People saying they’re Salem witch descendants or talking about the witches who died in Salem as actual witches low key pisses me off because like. There Were No Witches In Salem. That’s the fuckin point. No one was practicing witchcraft, let alone anything that resembles modern day witchcraft. It was just a moral panic caused by puritans being freaks (obviously far more complex than that but this is not an educational post, just a rant). You will find historical records of people confessing to witchcraft and surviving because they would sometimes only hang the ones who refused to confess on the grounds that they weren’t repenting and continuing to cling to satan (some of that sentence is probably a muddy truth, source is a historical tour in Salem I went on so whatever). So for some they confessed because it literally saved their life. Others did because of. Yknow. The Torture.

None of this is to say that we can’t find the idea of Salem witches cool or explore them in fiction or whatever. But acting like there were actually witches in Salem is just factually inaccurate
