Natalie Nicole Gilbert “What Child Of Kings”
Tumblr media
Multi-award winning vocalist, songwriter, and producer Natalie Nicole Gilbert shows her musical versatility and emotional breadth in her new nostalgic album, Warm Winter (Orchard). Having released over a dozen albums of original music ranging from EDM to jazz to alt pop rock, Gilbert delves into putting her own spin on an eclectic mix of 10 iconic songs written by some of the most notable songwriters of our time, including David Foster, Joni Mitchell and Andrew Lloyd Webber. To create the album, Gilbert collaborated with a multi-faceted team of music heavyweights, including composer and violinist Andrew Joslyn, (Leslie Odom Jr., Macklemore and Lewis, Suzanne Vega), songwriter, composer, orchestrator, film scorer and multi-instrumentalist Dana Bisignano (Oprah, VH1, and Curb Your Enthusiasm), and multiple award-winning TV and film composer Jonathan Still (Dancing With The Stars, Shameless, Inside the NFL). Warm Winter now on all digital music platforms. Gilbert’s Warm Winter album consists of her unique re-imaginings of 10 songs from a smorgasbord of genres. The songs range from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rendition of a centuries old Latin hymn “Pie Jesu”, to a contemporary mashup of “What Child Is This” over the melody of “We Three Kings” in “What Child of Kings”; to Gilbert’s ambitious covers of Joni Mitchell’s 1971 Christmas folk song “River”, Fleetwood Mac’s 1974 “Landslide”, David Foster’s 1990 “Grown Up Christmas List” and Harry Styles’s 2019 melancholy “Falling”. “Walking in the Air”, is from the children’s TV animated film, The Snowman, and “Wrapped Up in a Dream Called You” brings lush traditional jazz to the album. Guest artists on the album include vocalist Lisa Ramey (NBC’s The Voice) and Grammy Award winning vocalist/songwriter/producer Jarrett Johnson (Take 6, Michael Bubl, Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino) on “That Will Be Christmas”. Strings were provided by Andrew Joslyn who played violin and viola on 7 of the 10 tracks, along with Eli Weinberger (Manahem Pressler, Macklemore and Lewis) on cello. Jonathan Still provided the piano and arrangement of “What Child Of Kings”, and Dana Bisignano provided piano on four of the tracks. Warren Pettey adds a soulful jazz piano in “Falling”, “Grown Up Christmas List” and “Landslide”. “Wrapped Up in a Dream Called You” features Steve Rice (who also co-wrote the song) on piano and Jay Thomas on the tenor sax solo, joined by Devan Stovall on drums and Cary Black on bass. The album was co-produced by Gilbert and Latin Grammy-nominated producer, recording engineer, DJ and remixer Robert Eibach. He also provided the beats and instrumentation on “That Will Be Christmas”. LA-based Natalie Nicole Gilbert comes from a musical family heritage with a pianist mother who played with Liberace, a vocalist sister into love songs from every era, a brother in a rock band, and a father whose tech engineer mind led him to work for Lockheed Martin. Gilbert’s career has included collaborations with a number of film composers and musicians of a wide array of genres ranging from EDM to classic jazz to alt pop rock. Today, Gilbert is a voting member of the Recording Academy with 12 solo albums and an additional seventeen singles to her credit. In addition to her music, she has more than 10 years in broadcast radio as a radio host and voiceover talent, and has done national commercials for McDonalds, Cadillac, Quiznos, and other well-known brands. She built her home recording studio in 2005 when it was still a relatively new practice, and continues to produce and co-produce her own music. Gilbert is also a session vocalist for the Dublin Studio Hub, and film and TV composer with Music + Pictures, whose credits include Law and Order, The Office, and many others worldwide. She brings her extensive knowledge of what is radio-ready and what is easiest to license for film & TV to her own acoustic and electric songs. Warm Winter Track list: 1. Falling (Extended Cut) 2. The News: Mostly Good
I’m in a funny mood at the moment. Certainly not funny-haha. Funny strange.
For the record, I survived back surgery, and it looks like the ultimate outcome will be success--but, I am taking inventory. You know, “Let me count the ways,” and giving thanks for this, and all I have in this world.
We live in a comfortable home, not fancy, but welcoming. It sits on a parcel that is magical and productive, more or less rural, though much more fashionable than it was when my parents bought it. It is a bit of work, but manageable. Not a showcase, but a comforting place.
Tumblr media
We weathered the horrible firestorm of last fall. Some of our neighbors lost everything and are either trying to rebuild or are selling out, if they just can’t take the aftermath. I am grateful that our losses were low, even if terrifyingly close.
I can walk with a cane or a walker. I was able to step off a curb and into our little car following my surgery (my eighth in four years) last week. On the way home, I felt every bump on the road, but I felt it. No paralysis or numbness. There was a huge traffic jam on the way home, but a truck driver idling next to our car rolled down his window and let us get into the turn lane towards home. He gave me a smile, too, much treasured.
As we bumped and thumped over the potholes, I was transfixed by the beauty out the window. There were big, rolling fields of grape vines, some pastures with cows and my favorite, a field of Clydesdale horses, the one with plumpish hocks and wide necks. The ones who know everyone loves them.
I began my litany again. Basically, as my late friend, Angus Mackenzie told me when he fought cancer: “That’s the thing about pain, if you don’t have it, you actually aren’t alive.”
I’m not paralyzed, I’m not numb. I am headed home. I have a home. The heat is unavoidable, but reassuring in a funny way.  And yes, we are blessed. We chose this little place my father used to call Hummingbird Hotel.
Tumblr media
The surgery had a few complications, but I’ve managed. I feel closer to Peter than can be imagined. I am able to get up, walk around the house, and manage my pain. I sometimes feel rotten, but I am trying to be kind and thankful. I even did a small number of dishes the night we came home. These things are hard on spouses—the feeling of necessary support and assistance can be overwhelming. I know, because I’ve done it, too. But, for the most part, it is quiet here, nurturing and, yes, happy. Such things can be evasive when you are this sick. I am listening to Piazzola and feeling lucky.
Tumblr media
We had a wonderful afternoon in the  midst of all this soul searching and healing, when Christian de la O and Cynthia Linville stopped in Sebastopol and lunched with us at Lowell’s. We laughed and talked and shared life for a couple of welcomed hours. I felt good, just sitting aside my friends without much ado. The way life should be. My next goal is to attend Cynthia’s reading with Katy Brown in Davis if all goes well. In the meantime, I look to the garden; it grows for me.
Tumblr media
And yes, more is ahead. Next Wednesday, I will have a procedure to see why my port failed in the operating room at UCSF, and get a repair or a replacement. I worry, of course. Think good thoughts about big, lush veins that run like inexhaustible rivers! Then, a couple of days later, the stitches come out of the back, hopefully, here in Sonoma County. Perhaps the heat wave will subside by then, my spirits will be higher and the smoky skies will be bright blue again. I will leave you again with my thanks, for without you, nothing is possible. Here is a short poem I wrote recently that says it all. Life is why we are here.
Bells
Perhaps you listen to a gentle bell
That whispers, unbroken
Softly rising, a bell of
Quietude and near silence
A bell ringing like a rope
On a mast in a soft salt breeze
A story of itself
A story of you and none other
Are you the bell that rings
Or the bell that rings for you?
A song of a right life
The bell of satisfaction
The joyous contentment
Of a bell well rung

Natalie Nicole Gilbert “Pie Jesu” now available to AC radio
Tumblr media
From Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, a hymn for the holidays and funerals. Violin, Viola and String Arrangement by Andrew Joslyn, Cello by Eli Weinberger, Vocals by Natalie Nicole Gilbert. Natalie Nicole Gilbert’s “Warm Winter” doesn’t pretend to be the usual upbeat holiday album; for that matter its more winter than holiday in theme. Off the bat the EP starts with a song of heartbreak (Falling, a Harry Styles piano ballad cover), lovingly overlaid with lush strings 28 tracks of violins, violas and cellos in full holiday form. Styles Falling lyrics asking What if I’m down? and What if I’m someone I don’t want around? has a different and even more honest ring in a Covid lockdown era. Picking up the pieces the track list slides into a romantic jazz piece before returning to melancholy meandering through Vincent van Gogh’s snow laden landscapes in Starry, Starry Night. The tracks catapult us back to wizened optimism with a beat driven That Will Be Christmas (with Take 6’s Grammy nominated Jarret Johnson and Lisa Ramey of the Voice) on to a child-like pursuit of world peace in Grown Up Christmas List. Some will recognize Walking in the Air from the long popular movie The Snowman (sung in the original rendition by a St. Paul’s Cathedral choirboy, now lushly met with all the ethereal texture 2020 can provide). The first recording for the new album began in August 2019 when Dana Bisignano and Natalie Nicole Gilbert worked up a winter lullaby rendering of Vincent (Starry, Starry #NatalieNicoleGilbert #PieJesu Read the full article
