Van Life vs Bomb Cyclone
Β  Can I just start by saying: I am a flip flop and tank tops, all year-round kind of Floridian. Also, we don’t ever really experience winter the same way as other states. It almost never drops toΒ freezing temperatures here. It just doesn't. Our winter weather consists of jackets in the morning and spaghettiΒ straps byΒ midday. Not to mention, that doesn't even start until sometime around February. Yes, we have our chillyΒ days prior to that but nothing requiring an actual winter coat. So, although I had been briefed on this so-called bomb cyclone, I treated it in the "assess the problem IF it arises" kind of way; Just like we do with hurricane warnings. Yes, I live in a van. Yes, winter is upon usΒ and yes, I probably should have already prepared for colder days but I did not.Β Last night was a clear confirmation of that.Β
Β  After spending the day listening to music, hiding from lower temperatures and scanning the internet forΒ remote jobs, I was ready for bed. I packed my things up, said my goodbyes and begin unzipping my boots as I headed to the van. I looked around, to make sure nobody was watching, slid the back door open, wiggle my way onto the bed, pull off my boots, shut the door and drew the curtains. It's cold outside, and it's even colder inside the van. I needed to get warm before the cold chills kicked in causing that annoying sensation of having to pee. I bury myself in the covers and change into my sleepingΒ clothes under there like any smart lady-childΒ would do.Β  β€œDone with that,” I think to myself. I poke my head out from my fortress of warmth, reach up and turn on the lights. What I saw then was the oversight of one of my many endeavors. I had forgotten to crack the windows during the day so that the temperature outside could match the inside and avoid condensation on the ceiling. Usually, this causes the ceiling to sweat and anything close to it must be washed to avoid mold. However, this was different. The ceiling must have sweat during the day and due to the humidity left after the rainstorm, it also had plenty of time to frost over. I was literally looking at these tiny icicles spread across the ceiling.Β
Tumblr media
You know that feeling you get when you wake up to a warm slobbery kiss from your fur baby? Well, these tiny icicles warrant the opposite feeling. As the inside gets warmer, the ceiling will begin to sweat, propelling cold droplets of frostbite onto your face.Β I grab a towel and frantically begin wiping the ice off.Β  In that moment, I felt the urge to write about it, warn other people, to make myself vulnerable, if only to spare one person's defeat... but I took a picture instead and told myself, it was late and I should document it later.Β
Tumblr media
Some might ask why I didn’t just rent a hotel or go to a friend or family members house. I want to live a simple life, one that does not burden those around me.Β  This was an error, my mishap. These are the odd ways I have chosen to strengthen myself, to be less dependent upon others and more understanding with myself; Humble in my triumphs and humble in my defeats. I understand, most people have a house and don't really care about the struggles that come withΒ van life. I have been called everything from homeless to a hobo, lazy and dumb. I’ve learned to accept that people will think I’m strange no matter what I do and I’m learning to be okay with those views.
Β  We can choose to give up and be fearful of trying situations, or we can remember that there are people in this world, who deal with conditions far worse than my popsicle ceiling. They have nothingΒ and yet they push themselves to get up and keep moving. These people may as well be invisible to any closeminded person who refuses to make eye contact with somebody whose lifestyle doesn’t meet their standards. Since living in the van, I've been lucky enough to cross paths with them. They give me strength, they give me hope and they remind me that life goes on. These are my trials, and I will learn from my errors.Β  Tomorrow is a chance to try again and I plan to do just that.
Β -Stay toasty <3

We've found that the best way to store our daily hygiene items is in a water bottle! With this, everything stays together, and we can easily take it into a gym or use it with our outdoor shower, depending on where we are washing up.
