Reasons why I love Roger Taylor, on occasion of his 71st birthday
- his voice. So soft, almost shy sounding when he speaks, and incredibly versatile when he sings. Naturally great range, powerful high notes, raspy, rockish sound to it, pleasant and softer middle and lower register. Some of my favourite vocals of Roger's are in Drowse, Tenement Funster, Rock It (Prime Jive) and I'm In Love With My Car. Not to mention his backing vocals on songs like In the Lap of The Gods and THAT line of The March of the Black Queen.
- just like his voice is an integral part of Queen's signature sound, I can't imagine the band without his drumming. His style, although there probably are more technically skilled drummers, really appeals to me. Before Queen, I used to not care about drums, but listening to his drum fills and solos made me really appreciate this instrument.
- this almost goes without saying, but his immense talent. He has a magnificent voice, is an excellent drummer, and also plays timpani, tambourine and guitar. He has a fantastic sense of rhytm and harmony and I really enjoy his musicality. His songwriting is great, too - I love most of the stuff he wrote for Queen, and I thoroughly enjoy his solo career.
- speaking of songs, I truly love Roger's versatility in that department, both topic and genre wise. He experiments, writes songs about things he finds important, lighthearted, uplifting songs, brings up social issues, does covers, writes ballads, rock songs, synth pop, rock and roll, and more. So, I can literally pick his stuff according to my mood and not get bored.
- his personality. He speaks his mind, is hella intelligent and well-spoken and strong, cares about things he believes in and people he's close to. He's super expressive in gestures, eyes, body language, which I find extremely adorable. Even despite his flaws he must be a huge joy and fun to be around, and I'm sure there's plenty of topics that could be discussed and covered in a conversation with Roger. It took me a while to warm up to him, but once you start loving this man, he doesn't let you go.
- his positivity. He smiles so much (and has a beautiful smile!), laughs a lot, has a great sense of humour. I really like that about him, hence I like to call him Ray of Sunshine Taylor.
- his restless energy. He is just as active now at 71 as he was in his early 20s. This is truly admirable and something I aspire to when I'm older; I find it a true source of inspiration when someone keeps doing what they love to do, no matter how much criticism and backlash they receive, as long as they feel like it.
- his attitude to family and relationships. Roger just seems so...open and friendly and warm. On the outside he exudes that aura of rockstar arrogance and "I couldn't be bothered" attitude, but from everything I see and read about him convinces me that he's just a huge softie and deeply cares about his friends and family.
- his eyes. Big, blue, gorgeous, expressive. His entire spirit is present in his gaze, and it hasn't changed a bit.
- not gonna lie, I also just relate to him in certain ways and inspires me greatly.
Soo... HAPPY 71ST BIRTHDAY, ROGER MEDDDOWS TAYLOR, I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND HOPE YOU HAVE THE BEST DAY EVER❤️❤️❤️

I’ve been fairly detached from the fandom since past few months, for various reasons. I’m slowly returning to my regular scrolling and blogging, and I miss being active and interacting with you guys & gals, so please

Perhaps I expect too much from the Twitter fandom, but I really wish some people realized that the fact they dislike something doesn't equate with "this thing is bad/shit". Like...your personal taste is not the indicator of quality, why is that so difficult to comprehend?

Alright, time to get controversial 🤣 Is there a Queen song that you absolutely cannot stand?
Yes, definitely! I’ve discussed it briefly before, so I could technically just name a couple of songs, but perhaps it’s time to do something different - I’ll make a catalogue of my most despised/disliked song in each Queen album, going chronologically. LET’S BEGIN HONESTY HOUR
Queen I
Tbh, I don’t even remember what some of the songs on that album sound like XD I usually skip Great King Rat when I listen to my Queen playlist, so perhaps that one? I don’t hate it though
Queen II
This is gonna be very unpopular, but I could never warm myself towards Ogre Battle. No matter how many times I listen to it and TRY to like it I just can’t. The Loser in the End, on the other hand, is a combo of great vocals and cringy lyrics, so the wasted potential actually makes me pretty mad XD
Sheer Heart Attack
All songs are at least decent, thank you
A Night at the Opera
Don’t care about Sweet Lady, the album would be better without it. Don’t hate it, but WHY
A Day at the Races
Again, all songs are at least decent, White Man is my least fave, though. Interested idea, flawed execution imo
News of the World
According to my old albums review, I gave the lowest score to Sheer Heart Attack, and I still stand by that view I guess. When I watch Queen concerts I’m usually waiting for that song to end as soon as possible
Jazz
Overall, I don’t think it’s the most fortunate album. XD Already forgot most songs, and the only one I actually LOVE is Don’t Stop Me Now. And Jealousy.
The Game
Don’t Try Suicide. Musically it’s not bad, but also not great; it’s the lyrics that makes it terrible.
Hot Space
Ehehehehehe THERE WE ARE. Considering that I genuinely like only three songs and others I merely tolerate or actively despise, it’s gonna be a huge criticfest. XD First place has got to be Body Language, I loathe that one to the point that it makes me physically uncomfortable (the video doesn’t help). Then lands Life is Real (horrible lyrics, I don’t even remember what it sounds liek and I probably don’t want to XD), Cool Cat (sounds like whining to me). Aaand finally yet another fairly popular song, i.e. Back Chat. It’s catchy, but annoyingly so, I don’t fancy it at all.
The Works
Machines. Just..Roger and Brian, why?
A Kind of Magic
Gimme the Prize (Kurgan’s Theme). It’s too bang-y and loud, and add all the sounds and dialogue from Highlander (having Flash Gordon flashbacks) to make it somehow even worse.
The Miracle
My Baby Does Me - hell no. I say no more.
Innuendo
The Hitman gets really close, but the true honour goes to Delilah. Jesus, I can’t stand this one (I appreciate the sentiment but...).
Not rating Made in Heaven because I don’t hate any song on that album :3
Tell me about the songs you dislike! :D

I'm sure some of you have already seen this, but I thought I'll post anyway. :)
So, today at 11 AM was the official unveiling of the Freddie Mercury alley in Warsaw, and according to our Polish media this makes us the first country in the world to have an alley named after Queen's glorious frontman!
The alley is located in a very lovely, peaceful and quiet place, surrounded with a lot of trees and parks. Also, there is a George Harrison and a John Lennon street nearby!
A lot of citizens of Warsaw were absolutely thrilled by the event, supported the initiative and many attended the unveiling. The fact that we do have this alley now was achieved thanks to hundreds of Polish Queen fans who signed a petition, which was then presented to the city council and finally accepted. :)))))

THANK YOU, Queen, for this magnificent performance. For provoking the same feelings of nostalgia, happiness, excitement and unity today as you did 34 years ago. On July the 13th, 1985 the angels sung on that scene, and we shall not forget.

Today I saw this "Somebody to Love" biography of Freddie Mercury in my local bookstore, and started to read bits and pieces, in hope for a fairly decent book. I didn't have to read too long, I quickly put it back on the shelf the second I saw detailed descriptions of Freddie's "passionate affair" with Barbara. Nope.

‘right gals and guys, I still have 1) one exam tomorrow; 2) an assignment to upload; 3) a review to write, BUT after I’m done with everything I’m gonna try and come back to my usual Queen blogging. Here are some things I would like to do during holidays:
Wembley ‘86 and Hungarian Rhapsody liveblog (finally!)
Solo albums review series (starting chronologically)
Queen music videos review and commentary
“Queen & cinema” gifset/edit
If you guys have any requests/ideas, please let me know! It’s been a while since I contributed to the fandom ;)

Im glad the asks helped! I have anxiety and depression and can understand what youre going through. My ask today is what are your thoughts on Bo Rhap as a movie?
Thanks! :) I’m above all extremely happy to see people on this site being so kind and supportive in time of need, it’s a human quality that will never get enough praise! I’m also really sorry to hear about your problems. :( I send you lots of love, I can imagine how difficult it must be for you, but I’m sure you're strong and coping❤️
As for your actual question - that’s some truly excellent and interesting timing, considering that I rewatched BoRhap (with @incblackbird) literally three days ago. :P It was already my third rewatch, and while I enjoyed the movie overall, I liked it quite significantly less than upon the last time I saw it. Of course, there’s been gazillion discourses about BoRhap, whether it’s genius, extremely evil, etc., but since it’s such a broad topic (and I think some of my opinions could potentially outrage certain parts of the fandom), this time I’m going to stick to purely cinematic terms.
Needless to say, the soundtrack is excellent - with music such as Queen’s you don’t really have to do much, but they made a good choice of songs, alternating between their best known hits (We Will Rock You, Somebody to Love, Bohemian Rhapsody) and songs to fit the narrative (Doing All Right, Now I’m Here, Who Wants to Live Forever, Love of my Life). It’s practically impossible to leave the screening of BoRhap without at least one Queen song stuck in your head.
The cast was overall very good, too. My personal favourites in terms of acting were Gwilym Lee (who I liked even more than Rami), Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton and Allen Leech - I think they did a great job with their roles as they were written (whether their characters were well written or not is a subject for a whole another discussion). All the side characters were well acted, too (Mike Myers, Meneka Das and Aaron McCusker, for instance, I found particularly memorable), but I must admit I wasn’t a big fan of Joe Mazzello and Ben Hardy, but even they weren’t bad. So, acting is definitely one of the strongest points of the film.
Moving on, I also think they did a great job when it comes to costumes (Brian lending some of his old clothing definitely helped) and make-up (except for Roger’s wigs, perhaps); the choreography and stage movement for the characters were super well done, too - and it definitely wasn’t an easy task!
Now, let’s discuss cinematography. I will talk about editing in a separate paragraph, so for now I’m gonna stick to other aspects. The composition of shots struck me as rather mediocre, nothing particularly exceptional in either good or bad way, it was pretty basic but rather correct. Of course, there were some shots I really liked, but if I were to start adding screenshots the post would become way too long. XD The colours I really liked, especially in the musical scenes - they were vivid and lovely, and they used a combination of colours that I tend to appreciate in cinema, like various shades of blue and red. Finally, the camerawork - for dialogue scenes it was correct; again, rather average with some use of handheld camera which served no particular dramatic purpose, but it wasn’t nowhere near very bad, also it’s quite a common thing in modern biopics I would say. Handheld camerawork isn’t bad in default, but my comment largely comes from my personal preferences: in most cases I don’t really like it, especially when it’s particularly shaky. Then, there are scenes in BoRhap which display excellent camerawork, namely Live Aid and We Will Rock You scenes. If most scenes were filmed like that, I would give the movie a higher rating.
Before I move to the worst (imo) cinematic aspects of the movie, let’s have a look at writing. It is probably the most divisive thing in the fandom - people seem to either adore or absolutely loathe it; my stance lies somewhere inbetween. The first time I saw the film (I’m gonna remind you that I’ve seen it four times), I had certain objections, but the script didn’t bother me all that much; I was mostly simply having fun in the cinema. With every next watching, the experience was getting gradually worse, but even now I don’t hate the movie. Yes, some of the dialogue is cheesy, trite and makes me cringe a bit - certain parts of the script definitely end on an “overly sentimental” territory, I can’t deny that. Knowing quite a lot about Freddie, Queen and their stories, I generally think they deserve a better script; some characterisation was a bit offputting and chronology was all over the place. Having said that, I understand where some of those narrative choices come from, as scripts for mainstream movies require oversimplification of events, archetypes, and patterns. And quite frankly, I don’t think BoRhap differs any drastically from most modern biopics; it’s not a masterpiece, but - in my opinion - it’s also not bad overall. Regardless the flaws of the script, the movie still managed to emotionally affect a huge, if not major, portion of viewers, entertain and move them, and honestly? I think that was pretty much the point. Btw, there were some lines that I really loved, like “Puritans in public, perverts in private”, and I still think that their decision to cut from Live Aid performance to Ray Foster’s grim face during We Are the Champions was the funniest shit ever. XD Would BoRhap’s script benefit from sticking to historical accuracy? I’m gonna say yes, I think so - the scenes that were the closest to actual events are definitely the strongest - but this approach would require tons of changes, including narrowing down the narrative scope and probably the characters, too. Also, a lot of people keep forgetting that this is not an arthouse, niche film and therefore resorts to narrative and cinematic choice that compromise between satisfying the fans and the newbies; it’s meant to tell a (simple) story and entertain, not educate and provoke existential and philosophical debates. Still, I think the script could have been done a bit better, because some scenes  (the tour “Now I’m Here” montage) feel a bit...random?
Finally, the infamous editing. I totally agree that it was one of the most undeserving Academy Awards that year, because some scenes were simply atrocious, with their unmotivated and overly fast cuts and unreasonably ridiculous face that doesn’t fit the dialogue scenes, and those are honestly the worst when it comes to pacing and editing. I think the editing is the worst aspect of BoRhap; but even here, I could point at some examples of pretty amazing editing (Oscar-worthy? Not necessarily, but definitely very good); again, I’m gonna bring up Live Aid and “We Will Rock You” scenes, especially the latter, because less people talk about it. I already mentioned that it has some really nice camerawork AND colours, but also the editing is actually really cool, because it’s cut to the music! Which makes me think: “what a shame!”, because if they went with different editing choices, the movie would be affected in a positive way. The way we have it, it’s either a hit or miss (sadly, mostly miss), and the badly edited scenes are pretty striking, so the ones that are done nicely are unfortunately a wasted potential.
Okay, this is already waaay too long, so I’m just gonna finish with a few general remarks. Well, despite BoRhap’s flaws, I still like and enjoy it. With every screening slightly less, but enjoy it anyway. I don’t think any amount of discourse will ever take away my positive experiences and memories from seeing it twice in cinema. It sparked my previously dormant love for Queen and united me with some people in the fandom and in real life; making this movie made Brian and Roger happy; as a result, I like this movie. It brings back a lot of positive recollections, which sometimes is more important than critical discussions. And boy, do I adore those - I’m often critical and I adore analysing stuff academically; but I think that not all daily interactions require those and depending on who’s asking and what about, I’m capable of switching between the two options. If somebody asks me in 25 years whether I remember the times of BoRhap’s release, I’ll be far less likely to say “yeah, the editing sucked and writing was cringy, I remember the discourse on tumblr and instagram” than “Yes, I remember that chilly evening in December when I had a really fun time and ended up with 10 Queen songs stuck in my head”, because the latter is the experience I want to remember.
Thank you for this ask! Hope it wasn’t overly exhausting to read, I didn’t proofread this, sorry! xx

What is your favorite piece of trivia about Queen?
Thank you anon, this question is exactly what lies in my interests! :3
In no particular order:
- Roger pretending to be a judo master
- Queen getting kicked out of the porn screening for laughing throughout the whole thing
- Brian dedicating a song to his deceased cat
- Crystal’s tale about drunk Roger waking Dominique up at like 3 in the morning with a loud “Darling, I made it!”
- Freddie and Jim’s first meeting, with Jim basically telling Freddie to fuck off XD
- it’s a classic and everyone knows that, but the fact that Brian built his own guitar never ceases to amaze me
- while I’m at this, I can’t not mention the Deaky amp
- John forgetting his bass line for Under Pressure when he went out to have a pizza
- the fact that they all had (in my opinion!) excellent taste in movies and some of the films they loved are also my favourites (like A Clockwork Orange,  Cabaret and Some Like it Hot)
- Roger refusing to have a meeting with Argentinian politicians
- last but definitely not least, Freddie’s famous “Simon Ferocious” story
That’s all off the top of my head! :D

Hey hey! :D
Yesss, good!^^
Oh, I know the feeling of excitement upon discovering some old press clippings and other sources. :D As a historian who spent some time digging old stuff, in archives, libraries and museums, I adore anything that qualifies as historical (although that term is debatable itself, I suppose!).
Please feel free to ramble!
What’s my main interest in Queen? Oh, that’s a good one... I mean, obviously it all started with music, but I’m in no way an expert in that field, so I can only rely on some more professional articles and trust my own hearing. :P
I believe that the main reason my obsession with Queen hasn’t faded yet and has been fairly persistent for over 2 years by now is that I’m not only interested in their music but also in the band as 4 individuals of particularly compelling personalities. I like digging into their history (not to be confused with ‘sex life’, I don’t find that really interesting; I’m interested in their personal lives only to a certain degree, i.e. one which allows us to understand where they come from and get some broader context), what influenced them and how they influenced others. You know, that kind of interdisciplinary approach that mixes social history, cultural studies, etc. Oh, and I’m also extremely interested in their performances and reception in non-democratic countries. :)

I saw the 1945 version of the painting of Dorian Gray. Its really interesting as the film is shot in black and white, except for 3 sections ( when you see the painting at first and the painting changing) which are in Technicolor. Angela Lansbury is the singer he first falls in love with originally. Its an interesting adaption and i really liked the idea of black and white and then just the painting in color. My question is which of the queen members style do you most admire?
Hi there!
I love The Picture of Dorian Gray, but I only saw the adaptation with Ben Barnes, and frankly wasn’t very fond of it. :P Unless Penny Dreadful counts, that one I actually liked!
From what you describe it looks like the 1945 film contains some original concepts and cinematography, I’m sure it looks amazing! Sounds really interesting, I’m gonna add it to my list right now. :3
I assume you mean style as in fashion? If so, then well, that’s a tough one, because they’re all so damn iconic. XD Obviously, Freddie’s style was the most outrageous and extravagant, but some of his outfits are not really my thing. I really like Brian’s style, especially his Zandra Rhodes outfits, but his inability to button his shirt never ceases to amaze me. I guess John is the most ordinary when it comes to this aspect, but he also pulled those monochromatic clothes SO WELL. Then we have Roger, our Rainbow Man, with his tendency to mix clashing colours and choices pretty much as bold as Freddie’s. XD Still, he looks good almost all the time, so for me, it’s a tie between Brian and Roger. :D
