In general, neo-capitalism meets bourgeois requirements better than Fascism. Although Fascism does not seriously threaten capitalist economic interests — as was clear at the time to the German bourgeoisie — and seeks to channel anti-capitalist sentiments against “Jewish” and “non-creative” capital, nonetheless the extraordinary political conditions it created and the replacement of normal bourgeois everyday life by a situation constantly fraught with tension, is at least not “comfortable” for the bourgeoisie which does not welcome the permanence of revolutionary methods — even if they serve counterrevolutionary purposes.

So last night I was browsing through the streaming service Shudder and I saw that they had the 1960 Italian horror Black Sunday which I've been wanting to see for a long time, mainly because of how much I've always loved it's poster lol ( ). Well I loved it and just had to draw Barbara Steele as Asa. If you've never heard of the film and are wondering why she has holes on her face, it's because in the opening scene she's sentenced to death for evil sorcery and has a mask with metal spikes on the inside hammered onto her face. Yeah...I was shocked something so brutal happened in a 60s horror film lol (then again this is the same year France gave us Eyes Without a Face which featured a disturbing face transplant scene so....shrug). 

Also I looked up what other horror films came out in 1960 and I saw this, Eyes Without a Face, Psycho and Peeping Tom. Damn, something must've been in the water that year to make so many great horror films come out in the same year.

Of course, Fascism always comes into being with some social crisis, and always exploits mass dissatisfaction. But it is not possible to develop a general “formula” whereby it would be possible to “calculate” the Fascist threat from the available data. The growth of Fascism as a mass movement and its seizure of power can be explained in every concrete case only from the totality of the social situation in the given country: from an analysis of the whole economic, social, and political situation.

And here's day 17! We're here with the Mainstream novel Chasing Banksy by Kaelyn Daughetee. This cover was designed by the amazing returning designer, Lauren Vajda!

A coming-of-age novel set in a community college where two creative, grief-struck characters try and re-discover who they are despite their challenges and flaws. Through new friendships, experiences, and possible romances, these two characters are forced to work on an art history project where they try to uncover the Banksy-copycat street artist lurking about their city, but find themselves along their journey.

About the Author

Kaelyn Daughetee rediscovered her passion for storytelling during her art historical studies. While she still loves art history, today, she enjoys writing fiction and fantasy, free verse poetry, and haiku. She is a lover of stories especially if they contain juicy enemies-to-lovers plots, gut-wrenching bromances, or found family stories. When she is not writing, she enjoys traveling and accumulating new experiences, or she can be spotted assimilating to a teenage mutant ninja turtle lifestyle: practicing martial arts and eating pizza.

About the Designer

Lauren Vajda is the founder of the studio Verso Design, a Bay Area-based design studio working closely with thoughtful organizations in education, nonprofit, and commerce—leading design endeavors with the potential to make positive impact. In her downtime, she is likely hiking with her family, attempting to become the next Star Baker, or escaping into a good book (or three).
