It's been 3 days since I've finished my latest rewatch of Yuri!!! On Ice and I'm still reeling with all the small, gentle touches during Yuuri and Viktor exchange during the gala and how smoothly they are integrated into the choreography as a testimony of their love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These touches don't happen in the spur of the moment, they are well-practised details of the routine. Every little movement causes a change in momentum and movement and thus affects one's balance. Add a slippery surface and interactions with a partner to the equation and a fleeting touch turns into a feature that demands to be planned and excuted timely.
The touches being part of the routine takes away nothing from their significance - on the contrary. They show the love and care Yuuri and Viktor have poured into this routine and thus symbolise the love and care they poured into their relationship. They are a part of the story Yuuri and Viktor tell through this programme - the story of their love.
Note how at first, Yuuri skates alone. He's fighting alone, expressed through the jumps, copying Viktor and trying to catch up with him. There's a reason why the part until Viktor arrives is exactly the same as Viktor's FS. Then, Viktor takes over and pulls Yuuri along. He woos Yuuri and supports him [the lift]. Eventually, Yuuri reciprocates his feelings [the caress of Viktor's cheek and the soft, loving smile right afterwards].
Tumblr media
From there, they skate side-by-side as partners and skaters of equal skill, which gives us a glimpse into their future.
Eros portrays the physical and sensual aspects of Yuuri's feelings, Yuri On Ice showcases his love in a wider and more general sense and narrates the story of him and Viktor from his own viewpoint. In the gala version of Stammi Vicino, he and Viktor tell their story together in the grand conclusion of Yuuri's season theme.

AAAA!! I've only rewatched a few episodes of Yuri on Ice and I'm already losing my mind!!!
Ok so, in episode 2, Yurio tells Yuuri that Viktor's been practicing for the next season already. In the subtitled version, Yurio says:
"He (Viktor) was really torn. Surprising the audience has always been his top priority... but now, no matter what he does, nobody's surprised anymore... If you don't have any inspiration left, you're as good as dead."
Meanwhile, according to Minako, Viktor indicated to the press that "he was struck with inspiration" when he saw the video of Yuuri skating his routine.
In episode 1, Yuuri says he learned Viktor's routine because he wanted to find his love for skating again. He'd been depressed ever since losing, and this routine was his way of reconnecting with something meaningful so he could feel motivated again. He didn't even know his performance was doing the same thing for Viktor!!!!
No WONDER episode 1 cuts between Viktor and Yuuri performing the routine at the same time! They're both feeling lost and they both find meaning in this routine...but really it's through each other. THEY BOTH FIND MEANING IN THEIR ADMIRATION FOR EACH OTHER.
The first line of the show is Yuuri saying "he never fails to surprise me." This whole show is about two people inspiring each other to seize meaning in life again. THATS THE WHOLE SHOW BABY!! ITS LOVE!!!!

I sometimes (a LOT) think about Victor. I think about that bone-deep exhaustion we see come across his face when not even a minute after the gold medal ceremony, he's being asked about his next program.
I think about how lonely it must be, being an untouchable idol held to a standard with no one there to share it with him.
I think about those moments, his dog the only being in the world he lets in all the way, wondering when his world started to look gray. When "strength must be found on your own" became a slow and monotonous march toward misery.
When skating stopped feeling like a passion.
I think about Victor wondering what ever happened to Yuuri Katsuki, who got drunk and danced with him, who proclaimed be my coach only to disappear into the ether again, even though Worlds was in Tokyo.
I think about that trudge, when Victor is looking at two programs that both don't feel quite right, hearing about Yuri Plisetsky the new Russian phenom, who Victor obviously would be passing the baton to. How much more lonely that would be.
I think about Victor, sitting by himself at his apartment, snuggling his dog and watching Yuuri Katsuki suddenly blow up his phone again with a rendition of Stay Close to Me.
And remembering Be My Coach
I think about Victor's butterflies leaping from his stomach as he rehearses the perfect opening line, naked in the Katsuki onsen.
Then I think about Victor, adopted by the Katsukis and Hasetsu, falling in love, and watching as Yuuri falls in love in kind, not with the mask, not with the idol, not even with the skater.
With Vitya.

Yuuri's ambition and determination? The best thing ever.
He's so strong. Anyone reaching his level would have to be.
We meet Yuuri at his lowest point in the series: grieving. And he was spiraling from there, and still grieving. We meet him when he's experiencing a crisis, not his normal baseline.
I feel like that initial image makes it easy to characterize him as being saved by Viktor, but this would be wrong.
Viktor didn't save Yuuri. He didn't save Yuuri from his anxiety, Yuuri had working coping mechanisms. We see him going to skate and reconnect to his motivation with the help of a friend. He didn't save Yuuri from retiring, Yuuri's mindset is "I want to skate on the same ice as him" before Viktor reaches Hasetsu.
Viktor supported his growth, and Yuuri showed him how. Viktor didn't make him better.

Chapter 3 preview of Put It In Reverse For Thirst: my story about married Viktuuri writing a role-reversal fanfic
I love writing established Viktuuri stories, as it's a way for me to envision how comfortable Viktor and Yuuri would have grown with one another through the years, post-canon. I've especially had a blast writing this meta story, 'Put It In Reverse For Thirst', which is the cringy title that Yuuri and Viktor give the role-reversal fanfic that they write and then proceed to roleplay.
The premise of their fic is one where 23-year-old Viktor Nikiforov has just finished performing Eros in competition for the first time, after a year-and-a-half of working with his coach/idol: retired "Living Legend" Katsuki Yuuri.
And though Viktor gives the program a stellar debut, he's confused as to why Yuuri is so reticent in the Kiss and Cry. In misinterpreting the literal waves of sexual tension emanating from his coach, he believes that Yuuri is embarrassed by his performance. When he proceeds to confront him over his hurt feelings, their subsequent conversation takes a very sappy (and steamy) turn, which, of course, makes for a dynamic roleplay situation.
Chapter 3 might be my favorite to write so far, as it'll contain the extremely sappy love confession (which, of course, makes real life Viktuuri emotional when they're reading it). I wanted to post a preview, below -- FYI, anything in brackets with big spaces before and after is their fanfic, to distinguish from their 'real life' conversation -- which I hope piques your interest.
I hope you'll consider checking this story out, or my other Yuri!!! on Ice work!
---------
[Knowing what he knew now, that he must have seemed so diametrically opposite to what Yuuri had been expecting, which was the charismatic and gregarious Viktor Nikiforov in those banquet photos…
Well, the subsequent realization stole his breath.
Because it meant that Yuuri had seen him at his very worst, fully in the throes of his grief and depression, and had chosen to keep coaching him, anyway. Indeed, to keep coaching him long after the parameters of their relationship began to change, and once Viktor gradually found his way back to himself.
Did that mean what he hoped it did…what his hammering heart so fervently yearned for?
That somewhere along the way, that Yuuri had grown to realize that he needed Viktor, too? And, that just as Viktor’s heart grew ten sizes every time he opened up and discovered that Yuuri [Y: his Yusha] would meet him where he was, that perhaps it was the same for him, in turn?]
Viktor knew he’d failed to hide his sniffling when Yuuri paused to hug him (for what felt like the seven thousandth time, tonight).
“S-sorry, Yusha,” he whispered, actually having to bring a hand up to his mouth to try and quell the noise. “I guess the floodgates have really opened up.”
“Silly, what is there to be sorry for?” his spouse asked in reply, sounding equally choked up. “As if I could ever be upset with you for being so moved by anything, but especially this? It might be a role-reversal, but this is still our story.”
Viktor nodded, expelling a noise that was half-laugh, half-sob, his embarrassment vanishing when he observed the way that Yuuri’s eyes were similarly brimming over with feeling.
“I think we should update our tags,” he tearily mumbled, happily rising from his seat when he saw how Yuuri had scooted his chair back and extended his arm out in invitation. “After the ‘Men Crying’ tag, we could write in ‘and you might, too, if we did this right’.”
His husband made a sniffly noise of assent and tugged him onto his lap.
“Excellent idea, Vitya,” he affirmed, before encircling an arm around his waist and trying to coax him to rest his head against his chest.
“Can you take this off?” Viktor asked, tugging at the lapel of his suit jacket. “I don’t want to get snot and tears on it.”
Yuuri just gave him a knowing smile before doing as he’d asked, and he knew that he’d been found out; it always made him feel more grounded when he could listen to Yuuri’s heartbeat. As he lost himself to the steady thud in his ear, they both tried to compose themselves.
His love returned to reading a few minutes later, propping the current page of their draft in between two paperweights so that he could still hold onto him with both arms.
[“It’s suddenly very obvious to me why you came after seeing the video Georgi uploaded, but why did you let me stay in Hasetsu, afterwards?” Viktor shakily demanded, stepping out of Yuuri’s blissful hold.
“The Viktor Nikiforov that you danced with at the banquet, the one that made you feel alive…that’s the version of me you were looking for when you first came to St. Petersburg and then arranged for me to come back with you to Japan.”
It was a statement, not a question. As he looked into his coach’s bottomless gaze, he dared not read into the burgeoning softness in it.]

So I'm rewatching Yuri on Ice (yes, again, I know), and I just can't get over Viktor's facial expressions during his skate at the Worlds.
This first screencap is right at the beginning of his performance, which isn't based on the happiest song you've ever heard, sure, but it's about longing and heartbreak, but also love and being so in love with someone it hurts. Maybe he chose this song based on the banquet, maybe he didn't, but either way, he doesn't look in love or even like he's yearning for something.
He just looks incredibly tired.
Tumblr media
A bit further into the performance, still nothing. It's interesting, Viktor almost looks sad during the first few moments of it; tired, sure, but mostly sad.
Tumblr media
He lands his first quad, as expected, and he should be happy about it, confident at the very least, but he isn't. To be honest, I think Viktor is almost angry that he executed it perfectly the way he was supposed to. Before the next one, his signature move of all jumps, his face is different. Less sad, more distressed, bitter almost.
I think something a lot of people forget about Viktor (especially when they only see his mask) is the fact that he isn't content with his life while skating this, rather the complete opposite. He hates where he ended up, hates that he has, and is nothing but Figure Skater Viktor Nikiforov, Russia's Legend. Maybe he wanted to fail his jumps, just to feel more human, but he didn't. Honestly, I don't think he could do it even if he tried.
Tumblr media
After that jump, his face goes mostly blank. Some residual sadness, some acidic taste in his mouth, but this is where he becomes defeated. He knows he'll skate another gold medal performance, his streak will continue, and nothing will change.
Tumblr media
Viktor lands his jumps, performs perfectly, and all he probably feels is numb, dissociated from the reality of his situation. No nerves, no joy in his skating, just superficial boredom and no idea what to do with himself.
Tumblr media
Now, let's have a look at how Yuuri is skating this performance.
As small as it is, this is a smile. He talks about the joy he found within this program afterward, tells Yuko that this is one of his fondest memories.
Tumblr media
Yuuri doesn't look bored or detached like Viktor, he has his eyes closed, is at peace. His facial muscles are relaxed and there's a microscopic smile in the frame before this one.
Tumblr media
Once again, he is smiling at Yu-chan, enjoying himself, his skating, the program. Sure, he also looks sad at times, but he has a reason to be. He lost confidence in himself as both a person and a skater when he failed at the Grand Prix Final and the Nationals, lost part of his love for skating. So he turns to the one person who has caused him to fall in love with it in the first place - Viktor.
Tumblr media
This is Viktor after landing his last jump combination. Still dissociated, still bitter and upset at everything and himself, lost on the ice, the one place he found comfort in.
Tumblr media
And this is Yuuri after finishing. Happy, overjoyed that he managed to skate his idol's program perfectly, slightly embarrassed by Yu-chan's enthusiasm.
Tumblr media
I think this scene is so, so important for the rest of the anime. It shows where we start off: Viktor may have saved Yuuri's skating career and also had a major influence on his personal development, but Yuuri saved Viktor. Yuuri is the reason Viktor found his joy for skating again (another point that is super important at the end of the series but this post is already way too long), he is the reason Viktor started smiling real, personal smiles again. Viktor was so detached from the world nothing mattered to him anymore; finding Yuuri, finding a person that mattered to him more than anything else, that's what saved him.
It wasn't love, wasn't a magic cure for his issues, but it was a purpose to find joy for himself again.

Victuuri on Ice
Ok but can we just take a second to appreciate the fact that neither Victor nor Yuuri are Ice dancers/pair skaters.
Some important things to note about ice dancers/pair skaters:
1) The elements in Ice Dancing could not be more different than the elements required for men/women free skating - Because this is an exhibition skate, obviously ‘elements’ as such aren’t required, but the Victuuri gala skate includes some recognisable components of Ice dancing which, might I add, are INCREDIBLY difficult to do
Tumblr media
Lifts like these for example.
Tumblr media
I’m not entirely sure about this, but these look like the beginnings of a twizzle (don’t take my word for it I am by no means a skating expert) which are notoriously difficult to execute, let alone complete them in sync. Yet Victor and Yuuri performed each movement with ease, which only goes to showcase how talented both skaters are (i.e. Yuuri can shut his gorgeous but unreliable mouth on ‘dime a dozen’)
2) It takes YEARS for people to be comfortable with their partners on the ice. The difference is clear to see, when comparing newly paired up pair skaters/ice dancers and those who have had years of getting to know each other. When skating as a pair, you not only need to know your own body well, but you also have to be able to read into every little movement of your partner, in order to perform well. So the fact that Yuuri and Victor are so in sync with each other throughout the whole duet is not just a testament to their skill, but the love they have for each other. In such a short space of time, we see just how well they’ve come to know each other, read the other’s body language, and this is demonstrated multiple times throughout the anime:
Tumblr media
It’s moments like these where it’s so hard to believe that they haven’t known each other for longer. That they haven’t been skating together their whole life.
Although perhaps that’s not entirely true. Maybe the reason why they’re so compatible on and off the ice is because Yuuri has been skating alongside Victor his entire career, always trying to catch up to him and surpass him, but never quite managing to do so. Victor too, searching and searching for something or someone to take up the space in his lonely heart, but never quite finding it. I’d like to think that they have been skating for each other their whole lives, only just not quite knowing it. Maybe that’s what makes their pair skate so special, opening up to the world and meeting the other where they are.
Once again, take my ice dancing/pair skating knowledge with a whole cup full of salt, because I’m far from an expert. But the Victuuri pair skate just makes me so happy, it’s hard not to want to ramble on about it 24/7

It's Victuuri headcanon time!
(warning: slightly nsfw-ish?)
Victor must've spent so much time online looking for every little info about Yuuri after the banquet.
Maybe it wasn't even exactly "love at first sight" for him, but he definitely had a huge crush on Yuuri. The thirst was real, and Yuuri left him hanging.
So in his lonely hours in his empty apartment, again and again he found himself googling Yuuri's name, reading all the interviews he could find (even putting the Japanese ones in translators), looking at all the pictures of him and enlarging the high-quality ones so he could observe Yuuri's face closer, watching videos of his previous programs and interviews. He especially loved watching his TV interviews, adoring Yuuri's shy, modest smile and his little blush as he spoke to the hosts, noticing how he fidgeted with his hands embarrassedly; with every video he watched Victor felt himself becoming more and more infatuated with him. He occasionally saved a picture or two that he particularly liked: pics where Yuuri was skating, his movements frozen in time and showing off the beautiful curves of his body, or pics taken sneakily where Yuuri seemed casual enough that Victor could imagine how he must be off the ice. He hid the pictures in the depths of his phone, feeling like a silly teenager in love.
He often got fed up with himself after looking at Yuuri on the screen for too long, being annoyed with himself for missing someone that was never his, for probably seeing more in their one-night fling at the banquet than what it really was, for crushing on a man who probably wasn't even slightly interested in him as a person and who probably never thought about their brief flirting ever again.
He got even more fed up with himself when he closed all the tabs with Yuuri's way too beautiful face and put his phone down; staring at the dark ceiling he found himself thinking of the banquet again, remembering the softness of Yuuri's skin, the sloppy drunken smile of his that warmed up Victor's frozen heart, the way his hand fit so perfectly in his and the feeling of his warm touch on his waist as they danced, the scent of his shampoo he felt when Yuuri hugged him close, and the hot grind of those wicked hips against his. He felt embarrassed and stupid for touching himself while thinking about Yuuri, imagining all the different ways that drunken night could've ended if only he was a little braver, a little bolder, if only he wasn't afraid of people's opinions and invited Yuuri up to his hotel room, picturing all the things he wanted to do to him, all the things he wanted Yuuri to do to him. And after the bittersweet release, he felt stupid and childish again, like he was an obsessed fan instead of a world-famous skater, and so each time he decided it was the last time he gave in to the temptation, swearing to forget about Yuuri and that damn banquet both...
But the next day he found himself alone in the darkness of his living room again, with a picture of Yuuri opened up on his phone screen...

Sometimes I think about how Viktor Nikiforov may be one of the first queer Russian characters portrayed in media that young Russian folks who may be questioning their gender, sexuality and such ever see and even though Yuri On Ice is idyllic, I can’t imagine that it isn’t wonderful to see a character from your own country living happily with the man he’s in love with (even going as far as to kiss him on national television!), Yuri On Ice just doesn’t miss.
Even though it is a sports anime, that’s how they so intricately express their love to each other, through dancing and skating and becoming comfortable with their sexuality (Yuuri, for example!).
It’s just beautiful, I don’t know how else to describe it.

[Translated] Meta: A study in the progress of Viktuuri from Episode 7
This meta is translated from Chinese and is long, so be prepared. The writer has a deep and delicate understanding of both Victor and Yuuri’s states of mind, and I second almost everything he/she says here. I’ve also translated two lovely comments on the same thread, it just makes me feel incredibly sweet.
Link to original post. Translation is under the cut, I tried my best to keep most of the original meaning intact. Enjoy!
Since Episode 7 aired, everyone was debating whether it was a kiss, yet all hints point out that they have kissed, so I’m not going to discuss that here. This analysis is on the progress of Viktuuri from Victor’s point of view.
In fact, Victor’s feelings for Yuuri is evident as early as Episode 4, when he proposed acting as Yuuri’s “lover” as a way to motivate him. As Victor is self-centric, I don’t think he would disregard his feelings and jump into a relationship with someone he doesn’t feel anything for, so he must at least like Yuuri. But it still doesn’t mean that Victor likes him romantically because he says being Yuuri’s lover is something he has to work on. (Note: Chinese/English subtitles translation discrepancy, English subtitles goes: I will do my best, while the Chinese is something like I will need tos work on that.) Real love develops organically and is not something one can work on.
Obviously, Victor did not understand romantic love. I think he wouldn’t mind dating an attractive woman if she suggests it, given that he’s not already otherwise engaged, the reason would be along the lines of “she’s been trying so hard and I don’t want to upset her”. For Victor, perhaps romantic relationship can be understood as sending flowers and going to the cinema, gestures that can be performed and are quite superficial. These acts will please his romantic partners, but no one except Victor knows whether he really enjoying doing these, or if he simply thinks these are what “lovers” do.
From the way Victor treats his fans, we can tell that Victor would not rejects his admirers, and his charm takes effect on both sexes. Noticing Yuuri’s admiration, he deduces that Yuuri would be overjoyed if Victor becomes his lover, effectively using romantic relationship as a means to an end.
In Episode 6, before his SP Yuuri said “watch only me”, and Victor wondered “what’s wrong with him” (Note: again, translation discrepancy, the English subtitles are “don’t ever take your eyes off me” and “what flipped his switch”, which is arguably closer to the original Japanese). Victor had not yet realized his likes Yuuri too, and did not see Yuuri’s admiration as romantic. After all, if Victor understands that Yuuri has feelings for him in the romantic sense, an international heart-throb like him can’t miss very nature of lovers - one needs to be the sole attention of one’s lover.
Not until Episode 7 where they had that car park exchange did their relationship set off like a bomb. Victor thought threatening Yuuri with his resignation could yank Yuuri out of his anxiety and motivate him to win. I must solemnly say that Victor has failed as a coach here.
On the surface, Victor would be stepping down because he is incapable of coaching Yuuri, but in fact he would be resigning because Yuuri is not performing well. This will only add to Yuuri’s burden, I can’t not be concerned about Victor’s pitiably poor understanding of emotions. What surprises me most is how Victor was aware of Yuuri’s anxiety, yet still thought “breaking his glass heart” would motivate him, effectively making Yuuri more desperate. Despite his good intentions, it was what a horrible decision.
Imagine a Maths test coming up for a student who sucks at Maths. The Maths tutor has been doing everything he can to teach said student, and the affection is mutual. Surprisingly the tutor said “if you don’t do well in the test, I can’t go on teaching you because I’m incapable.” The student maybe willing to even work harder for it, but it would do nothing to ease his anxiety which will only increase. Victor was only thinking about the possibility of boosting Yuuri’s will power, but completely neglected how his words could defeat Yuuri, solid proof of his lack of experience and understanding of emotions.
Victor was distressed after posing his threat, seeing Yuuri cry made him realize he had made the wrong decision and  come clean about having no idea what he should do. At this point he asked “should I kiss you or something”, what a clueless man. Thank god he asked, or else Yuuri’s emotions would not go off like a bomb and resolution cannot be reached.
Here we see Victor treats kissing as a means to comfort Yuuri. To foreigners, maybe kissing is something friends would do. People of the same sex kiss and it doesn’t make them lovers, but it definitely makes them very intimate friends. Victor’s proposal suggests that they are close enough to kiss without awkwardness. The fact that Victor thinks kissing would be an effective solution to Yuuri’s problem hints that he had probably pacified his previous lovers the same way.
But Yuuri said it is not right. When Yuuri pleaded “just stay by my side” there was a close up on Victor’s eyes, looking as if he had never considered this before - company and trust are enough to inspire courage, no words or actions necessary. This is the first time Victor thinks about how he can offer support as a coach, upon realizing his shocking shortcoming he even regretted not seeking advice from Yakov. In fact, if Victor compares this experience with his previous romantic relationships, he may realize he has never truly loved anyone, but was merely playing the part of a lover. (Note: there is a meta analyzing that there are several ways to say no in Japanese, and in this case Yuuri’s “no” means “it’s not right”)
Some fans hold that Victor and Yuuri are already a couple by Episode 7, because Yuuri did not appear unwilling when Victor offered to kiss him, instead told Victor it’s not the right thing to do, proving therefore the two have kissed, but this problem is not one solvable by kissing. But I don’t buy this argument.
I think that their relationship has been ambiguous for a long time, it had outgrown friendship but was not yet a full blown romance. Yuuri’s skating relies a lot on engaging with his emotions, therefore he is possessive before competitions, but off rink he seldom actively pursued Victor. Although Victor is quite touchy-feely with Yuuri, he hadn’t really thought about what it means. This thin wall of ambiguity between them remains intact until Episode 7.
I love the scene where Yuuri bawled and pleaded with Victor to stay by his side and have faith in him. He rarely expresses the needs that he buries deep, making this scene especially moving. Yuuri needs Victor desperately, not for shallow comfort but for a trust much deeper. He turned down Victor’s kiss not because he didn’t want it, but because that was not the right time. Here we see that Yuuri’s feelings for Victor is not purely admiration. If Victor offered to kiss Yuuri during practices, I can imagine Yuuri not knowing how to react and treating it as one of Victor’s jokes. But in the car park emotions were running high, leaving absolutely no room for jokes and forcing Yuuri to spill his mind - not rejecting the kiss but saying that it’s not the right thing to do. Victor and Yuuri thus acted like a couple who have already confessed their feelings, and argued like lovers amidst this chaos - what amazing romantic progress.
(this paragraph is a comment on the thread by another user: They may not have realized their weight in each others’ hearts. Yuuri may have seen Victor as something like a deity->coach->friend->a significant person, and was worried that his failure would reflect badly on Victor thus pushing himself to a nervous breakdown. From previous episodes, Yuuri seemed to have got used to botching his programmes, but now that Victor has become his coach (at his own expense of taking a whole season off, whatever the reason was), like Chris said keeping Victor all to himself is a sin, and no one would want put a stain on his idol. Yuuri’s outburst made Victor realize how important he is to Yuuri.)
As Victor watched Yuuri performed, he couldn’t hide the emotional roller coaster ride he was going through, and his behaviour was remarkably different from that of previous episodes. When Yuuri over-rotated in Episode 7, his immediate reaction was to look away, but instantly he turned back to watch Yuuri again, clearly because he had processed what Yuuri told him in the car park. Throwback to when Yuuri missed his last jump in Episode 5, Victor closed his eyes in frustration. Back then he didn’t know Yuuri could have seen his reaction and lose confidence. But now he has learned that he should not look away because Yuuri makes a mistake, his gaze fuels Yuuri and is a way of staying by his side, it is what Yuuri taught him. When Yuuri changed the 4T to his own signature move the 4F, he became extremely emotional and it urges him to surprise Yuuri the way Yuuri surprised him.
In the short time span from Yuuri performing 4F to Victor rushing up to kiss him, Victor arrived at the conclusion that there is no better way to surprise Yuuri than kissing him. It means that 1) they have never kissed before, or else a kiss wouldn’t be a surprise, and 2) without deep thoughts Victor reached this conclusion because he had subconsciously wanted to kiss Yuuri long before that.
Victor probably intentionally shielded their kiss from the audience’s watch with his arm. If he really didn’t mind letting people see them kiss, he could have kissed Yuuri for much longer even after they fell on the ice. But it was such a short kiss, it looks like Victor did take Yuuri’s feelings into consideration.
They pretty much silently confirmed their relationship in the car park, hence Yuuri’s sweet, joyful expression after the kiss - he was a bit shy but not flustered. Their interaction at the interview was so natural, as if they hadn’t just kissed in front of international media and spectators… Never mind Victor, who says Yuuri is mentally weak!
(Another comment on the thread: During the interview, Victor jumped in front of Yuuri to protect him even though Yuuri wasn’t distressed by the media at all, and he once again (!) showed Yuuri off to the reporters! Previously Yuuri looked super uncomfortable when he did that, but this time his Victor-you’re-doing-that-again face is! Just! So! Sweet!)

Viktor: "The time to seduce me with beautiful women and katsudon is over. You can fight with your own charm now." Yuuri (suddenly all possessive): "Don't take your eyes off me!" Viktor (utterly clueless): He's so different today. I wonder what has flipped his switch.
Recently, I've found myself coming back to this scene over and over as I was reconsidering the link between the progress of Viktuuri and Yuuri's understanding of Eros. For years, I was convinced that Yuuri had grasped the concept of Eros in episode 6, but (and this is probably controversial) I no longer believe that is true.
So, what happens in episode 6?
While the events during the weeks between the press conference and the Cup of China are open to speculation, the subtext of episode 6 us some cues as to where Yuuri and Viktor currently are in their relationship (the hugging, the cuddling, you know).
In this sense, the short dialogue before Yuuri's short programme, tells us that:
So far, Yuuri hasn't seduced Viktor as himself.
Viktor thinks Yuuri is ready to do exactly that.
They are dating (note the lover's bind aka the lacing of the fingers, which is an expression of romantic intimacy in Japan)
Yuuri's reaction is untypically fierce and possessive.
Viktor has not the slightest clue what triggered Yuuri's response. When put into the context of the whole story, this gives us another hint that Yuuri possibly can't have seduced Viktor prior to the competition. If he had (be it on or off-ice), Viktor would no longer react surprised. (You can actually see the difference in episode 8).
Tumblr media
However, Yuuri and Viktor are in entirely different headspaces, which becomes obvious if we think back to the events in the mixed zone. Viktor feels that it's time to gently nudge Yuuri towards a more intimate stage of their relationship. However, Yuuri is upset because just learned that everyone wants Viktor to give up on him and return to competition. He is convinced that Viktor's fans will deem him a poor replacement for Viktor if Viktor keeps coaching him. He thinks that he would disappoint his own fans if the returns to where he was before Viktor. The only option left is pressing ahead on the path he's already on and thus works himself up into wanting to be hated as the man who took Viktor Nikiforov from the world.
With that mindset, Yuuri steps onto the ice.
Viktor's confused reaction when Yuuri storms off shows us something else: He doesn't have the slightest clue that Yuuri is upset because of things that happened right before the short programme. The subtext of the scene implies that he interprets Yuuri's reaction as a sign that Yuuri is indeed ready to seduce him. The lip-licking and all the sensuality Yuuri pours into his immaculate performance must seem from his perspective as if Yuuri truly wants him. He's not entirely wrong about that, but he isn't entirely right either.
Yuuri's eros is dominant and possessive. Several months have passed since the first time he skated Eros to seduce Viktor, but their relationship and Yuuri's understanding of Viktor has deepened since. His eros has evolved into a violent force of nature. His skating no longer is about "seducing" Viktor to stay his coach, he's showing the world (and Viktor) that Viktor is his and his alone and that he is all that Viktor wants ("I'm the only one who can satisfy Viktor. I'm the only one who understands Viktor's love"). And he goes out puling all the stops. And at the next competition, he's going to double down on that. Sounds kinky? It absolutely is.
Ever wonder why Viktor is so flustered right after Yuuri's skate? That's why. This precious boy felt seduced through-and-through by Yuuri's performance.
Tumblr media
Viktor: "Yuuri, did it feel that great?" Yuuri: "I was hoping everyone else felt great watching me." Viktor (basically talking about himself): "Of course, they felt great watching a performance like that."
Remember that I said that Viktor has a totally different grasp of the situation than Yuuri because he doesn't know what Yuuri is going through? Viktor projects his own state of arousal from watching Yuuri on Yuuri. But Yuuri is not a second Chris and his response reinforces the implications made above based his inner monologue before and during his performance: He wanted to give "the audience" a good time aka making Viktor feel seduced and convincing the skating world that he is worthy to skate in Viktor's stead.
Tumblr media
Learning that "everyone" (and most of all Viktor) had a "good time", is an important step for Yuuri in mastering his short programme:
In episode 6, Yuuri truly understands the power he has over Viktor and what he can do to Viktor with his skating alone.
So far, Yuuri has had a hard time grasping eros, using all kinds of workarounds (food, women etc.). He has refined this understanding as his relationship with Viktor deepened, he has learned to express himself in a sensual manner, but it doesn't come naturally to him. In episode 6, he finally understands that he has the power to turn Viktor on and what exactly he must do to achieve that. He's still using workarounds and these are 100% Yuuri, and because of that, they are successful. Even if he never understands eros beyond the abstract theory, he now has acquired the set of tools to hone is performance and to seduce Viktor if he sets his mind on it. (Yes, this anxious katsudon fatale has some massive kinks and they work for him and Viktor, and I will die on that hill.)
But what about the banquet?
Drunken horniness due to dancing physically with his celebrity crush. Friction is a thing. And let's be honest: otherwise, the whole "grasping eros" story arc would make no sense. Either you have an innate sense of that concept or you don't, and memory gaps can't explain that away.
(No, I'm still on a break from posting meta, but I've been agonising over this for quite a while and had to get it out of my system because I'm currently fixing some stuff related to this in my novelisation.)
If you like my meta, please check out my works on AO3 (link in bio).
Last but not least many thanks to cecebeanie for a discussion that set this thought process in motion 💜💙

I figured out why Viktor is so awful at seducing Yuuri
And I mean, for someone who has pretty much yearned for a guy for an entire year, it’s not like Viktor didn’t have enough time to mentally imagine and plan how he was going to seduce Yuuri.
Tumblr media
Like, what was this, Viktor? Just show up at his house naked unannounced, and immediately expect him to sleep with you? It literally took Viktor several months to even get a kiss from Yuuri.
So, why is he so appalling?
To be honest, I think it’s because Viktor has never pursued anybody himself. From a young age, he’s always been Viktor Nikiforov Figure Skating Legend, people naturally gravitate towards him. In general, too, rather than romantically.
We do know that Viktor has at some point done something with someone, as he mentions it in episode two. However, we see after his engagement to Yuuri that he’s neglected love in his life until now. Which would kind of make sense if Viktor only ‘dated’ people if they approached him, as relationships kind of need to be a mutual thing.
Also, don’t forget the Eros routine. As we learn, it’s a huge part of Viktor’s personality that he feels the need to surprise the audience. So, if he was planning to skate it, he must therefore not view seduction as a part of his own personality.
So Viktor has never courted anyone before, and has no experience on how to do it. I mean, who does he have for influences? Yakov? Georgi? Christophe? He had no hope.

Yuuri's free skate music.
Imagine you're Ketty Abelashvili, the composer who put together the music for Yuuri's skating career back in Detroit.
You're in school, trying to tease out of him anything that could help you, but he's so shy and withdrawn and seems to be completely allergic to talking about himself in ways that don't sound lukewarm and hard to parse.
So you do your best. And are not all that surprised when Yuuri apologizes (profusely) that he can't use your composition for his skate. He's gone with something that Celestino gave him.
You're actually sort of relieved.
Then imagine, a year later, getting a message from Phichit Chulanont--you were friends with him in Detroit, because everyone was friends with Phichit--about Yuuri Katsuki. Apparently he wants to give you and your composition another try. He's offering to pay you this time too.
You're out of school now, and you're trying to make it professionally as a musician. It's interesting to hear Yuuri wants to try again, but you're definitely sweating bullets. Then again, you figure you have enough experience now that you can take what he's saying and fill in the blanks with themes and inspiration elsewhere.
So you say yes.
You set up a chat, fully expecting the same downcast eyes and shy expressions of the previous Yuuri, the one you knew from Detroit. And sure, it starts out like that, because you're rehashing Yuuri's skating career. The one you knew about, and the one that is hard to talk about, when he crashed and burned.
Then though, comes the first mention of a name: Victor. You know he's talking about Victor Nikiforov--everyone knows that name, after all.
But what you're not expecting is the change. The way that the slumped shoulders straighten, the way that the quiet mumbles of replies are suddenly dancing from Yuuri's mouth, and he's smiling. No, it's more than that, he's lighting up. It's like he can't contain the joy that is exploding out of him talking about training with Victor, skating with Victor, planning with Victor, showing Victor around. It's so apparent that you almost mention it, but decide instead just to let Yuuri talk.
You can already tell your composition is changing. It's not about Yuuri's skating career anymore, per se, it's about love now. Because Yuuri is exploding with it.
You wonder if he hears himself, smiling and chuckling about "how Victor must not know how intimate putting his arm around a Japanese person is in an Onsen!", as if he truly does not understand that this probably goes both ways. In fact, you're sure of it.
Love that can explode out of someone talking about cleaning up stinky dog poop because a poodle snuck some fish speaks to two sides feeling love.
You thank Yuuri for the chat. You let him know that you will send him your composition in a couple of weeks. You tell him you'll be in touch if you need anything else.
But you don't think you do. Yuuri's love was abundantly clear on his face.
You can't wait to get to work.

Has there been any recent updates on ice adolescents or anything Yuri as a whole?
(anon 'cause im shy)
I don't mind! I have the anon option on purpose. Please feel free to send any ask, I love getting asks.
No real updates other than we might not get it after all. I don't know the real reason, I've seen speculation but I didn't dive into it. They said something about the profits - which, YOI was very profitable, but Mappa didn't get as big a cut as they could have from that. This might be the reason, or there might be others. Personally, I try not to think about that too much. I have ice ado tags muted because I just find it discouraging. Pining for it just takes away from my ability to enjoy this. So for me, I'm assuming Ice Ado isn't going to exist. If I end up being wrong, I'll be delighted. I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear.
I created for years from 12 episodes, and I can create for years still. I still have wonderful conversations with friends exploring those characters, and I fully enjoy the fandom with or without official content. I had conversations with a friend about what we want Viktor's past and Viktuuri's future to look like, the themes we'd explore in a sequel/prequel story, and it builds that up for me. I do plan to share those thoughts at some point, either as fic or as meta/headcanons.
I'm here to celebrate what I have, and if I'm given more, I'll celebrate that too. But if not, I'll keep enjoying this.
I'm slow with all the things I'm making, but I have so much to create and I'm enjoying all of my WIPs. I'll enjoy sharing them with whoever is still interested.

Chapter 2 of my 'married Viktuuri write and role-play fanfiction' story is up!
For all Yuri!!! on Ice fans that like to get meta: Chapter 2 of my post-canon, married Viktuuri story that centers around Yuuri and Viktor writing and acting out a role-reversal fanfic starring themselves is now up on ao3!
Their fic is one in which 23-year-old Viktor has just given a career-best performance, debuting 'Eros' at the Finlandia Trophy. But he can't understand why his 29-year-old coach -- retired "Living Legend" Katsuki Yuuri -- seems displeased in the Kiss and Cry.
As he comes to find out, Yuuri is very, very possessive of eros Viktor, and is less than stellar at hiding his jealousy over the fact that the entirety of Espoo Arena has just seen Viktor skate like he's trying to seduce them.
This is mostly a Viktor POV story, though the last chapter (currently slated to be Chapter 4) will be from Yuuri's POV.
Chapter 1 focuses on setting up the meta nature of my work (i.e. "real life" Viktor and Yuuri flirting/bantering before diving into reading their fic) as well as the beginnings of the story, where a hurt Viktor decides to confront his coach; Chapter 2 (just uploaded) features their fic selves getting closer to revealing their true feelings for one another; Chapter 3 will be focused around the eventual love confession and will contain smut; finally Chapter 4 is when Yuuri and Viktor will post their story online and go through the comments together.
I have had a BLAST writing this, and hope you'll consider checking it out and/or letting me know what your favorite meta fics yoi are!
Below is an excerpt from Chapter 2, to pique your interest (content note: implied sexual content):
-----------------
[“Because the truth is…watching you skate like that earlier, it felt so different than it ever did watching you at Ice Castle. Seeing you dance like that, knowing that every single person in Espoo Areena was seeing you skate as if you were seducing them, personally? When it hit me that I was no longer the only one who got to see you that way…well, it made me feel like I was crawling out of my skin with jealousy.”
The last phrase was uttered in something akin to a growl, and Viktor’s mind began to race, going over what he’d just heard.
"When it hit me that I was no longer the only one who got to see you that way… "
(!!!)
Holy fuck.]
“There’s my eloquent Viten’ka,” Yuuri teased in interruption, and for the second time in just the last hour, Viktor thumped him over the head with the Makka tissue box holder.
His husband’s very mature response was to grab at his ponytail so that now it was his chin that was getting tickled.
Yuuri finally elected to behave once Viktor threatened to cut out the entire scene starting from when he’d drop to his knees in order to treat his coach to an earth-shattering blowjob (which was meant to repay the favor for the heavenly rimming session that he’d just been gifted).
Smiling smugly at Yuuri’s cowed demeanor, he diverted his attention back to their fic.
[“And isn’t that just the most ridiculous and embarrassing thing?” his coach went on, laughing humorlessly.
Despite the question clearly being a rhetorical one, Viktor might have said something in reply if he could have managed to shake himself out of the giddy stupor that Yuuri’s explanation had brought about. Though he hadn’t touched any alcohol in weeks, his head spun as if he were thoroughly buzzed.
He was pulled from his reverie by the other man’s beautifully lilting, sonorous laugh, and his own heart-shaped smile flashed for an instant. That uplifting sound was filled with relief as well as something close to awe. Perhaps Yuuri was amazed – just as he was – that they were able to joke together, when just minutes ago it had felt like everything they’d built together was falling apart.]
