Personal Journal (Theodore Srivastava, MBBS-MD) / Entry 0864 / 2559-10
>>: The recovered individuals had required extensive medical care on arrival, and a battery of diagnostic testing to understand their biology enough to successfully deliver treatment and establish a safe continuity. Commander Mallah had offered to loan me a few techs from the Xeno lab for consultation. For humans.
Their rate of healing has been extraordinary however, and there's blessedly no signs of preliminary rejection to organ tissue, structural implantation, or soft tissue grafts. Primarily just scattered ecchymosis for two out of the three. It's remarkable. Examination is on-going, several rounds daily, and expected to continue for a series of weeks to establish more reliable trends.
They'll be with us for the duration of course.
There's nowhere else to go.
We've learned that the individuals represent a third generation of Spartans, and their...atypical lab results have been casting long shadows to say the least. More of the UNSC's deeply forbidden secrets are filling our charts in waves and creating a lot of unease regarding this sub-category's uniquely dangerous mutagenic traits. These features are remarkable for organic changes in their brain tissue and gross manipulation of the endocrine system. Even considering the total divorce of human ethics that the Spartan programme already represents, this seems a startling escalation.
What is happening back home to have prompted such a chilling devaluation of human life?
The discomfort amongst my staff is overwhelming their fascination.
It's not yet clear if the Spirit's limited facilities can even maintain the critical needs of these new and terrifying soldiers. What is the margin for error on the consistency of their 'smoother' dosages? How short exactly is the fuse on their hormonal detonators? Could a scuffle in the mess hall lead to a massacre?
They're bracingly young, but noticeably removed from the common traces of youth. The scars between them are enough to trade away for decades of warfare.
Myself and other providers have found their temperament similar to the Spartans of Red Team at least. Polite. Professional. Human certainly, though most of my staff have remarked negatively on their atonal general expression and significant lack in sense of social familiarity.
Truthfully, after the hell they'd undertaken groundside (and surely horrors years before now), I find it callous to hold 'being withdrawn' against them. They do not shy from eye contact, and when one looks back with not the eyes of a provider, but the eyes of a man, it is clear that these Spartans too know fear and sadness and heartbreak.<< //

Happy birthday to Veta Lopis!
Today is her -496th birthday!
Tumblr media
When Lopis was seventeen, she was kidnapped and abused for several weeks before killing her captor and escaping. These events changed the course of her life, and she eventually joined Gao's Ministry of Protection as a special inspector. She excelled at the position, both because of her unique experiences and deep sense of justice, stopping multiple high-profile murderers and becoming Gao's top homicide investigator.
In May 2553, the UNSC established a presence on Gao, secretly in search of a Forerunner ancilla within Gao's caves. The ancilla began killing Gao citizens to incite discord in the already-tense relationship between the Gaos and the UNSC. Lopis was sent to investigate the homicides there, but not without UNSC intervention. Spartan Fred-104 and three Spartan IIIs were sent to shadow Lopis to prevent her anti-UNSC outlook from unfairly blaming the them for the murders.
It was in the caves that Lopis watched Ash-G099, Olivia-G291, and Mark-G313 in action. After observing the level of violence and destruction the Gammas were capable of, as well as their need to regularly take drugs to control the mental instability that their augmentations caused, Lopis began to suspect them as the murderers.
Eventually, she would realize that the murderer was not Mark, but the work of the ancilla Intrepid Eye. Meanwhile, the newly-elected President of Gao moved to remove the UNSC presence on the planet. When it became clear that Lopis was working with the UNSC, he attempted to eliminate her, and Lopis instead fled with the Spartans.
She was greeted by then-Rear Admiral Serin Osman, who informed her of ONI's intentions of separating the Gammas from Blue Team and switching them to covert operations due to their public relations risk. Osman offered Lopis the opportunity to act as a handler of sorts for the Spartan IIIs in an investigative team called the Ferrets. Having grown attached to the Ferrets, and unable to return home, Lopis accepted.
Their next assignments would lead to them into deep cover within the Keepers of the One Freedom, a devout ex-Covenant splinter group. Lopis and the Ferrets would follow the Keepers to the Ark after the Keepers unexpectedly partnered with the Banished, giving them an opportunity to target Atriox.
When they arrived on the Ark, they discovered the UNSC presence there and broke cover to offer assistance in stopping the Keepers from firing the Halos from the Ark. Lopis and the remaining Ferrets remain on the Ark, having teamed up with the crew of the Spirit of Fire.
In canon (~2560), she is turning 40!

Who is ash ?
Tumblr media
Ash is a member of the Spartan-III program's Gamma company, the final class of Spartan-IIIs. His team, Team Saber, was one of the best in the class.
Gamma company are different from the other IIIs because Kurt, the kidnapped Spartan-II who was assigned to train them, was getting fucking sick of watching Spartan-IIIs die. He secretly (without authorization) changed the augmentation procedures for the Gammas, giving them an altered fight-or-flight response. The good news: the Gammas are harder to kill and can keep moving and fighting even in the face of extreme injury, increasing the odds that they might survive the suicide missions the UNSC designed them for. The bad news: They require regular doses of medication to keep them emotionally stable.
When Blue Team (minus John for Halo 2 reasons) rocked up to Onyx in 2552 to answer the distress call Halsey put out after going there with Kelly to find the whole planet exploding, Ash was one of the young Spartans they met. Most of the Gammas had already been sent off on other missions because their training was complete, but a couple of teams (including Ash's) were still on Onyx.
Ash was 13 years old at the time. They were all so young, and it really shows.
During the conflict with both the Covenant and the Forerunner Sentinels that activated to defend Onyx (because the planet Onyx was secretly a Forerunner shield world), Ash's five-member team lost two: Holly, their CQC specialist; and Dante, their demolitions guy. Ash and the remaining two (Mark, their sharpshooter, and Olivia, their stealth expert) were there with Blue Team, Chief Mendez, Dr. Halsey, and the older S-IIIs Tom and Lucy when they (the only survivors) got sealed up in the Shield World's pocket dimension for a couple of months-ish at the end of the war until ONI came to fish them out and arrest Halsey.
Ash and the Sabers were adopted into Blue Team for a while, until they were split off to operate as what is called a Ferret Team for more stealthy missions than the UNSC would use IIs for. They work with a former police detective from the planet Gao named Veta Lopis. (I unfortunately don't have a lot of nice things to say about those books though, I didn't like them.)
As of right now in Halo (2560) Ash is 21, which makes him still among the youngest Spartans.
My reason for wishing he got a chance to meet Chief at some point in the past?
They have stuff in common. I think there's some potential for great interactions between the adult Spartan-IIs and the younger IIIs if we'd been allowed to have it, because the IIIs existing is insane to the IIs and the IIs are the closest thing the IIIs would have to adults who understand about them.
I could also just write something with Ash and Fred because Ash does know Fred and Fred has also shouldered the weight of being a team leader in horrible situations, but like. You guys know me. John's my most favorite special guy.

Notes About the Halo Ferret Trilogy
If you are reading this and haven't read Halo: Last Light and Halo: Retribution, you should because they're good.
Apparently, Troy Denning (of Star by Star fame, much is explained) said that he had to rewrite the ending of Shadows of Reach because Infinite was getting delayed. The Ferrets were supposed to get away with Blue Team and go back to the Infinity, not go off to the Ark. This was done last minute, as in the book was formatted and sent to be printed when the word came down. I would just about kill for the part that got switched, but 343 likely shredded it.
Knowing this now, I reread the book to find where the patch job likely was...I think it started when John and the girls go to grab the stuff they were on Reach to snag. It's not a really Denning Halo climax- all the Spartans are injured and their armor damaged, which in his books is usually a prelude to a final fight for somebody if not them. Instead, John does leg day and says hi to fragmentary AI and Fred has a too-brief encounter with Veta. There's no fight to get out, the mission just kind of ends. It's well written for sure but it just...the pace is off. A patch job.
I can see the set up for the original ending, too, I think. Fred keeps talking about blowing stuff up, which doesn't really get a pay-off. The Ferrets watching and waiting is set up for them needing Blue Team to do something, and delivering a message seems like a lot had to go just right for that move to work the way it did, rather than the easier task of getting the message to the horde of UNSC personnel now on the planet. Also it doesn't matter? Atriox is back and...I mean everyone would know soon enough, he's not a shadowy sort of guy, Atriox.
Also, I was certain that the mining equipment would not make it to the excavation site after all this effort was put into protecting it and it was really useful for doing war.
How, exactly, Infinite's delay necessitated the existence of Divine Wind specifically I'm not clear about. Atriox is back from the Ark, okay, there are a lot of portals to the Ark, or he could have got through regardless of what Blue Team did (making the mission a su success and failure at the same time is on-brand for Halo novels). Nothing in Divine Wind comes up in Infinite- not any of the stuff with the Prophets, not anything to do with the Banished's humans, not the Spirit of Fire. I get needing a book to fill in the schedule gap for the franchise, and Denning being slotted for that, but have him write another Ferret and Blue Team book, no one would mind...Blue Team is barely mentioned in Infinite, and their specific status except alive and busy elsewhere isn't said.
I'm pretty sure there was meant to be one more Ferrets book after Retribution that did wrap up a lot of the plot points wrapped up in Divine Wind, but perhaps with more finality in a few cases.
The three Ferret books were all about facing off with Intrepid Eye and Castor...and the first two had a lot to do with Gao. Intrepid Eye got brought down of course, and Castor while alive is in a different spot. Veta should be the one to off Castor, or at least set him up, considering what he did to her team. Arlo Casille needs justice for his part in that and worse, too.
Of course Blue Team, and Fred specifically, is a highlight of the first two books, too. Fred is my favorite Spartan so I'm biased. Not having the Ferrets working with him again seems like a mistake, and not just because of Fred/Veta, but also because it gives him something distinctive to do. Otherwise he's just a guy on John's team, which is unfortunately what Halo 5 did to my boy.
The first two books also made use of Veta doing CSI stuff, not just spy stuff. It's such a cool bit of both books and gives her a really unique skillset in the Halo roster that makes for some entertaining reading. It is not utilized in Divine Wind.
Divine Wind introduced a lot of interesting things, don't get me wrong, mostly on the Covenant side. The Ferrets...well, poor Mark died horribly. The survivors are on the SoF in a situation where spying isn't going to count for much (the Banished are killing their human members pretty freely), so maybe Ash and Olivia will be back to combat ops leaving Veta to...?
On my list of projects now, I guess, is to write my shot at the original climax of Shadows of Reach, then maybe try writing the third Ferrets book set on Infinity- an underutilized setting, may she rest in peace (if she is dead? I like that ship...she was beaten and evacuated, so she's gone...right? Why is the fate of so many people and places in Infinite not clarified?! Where is Blue Team?!?!)

beach house design updates + sillies. mostly reworked the driftwood bathroom and the laundry room last night
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i saw a really cool patio bath design and wanted to try it. still fiddling with a few things, but i like how it's turning out
here's the outside view from the back. rearranged the bathroom in a way i like better now that most of the plumbing is outside. also put the beach wave mural on a wall where it actually fits nicely
Tumblr media
moved some walls in here and chopped up the laundry area into a hallway that leads straight back to the rec room with the laundry off to the side. the laundry room itself is still in progress, but i found some stuff i like for it. it's got a cutout shelf into the rec room for towels and stuff. i imagine they have a system like. clean towels on top, dirty towels on the bottom. efficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then we have shenanigans as usual. ferret team family portrait.
Tumblr media
olivia giving her dad fred a hug. the height mod honestly works great here, i made the gammas just a little bit shorter than blue team and the hugs look so cute. i think ash and veta are discussing the many benefits of Lump of Clay(tm)
Tumblr media
john loves to do soccer ball tricks inside the house. look how graceful he is
Tumblr media
cortana's judging you, mark
also. since i haven't manually done any tweaking to their attractiveness preferences, the game has decided that ash is head over fucking heels for linda, which is honestly funny enough that i might just leave it that way
Tumblr media
i guess everyone is he/they and she/they according to the dialogue boxes. i have pronouns set in CAS. the game ignores them.
"where is linda pravdin?"
oh there she is. cryptid sighting

Ok so Divine Wind
I have some mixed feels, about 90% good.
If you don't want spoilers stop reading. You have been warned
I thoroughly enjoyed Bulgogi (Jagodi), loved his way of just making fun of all the "great journey" believers. He was fun to watch. Love his armorless design we need more half naked elites.
I loved watching Castor just completely lose his faith, watching it just collapse and him being smart enough to realize it. I just compare him to poor Tartar Sauce (Tartarus) who has his Oracle tell him he's wrong, and tartar sauce responds with just /monkey brain go brrr Im too far gone to process any of this/.
I love that he kept Bulgogi around because he knew how wise he was, and the fact that he became his closest friend. Honestly I feel for Castor, he really isn't a black and white evil guy. He has good qualities and moments.
When Bulgogi had thoughts about helping Veta was funny because I was already thinking he should, but no this ending is better. Would be sad to lose Castor.
Also omg!! Spirit of Fire!! Jerome! Alice?! Cutter! I LOVE HALO WARS LORE! I just imagine the delicious blur cutscenes from wars 2 and just 🤤
Also, bye bye intrepid eye you insane little ai monster. Sure was fun watching her.
Now for the bad, for the really bad. For the wtf halo. Why did they do poor Mark like that? That felt so off from the tone of the rest of the book? I understand this is halo, but this was dark even for halo standards
-Having him get to that injury point
- the prelate snapping his neck when he was so close to rescueee
- then the worst part, the absolute moment where I was just, what the fuck, proceeded to throw his corpse down where Ash and Veta were...
Fuck man then they hold a funeral, these two kids have already seen so much fucked up shit.
Their ferret team will just, never be the same.

MESSAGE
Veta was still getting used to this new lifestyle. Missions back to back, little to no rest and endless paperwork. Sometimes, she longed for home back on Gao, her tiny appartment, her lovely neighbours, her remaining family...She wondered what happened to them, do they miss her ? Is her little cousin Arnie still hoping to become an investigator like her ? Does aunt Pattie still bake her famous pumpkin pie ? So many questions, no answers.  She shook her head refusing to dwell on the past, she had a report to write down, and Baby Dragon  wasn’t a very patient woman.
She was seated in a room on a prowler (whose name she forgot as soon as her feet landed on the deck) that ONI kindly lent to her. It was small and dusty, its grey walls were tinted with some kind of whitish product that smelled like paint. There were only a desk and a chair in it, which was more than enough for Veta to write her report.
Her ferrets were down the corridor organizing their gear and getting ready for their next assignement. A little smile crept on her lips at the thought of them. She grew pretty close to Ash and Olivia, bonding over some of their “non-classified” stories (which she found pretty terrifying considering their age). Mark was an another story. He was still very wary of her, and did’nt seem to accept her as a part of the team. Less than a few months ago, she suspected him to be a serial killer, so she understoood his reluctance towards her, but she hoped things would change for the sake of the team’s dynamic.
She was chewing on the bottom of her pen, deep in thoughts, when her mind wandered on Blue Team. Several of her past missions involved both her Ferrets and Blue Team, it was always an honor to work alongside them.
She continued to tap her report on her borrowed laptop when Fred’s face suddenly popped in her mind. She blushed, they grew pretty close during their short time together.
She dared to say she missed him.
This wasn’t an inappropriate thought...was it ? He was one of the only constant thing in her life at the moment, except for her Ferrets. They came from different worlds, and very opposite upbringings : she grew up on an insurrectionist planet who longed for its freedom, while Fred is the ultimate representation of the UNSC authority. Never in her life would she have dreamed of becoming friend with a UNSC thug. But there she was, missing him and his dry witted humor, and wondering if he was safe.
She grabbed her commpad, oppened a private channel and wrote the following message :
Dear Lieutenant,
I sincerely hope that you are having “fun” on your current classified adventure. On my part, the Ferrets are doing good. I was thinking about you lately, I dare to say I miss you.
I've got a lot to tell you, don’t go MIA until then.
Take care,
Inspector Lopis

Happy birthday to Spartan Ash-G099!
Today is his -515th birthday!
Tumblr media
Ash was orphaned during the Human-Covenant war after the Covenant glassed his home planet of Alluvion. He was recruited by ONI into the SPARTAN-III program, and began his training under Kurt Ambrose on the shield world Onyx. Ash was assigned to Gamma Company and the leader of Team Saber, which became one of the Spartan-III's best fireteams. After the devastating losses in Alpha Company, Ambrose decided to do things differently with the Gammas. Determined not to suffer the same losses, he secretly had the Gammas treated with a cocktail of illegal performance-enhancing drugs. While this made the Gammas faster and stronger, it also made them more mentally unstable. The Gammas, including Ash, required the use of "smoothers", drugs which would counteract the mental imbalance.
After the first activation of the Halo array, Sentinels on Onyx entered a standby state. When the Sentinels reactivated, they approached Ash. When Ash was unable to satisfactorily prove that he was a "Reclaimer", the Sentinels became hostile.
At the same time, Fleet Master Voro Nar 'Mantakree began his assault on Onyx. Team Saber was joined by Spartan-II Blue Team who helped stage a defense against the assault. Two of Saber's members, Dante and Holly, died during the assault. After 'Mantakree's fleet was destroyed, Ash and the surviving members of Team Saber remained attached to Blue Team.
Blue Team was deployed to Gao to investigate the presence of a Foreunner ancilla. The ancilla was attempting to brew tension between the already-distrustful Gaos and the UNSC by killing Gao citizens, who suspected the UNSC of the murders. Gao Special Inspector Veta Lopis was sent to investigate the murders, accompanied by Blue Team. Like the other Gaos, she suspected the UNSC of the murders, and in particular, Gamma member Mark-G313.
When the truth about the ancilla Intrepid Eye was revealed and the Gao government turned on Lopis, she dropped her suspicions and joined forces with the UNSC. However, ONI was concerned with the risk the Gammas presented when they did not have a steady supply of smoothers. To keep them out of the public eye, the Gammas were trained to be part of an ONI operative team called the Ferrets with Veta Lopis as their leader.
The Ferrets went into deep cover within the Keepers of the One Freedom--a Covenant splinter group--posing as Lopis' children. Through this, they were able to follow the Keepers to the Ark. There, they learned that the Keepers intended on using the Ark to fire the Halo array with the help of San’Shyuum Prelate Dhas Bhasvod. The Ferrets broke cover to stop them, with Lopis allowing herself to he captured with the intention of guiding the UNSC to initiate an orbital bombardment to prevent the Halo arrays from firing. Mark, who began to unravel due to a prolonged period without his smoothers, suffered significant injuries by the time the Ferrets were rescued by Red Team. As they retreated, Mark was killed by Bhasvod. The Ferrets joined the crew of the UNSC Spirit of Fire, who held a funeral in his honor. Ash was deeply shaken by the loss of his teammate, believing himself responsible for Mark's death.
In canon (~2560), he is turning 21!

I see a lot of other Fred/Veta moments but no one brings up this one from Retribution while Veta and Olivia are looking into violent Keeper/Intrepid Eye shenanigans on Meridian Station:
"Blue Team, be ready." "Always are," came Fred's reply. "You be careful." "Too late for that, "Veta said. "You haven't been a good influence." "I'll try to do better."
You have to imagine everyone listening in- which would be probably the rest of Blue Team and all the Ferrets, possibly the Silent Joe's leadership, and definitely Administrator Sloan- rolling their eyes and wishing they'd just get a room. In this crowd, the tag-team interrogation they did on Casille surely counts as foreplay.
Give me the Fred/Veta reunion, 343. Let them be happy. Send Blue Team to the Spirit on the Ark and have them do cool stuff while you do your "soft reset" in the Milky Way.
