Theresia Hartenberger with poodle by Sanspareille Natasha Gerson

"A beautiful photo of "Resie" as her family and friens called her with one of the poodles. Probably earlier then the scope of the album. What we know of Theresia, married name Hartenberger (née unknown) is that she was born in 1886 (it's on the burial record, though not where) and she died in Chicago in 1958. She is buried alongside son Edy and daughter in law Elly.

Edy when young worked for a while as part of the Ryle Rollers, with what would have been cousins -according to info found in the Wintergarten files. But on which side of the family? Originally I thought Theresia's (who we first thought was named Flora) maiden name might have been Ryle, but after a fruitless mixup with another artist named Flora Ryle, that proved a dead end.

'Theresia' rather than 'Theresa' indicates she was Austrian born too. Czech circus artists I showed the album to (thank you Dagmar, Erik and David Jung ) maintained that specifically Theresia 'looked Czech' somehow. Which of course, with Austria's history is a definite possiblity. They suggested she might have been a member of the Kludsky family, seeing resemblances, but they were Jewish and Resie can't have been -or they wouldn't have been able to continue after the Anschluss and Edy wouldn't have been drafted into the army nor been able to marry Elly in 1937.But surely there was some warm connection between especially Resie and both the Bradna family and Joe Jackson's -all Czechborn.
