couldn't argue with that.
The cleric nodded "well... I guess that won't hurt anyone..."
The conniving pair grinned.
The stage was set. In three days the suitor would arrive and Maze would begin his return to the land of the living.
The four members of the S'Trigi family sat in their respective seats along the wall of the Great Hall waiting for their guest to arrive. Maze made sure to perch himself on Lekans shoulder despite his mother's insistence that the bird not be part of the welcoming.
"I can't make him leave.. he's a crow.. he does what he wants"
Yeah Maze did what he wanted. What he wanted to do was get a good look at this would be sutor and find a way to outdo him.
The speaker opened the great doors and took his position to the right of them announcing their guest. "I present Ulyss Motomgo of Lynachee. The Stone that splits the Falls." A man descended the stairs garbed in the long shimmering clothing worn by the fae. His dark hair was cropped short, and his defining ears ended in sharp tips, riddled with small stones and rings. "Son of Isidian Motomgo of Capital, the Western seed and Ambassador Mariela LeBonon of the Region of the Eastern Forest."
Wait.. Maze knew this guy. Motomgo had been his boarding school roommate. It took him a minute but yeah.. Ulyss and him had shared many a night under the same sheets in the lonely boarding school life. Causing more trouble than they were worth. The kinship between them only ended when Ulyss had traveled to the Eastern region to study the ways of the fae.
Oh this would be perfect. If it had been any old suitor Maze would have worried that they might steal Lekans heart and turn the man against him. However Maze knew Ulyss to be honorable and quite a prude outside of the bedroom. This was perfect.
Ulyss bowed deeply before the royal family. Arthula stood greeting the man "Welcome to our home Ulyss. We hope that you will find our hospitality measurable and your time here enjoyable."
The Fae man smiled politely "I thank you for the warm welcome. It feels good to return to Capital, and I am honored to be invited to stay beneath your roof." Arthula patted Lekans shoulder encouraging the man to introduce himself.
"The honor is all ours.. I am Olamilekan S'Trigi, King of the Summer Morning. You may call me Lekan." He held out a hand to shake which Ulyss took before kissing the back softly.
"A pleasure to meet you,"
Maze ruffled himself up snapping his beak in warning. Ulyss glanced at the bird "What a funny little body guard you have there.." Lekan withdrew his hand his cheeks growing hot.
"Oh.. yes.. He follows me around.. You don't need to pay him any mind." Ulyss shrugged
"Crows are intelligent birds.. The Fae hold crows in high regard... although with them usually follows despair." He said it casually like he wasn't implying Maze was more of an unfortunate pest.
Lekan went about the day showing Ulyss around the halls of the castle dodging the man's thinly veiled attempts to flirt with him like a professional.
"Have you lived in Capital long" Ulyss questioned the prince. The two had wandered up into the postern of the wall surrounding the castle. They surveyed the valley below them.
"Yes almost my entire life.."
"You were quite young when your parents were elected to court weren't you?"
"Around five or so.." "So young.. I bet you've had plenty of interactions with potential suitors before me. I am honored to be invited here."
Lekan shook his head sternly "I.. don't know if I'd call anyone who has gotten close enough to me to be a suitor.." he cleared his throat. "I'm not used to this type of engagement." "One of love?" "One set up for me." He tuned that out immediately. "I don't know if love like that is something I have really known."
Ulyss laughed "oh.. You sweet innocent man.. At your age I'm surprised to hear that."
Lekans face heated at the comment "I.. Just am not used to.." "Being wooed?" Ulyss took his hand. "I'll be gentle.." "I'm not concerned about you being rough. I am concerned that you will overstep your bounds. As many have before you."
"Are you afraid of physical intimacy?"
"Don't.. say it like that.. I just know what I want.." "Are you sure?"
Lekan didn't answer moving the conversation onto something else. Maze found the display hard to watch and took himself from the tense and awkward interaction the second he could. Lekan wasn't into Ulyss and that was fine by him.
--
Lekan attempted to sneak out of the palace early the next morning. Unfortunately for him, Ulyss caught him just as he was leaving,
"Your grace"
He internally cursed his luck turning to face the would be suitor. "Good morning Ulyss"
The fae man smiled "Why the hurry?" .
"Just going for a walk." The crow at his shoulder ruffled its feathers preening itself.
"Oh! Mind if I join you.."
"Well.. I.."
"Your highness, you shouldn't leave the palace without us.." Lonan and Ruit approached the two of them.
"I would be happy to accompany the prince." Ulyss offered, glancing at the bodyguards with distaste.
"His bodyguards also need to go.." Lonan yawned rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Her Majesty's orders."
Both the prince and his suitor resented that, but conceded.
"I don't usually take horses up the trails.. I'm not a good rider" he admitted climbing into the beasts back as the rest of the group readied themselves. The crow at his shoulder departed. It seemed he did not want this steed. Now Lekan was alone with the three strangers. His discomfort was at a maximum level.
"I can lead if that makes you feel better." The knight swung his horse to the front of the line. "Ruit you take the back" the squire was already in place knowing his duty well.
They set off for the foothills of the Great Divide at a slow pace, Ulyss picking up casual conversation as they went.
"The forests of the east are a sight to behold.. I would be keen to show you them."
"I hope to do so one day."
"As Head of House you would be greeted with the highest regard."
"I would hope so. The peaceful nature of our relationship with the east is critical to the state of our lands."
"They would feel the same way, with the Daru trying to stir up something every couple of months it's a pleasant change to have an ally in the west to protect us."
He found Ulyss's drowning to be monotonous. Talking about the east like a fanatic. Though he had lived there he probably only experienced the beautiful Capital tree and none of their other lesser states. Lekan knew the region to be on the verge of civil war due to their queens negligence.
They entered a ravine where the path became treacherous and steep. Lekan didn't like taking horses along this path for the uneven footing could throw a rider from his saddle easily.
The sound of rocks sliding down the side caught the party's attention. Lonan stopped the parade and climbed down from his mount peering over the edge. "Oh.. some daft fool has fallen."
Lekan jumped from his own saddle in a panic.
"Does anyone have any rope?" "The poor bastard looks to be dead already."
"And what if he's not?"
Lonan shrugged "It would be suicide to try and rescue him."
Lekan didn't listen rifling through his knapsack and finding a length of rope which he handed to Lonan wrapping the rest around himself "Then don't let me fall."
"Your highness.. I implore you."
He carefully climbed down to the far ledge where a body lay sprawled out over the dirt. A dark cloak covering the form.
"Sir! This is incredibly dangerous! I beg of you don't.."
He landed on the ledge approaching the man carefully. "Are you alright.. Did you fall." he pushed back the hood of the cloak and found to his shock.
The stranger from his room.
Unconscious and wheezing the man was covered in scrapes and bruises. Despite that the prince recognized the man immediately and lifted him with ease over his shoulder "He's still alive, pull me up."
The three men on the ledge complied, lifting the added dead weight over the ledge of the ravine. Lekan mounted his horse holding the injured man carefully. "We have to go back.. He needs to see the cleric."
Ulyss looked into the face of the man frowning. "Wait.. I know him.." he touched the torn and beaten fabric of his ornate feathered cloak.
"Who is he?"
Ulyss shook his head. "Thought for dead.." the look in his eye seemed almost hopeful. "Lets get him back.. he needs to be treated."
Well he was glad their sense of urgency had changed. Lonan held the rear as Ruit led them back the way they came.
"I don't think this is wise sir" Lonan called up to him from behind the line.
"I am not a wise man" "You are kind" Ulyss chimed in sucking up to the princes nature.
"That is the only quality I dare boast".
He sat Maze against his chest holding him upright as they went, careful not to injure him any more as they returned to the palace. Maze was glad no one was facing him to see the smile that spread over his face.
He was in.
He feigned sleep until the party managed to get him to the infirmary. Lekan knocked on the door. "Lupet.. Please.." he set the man on the bed gingerly as the cleric rushed over.
Part of her understood what Lulit and Maze's game was here, and she would play along. Lulit was a cunning and paranoid child, so if she trusted someone they were probably worth it. Lupet placed a hand to his chest "I'm going to try and wake him.. I need you to step back sir in case his reaction is violent." She'd put on a good show for them. Lekan complied moving back to stand with the Guards and Ulyss. She sent a burst of energy through Mazes body. He gasped loudly,  shock thoroughly winding him.
OW? What the hell was that for. She didn't have to resuscitate him for real. He coughed and she placed her hand there again sending another blast through him. He groaned and sat up coughing and gasping for air. He whacked her hand away "The hell..." She pushed him back down restraining him.
"You are in safe hands. You are not in any danger here."
Okay lady unnecessary. She had an unyielding grip, and he stayed down faking a heavy pant while the cleric got up to gather water and bandages.
"I will come get you when I am done..." she nodded the party off shooing them out.
Once they were gone Lupet turned back to Maze "Did you actually hurt yourself? You had me scared for a second."
He nodded sitting up "Yea just.. turned while I was in midair and fell down a ravine" He shrugged off her mortified expression. "It didn't hurt much.. although I might have actually busted my wrist.." he flexed the joint testing it "I should be fine though.." she took his hand examining it "Well.. I'll patch you up this time, but never do that again you'll get yourself killed."
"It wouldn't be the first time."
"Still knock it off.."
He shrugged as Lupet treated him.
Lekan waited outside of the room pacing as Ulyss watched "Are you going to wait here forever?" The prince shrugged "He's.. been injured I'm just concerned."
"Your concern blinds you"
"Bold statement for someone who would just let him die" Lekan shuffled his feet against the ground. "You said.. you knew him?"
Ulyss nodded looking down at his feet "An old friend... we were roommates in school before I left for the East."
"Who is he?"
Ulyss laughed "Word has spread far enough at this point that it would be hard to believe.."
"Try me.."
"Maze Suvroc.."
"Suvroc.. "
"Yea... the missing heir."
"How did he get there... his family hails from the far north?"
Ulyss shrugged. "How should I know.. I haven't seen him in... Years?" He dropped his stale demeanor for a moment "I considered us to be good friends... when you pulled him from that ravine it was like..." He waved his hand finding the right analogy "Finding bag of gold after being robbed."
"Interesting.."
"We had a complicated relationship"
"Elaborate"
He laughed "My prince.. I am your suitor, it would be highly inappropriate of me.." Lekan fought of a wave of envy as Ulyss took his hand. "Come on... let's get something to eat you look stressed.. he will be fine.. he's risen from the dead hasn't he?"
--
Lonan did not believe for a second that Maze had risen from the dead. Though he did not know Maze from a vagrant at the moment, he knew that something felt fishy. A man dressed in wealthy clothing found collapsed in a ravine auspiciously where the prince enjoyed hiking.
"It's too convenient." He paced his quarters finishing his rant to Ruit. "We need to find out who he is or who he robbed.." Ruit was invested in the book in his lap letting Lonan talk. It had been two days since Maze had been rescued. Lonan was very vocal in his distrust of the stranger and had made a point to use every opportune moment to discuss it with any available ears.
"Would be a ballsy move to try and harm the prince knowing he had a full guard at his back." Ruit refused to give Lonan his full attention turning a page slowly.
"Maybe he didn't know.. and he just faked injury to get inside the palace."
"Plenty of better ways to do that... this palace is basically open to the public. He could just waltz in if he really wanted to."
"He wants us comfortable so he can do his deed and make a quick escape."
"By showing his face to the guards and staff of the palace?"
"His little resuscitation bit didn't look odd to you?"
Well that Ruit had no explanation for.
"It did.."
"And?"
"And maybe.. you're overthinking it... didn't Ulyss say he knew the man."
"You act as if I trust that elf."
"That's rude."
"He's an elf."
"They don't like that word."
"They can suck my dick."
Ruit frowned closing his book and standing up.
"Where are you going" Lonan demanded.
"Somewhere your ignorance can't infect me"
The knight scoffed watching him go.
Ruit found the Capital palace grand and spent much of his free time admiring the structure and its amenities. The towers looming over beautifully kept gardens, spilling out between the protective outer walls of the palace. Wandering through the garden path brought him to the keep where the great hall resided. Staff were busy preparing the hall for dinner that evening, setting the long table with plates and cutlery.
Off to the side, hallways with tall open windows showed off the gardens glory. Unlike the royal family nothing about the palace was humbling. Golden embroidered intricacies coated every inch of the palace bordering on gaudy in fashion. Every fabric was the finest silk and glass of the stained variety filled every unopened window. The palace was a cornucopia of light and color. It might move one to tears with its intense beauty.
He took purchase in an open windowsill attempting to read again.
"Ruit.." Come on really. He looked up to see Lekan approaching him.
"Your highness" He stood and bowed.
"What are you reading?" He approached the squire casually.
The man showed him a book of lore. "Forgive me if it was impolite.. I borrowed it from the library."
Lekan smiled. "On the contrary.. books are meant to be read." he took a seat on the sill beside the other man. "How do you find the palace?"
"It's.. brilliant.. to call this palace home would be a dream."
Lekan laughed "This is now your home as well.. you know that right." The squire nodded
"It might be impolite to say that much.."
"I would not be offended" he waved a hand.
The squire nodded thanking him. Lekan took his leave heading towed the infirmary, Ruit noted, without the crow that followed in Lekans shadow. To his knowledge the bird had been missing from his interactions with the prince since the morning the stranger had been rescued.
It probably meant nothing.

Spares (GilHaku, Gilgamesh Caster, Gudao, Merlin)
He ran a hand through his hair as he heard the magician’s voice singing in the distance.
Merlin.
How long had the magician managed to get out of his hair so that he could work? An hour? Two? Each time, it felt like the magician was spending more and more time harassing him when he was trying to resolve this damned singularity. If he didn’t soon, they’d be seeing-
His eyes landed on the young man and his companion walking into the room, the woman’s shield and the insignia on the man’s chest left little to the imagination.
Chaldeans.
He moved back to his throne, sticking to the routine method of intimidating his opposition out of his throne room and palace.
They could go back and hide in their little hole while he resolved his peoples’ problems.
Merlin stood before them though, trying to quicken things though.
This wasn’t how he had perceived this encounter.
Merlin would encourage the Chaldeans and he would end up fighting them. He had seen it and that was how it was supposed to be.
The magician was waving his hands and laughing a moment before sprinting up the stairs to his throne. The audacious shit, he had a few words in mind for the idiot. He’d had enough.
“Don’t do this. Allow them to help.”
He stared at the man. “Are you out of your mind?!”
“Look, look! It’s not what we thought. They have… spares.”
Spares?
He rubbed at his head, not even wanting to ask what that meant. Knowing this man as he did already, it would mean a long spiel about how he was terribly abused. It would end with demands for more. A place in the palace, a place at his table, etc etc.
“King Gilgamesh!”
The boy was raising his voice, as though he had the authority.
“Don’t do this,” Merlin whimpered.
Too. Damn. Late.
“SILENCE!”
He glared down at the boy. “I do not believe I gave you the authority to interrupt my business in my throne room.”
The boy faltered, paling.
“I ah… forgot that you get really particular. You changed a lot after the child.”
He rubbed at his temples.
The disgrace that he was given, the boy was talking nonsense.
“Get out!”
“WAIT!” Gudao of Chaldea moved forward. “We’re here to help with the singularity! The three of us!”
Three?
Merlin shook his head, a hand pressed to his cheek as he whimpered.
“He’s outside with the spares,” Merlin murmured. “I had the guards distract them for as long as I could to warn you.”
Warn him?
“I have no need for you, Chaldeans.”
At their surprise, he smirked.
“I am clairvoyant. I see the future, the past, and all that will come to pass in any case. You are unnecessary. Although if you would like to provide your knowledge of technology, we shall accept it here in Uru-“
“ABUM!”
He stopped, watching the mop of brown hair on the small child that came scampering into the throne room. Adorned in a bold crimson set of robes and jingling bangles, she looked more the noble’s child than a stray. She was hurrying up the stairs, stumbling near the final step in a way that had him dropping immediately to his knees to stop her from tumbling back and killing herself.
A pair of his eyes stared at him as the child beamed at him.
“Ummum said there was another Abum here! Hello Abum Number Two.”
What?
The girl was wrapping her arms around him and hugging him tightly a moment before she was opening the Gates of Babylon and pulling out a plush toy.
“You’ve got to hug or kiss Enkidu too!”
Enkidu?
He stared at the strange green plush, kissing it gently.
“Ah! No. That’s not… um…” The girl blushed, looking at her toy before she hugged it close and cuddled against him more. “One for me too, please.”
Oh, what a cute little child.
He waved Siduri into action, giving himself a moment.
Children were the future of his country. He would always have a moment to spare for them. He pressed a light affection to the girl’s forehead and watched her smile grow.
“Ki murangen, Abum.”
Where was this child’s father?
The resemblance to himself was starting to be more pronounced with the longer this child was in here. She needed to be returned to her mother and taken home before-
“Gula?!”
“She’s in here!” The shield holder yelled.
A brunette came running.
There was where the hair color had come from. The same reckless gait too. He watched her run forward almost halfway to them before she caught sight of him. She was hesitating, biting her lip.
“I do believe that this young one belongs to you,” Caster told her, picking the happy, spoiled child up and carrying her over to her mother.
“Thank you,” the woman told him.
Those eyes looked at him strangely. Almost as though she thought they had something more than stranger to stranger acquaintanceship.
His eyes lingered on the jewelry and attire though, noting how his younger self would have no doubt lunged at this woman, had she lacked the child.
Taking someone else’s child was not of interest-
“HAKUNO! GULA!”
Wait.
The doors were opening.
A figure adorned in golden armor passed through the gates, looking around. The same blond hair he saw in the morning in his water basin, the same expression, the same voice and height-
The Chaldeans had his Archer self.
“Thank you, Caster,” the woman next to him told him, pulling Gula into her arms.
“Hakuno! Is she-“
“She’s fine, Gil.” Hakuno held the child up a bit, making the armored king relax.
Merlin was moving in closer.
“Quick answer: your archer self has been taking a woman nonstop in Chaldea, to a point where she had your child. She’s gotten Archer smitten, and I mean he’s really taken with her.”
He was more confused by that than he had been before he’d been given explanation.
“She’s your consort and that’s your child,” the magician tried again.
His?
The girl looked over at him and grinned against her mom’s shoulder.
Caster quickly wrapped an arm around the woman’s waist, pulling her back.
“Woman, I did not dismiss you.”
“We’re not here to fight. Gula and I just wanted to see Uruk.”
Just wanted to see Uruk.
The words echoed in his head. Had his other self simply referred to coming to Uruk as some kind of vacation? Glancing his way, Caster could see the man was already pushing forward, barely being held back by the Chaldeans.
“Gula,” Caster glanced towards the child again. A thought bubbling up amongst many others. “I do not believe your ummum has given me any greeting. I prepared a room for you both and she has ignored me for simply taking you away.”
A frown came to the girl’s face, but her mother was quick.
“You’re no different than usual,” she complained, coming closer to him.
He backstepped until reaching his throne, sitting down only to yank the two onto his lap.
“CASTER!”
He pressed his lips to the woman in his arms’ own.
Warm, sweet lips met his, the soft and gentle feel of them distracting him for a full moment.
“I see,” he murmured.
“Abum,” Gula smiled on their laps, looking around. “You sit here when you help people?”
“I do. In fact, why don’t you tell your Chaldean companions that they are staying where Siduri will place them, outside the palace?”
Those red eyes flickered to him. “W-would that be okay?”
She was asking permission.
What a great child.
He could already see that his Archer self was seething.
“You may also tell Siduri to place them in the brewery near the artisan district.”
Gula was eager, carefully articulating his point while he glanced to the woman who had brought her forth. The long hair was pleasant. The eyes and hair color… he wasn’t sure his thoughts on Cedar Forest brown, but it was growing on him.
Then she gave him a droll look.
His heart seemed to stutter at the very gaze.
“Y-your name is Hakuno, did I hear correctly?” he murmured.
“It is.”
“And your child is the result of being with my Archer form?”
She nodded.
Then this would be quite entertaining then.
“Chaldeans!”
They were all looking over, having begun to argue with Siduri about helping while their hands kept Archer back. At his addressing them, they paused.
“You may begin your assisting in the morning with Archer as your lead,” he told them. “Since you have so graciously left Gula and Hakuno behind to meet with me first, I shall kept them in the palace to ensure that they are not wounded in battle. They are, after all, an heir and spouse to me. Losing them would mean losing precious national treasures to my people.”
“Caster.” Hakuno was trying to speak up now, but he delved a hand into that brown hair and enjoyed the way her body seemed to curve in towards his.
The two women were beautiful, bold beings. His archer self had been spoiled in Chaldea.
Thankfully, the singularity had decided to arise to provide him with the woman meant for him and a child to begin learning how to rule.
He’d have them slumbering in his bed before the dawn rose tomorrow.
