simon has a faint beauty mark near the corner of his left eye. it would be visible through the mask if it weren't for the eyeblack he smears all over it.
the number of people alive who have seen the light brown freckle could be counted on one hand, you among them. you kiss it everytime he lets you wipe off his paint and you can feel his ears burning red and hot under your hands. he can't make eye contact when you're looking at him with so much reverence. why aren't you repulsed? why aren't you flinching? he's used to being met with eyes filled with terror and hatred so the love and devotion in yours is quite jarring. he doesn't know how you got so close to him. simon doesn't know when he went from spending leave on base, shut away in his barracks chainsmoking and drinking, to itching to get back home to you. a man who poured acid over and corroded every part of him that showed emotion now shakes his leg, all antsy, when the debrief gets too long, hindering him from falling into your embrace.
you're on his lap, a hand holding the side of his face to keep him still and another wiping off his eyeblack gently - you don't like the way he scrubs at his skin so you do it for him. simon's hands shake as he rests them on your hips, his touch soft, as if he were making sure that this wasn't a dream. he wants to kiss you but if he kisses you he can't keep looking at you so he stays put and lets you wipe away his violence. simon can't remember the last time someone this close to him wasn't trying to stab him and claw his life away. this is nice, he thinks. and even if you wanted to make him bleed - he'd let you, he thinks.

i am a firm believer that simon shows his love. simon loves so hard in the quiet ways. never makes a big deal but you always notice. slips on the most beautiful ring onto your thumb when you're sleeping. brings home flowers and puts it in a vase while you're in the shower so you don't even notice immediately when you come out. randomly buys things you've been wanting and just leaving them around the house with no mention whatsoever. and he'll never bring any of it up, it's always you noticing and gushing in gratitude while chastising him for spending so much money on you. i just think he has so much love to give and instead of telling you, he'd rather show you. he hopes you know how much he loves you. he hopes you know that his heart thumps your name and the blood coursing through him belongs to you. he hopes you know.

simon who traces the scribbles on your hand every night before you both fall asleep. and he's sleepy with droopy eyes when he traces every letter and every arrow. he'll wait for you to elaborate when he's done outlining a bullet point and when he can't read your scrawled writing, he bumps his head gently to yours where it's laying on his chest to make you look up at him. he asks, "what's this?" and hums when you tell him.
he's tried to buy your notebooks and little journals but you'd always excuse your colourful hand with "it's just convenient!". he's since stopped trying to get you to quit destroying your skin bc tracing and kissing your hands is so grounding to him. reminds him just before sleep that he's home. he's with you. he's safe.

this could be a very niche post but i mourn dido. she was a refugee who built a civilisation from the ground up!! she was a queen!! she was everything aeneas needed to be!! when we first meet her, she's compared to diana. diana goddess of the moon, diana goddess of the hunt. dido was so radiant and loving and warm, even without venus' fatal meddling, she opened her arms to the trojans and welcomed them to her land.
dido of carthage was such a powerful woman, she was the epitome of a person - she was pious, she was strong and she was so, so beautiful. venus ruins her. venus is a real villain of the trojan war and it does not get talked about enough‼️ yes the whole helen thing but cmon!! dido!! venus ruined dido's life - this rational, calm-headed woman is rendered a helpless victim to Love and its follies.
she believes her and aeneas to be married and then he just turns around and walks out on her. (I don't blame aeneas, i actually really like him. he too was a victim of the gods' whimsies - "I seek Italy not of my own will.") but it ruins her. aeneas has up and left and with it venus' interest in dido wanes but the arrow of desire remains stuck in her very soul, staining sticky red love all over her life.
when i think about dido's death i honestly get so sad because the last cry for help to diana when the priestess is performing the death rituals is just fucking heartbreaking. it's a jarring reminder of how dido used to be before aeneas, before the gods sunk their claws into her life.
beautiful dido, who glowed like the moon, now lies dead and burnt to ash on a pile of clothes and carvings of a man who never even loved her.

i'm violet and i spend way too much time on this app so here's a little bit about me!
my online name is violet after the character in lemony snicket's 'a series of unfortunate events' - that book series just consumed my every thought as a kid and her name was always a favourite of mine. my user, iite-cool, is from an album of a korean rnb artist called dpr live. i don't listen to him anymore but it's a good album and i'm afraid my blog wont be recognisable if i change its name now.
i love classical mythology and study classics (with latin) - my favourite myth has to be persephone and hades [cliche, i know, but it's the one that got me into mythology when i was a child]. i also love languages and study french.
i am tamil and i am queer!
current hobbies: i've been trying my hand at film photography, collecting vinyls and i knit (i've been knitting the same thing for about 3 years and god knows it's not getting done anytime soon)
