i really like the how the olgimskys designs in the first pathologic play around with material. obviously – mainly with fur.
big vlad has his huge fur coat – it's very much in spirit of his hes bourgeoisie caricature like design. it's arguably not the best looking and i dont think that's intentional – his coat in patho 2 is clearly supposed to look very cozy and nice. i actually like how symmetrically the fur falls in the upper back of the original design. it's charming. overall the coat really emphasizes this very old school idea of wealth.
it reads to me clearly as fashion, not as an uniform – alexanders outfit is very elaborate as well, but it does read very, well, governorish. vlads quite extravagant compared to the other rulers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that design philosophy is not really typical for pathologic, i don't really think it is – grief does fall into it a bit, but that's all. it makes vlad stand out in some really cool ways, as he has an unique silhuette. it's kind of insane how well theyre able deal with a character that has to overpass the barriers of their standard design. everyone knows that his face in p2 is like. insanely well made. but did you maybe notice how good his voice acting in the original pathologic is? ridicoulously good compared to like. anna. it really makes me wish they decided on more variety regarding other characters. oh well.
Tumblr media
let's talk p1 kapella because shes obviously a showstopper. besides her obvious cuteness, i like how much it focuses on jeans as a material. it is, i think, a symbol of wealth in her case. i am polish and for me there was always this idea floating around than during the PRL period jeans was considered to be a luxury good.
Tumblr media
(here it is represented in ryszard zamorski's sculpture "playboy"-- a pop art image of a smiling man covered in jeans from head to toe. fun. hip. well-off)
and so she is draped in jeans, just like her father is draped in fur – her wealth manifests clearly as well.
its also worth noting, that she has fur details on her collar too. that plays into the visual identity of them as a family – she is his daughter, she is a successor. i love her biig satin bow. so cute. makes her look like a very pretty rich girl. old-school wealth with a modern-ish twist.
and i think you already know where i'm going with this. yeah... vlad jr does not have any fur element in his p1 outfit. i like to overinterpret that.
Tumblr media
like in the context, i feel fur represents mainly wealth – but it's also worth noting that it's a material foreign to the setting. i really like the spindle touch quote from p2
Tumblr media
and i think it works for fur in p1 as well, although, obviously, every textile material comes from outside town.
but whats fur outside of that? lets think fur as a symbol a cruelty that also connects man with nature. fur as a terribly sensual material.
and vlad doesnt wear it: what are the reasons for that?
1. hes working with dirt. it would get dirty
2. he doesnt really like looking wealthy – hes not like the other olgimkys! the unusual simplicity is, to me, kind of reminicent of what victor is wearing – and vlads a successor to victor. in utopian ending hes supposed to tame maria/nina a little with his normalguyness. when you choose to do an utopian ending as artemy, he notes that maria will be dangerously wild without a husband
3. i think he denies himself luxury. because of how his shed looks i think hes an utopist that separates himself from the reality of his feelings – and so he separates himself from such a sensual material. but thats reallly a material for another, much more headcanonish post in which i will incorporate fragments from czesław miłosz's biography. i will make that one when ill play p2.
and btw: its a strange model, right? but i like it, i actually really do. i like how obviously blonde he is -- it is a soft callback to victoria. hes similar to her. her son.
also, i dont think it was intentional, i like how big he is in game. it feels like there is too much room for his soul in this body and so it echoes. i have the same feelings about like. ross from friends so thats more like a throwaway point.
it does manage to make him very much like a bussiness man – and vlad sr in his bourgouise caricature swag is very bussinessmannish as well. so maybe in that way he takes after him too? just a bit.
this is all very surface level analysis, but i do think about it a lot. i think p1 managed to communicate what it wanted to do with those characters very clearly through visual language.

BARIN And yet, money stink. [Vlad the Heavy pushing spoiled meat]
Everything just (and only!) penny-pinching about him, just (and only.) reigning over souls and stuffs, just distributing and purchasing and gaining for years and years and years — and everything the Bull Enterprise ever was, to the last slaughtered heifer and the last flesh fly and the last сut of rotten meat, all that that Vlad does not willing severed from himself because it's all so his, so real; where's that thin line in-between now — it's hard to tell

POV: Vladislav Olgimsky Sr. Day: 8 Time: Night Status: @reallybadgrief
The town was doomed. Vladislav was sure of it now and he could only try his hardest to keep his family safe. As soon as he returned to the Lump he summoned his men again for three more letters. One for his son, one for the guards guarding the Termitary, and lastly one for his appointed warehouse keeper.
His son would be reunited with him in the Lump and he would stay there until this all would end. The Termitary would be opened as per the Inquisitor’s request, though no good would come of it. The warehouse, now likely already but a shadow of how he left it, would be opened once more, even if only to get him the supplies he would need.
Vladislav scoured the mountains of papers and reports of what lay in each warehouse and selected only those that contained dry rations and medicine. He would get them all, lest they go to waste.
Once he knew which boxes he wanted, he wrote a letter to the man that labelled himself in the streets as “Bad Grief”. Vladislav still rolled his eyes at the name he gave himself, but as long as he returned his goods to the lump, all would be well between them. The boxes he sought had no labels, only the paper records kept the information of what they held within. As long as the warehouse rat didn’t pry open the boxes, he likely won’t grow suspicious of his intentions. Three boxes of medicine, six of rations. He demanded them be returned to the lump first thing in the morning.

I sort of hate what p2 does with the olgimskies, it robs them of their uniqueness. The weird somber awkwardness that Victoria’s death brings. Capella being left alone in a mix of uncertainty and self-empowerment to live up to her mother’s image without guidance. Vlad’s insistence things are only so weird right now because he’s actually in HYPNOSIS INDUCED TRANQUILIZER withdrawal that his wife used to passively provide to him. The non-acknowledgement but awareness that Vlad jr and Victoria sr had a really bad relationship, leading to Vlad jr ruining his relationship with Capella and their father having to separate the two when they were children. The standstill in his relationship with Capella, his unwillingness to let go of the resentment and frustration that he was abused by their mother for so long and that such is not openly addressed, but also unwilling to seek other avenues of support or recognize that venting about such to his much younger sister wasn’t healthy for her either.
Like this family would’ve never gone to therapy both from personality and it being 1910 but you get the sense that the door where family therapy would’ve neatly resolved and fixed things has shut.
Like Vlad jr is “right” and valid to be upset and resentful that his mother abused him and his father refuses to openly acknowledge it — but Far Vlad is also “right” that that sort of venting IS inappropriate for him to be lodging at his kid sister and if he won’t self-regulate and NOT talk to her about how her mother she didn’t know was evil and never loved her — prioritizing the well being of the smaller child and getting her away from her brother makes sense. But now they’re all just. Stuck in this standstill because nothings gotten better.

Idk I thought you might find this story funny because I don’t know who else to share it with but my toxic pathologic fan trait is that for some reason I memorized and kept track of the ages of every character when I played the game WHILE being a huge Isidor fan (I think his pre P2 corruption “beloved golden child destined to lead everyone and gifted with natural charisma who grows up to betray and exploit everyone who trusted him to protect them” is very interesting and fun. It’s like if Big Boss’s interpretation of the Boss’s words were right and she was just insane) so I am constantly plagued by amazing pre-game fics being suddenly interrupted by Olgimsky, Victor, Saburov, Mark, etc. being inexplicably 20-30 years older than they are in canon. I’m so sorry smut writers but Saburov could not attend sexy-20-some Isidor’s orgy because he wouldn’t have been BORN YET (none of this is a serious gripe I just think that this is something only I notice and therefore am distracted by is extremely funny)
a lot of ages in p1 specifically make no damn sense (rubin 23? willow mellow 15-17? for that last one someone in that team is going to jail) but considering isidor and vlad sr's sons are of the same age-ish and vlad sr & saburov are 6 yrs apart (50yo [stated in text] & 44yo [stated in archived vk] respectively) we can guess the age difference between isidor & saburov is not that big in the grand scheme of things/at the time of isidor's death [it would have been substantial when they were younger but that's how age differences go]. but also simon was anywhere from 77 to 150+ so who knows out there. isidor could have been 700.
to be fair none of that is something i'd particularly think about outside of the very specific context of apparently reading saburov/isidor/others orgy fics which is not something anyone could waterboard the admission of out of me if i did such a thing but i guess someone has to & it won't be me so. love and light to you 👍

The parallel of Khan and Vlad jr both spending the duration of the game living away from their fathers in little hide-outs is so funny. Khan is a child unfairly expected to take on the burden of his adult family’s needs (ALSO in p1 he is shown to have been living in maria’s wing/Nina’s former which is SUPER interesting because Nina died YEARS ago and I think that demonstrates a really interesting separation and level of emotional neglect between Khan and his father and remaining uncle)
Meanwhile Vlad jr is enabled by his status + Vlad sr’s hands-off approach to family management (extremely funny that he both knows about and doesn’t care about Capella’s child mafia. She started this herself and he’s completely happy to let her do as she wants especially as it doesn’t directly involve or impede him or his business) to perpetually act like a child, his relationship with his sister is awful because he can’t take responsibility for his own emotional needs and won’t stop himself from upsetting or boring her by ranting about his trauma with the dead mother she barely knew or talking about something she doesn’t know or care anything about. He arrogantly prods too far into his kin studies without regard for the consequences and then hides from them in a “secret” clubhouse that seemingly everyone knows about.
YEAH it's such a hilarious parallel honestly and i am... kind of disappointed now that i've played both pathologic classic hd and pathologic 2 that they changed the kain and olgimsky family dynamics around so much? i don't actually have anything particularly intelligent to say here just that you're right (and also capella's child mafia is such a funny way to phrase it).
also PLEASE continue to put things about young vlad in my inbox i may not be capable of a Long And Informed Reply but i am boiling your opinions up into the stock for a delicious soup
(also: paging @nerdkiller bc i know khan is your Boy.)

The Saburovs are the main family most closely connected to the Changeling, the Kains are most closely connected to the Bachelor, the Olgimskies are most closely connected to the Haruspex. All Saburovs and Kains are on the Bound List, meaning they must survive at least until the final day. The player must save them. However both Vlads Olgimsky are unBound and in fact there is no possibility that they both survive in Classic. Combined with the (apparent) note in Patho Alpha that Vlad Sr. Gave the bandits explicit orders to kill Artemy, and just the way both Vlads comport themselves, the reading is that the Vlads Olgimsky need to be punished. Clearly they do out-of-game, but many and great sins in-game can be written off (everything the Saburovs and Kains do), so it stands out that the Olgimskies are the ones that can, should, must, and will pay with their lives.
In Patho 2 the option to save both of them then stands out, partly in line with the lighter-and-softer tone of that game. It feels wrong and unfitting considering how they are the two most evil men in a game made up of evil men. Yet maybe it doesn’t clang so badly; the Diurnal ending isn’t the good ending, neither ending is good, the Diurnal ending is where the world Artemy is attached to is upheld at the cost of his attachment to it. His friends stay and he is forever estranged from him. So then it maybe is that the lack of retribution for the Vlads and their clear refusal to learn any lessons is a part and parcel of that, while Artemy may mourn the Utopians and Outsiders in the Nocturnal ending, it’s by far the better one.

The fact that I've written shippy fic for pretty much all the characters in Pathologic (and yes that includes Georgiy Kain, Vlad Olgimsky Sr, and Vlad Olgimsky Jr, each with their own pairings) is extremely sexy of me.

The hardest thing about writing Artemy is knowing I’ll never be as funny as him I mean look
Haruspex: “Rubin isn't here, kids! We got zero Rubins left in stock.”
"Wench": Why aren't you running away? Aren't you scared? Boo!
Haruspex: Oh, right, sorry. I am. Running away now.
Kid: Racing train. Fast-faster-fastest train. Speedy. Lightning-quick. Uh... Immediate. Ugh... I guess I'm choosing wrong names.
Haruspex: For the train? Try swearing.
Worker: Which department are you from, pal? Cutting?
Haruspex: In a way.
Haruspex: Hospitality is an important tradition in my family. But to you, I'll deny it.
Stakh Rubin: Yesterday, I was told you had killed your father.
Haruspex: Oh, of course! I finally achieved my childhood dream!
Stakh Rubin: How did you find me?
Haruspex: Everything's covered in blood. Hey, why is that?/ Haruspex: The lamp by the door, you grand conspirator.
(I couldn’t choose a response, they were both too funny)
Stakh Rubin: You're an idiot.
Haruspex: I agree. But I'm a stubborn idiot.
Yulia Lyuricheva: Thank you. I think the academic world in the Capital may have a couple questions regarding the subject of my research. Perhaps you'd like to come with me? As an assistant and... well, the subject.
Haruspex: An ass-what? You know me, Yulia. Artemy no like big words.
Yulia Lyuricheva: To make people desire new things. Weird things. Things beyond their limits.
Haruspex: ...Does that <really> demand making roads so confusing?
“Big Vlad. Fat Vlad. Vlad Sr. Vlad Olgimsky.”
Haruspex: “All four of them? What a vote of confidence!
Bad Grief: Hell if I know! Can't make heads or tails of 'em now. If you squint, Piecework does kinda resemble you-a sturdy man. Perhaps he did take a few hits to the noggin in your stead. How do you feel about that?
Haruspex: About guilt trips? I don't like them.
Like we all love noble yet exhausted DILF Artemy, but the bastard is funny as hell too! Goddamn!

Daemon AU returns! Featuring the Olgimsky’s. Started this set months ago but waffled so much on Capella’s animal and had so much other stuff to draw that I practically forgot about it. Wall of text under the cut. c:
Capella - Stork
“One day, I will grow real wings. Heavy, lifting wings...”
After the Polyhedron falls, the daemons of the town’s adolescents mysteriously settle all at once. For Capella I knew I wanted a bird, and went through a lot of options before settling on a stork. In myths, storks are associated with delivering babies, which I felt appropriate for the leader of the town’s children, whilst also echoing Victoria Sr’s swan daemon. (Victoria was sometimes called “White Swan” according to the wiki!)
Other forms I considered included capybara, a ferret, a cassowary, and a butterfly, so let’s just say those were Thomkin’s preferred forms pre-settling. X) (I picked the name with a cute, fluffy creature in mind then never bothered to change it.)
-
Vlad Jr - Lurcher/Staghound
Here’s where I admit my process for picking daemons is like 30% animal symbolism and 70% aesthetics and vibes. Look at her, she has a little mustache. A large game hunting dog/herding dog cross felt appropriate for the heir to the Bull Project- a working animal, but one set apart from those it was bred to oppress. Domesticated, but not the one that ends up getting eaten. A working dog is at the intersection of loyalty and intelligence but also obedience and lack of independence. Eudora is always close to Vlad’s heels- practically tripping him up at times. A nervous and ungainly creature that adores its master unquestioningly. Her tail tends to betray Vlad’s state of mind.
For the name, I wanted something warm and loyal-sounding.
Eudora = Eu  (“true”- Greek) + doré  (“gold”- French)
(It also sounds a little like "adore". At least that was my reasoning, then I found out Eudora is an actual name in Greek, and means “good gift”!)
-
Vlad Sr - Babirusa
On your right you’ll see a capitalist pig, and a wild boar standing next to him SJDFHKSJD
Apart from that awfully tongue-in-cheek association, the babirusa is a species with a very strange defect, possessing tusks that will continuously grow, sometimes until they pierce the creature’s own skull and kill it. Unchecked growth to the point of harm felt like an apt analogy for the kind of ruthless capitalist Boos Vlad is. This one was very easy to pick.
The name “Nagoya” was pulled from Nago, the vengeful boar demon from Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, who ironically became a demon due to the exploitation of its environment. I can’t remember if daemons can eat or drink in HDM, but I’ve decided that Nagoya does- she gets her own glass of wine at parties, and is very discriminating about the quality of roast beef.

Ольгимские
The Olgimskys control the Bull Project, and thus all urban production and trade. They do not disdain dubious methods to manage their profits, but are respected among the Order. The current Mistress of the Olgimsky's is Capella, who was proceeded by her mother Victoria Olgimskaya.
Capella believes in the Termites and sponsors the Haruspex, while Vlad Olgimsky Jr follows the belief of the Utopians. Vlad Olgimsky Sr is unaffiliated with any of the factions in town, and seems to be serving in self interest.

Since I’ve discovered you can get the opinion of other characters about the character your are talking to, in Patho 1, I try to read those about every characters I come across.
Rest under read more bc images + ramblings
Some made me feel things I didn’t expect, like Saburov’s and Rubin’s opinions on each others :
Tumblr media
Alexander Saburov’s take on him : “A strong person in every sense of the word. He can break your neck or set your dislocated joint equally easily. A very gifted autodidact. His main concern is the others, never the man himself. A selfless man of principle. Someone you can always rely on.”
Vlad Olgimsky’s take : “He was old Burakh’s best student. Wilful. Headstrong. Sturdy. He will always do what he believes to be the right thing and be stubborn as a mule about it. It’s almost impossible to find a common tongue with him. He doesn’t respect any authority, except for that of his precious master...”
Tumblr media
Yulia Lyuricheva’s take on him : “He is a husband worthy of his wife. Whatever power each one of the ruling houses possesses is predicated upon a kind of dependable amalgation between the preternatural power wielded by the Misstress and the magisterial injuctions issued by the head of the family. However, Katerina is known to be sterile, which leaves Saburov with nothing but brute domineering. As soon as the moment is right, Saburov will attempt to seize absolute administrative power. In doing so he will compensate himself for the debilitating misery of his spouse.”
Rubin’s take : “Alexander is a hero. When fire broke out in the Skinners, he took a pike pole into his own hands to break into burning houses, save people, and put out fire. That’s just how it was. Curiously enough, he kept his incognito back then and emerged from the ordeal unrecognized; neither did he flaunt his feat later. The truth came out accidentally. That is a very typical situation; Alexander is just that - an everyday hero who often demands no credit. It’s a very unique kind of heroism.”
Like... That was not the first opinion from Saburov I saw, and the ones I saw (about Vlad Sr. and Georgy Kain, so I didn’t expect glowing reviews but still) all had very critical aspects of the people he talks about in them. And then their mutual opinion on each others is absolutely glowing ?? The admiration that you can sense in it ? They both are just “this man is great, damn”
Also the contrast of Saburov’s admiration VS Vlad Sr. frustration of dealing with Rubin is just. delightful. “He doesn’t respect any authority except for that of his precious master...”  y e a h  or maybe he just doesn’t respect you, Vlad Sr., maybe that’s just that. ‘cause he seems to have plenty of respect for Saburov, according to his take on the man.
(Also - Yulia always has v wordy opinions, and she’s also extremely keen in most of what she says, which I always find interesting when you get to have her opinion on others !)
But also I do like how the opinions of the characters give you also explore aspects of their characters or just add to them, like Katerina’s and Sticky’s opinion on Aspity :
Tumblr media
Katerina’s take on her : “However odd, Aspity is a good person. She talks about death all the time. She asked me once why there is no Saburova Tomb at the Stone Yard cape and when it was about to appear - and she looked so innocent. She respects me as a Mistress, and that is something I cannot simply brush aside, since my followers abandon and betray me with each passing day...”
Sticky’s take :
“Such a mysterious creature. No one knows how she came to be in this town. Unlike others, she’s not in danger because she’s immortal like Simon. They also say that when Simon had cast off all the evil within his heart, the Steppe produced bones for her body, and that’s how Aspity was born.”
Katerina’s opinion seems to tell more about Katerina herself than about Aspity, which I find extremely interesting. Katerina does tend to reveal a lot about herself in the way she talks, especially compared to more manipulative characters like Maria. She often leaves information about her own state when you directly talk to her, but even when asked about her opinion on Aspity, she does make it obvious that her position as a Mistress is tenuous and she doesn’t have the respect that is generally given to that position. I feel like it says so much more about Katerina than it says about Aspity !
Sticky, on the other hand, reporting on the town’s rumors ? Considering the first time you meet him in the Bachelor’s route, it’s exactly so he can tell you about what he hears in the streets ? I like that !! Cool tiny detail !
And then I met Clara and...
Tumblr media
WELL KEEP YOUR SECRETS, THEN, CLARA
okay I guess it will be the same when I finally meet Artemy ? Maybe ? ‘cause they are the other two healers and all that. But I had a slight moment when I got this. Everyone tells me all about the Changeling being a little thieving gremlin, but if I want to check the opinion of people about her ? No. Secret.

Nocturnal, Herb Bride and Bones ✿
Nocturnal; least favourite character?
oh boy...this is bound to open up a whole can of worms because with the exception of the vlads, each patho character has a staunch defender.
i don’t like how patho2 did aglaya or block. i liked them a lot better in classic. i don’t dislike them in 2, but i felt like a lot of their characterization disintegrated.
for classic... i’m kicking a hornet’s nest here but saburov, and though she’s funny, the stuff aspity says about women in bachelor’s route is honestly kind of disgusting. i never see anyone talk about it, and granted i think she’s still kind of funny, but...
and then obviously i hate vlad sr, especially in classic, but he’s just easy pickings at this point.
Herb Bride; favourite song from the soundtrack?
here i will go with songs from pathologic 2 >:)c
plague awake here. higher than the sky, which even without knowing the name made me think of my agoraphobia. disappearing. darkness, though, is probably my favorite of them all... it sets the scene very well.
Bones; the Kains’, Saburovs’, or Olgimskys’?
the kains.
pathologic ask meme!
