A lack of funding and stifling of newer treatments kept the hospital from evolving with modern medicine. When the area began suffering from its mid-century financial crisis, all education and recreation programs at the facility were terminated. By the 1960’s political attitudes toward the institution model had changed. Hundreds of people with treatable learning disabilities were lazily categorized as “retards” and sent here. Thus valuable limited resources of the asylum were being directed toward capacity rather than rehabilitation. A plaque by the entryway to the administration building reads “Yet while I live, let me not live in vain.” Some of the worst cases featured those patients who were not mentally retarded at all.
