She’d always prefered her hair straight, but she never went so long without taking a break. It was mainly luck that she hadn’t had any major heat damage, but even that fear didn’t make the idea any more appealing.

Her mom had always insisted on braiding Lauren’s hair herself, so the act was tangled with her in every way. Doing it by herself now only made her mom’s absence louder, but having Roman here made it better.

“Weird how?” Roman asked, detangling her hair, “Is he getting pissy about getting his ass kicked?”

“No…” She said, bracing herself, “That’s why it's weird. He’s not complaining, he’s avoiding me,” She sighed, feeling strangely annoyed. It wasn’t like she liked the constant arguing, but this was just odd…. Did she do something wrong?

Roman’s hands stopped mid braid, “Oh,” he hummed before resuming, “Maybe he’s just in a mood,” he said, a laugh peeking through his tone.

“What?” Lauren demanded.

“Nothing, nothing,” Roman snickered, “I’m just thinking about how pretty you’re going to be in that dress,” he cooed, pinching her cheek and effectively smearing whatever moisturizer he was using all over her cheek.

“Gross,” Lauren scowled to keep the smile from her face, “Anyway you’re too calm about this,” she said, her worry bubbling at the thought of just… walking into Council territory, “Do you really believe Drak’on’s going to play fair?”

It could go a lot of ways.

Logan was fair to a fault, so she wasn’t worried about dirty tricks from him. But he was predictable in a dangerous way. He had a never ending consistency that tended to wear people down. Roman wasn’t as unpredictable as Remus, but he had a similar quality. He couldn’t afford to trust that his body and magic would perform the same way every time, so he had to be creative, and more than often had to run himself ragged.

“Are you worried?” Roman asked, but it was more like an observation.

“You should be,” Lauren grumbled.

“I’m not,” Roman said.

She was oddly comforted by the finality of the promise.

Upon opening the letter, they were taken in a flash of light.

They first saw a glittering series of arcs that were almost translucent. It was as if the towering structure was merely ideas carved into the stars, but it solid beneath their feet. Deceit wasn’t sure how he was breathing with the world so far beneath him, with the stars so close.

All signs of exhaustion were wiped clean behind rosy lips and impossibly dark lashes that were stark against his eyes. Roman was in his element to anyone with eyes, but his death grip on Deceit’s arm told another story.

Virgil stirred the brothy, something, in front of him, mildly impressed by how shiny the utensils were, but mostly getting sick by how rich everything tasted. It wasn’t like he wasn’t used to eating “good” food, in fact from what he could remember he was most likely used to it, but there was a different level of luxury here. It was almost irritating.

Actually a lot of things were irritating, the key one being that his supposed date fucked off to schmooze with rich bastards, but the most alarming part of that was that Virgil wasn’t sure he wanted to talk to Logan at all right now.

It was all duel this and duel that lately. About how this is what he always deserved, how he’ll somehow become better--how everything will become better once he finally puts this to rest and claim his rightful place. Virgil’s beginning to suspect that Logan didn’t even realize how obsessed he was getting with it.

In fact, Virgil suspected that Logan’s always been obsessed with this, but Dr. Picani never let him fixate on that need entirely. Even if Dr. Picani was low-key just as dysfunctional as his Apprentices, the man was disgustingly determined to create a somewhat functional life for them.

But Dr. Picani was gone, even if they found him-- his consciousness had yet to return. All they had now was Ms. Annalise Drak’on, someone who apparently had no issue with feeding Logan’s obsession.

Virgil felt sick.

He stood, not caring about how loudly he dropped the utensils or about the dirty looks sent his way as he pushed his way through the crowd. The band was some pseudo-jazz, a thundering accompaniment to his rising anxiety and the dazzling lights were getting too much and--

His spiraling halted upon catching the faintest blue flash in the corner of his eye. Turning around he met Patton’s eyes. Virgil flinched and for the briefest moment Patton’s brow furrowed, before smoothing into his normal dazed expression, “You’re alone?”

Virgil wanted to scowl, but he couldn’t. He was alone and he wasn't sure how long its been draining away at him.

Patton nodded at his non-response, “You need air,” he said, before turning on his heel and disappearing into the crowd. It took a few seconds before Virgil realized he was meant to follow.

Virgil somehow found himself out of the crowd, feeling the cool air first, and the relief of being away from all of those people all at once. Patton was already there leaning against the balcony, the translucent beads of their gown soft against the blue of the distant earth.

Patton turned his head to acknowledge him, “Is this better?”

“I think so,” Virgil sighed, slumping against the balcony, “Uh… thanks, I guess,” Patton laughed, an off colored chirp that normally unnerved Virgil, but now only made him blush, “What?”

“I don’t scare you anymore, do I?” Patton said, covering his mouth.

“I was never--” Virgil winced at the lie, “Was I that obvious?”

“Yes, but…” Patton started, trailing off, “I didn’t mind completely,”

Virgil frowned, “You didn’t mind me being an asshole?”

“I minded,” Patton said, “But at least you didn’t hide it,” he shrugged as if that explained it all, “I knew Logan and Emile cared about me, but… it was like they were afraid to admit that they didn’t always feel safe,”

Virgil doesn’t know why, but it felt nice. It sounded nice--talking to Patton was nice in a way that Virgil didn’t even know he missed. It's been awhile since he just...had fun.

The music changed, to something delicate--a soft piano, followed by a low, breathy voice. Patton’s voice trailed off and he closed his eyes swaying to the lullaby.

rome, huh. & it finally sunk in, exactly what k had done for him. most likely he’d have been killed ( or be captured, a possibility arguably worse ), hunted down like he was an animal that disobeyed commands. which, in a way, he was. he stopped listening to their orders the moment things no longer suited him & for a dog so thoroughly trained, for it to turn & bite the hand that feeds it was bound to be a problem if left uncorrected. at this point, they’d seen him as something to put down ( if all else fails ).

warren’s dragonslayer verse info ( mentions of childhood trauma & child soldiers )

at age twelve, warren ran away from home. he'd fought with his mother & said some terrible things he didn't mean & he'd planned on going back the next day but the longer he thought about it, he didn’t really know how. a few days on the street pass before he quite literally ran into a man from a group of dragonslayers. he said his name was jacob & he was nice, kind even. he asked warren what he was running from so warren told him the truth. then as a way to to cheer him up, "hey buddy do you wanna hear a story?" he told warren all this stuff about how they were secret heros that slayed dragons to keep humans safe. at the time warren didn’t think he was telling the truth, but it was fun to hear him talk. so after buying him a meal & listening to his story, eventually jacob took pity on him, & offered him a place with them. they were nice to him there, so he stayed. after all he had no where else to go.

at this point he didn’t have any powers showing, it still felt like this far away thing & it worried him that he might never develop any at all. but once he got his powers, once they found out what he was capable of, they wanted to make extra sure he didn't run off because hey the kid might actually be useful. he couldn’t control any of it very well, but they helped him. they taught him not only control, but how to become stronger, how to push his powers past their limits until he could do even more with them.

& though he’s got his powers now, but he's still so young & impressionable. they told him he was important so he believed it. he really bought into the whole thing, he trusted them at their word when they told him dragons were monsters, that they weren’t as intelligent or as benevolent as stories made them out to be. so when he finally had full control of his fire, he went with them at the age of 15 & helped kill his first dragon. he felt sick after, hell even during. he’d been warned a head of time, shown pictures & told what to expect. but the carnage? he could never have really been prepared for that. he had nightmares for weeks after, reliving the gutted roar she’d made when she fell & knowing he’d been a part of that, no matter how monstrous these creatures might be, he didn’t like having to kill anything, anyone.

as time went on & he got more used to the sounds & sights that came with this job, he still didn't relish in killing them like some of the others but he wasn't as on the fence & believed it was important for humanity because that's what he'd been taught.

so years later, when k kept getting away despite the organisations best efforts, warren was one of the people in question trying to track him down. & after hearing about those who went after him & got taken out. warren knew he’d stand the best chance if it game down to a fight 1 on 1 so he volunteered, but some small part of him offered because he wants to observe k. he's never really seen dragons in human form for himself, just hearing about it or seeing it in pictures. & so long as warren didn’t do anything stupid to expose himself, there’s no way for k to know who he was or risk fighting without warren himself being the instigator.

he does his job and finds him but k seems... pretty normal. from what he can tell from observing from afar. so he talks to him, interacts like any normal person would. & fact is, k feels like a breathe of fresh air, its so different from what he's used to for interactions from the group that had become his family. because hey if k isn't causing problems here, maybe they should leave him be. it didn’t seem like he’d do anything unprovoked so maybe those he’d killed before for coming after him, were only because it came down to it’s him or them. if that happened happened, maybe he’d never have killed anyone in the first place.

& by this point in time, warren's getting a little tired of it. he’s been with them for over a decade, he's killed enough & yet humanity seems like nothing has really changed. it makes him feel like all of that was for nothing, that it was really was all just needless killing. he’s become so numb to the killing that it doesn’t bother him like it used to, but faced with this realisation it feels like his entire life has been wasted & he doesn’t know who’s to blame for that.

so after a bit of time, observing & interacting with k, he decides that he doesn’t want to kill him. he doesn’t want anyone else to kill him either but his power doesn’t expand past his own body. all he can do is not tell them about k, & make the decision to leave on his own.

he packs a small bag ( more for show than it was because it held nothing of use. the only thing he cared about bringing with him was the picture of his first day with them that was tucked away in his pants pocket ). & they thought he was joking. they never would have imagined that this kid, the boy they raised like their own was trying to leave them out of nowhere. once they clue in that he’s being series, it turns into a one sided yelling match where there’s a dozen men yelling & hollering in warren’s direction. they’re angry, but they’re hurt too.

& once they get past the anger of their connection to him, they realise that more than loosing a friend, they’d be losing their weapon. their one edge they have against dragons. he was to valuable, too rare for them to let him just walk out. & if their words couldn’t get through to him, force was their ONLY option. they start small, hand to hand & no weapons but he was too well trained, & much stronger than any of them. so they escalate. batons, knives, & it works a bit better. he can block the batons but it hurts him more than fists. & when he’s being attacked by that many people he was bound to get slashed. it was all pretty superficial but FUCK did it hurt ! but even that wasn’t enough, he was too fast & he’d managed to get himself a couple blades himself, & that made him a little harder to get at. finally someone got him in his side, right bellow his ribs. it was a small blade so it didn’t manage to do any major damage ( which he’s pretty sure was the intention ).

but that stab? it makes him angry. his eyes light up & when his opponents notice they all back away. one shake of his arms & they ignite, unfortunately burning away his sleeves but hey its a small price to pay. he shoots fireballs at the group, then while they’re resetting, he walks along some boxes of supplies, leaving a trail of fire from his touch that soon ignore them in full. he hears the click of a gun & rushes to step behind the burning boxes, reassessing his options. he could handle a lot but being gunned down? he wasn’t sure if he was capable of that.

still, what options did he have? if he waved the metaphorical white flag sure the fight would end but they weren’t going to trust him to walk out when they weren’t sure he’d come back. it was either that or go out in blazing glory which had always been more his speed anyway.

so he lets out a loud yell & quite literally burst into flames. he walks out from behind the cargo, his entire body enveloped in fire. he burned as hot as he possible could, knowing he couldn’t keep it up for long. & they just kept releasing rounds in his direction. it hurt. he was still getting hit but the bullets didn’t seem to pierce his skin. instead he looks down at his feet to see bullets melting down onto the floor. he could still feel the bullets hit him but his fire burned so hot it softened the bullets so much that the worse they’d do was leave a bruise, as if they’d been using a paintball gun instead of a real one.

he starts lobbing fireballs in every direction, forcing the men around him to either allow themselves to be hit & risk being burned alive, or take cover & stop trying to gun warren down. & it worked. he could hear pained yelling from the men he’d hit, & even more yelling from the worried men behind them as they attempted to figure out what to do. after all what options did they have left at their disposal? they could clean up after bullets & a dead body or two, but weapons any larger would cause more damage to their base than was worth. eventually he hears jacob himself calling out to him. warren reduces his flames just enough to stop them from impacting his vision & jacob did all the things one would expect. he asked if there was really no way to stop him. if he no longer cared about the rest of them, cause aside. if he really wanted to walk away from his family. & all warren could do was say yes.

after that he books it out of there, clothes more or less burned away, his body badly cut & bruised, a hand holding his side where the deepest stab had been. once off the base he stops by a bag he’d stashed away where no one knew, ripped a shirt to tie around his side to stem the bleeding & donned what else he had. the bag didn’t have much else besides an outfit or two. no ids, just a good bit of cash.

& he made his way to k, the only person he felt like he could trust but he was seriously not looking forward to the conversation that would no doubt ensue. but his options were either go to k & reveal the truth knowing he’d risk k killing him on the spot, or he could head back from where he came from & deal with the who knows how many consequences. frankly, neither option looked good but he’d rather be killed by k than EVER turn back. not to say he doesn’t feel pained at the thought of loosing what essentially really was his family. almost half his life had been with this group & knowing he was leaving that behind, in all honesty... it hurt.

when he finally gets to k he’s running on fumes. blood had soaked through both shirts, his bruises had begun to show in full colour & burning that much energy left him so tired he felt like he could pass out at any time. but he owed k an explanation, so that’s what he gives.

a lil baby drabble for @cxldblxxded ! BIG sad tho so read at your own risk <3

warren lies awake, staring upwards without really registering what was in his line of sight. instead his thoughts were running in circles, moving too fast for him to easily land one to process in full. the silence around them, between them, felt so incredibly loud. & its no fault of k’s that warren was in such a state ( not really anyway ). but despite warren telling as much of his story as was comfortable earlier, the one thing he hadn’t said was that he didn’t enjoy it. because what good would that do? he couldn’t take back all the lives he’d ended, & to say it out loud felt like he was making excuses when the fact is, was no longer a child unable to make his own decisions. every time he left to go off & do what he was told, he make a conscious decision to follow through & did so without exception until k himself stood in front of him & pushed him off his place on the fence. he was grateful to no longer be teetering on the edge going back & forth about whether or not what they were doing was really what was BEST.

but finally, after so many long minutes, warren finally speaks up. though his voice is still quiet, there's no way k couldn’t catch it. ❝ i never liked it you know... what i did. i hated it actually. but i didn’t really know anything else at first, i was so young when i joined them that it sort of felt like i owed them for what they did for me. they told me they were on the right side of this war & i believed them. they were my family you know? i just... i didn’t want to disappoint them. ❞ he takes a deep breath, unsure if he wants to continue, if that was enough or if nothing he said would EVER be enough.

❝ i used to get sick every time i went too. nauseated from all the carnage — from both dragons & humans. & you never really forget the smell of burning bodies. & i think part of me resented my powers. i mean i like them... but i almost never use them just for fun or anything good. its always some kind of destructive power, or like i’m just a tool used to light their fires. they always pushed me harder because they were so focused on strengthening my abilities to make me the weapon they so desperately needed, something to give them an edge. & the longer time went on, the more fights i fought, i just started to get so... apathetic to their cause but it meant that i never argued, ever. i followed me orders & fought in whatever direction they sent me. & i just.. gave myself to them... maybe— ❞ he cuts himself off, unsure how he was supposed to admit this stuff in the first place & suddenly the words feel caught in his throat, suffocating as he tries to speak. ❝ maybe if i hadn’t yelled at my mom, if i hadn’t run away from home that day — things would have been different... ❞

he’d spent so long convincing himself ( & letting others take their turn ) that he’d never have been able to be honest about how as time went on, how was he supposed to tell them anything other than yes sir, no sir. if nothing else, he learned to compartmentalise — there wasn’t really any other way for him to do his job.

❝ i feel like i’m supposed to hate you, there’s this... this voice, ❞ he frowns, eyes still on the ceiling, finding it difficult to choose the right words the first time so he wouldn’t have to talk about it all again. ❝ —telling me to run, get away from you as fast as possible. & if i’m honest, you do scare me a little. but you didn’t leave me behind that day, you even helped me recover when i’m still not sure i deserved that. & i WANT to trust you since you’ve never done anything to make me think otherwise, it would be stupid of me to still view you as something bad. but i have no idea how i’m supposed to do that. i don’t think you’re a bad person, but i know that i am. & i can’t— its hard getting past that... that thought whatever it is. ❞

you can’t participate in a genocide & still try to claim innocence. warren knows that boat sailed so long ago he’s forgotten what it even looked like. the closest thing he had was a picture taken the day they took him in. it was the one thing he was sad he couldn’t bring with him when he left. he’d actually had it on him at first, but as did much of his clothing, the photo burned to nothing in the midst of the fight. it felt like it was the only thing he had of how he used to be, without it he has no idea what that was like. he can’t remember much despite his age at the time. its like he had done his absolute BEST to forget everything up until that point because even then it was too painful to think about. & now when he tries to think back about his childhood, when he was still in loving home, a time before he even knew what powers he had, before he had ever had to think about taking anyone’s life. it was a world away, it all still felt like he was talking about someone else, some other kid who got taken advantage of by adults who knew better but just didn’t care about what it would do to him.

❝ & i’m not trying to say you have to trust me completely, i’m not even saying you have to like me. i just figured.. ❞ & he turns to the side, propping himself up on his elbow to at least look in k’s direction, ❝ if i opened up a little bit more, you might think a little less about the idea of me wanting to kill you. if nothing else all it would do is put me at a disadvantage anyway. ❞ warren supposes if he really did kill k & could prove it, the dragon slayers would probably have forgiven his leaving as a mere lapse of judgement, but he didn’t want that. even if he killed k he wouldn’t want to go back to them.

❝ i can’t make any of it better, i can’t just undo everything & restart. but even if i didn’t have to do it myself, i don’t want you dead. so i hope you can trust at least that much. ❞
