AU-gust 2021 ( Day 24 )
Gangs
(in which Rodney is a Montague & John is a Capulet)
.
“By my head, here come the flyboys.”
“By my heel,” Elizabeth counters with a serene smile, crossing her legs so that her right stiletto is mere inches away from the glass table, “I care not.”
Rodney, who looked up from the screen of his laptop when Radek had exclaimed, blinks. “Okay, what just happened?”
“We’re here, is what happened.”
Sure enough, what seems like half the outpost’s military contingent has arrived, the group led by Major Anne Teldy, who is now looking at their table like she’s just swallowed a particularly appetizing canary.
Her smirk turns even sharper as she winks at Radek. “Some of us are flygirls, by the way.”
“And some of us are not fly-anything at all!” another female voice adds in a grating, sing-song manner. One quick look tells Rodney it’s Laura Cadman, his favorite Marine Lieutenant.
(By favorite, he means the first of the bunch he’ll gladly trade for a spare whiteboard marker.)
“Grunts, then.” Elizabeth’s smile takes a more beatific curve as she meets Major Teldy’s gaze. “To what do I owe this pleasure, Anne?”
Major Teldy just shrugs. “Not everything’s about you, Doc.” She cocks her head at something over her shoulder. “We’re just here to provide moral support.”
Just as Rodney’s about to abandon the bizarre interaction and give his very important work the full attention it deserves, Teldy and Cadman both sidestep to let another military officer come through.
“Hey, Rodney.”
“Sheppard?”
It’s possible that both Elizabeth and Radek are now giving him accusing eyes, but Rodney’s too fixated on the way Cadman and Teldy keep on poking Sheppard to truly care. Sometimes, it gets a little confusing exactly who the outpost’s military commander is.
(Unlike in the civilian side of things, where it’s easy to realize that Dr. Elizabeth Weir is the only person in the entire island that Rodney defers to. It’s not something he’s readily proud of, but it’s also a fact he won’t dare deny, not even on paint of death.)
Sheppard gives him one of his trademark grins. “Just wanted to know if you’re still on for tonight.”
In what is either a fit of insanity or the most sane thing Rodney’s ever done in the last week, he nods. “Uh-huh. I— yeah.” He tries to clear his throat. “That is to say, yes. Of course. Tonight. Yes.”
The smile on Shepard’s face grows wider, and he gives the rest of the table one more polite, little nod before he’s walking away, Teldy, Cadman, and the rest of their club in tow.
“What was that!”
Rodney rolls his eyes as he finally returns to his work. “Get over it, Elizabeth.”
“Unbelievable!” his boss exclaims. “First Carson, now you? Cavorting with the enemy? Planning dates in front of me?”
Rodney snorts. “It’s a hardly a date. The Colonel is simply taking me to a spot at the edge of the island where the Arcturus Comet will be most visible.”
“Stargazing?” Rodney hears Radek say. “I must say, Rodney. That is quite romantic.”
“Do you hear yourselves right now? This the enemy we’re are talking about!” Elizabeth uncrosses her legs to wave at the air. “The only way for us to have any manner of control in this facility is if we show our oppressors that we are united.”
“Please,” Rodney says. “They’re just security detail, Elizabeth. They’re not our jailors. Just because you have this frustrated. . . sexual. . .thing whatever with Major Teldy, doesn’t mean the rest of us have to participate.”
“I’m afraid Rodney is correct, Doctor Weir,” Radek adds turning back to his tea. “We are in a laboratory complex on an island in the middle of nowhere. We must work together if we are to survive the winter.”
Knowing Elizabeth will need a moment to recover from her most loyal underling telling her she’s wrong, Rodney gathers his things and stands.
“Where are you going?” he hears Elizabeth shout as he heads for the cafeteria’s exit.
“Control Tower rooftop,” he answers over his shoulder. “I have a secret wedding to attend, after all, and I don’t wish to keep Friar Beckett waiting.”
“Rodney!”

learning to be loved
for @ananova55 and @popkin16
Rodney’s mother didn’t love him.
He was aware that it was a cliche - the misunderstood genius whose mommy hadn’t loved him enough or loved him too much - but that didn’t make it any less true.
The truth was that Rodney had never really minded the lack of love shown to him by his own mother because he knew it wasn’t personal.  His mother didn’t love anything; not her husband, not her job, not the kid that she’d been stuck with by accident or even the second kid that she’d been naive enough to think would fix whatever the hell was broken in her marriage.
No, he didn’t mind that his mother found him undeserving of love.  It was everyone else who agreed with her that was the problem.
It wasn’t that people couldn’t love him, because some people did.  For a short time. His father loved him for eight years until Rodney pointed out a flaw in his grand unifying theory, fixing the calculation but destroying their relationship.  Jeannie lasted longer than most, loving him for almost twenty-two years until Rodney ruined it all again by not agreeing with her choice to throw her education away because an English major couldn’t figure out how a condom worked.
It was a pattern that repeated itself throughout his entire life.  Eventually, Rodney decided it was best not to bother looking for love any more.  He didn’t need it, no matter what The Beatles said. Who needed love when there was science and engineering and discovery and wormholes and the chance to explore the galaxy.
Choosing to take the potentially one way trip to Atlantis wasn’t exactly an agonising choice when there was no-one who loved you to stay for.
Rodney thought that he’d found something good on Atlantis.  Not love, he knew it wasn’t that, but perhaps it was something like it.  Acceptance, maybe? Respect?
He carved out a place for himself - for all of him, not just his intellect - and it felt a lot like those first eight years of his life did, when he had a father and a sister who - - well, it didn’t matter what it felt like because it didn’t last.
It never did.
Doranda happened and it turned out that the people he thought were starting to care about him only cared about his big brain and what it could do for them after all.
It was a mistake that he would only make once.
Things smoothed over after Doranda eventually - Jeannie even came back into his life and didn’t seem to actively hate him any more - but Rodney didn’t ever mistake it for love, or anything like it, again.
He continued on as he had been.  He spent time with Radek in the labs, accompanied Teyla to the mainland whenever she asked.  He shared beers with Ronon and Carson, talked about classical music with Elizabeth. He shared everything with John, everything John wanted from him was his to take.
Rodney’s own capacity to give love had never been in doubt.
And then he found himself dying.
The Ascension machine had been fun for a little while, even if the mind reading had been hard to deal with.  He knew he wasn’t a well-liked man, it didn’t mean that he wanted to hear exactly how disliked he was.
Ascend or die.
Rodney figured he should do something nice for the people he loved before he went so he set about doing his last deeds and if Elizabeth thought that he was just trying to better his soul so he could ascend, well, he shouldn’t really have expected anybody to think more of him.
And then it all came down to this.  Stuck in a bed, barely able to move with all the people he loved surrounding him.
It was actually kind of nice.  As ways to die go, it wasn’t terrible.
“ Rodney, as far as this ascension thing, I know you didn't have much success but at this point, what've you got to lose?”
Rodney smiled absently.  Of course, John would want him to go out fighting.  Rodney figured that it wouldn’t cost him anything to do this one last thing for him.
“Hook me up,” he said.  “Clear blue skies. All my troubles, just drifting away. OK ... stop talking now.”
Then Elizabeth went and turned his world around.
“Rodney, you’re a good person.  Know that we love you.”
It seemed almost cruel, to lie to him in his last moments, but she sounded so sincere.  They all did. Rodney breathed deeply and unlocked the door that he had slammed closed against the mind reading.  What did he have to lose after all? He was dying anyway, it’s not like he’d have to live with their true feelings for long.
The door opened and - - -
“You love me,” he breathed, finding the surge of emotion hard to believe.  “Really?”
“In the way that a friend feels about another friend,” John answered awkwardly.
He was so clearly lying that Rodney would have laughed if he had more energy.  John’s love for him was so big, so complete, that it was like another person in the room. It was - - -
Rodney didn’t know what had done to deserve love like this but he was damned if he was going to give it up so easily.
He concentrated on the feelings surrounding him, urging his brain to come up with a way to stay, to - -
“Oh my God,” Carson sounded wrecked, his pain a knife in Rodney’s head and suddenly Rodney knew exactly what to do.  He surged up in the bed and grabbed Carson by the lapels of his medical coat. Staring frantically intto Carson’s eyes he wills his friend to understand, to hear him, to save him, to let him keep these feelings, to - - - a bright white light sucked Rodney downwards and all he could think was that he hoped it worked.  But even if it didn’t - - Rodney knew that he was loved, knew that he was deserving of love and that was a gift beyond measure.
Rodney had learned how to be loved again.

The Morning After - Oscars 2019 Edition
Tumblr media
My favourite photo from the 91st Academy Awards
My two favourite moments from last night’s Oscars are better represent in audio, those being Olivia Coleman’s speech when she won Best Actress over the heavily favoured Glenn Close, and when Rayka Zehtabchi exclaimed “I can’t believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar!”
It was fun keeping up with everyone’s reactions and remarks during the awards, and chiming in with many of my own even though I do, as always, find the speed of twitter a little breakneck. Also friends and colleagues who, knowing that I’m a big movie buff, came by or message me to discuss last night’s show.  At times we got animated enough that random passerbys and company VPs felt the need to chime in, which is the best gathering of the minds possible in my world.
Here’s a list of the winners and what I thought of each recipient:
Best Picture
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” (WINNER) “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice”
While not entirely classy of Spike Lee to turn his back when Green Book was announced, he was able to joke about it later that every time a film about driving was pit against his own film, he would lose to it (Do the Right Thing lost to Driving Miss Daisy) My silver lining was knowing that TIFF audiences picked yet another Best Picture winner.  We do have quite a track record, don’t we? I really thought the Academy was going to make a different type of history in diversity by awarding a foreign film (Roma) with Best Picture. Or at least Black Panther, that would’ve been cool too.
Director
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War” Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” (WINNER) Adam McKay, “Vice”
I agree with this win.
Lead Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” Glenn Close, “The Wife” Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” (WINNER) Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born” Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
I was ecstatic to have guessed wrong in my Oscar picks for this category.  Both Olivia Coleman and Glenn Close were such strong contenders (as was Melissa McCarthy).  Glenn Close carried her film, Olivia Coleman elevated her already very good movie to another level.
Lead Actor
Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (WINNER) Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
It’s nice that Rami Malek won, and I guessed he would. But I think Christian Bale was still better.
Original Song
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice (WINNER) “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
I don’t think any other song legitimately had a chance.
Original Score
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard “Black Panther,” Ludwig Goransson (WINNER) “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell “Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat “Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
One last time I’ll say this: Where was First Man? After not seeing it on the list I really had no one to root for.
Adapted Screenplay
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen “BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee (WINNER) “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins “A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
I think a writing Oscar is an excellent award for Spike Lee to win. I’m rarely familiar with the original story vs its adaptation, therefore it’s hard to say who did the best job of adapting their source material.  That said, any way you slice it, BlacKkKlansman was a great script.
Original Screenplay
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader “Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly (WINNER) “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “Vice,” Adam McKay
While I put my money on Green Book, I can’t fathom why anyone would think it’s a better script than The Favourite nor Vice (I didn’t see First Reformed, and I think Roma is at least on par with Green Book) Destroyer was an original script right? I’m personally disappointed it wasn’t up for any writing awards.
Live Action Short Film
“Detainment,” Vincent Lambe “Fauve,” Jeremy Comte “Marguerite,” Marianne Farley “Mother,” Rodrigo Sorogoyen “Skin,” Guy Nattiv (WINNER)
I didn’t watch any of the shorts this year.
Visual Effects
“Avengers: Infinity War” “Christopher Robin” “First Man” (WINNER) “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”
Again, please to be wrong in this category.  If anything I would have said First Man stood out more in audio achievement, but visual effects were also excellent and I’m glad the film got at least one Oscar because it is such a fine technical achievement.
Documentary Short Subject
“Black Sheep,” Ed Perkins “End Game,” Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman “Lifeboat,” Skye Fitzgerald “A Night at the Garden,” Marshall Curry “Period. End of Sentence.,” Rayka Zehtabchi (WINNER)
Amazing acceptance speech.  I want to see this now.
Animated Short
“Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine “Bao,” Domee Shi (WINNER) “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall “One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
Also a fine, inspiring acceptance speech by Domee Shi. I didn’t see any other shorts but I did watch Bao several times over and my Torontonian pride swelled when it won.  Growing up Asian, there’s a lot of embedded humour in this short as well, the husband character is still my absolute favourite.
Animated Feature
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson “Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman (WINNER)
I really gotta see this movie.
Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” (WINNER) Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
As expected. Though Richard E Grant is still my favourite, anyone catch his interview with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet? And how he’s besties with Melissa McCarthy now? Love it.
Film Editing
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman (WINNER) “Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito “The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis “Vice,” Hank Corwin
Fixing up a film in editing doesn’t warrant it as best edited film of the year! I cannot believe Bohemain Rhapsody won in this category. Especially again films such as The Favourite and Vice, the former’s editing has a hand in shaping its visual mastery, the latter is entirely built from the art of editing. What the hell?
Foreign Language Film
“Capernaum” (Lebanon) “Cold War” (Poland) “Never Look Away” (Germany) “Roma” (Mexico) (WINNER) “Shoplifters” (Japan)
Capernaum was still better ;)
Sound Mixing
“Black Panther,” Steve Boeddeker, Brandon Proctor and Peter Devlin “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali (WINNER) “First Man,” Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Ai-Ling Lee and Mary H. Ellis “Roma,” Skip Lievsay, Craig Henighan and José Antonio García “A Star Is Born,” Tom Ozanich, Dean Zupancic, Jason Ruder and Steve Morrow
-and-
Sound Editing
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst (WINNER) “First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan “A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl “Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Just because a film is about music doesn’t automatically qualify it for best sound! Have all the Academy voters gone out of their mind??? If you’re gonna go by that misguided logic then at least give it to A Star is  Born. It’s been a day and I still can’t fathom how anyone could think the sound editing of Bohemian Rhapsody is better than First Man, A Quiet Place, and Roma!
Cinematography
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón (WINNER) “A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
This was a pretty stacked category and Alfonso Cuaron did make a beautiful looking film. I don’t know if it was more striking that Cold War or The Favourite, but all in all he did deserve the win.
Production Design
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler (WINNER) “First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton “Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim “Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Fine. At least it wasn’t Roma, and I get that more often than not the period film usually wins it, so it’s cool to shake it up. The Favourite is still my fav.
Costume Design
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter (WINNER) “The Favourite,” Sandy Powell “Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell “Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne
Again, I like The Favourite more.
Makeup and Hairstyling
“Border,” Göran Lundström and Pamela Goldammer “Mary Queen of Scots,” Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher and Jessica Brooks “Vice,” Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney (WINNER)
I’d have been surprised if anyone else won.
Documentary Feature
“Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (WINNER) “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu “Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen
:) That’s the one I picked.
Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, “Vice” Marina de Tavira, “Roma” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” (WINNER) Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
I preferred Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone’s performances. Amy Adams even.
So, that’s it for awards season 2019. I did pitiful in my predictions this year because I was way off on the technical awards, not to mention some big ones too like Best Picture.
I’ll wrap it up by recommending that you watch First Man (with a good sound set up as it is superb technical, has a great score, and supporting actress Claire Foy), Destroyer (for its story and Nicole Kidman), The Hate U Give (that delivers a much stronger message than Green Book ever will), and Beautiful Boy (where supporting actor Timothee Chalamet actually has a sizable role).
