At some point in practically every course I teach, I have to stop and explain that gender is what scholars say when they mean the arbitrary rules that we apply to men and women. To illustrate, I take one of my shoulder bags, and and then my husband's man bag and point out that neither my female shoulders nor my husband's shoulders bar us from using each other's bags, and yet he would not be seen dead carrying my purse, and I think his man bag is pretty boring.

This exhibition in Mumford, New York, runs through 2024 and offers you examples of what 19th Century Americans wore, based on their sex, and how they argued about what a man or a woman could or should wear. As in, who should get to wear the pants?

(I briefly mentioned the one on the left in an IG video post and the history snippets were well received so hope to expand on this further 😍) Early C1940s (CC41 utility corsets) and C1952 post war girdle (top right) from my personal collection of vintage corsets @laced_unlaced •The UTILITY scheme was introduced in C1941 in response to the shortage of raw materials and labour for the War effort. Regulations were put in place restricting the amount of cloth, type of decoration and time taken to manufacture. •Utility clothing was marked with the CC41 'controlled commodity' mark. 1902 beachwear, American corset. Made of wool, bone, and metal. Starting to heat up here in Los Angeles, what is on your list of summer wardrobe needs? "Women who participated in these [seaside] outings wore modest bathing dresses or bathing costumes that many times were not meant to actually swim in, but rather as a more comfortable alternative to the many-layered ensembles of the period. Therefore, a corset was often required, even while bathing, which, along with an increased participation of women in other sporting activities, led to a burst of inventiveness in corset shapes and types to accommodate every possible activity. This example of a bathing corset is lightly boned, fairly non-restrictive and made of wool, as were many bathing suits of the time."
