My review of The Bionic Life / 仿生人间
Tumblr media
Don't be afraid of venturing into this drama, even if sci-fi isn't your thing. It very much focuses on the human consequences rather than the science.
Quick blurb: In the near future, human-identical robots have been banned due to their negative effects on society, but a black market continues to exist. Cheng Nuo (played by Song Weilong) and An Qiu (played by Wen Qi) are investigators who handle cases involving the banned robots. What starts as a simple procedural unravels into a deeper conspiracy.
It was the casting that pulled me in. Wen Qi is the most critically acclaimed actress of her generation, having won awards since childhood, while Song Weilong is known for being so good-looking that no one actually cares whether or not he can act. Interesting combination, and somehow, a perfect fit. This is not a romance drama but their chemistry was through the roof.
I didn't check the director's name before I started, but if you've seen Chen Zhengdao's other dramas (like A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower, or Delicious Romance), you'll recognize his style right away. It's both fast-paced and empathetic. It brings light and humour to heavy situations. It feels very human and real.
This is definitely the best acting I've seen from Song Weilong. It's my first time watching Wen Qi's acting, and she definitely lives up to the hype.
Song Weilong's action scenes are a lot of fun. That man can really run and jump. (Makes sense, because he has a martial arts background). Why is he best-known for idol dramas? I feel like his pretty face is getting in the way of his action movie career.
The story itself is also so good. I know they had to make cuts, but I didn't feel it as a viewer. It still ended up being a fascinating and touching story.
This is definitely a drama worth watching, especially since it's only 12 episodes. I honestly don't know why it got so little hype. Chen Zhengdao's dramas are quality, and this is no exception.
