So, this morning I finished watching Yu Yu Hakusho for... what, fourth time? Fifth? Not sure of the exact number, but before this, I've always watched it with the English dub, yet now I went with the Japanese one. Otherwise I didn't notice much difference, except... the characters were a lot meaner in the English dub. There's the way Yusuke talks to Koenma, but also the way he and Kuwabara talk to Hiei. Yusuke makes a lot of references to Hiei's height in the English dub, calling him a little softie and making a comment about Hiei having to stand on a phone book while he fights, but in the Japanese one, those are absent. Guess height isn't such a big deal in Japanese culture as it is in the West... and now, Kuwabara. Watching the English dub always gave me the impression that Hiei was picking a fight with him on purpose and that Kuwabara gave clumsy comebacks, but watching the original one, it turns out that it's Kuwabara who's usually starting it, unprovoked, and that Hiei actually worries for his safety. That's a big hit on how I thought their dynamics worked.
