STITCH!!!!!!!! MISSED YOU!!!!
not sure if you've already talked about this, but if you have, feel free to ignore. what do you envision Toph's relationship with her parents to be like for the rest of her life? do they patch things up, and if so, how?
have the most wonderful rest of your day <333
BLUEEE!!! Hi blue I missed you too :)
I don't think I've actually talked about this in depth, and even if I did, I almost always answer repeat questions multiple times LOL. I'd do it a hundred times for you too :)
So, Toph Beifong and her parents is an interesting and difficult topic for me. Because on one hand, I see their relationship never really being mended. On the other, I see their relationship being fixed and happy, because Toph deserves a happy family life.
It's probably somewhere in the middle, while also leaning toward frustrating and stressful encounters and memories.
We canonically get a mended relationship between Lao and Toph in the comics, and we also know that Poppy left Lao because of the way he handled Toph running away. So, I'd imagine Toph appreciates both of these gestures, and she easily forgives them because they're her parents, she loves them and feels bad for hurting them by leaving in the first place, and she can probably tell that Lao is being genuine.
But that doesn't mean Lao and Poppy automatically got rid of their traditional mindset or perceptions of people. They probably butt heads with Toph a lot, but Toph still faces her parents head on and isn't afraid to challenge them, and she (hopefully) knows that if there's something that Lao and Poppy do that she's not okay with, she can walk away from the relationship. The ball is in her court, because she gained a lot of independence and agency when she was a teen traveling with the Avatar.
Anyway, if they were to find some semblance of common ground, I see Lao apologizing for his poor reaction to Toph leaving initially, and once he sees that the little girl he envisioned for all those years is actually a strong and capable woman. He's likely still a stiff who tries to overprotect or shelter Toph at times, but Toph probably learns to ignore it or yell at him to cut it out.
I kind of want a Toph and Poppy bonding moment, too. Since she left Lao, I imagine that the only thing stopping Poppy from reaching out to Toph sooner was not being able to find her. She probably doesn't send a letter because *waves hand in front of Toph's face* and she also has no idea where Toph could be. They've kind of traveled everywhere and don't stay in one place for a long time.
But once they finally meet up, I wouldn't mind a bonding moment between the two, because perhaps they were really close when Toph was little, but time and misunderstanding drove a wedge between them. Now, however, they can both speak freely and Poppy apologizes to Toph for not listening to her sooner, and Toph probably apologizes for running away (even though she doesn't have to). Out of Lao and Poppy, I like to think Poppy is able to relate to Toph more, and I'm a sucker for happy mother/daughter relationships.
Throughout Toph's adult life, I see her doing her own thing and occasionally visiting her parents if she has the time. Often, though, it's only when Lao and Poppy are in town when she meets up with them. Perhaps there's one too many conversations like "Oh, Toph. We found a potential suitor for you."//"Oh yes! He's a fine young lad and is close friends with the royals in Ba Sing Se -"//"Mom, Dad, quit it."
When she has not one, but two kids out of wedlock, they at first are a tad mortified, but I think by "oops kid #2" they're like "All right. Can we buy new baby clothes?" while grumbling a little bit that they should've tried harder to get her to marry a prince or something lol. But still, I think having cute grandchildren make up for everything, they learn to not be so concerned about things like that.
I think they all try to make an effort to be in each other's lives, but it's also a complicated scenario for everyone. They all try their best, but they still argue a bit or just don't have the same perspectives on many things.
Does that answer your question? I hope it does lol Kind of went on a tangent there ope. Thank you so much for the ask, blue! Hope your day is as fabulous as you! :D.
......
Send me asks about ATLA, or anything, really! :D
