first thing I did when I saw the child violette post was rush back to Zelda’s 1909 lookbook to see how they resemble. I love seeing how genetics work in the game

Baby, SAME! First thing I do when a Darlington is born is age them up and play a round of what I call “genetics roulette” (please see the Darlingtons one here and the Duplanchier one here, because they are all stunning). Make no mistake I will absolutely be doing another one with Zelda, Antoine, and Violette whenever she comes of age and we see her in all her pixel glory.

For now what I’ll tell you is that she has Zelda’s eye shape and mouth, Delphine’s eye color, and Antoine’s nose and jaw structure. To say she is stunning is an understatement. But what else could one expect from her parents? 😉

Blackadder Family Lore

1. Medora Lee Blackadder is probably one of the most interesting characters I’ve ever written. She is Drysten’s mother and is one of the most influential and powerful women in the magical world

But here’s the thing: she didn’t start out that way. She was born dirt poor and not particularly magically powerful, but somehow changed that. And not by particularly ethical means

If I had to write a prequel about anyone else but Gabi, it would be about Medora Lee and her identical twin sister Mary Benedict

2. Cordelia Hill is the current ancestral home of the Blackadder family, located in Stowe, Vermont and constructed in 1901. Every Blackadder for the past seven generations has been born there, with the exception of Beatrix and her younger brother, who were born in Italy and at Rising Sun, respectively

Gabi held a deep hatred for Cordelia Hill while she was alive, as she was forcibly confined there from the time she got married to the time she found out she was pregnant with Beatrix. She refused to give birth to Beatrix at Cordelia Hill and asked Drysten to move them elsewhere

Rising Sun is the former ancestral home for the Blackadders but is now used as a glorified summer home. It’s located in the southern Swiss Alps, closer to Italy. It’s where Beatrix and Benedicta grew up from the time they were toddlers, as well as Drysten’s second favorite property

It’s a very isolating, dreary, drab place to live; but is kept by the Blackadders to serve as a memory of where they came from, though it has mainly fallen to disrepair since Drysten’s death

3. The Blackadder family were pioneers in the change over from Old Magic to Modern Magic. They are well-known in the magical world for being one of the first families to switch permanently over to Modern Magic back in the late 1700s

4. Every night, Drysten read very specific stories to his kids, without fail, their whole childhood. He went through a cycle of Grimm’s Fairytales, Aesop’s Fables, Shakespeare, and Arthurian legends; never straying from those stories

It was a part of their routine and he always did it, regardless of what had happened in the day. Beatrix still owns a slightly burnt and bloodstained copy of one of those stories (I’m thinking King Lear)

5. Gabi and Drysten met at 14 years old at a charity fashion show hosted by Gabi’s aunt. He thought she was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen and only talked to her briefly afterward

They were in similar circles at school but Gabi didn’t officially join his cause until they were 16, though they didn’t start dating until they were 18

They were only dating for less than six months when Gabi got pregnant with Benedicta and they were then “pressured” into a shotgun wedding at Cordelia Hill in order to preserve the Blackadder image. They were about 19 when Benedicta was born and 20 when Beatrix was born

6. Drysten has two older siblings; Barbara and Caldwell

Barbara is the oldest and is a former professional ballerina and Manhattan socialite, but now she lives back at Cordelia Hill with her mother and teaching yoga classes in town. She was raised by her mother to be the perfect daughter, the perfect debutante, the perfect socialite. Perfect, perfect, perfect. She’s an anxious, type-A, people pleasing, oldest daughter and we need to protect her at all costs. Barbara and Drysten were very close, with Drysten always referring to her as his “beloved older sister”

She has a daughter, Barbara “Bobbi”, who is commonly assumed to be the next heir to the Blackadder fortune as she is the oldest grandchild

Caldwell is the second oldest and the current patriarch of the family, also in control of all the money as he inherited all of the money after the death of his father. He lives in the unnamed small town that the story takes place in as a reclusive novelist. Beatrix comes to live with him after her grandmother has decided she’s become “too wild” for her to handle. He’s honestly a lot like my old character Breaker, just a bit more artsy

Caldwell and Drysten were never close, as Drysten saw him as a constant competion, his biggest rival. There was always constant tension between them, but it all came to a head shortly before the murder of Gabi and Drysten ruined his life

He has a husband named Wes, who I love so much and he’s a character for another time tbh. He’s someone who Beatrix goes to for advice because she feels her uncle doesn’t care, but Wes is more of a friend than an uncle

7. The happiest Gabi and Drysten ever were was when they were living in Florence. They lived there for about three years, leaving only when it became necessary for them too because of Drysten’s actions

Leaving Florence terrified Gabi, as she was afraid of what Drysten would do when he was no longer happy, as Italy was one of his favorite places; but she tried to remain optimistic that they could be happy at Rising Sun

They were never that happy again
