This Week At The Overseer HQ

Welcome to a new segment here at The Overseer where we keep you updated on the mishaps here at The Overseer HQ! Ever wonder what your favourite writers and artists are doing between issues? Well, now you’ll be able to tell!

The HQ was incredibly hyped this week as we approached our 10th issue, a big milestone! We ended up naming this week our official birthday, so be sure to wish all writers, artists, editors, etc, a very special day if you see them! If they act confused, assume they have been replaced with a clone and act accordingly.*

Incidents this week were shockingly low with only 28 reported. These incidents include a food fight in the breakroom, multiple fires thanks to a failed baking attempt, and multiple failed kidnappings. The Overseer would like to remind people that no, our writers are not up for adoption and you cannot take them home. That goes for artists and beta readers as well.

The Seers are ecstatic this week as they are back in business with three asks to answer! Be sure to give them lots of love and consider leaving an ask of your own via the ask box, they’ll be answered as soon as we receive enough to warrant an article.

We’re also busy at work on the Citizen Census which is set to be released the first week of July, huge thanks to Lydia for leading the charge in gathering the information needed! If you have some citizens who haven’t completed the census form yet, then you can do it here! The Census Forum is set to close on the 28th. We can’t wait to finish the article and see the employment rate on the server!

The Overseer would also like to note that we are always seeking new writers, artists, and proofreaders. To apply, simply pop into The Overseer channel on the server and let us know you’re interested in taking part in the newspaper!

The Overseer Newspaper Celebrates 10th Issue!

The Overseer Newspaper releases its tenth issue today, June 21st, 2023! This fan-created project has brought over 500 Citizens the latest updates regarding everything from the inner community’s events, changes, and overarching evolving presence on the Server overall to frequent updates about their favored Hermits’ recurring content. The dedicated staff appears overjoyed to be able to celebrate the newspaper’s tenth “Birthday” and has stated that this is an incredible milestone. Previous conversations within the organization have included wishing to commemorate all of the work that the team has contributed to this ongoing collaborative project. Through each issue, The Overseer solidifies its identity as “Made by the Hermit Citizen Community, for the Hermit Citizen Community,” through its recurring columns featuring Horoscopes, a Lost and Found, an Advice Column, Server Affiliate Summaries, retrospectives from On the Sidelines, Citizen Organization Advertisements, Weather Forecasts, its Games and Puzzles, and its aesthetically detailed Coloring Pages and Comics. This newspaper releases both a textual version and a PDF version of each issue through its Tumblr page and garners an increasingly growing readership of the Hermit Citizen Hub.

Roo, the Editor-in-Chief of The Overseer, has guided the Newspaper collective through each issue’s weekly progress, providing suggestions for new articles, keeping track of the present staff members and their engagement, structuring the order of the articles for their public releases, providing the Affiliate Summaries, frequently updating the staff about the ongoing news regarding both the Hermit Citizens and the Hermits themselves, answering endless questions from both outsiders and staff members, organizing special events for The Overseer’s future issues, and bolstering consistently high morale among the staff through encouraging and welcoming leadership. The task of keeping each staff member accountable while also ensuring that they are not overworking themselves to the bone is far from an easy one, with over twenty staff members and an enormous passive viewership of approximately six hundred participants of the Hermit Citizen Hub. The comprehensive duties of this volunteer position can easily rival those of a full-time paid occupation, and it is incredibly generous of Roo to provide these extensive services without monetary compensation. The Overseer staff and the Hermit Citizen Community would like to extend a long-overdue “Thank You” to Roo, the ever-determined visionary, and cat-herder of The Overseer!

While each newspaper issue varies in length, the written voices of each contributor have become increasingly distinct over the past ten weeks. Frequent readers of The Overseer may very well be able to guess the writer of each article by merely a single paragraph, and the subject matter of each article. Corundum Cat and Jamie create ominous, humorously written Horoscopes each week. Sirius, Ilea, and Azure make Word Searches, Crossword Puzzles, Coloring Pages, and Comics that invite readers to test their wits and their knowledge of color theory. Roo brings the most prevalent Hermit Affiliate groups to the center of attention through the bi-weekly Affiliate Summaries, all with the reporter’s commentary. Jester, Nes, Vi, and S all provide lighthearted assistance for all Citizen problems through The Seers Advice Column.

Rainy brings readers full Weather Forecasts to help Citizens prepare for thunderstorms, rip tides, and the odd sandstorm, as well as predictions for Hot Guy sightings. Lydia shines the spotlight on Citizens’ artistic pursuits. Two previous issues also included Lydia’s Spectating Science column, which ran capacious reports covering scientific researchers of the Server. Virtual ensures that all missing items are tracked down with perfectly descriptive articles in the Lost and Found. Felix provides Op-Eds full of wonder and boundless enthusiasm for life itself in the On the Sidelines column. Jamie organizes advertisements from all around the Server in the Citizen Advertisements column. Cheer shows off her affinity for graphic design through the PDF versions of each issue, including adapting the titles and formatting each article.

With over fifty articles published in total for The Overseer, every writer’s level of finesse and skill comes to light through their efforts to make an entertaining, informative, and personalized newspaper. In addition, the majority of the staff also shares the task of writing recurring topics with each other, allowing for a varied writing group each week. It is not an accident that readers may see various recurring articles written by different members from one issue to the next. While not seen as nearly as challenging as performance art, the act of providing one’s written word in a public setting can be nerve-wracking to any number of viewers. The Overseer wishes the best of luck to all of the writers, all of whom are trying very hard to develop their creative literary experience to the best of their ability in the public eye!

The assiduous team of designers, editors, reporters, writers, and organizers of The Overseer, including Arcade, Azure, Berry, Cheer, Corundum Cat, Felix, Fool, Ilea, Jamie, Jester, Lee, Light, Lydia, Mewie, Morph, Nes, Nika, Rainy, Roo, S, Sirius, Snuffy, Styx, and Virtual, would like to share their thanks to each of their readers for the steadfast support they have received for the past two and a half months! Bdoubleo: There has been a sighting of the Bdoubleo in his natural habitat. All is well with the world.

GoodTimesWithScar: Apparently, literally all the Hermits are the tallest possible, even not counting various extra limbs. The good times keep timing.

Grian: They’re planning a trip to Omega Mart. Please don’t look up commercials, as from what I’ve gathered, they are extremely concerning and honestly, probably the worst thing I will see in my life, if you don’t count the newspaper’s lack of storage. Nobody worry, we’re still debating on whether or not to call Pearl, as we’re all broke enough already.

JoeHills: (Non-threateningly) Joe Hills.

MumboJumbo: As a direct quote, “Mumbo Jumbo should compete in a stache' contest,” which, while having a multitude of grammatical and spelling errors, we at the newspaper fully agree with.

PearlescentMoon: They’re studying her under a microscope. They’re taking notes. They’re running full-level tests and then wiping up the extra soup spills so as to not ruin their hard work.

ZombieCleo: Cleo has been turned into a lofi girl (gender neutral) and honestly, I think we should be scared.

If your affiliate channel has not shown up this week, it is, as always, and I should really not have to keep saying this, but it’s become a tradition at this point- it is because it has been inactive or the activity has been minimal. Have a lovely week, citizens!

Throwback #1

With the rise of museums on Hermitcraft (and us at The Overseer covering briefly what is in them), the local Hermit-history nerd of The Overseer (that’s me) decided that covering some of the artifacts collected in detail would be interesting. It will probably be a series showing up now and then.

So, welcome to the first edition of this trivia thing, I may manufacture the name in the future. This week we are looking at the season 9 big Iskall head in the implications of Iskallman being back.

Firstly, who is Iskallman? Technically, Iskall with an extra Iskall head on his head. However, what is more important is that said head implies that Iskall will give someone a gift that is of help. The character originated from Hermit Challenges after Iskall got dared and has been carried over to season 9.

Now the big head was made to give Stress a gift and later to use in his King’s court audition tape.

Questions that we cannot answer are ‘How is Iskallman?’ and ‘Will Iskallman be back?’ We only may hope to learn that in the future, but that has been your quick history throwback for a week.

Weekly Weather Report

Temperature will be presented in Celsius format, sorry, Americans

Thursday - Cloudy skies with a high of 21 Celsius is expected to last throughout Thursday, with winds picking up in the evening. An excellent day to do outside work as the clouds will prevent a lot of the suns UV’s from reaching you, plus the slight wind ensures you won’t overheat.

Friday - Light showers are expected to begin Friday afternoon alongside a high of 32 Celsius. Showers will last until around dinner time before clearing out to reveal clear skies. Might be best to choose an indoor activity.

Saturday - Clear skies with a high of 34 Celsius is expected for Saturday and will last the entire day, be sure to hydrate properly and consider avoiding labour intensive work while outside during the day.

Sunday - More clear skies with a high of 38 Celsius, seems like a bit of a heatwave has hit Hermitcraft. Be sure to drink lots of water, avoid unnecessary labour, and try taking showers if you feel real groggy.

Monday - The heatwave continues with clear skies and a high of 34 Celsius, as always be sure to hydrate and take care of your bodies needs.

Tuesday - Clear skies continue but the heat seems to have gone down as the high is expected to be 26 Celisuis, might be a good day to get anything you put off during the heatwave done.

Wednesday - Light showers are expected in the morning before making way to clear skies by noon with a high of 25 Celusuis, perhaps consider visiting a nearby body of water for a swim.

Yet Another Birthday Article

The Overseer was an idea suggested by Hermitcitizen and mod Void on April 15th, 2023, the idea coming from a dream, if our sources are correct. Not even a week after the Hermitcitizen Hub was up and running, the first issue was posted on April 18th. The three days between the newspaper's founding and first issue were full of pure chaos, name suggestions, and a growing group of various citizens contributing in their own ways.

The name "The Overseer" was suggested by Shroomgun, and for the last ten weeks, the crew at The Overseer has been working to produce a newspaper each week, complete with games, weather, articles, coloring pages, a PDF version, and even a recent expansion to Twitter.

The newspaper consists of less than 30 citizens, and honestly, if I were to pick a newspaper crew, i sure as hell wouldnt pick them I would pick them every time. These citizens are all people who put in extra time for no paycheck (we're all unpaid interns, any donations would be welcome) and make amazing creations. Thank you so much for everyone in the newspaper crew, because if it was just me and one or two other people, it'd be a really crappy newspaper. I may be herding cats, but if I'm fully honest, I'm more of a cat person anyways.

Here's to many more weeks to come.

While mildly disquieting, hearing voices isn’t too uncommon on the hermitcraft server, particularly when near a build with as much residual whimsical energy as the Tree of Whimsy (Whimsy Anomaly Center of Knowledge [W.A.C.K.] site OO100) or The Entity (W.A.C.K. site CON412). Though if you are still concerned, here’s a quick checklist to determine the severity of your situation:

Do the voices remain even when you have left the W.A.C.K. site’s radius?

Do the voices imitate either your voice, or the voice of a friend/loved one?

Are the voices accompanied by music? Particularly acoustic covers of your favorite and/or least favorite songs.

Do the voices become panicked or even scream when near large redstone contraptions?

If the answer to any of those questions is yes, please stop by the W.A.C.K. research center (located below the end island) for testing treatment - The Seers

Whoever it was that had taken over this house might not be paranoid as Lorelai suggested, but he was certainly guarded. To a curious degree. Lilith had rarely seen such determination to keep everything out, even in the depths of Hell. Whether he had cast these barriers himself or had found someone to do the bidding for him was a question Lilith desired answered for several reasons, but what also begged her interest was his reasons; keeping something out or keeping something in?

Opting to simply open the door the normal way rather than magic herself inside, Lilith examined the door even as she picked the lock with a subtle twirl of her fingers, before turning her attention to the rest of the house. The relatively traditional picturesque home, its entire aesthetic, didn’t hold her attention in the same way it evidently held Lorelai’s; Lilith didn’t have any personal stake in this residence, only a…justified curiosity in its current owner.

Standing at the base of the stairs, she silently watched as the girl wandered off, enthusiasm lacing every word as she took a nostalgic trip down a lane of distant yet familiar memories, betraying her excitement at being here. Leaving Lorelai to examine the kitchen, and doubtless the fridge, Lilith turned to walk up the stairs, her scarlet nailed hands trailing long the bannister as she took each step at a leisurely pace, examining the walls as she did so.

Her hands continued to trail along the wall as she reached the upper landing, her palm tracing the wallpapers and framed painting and photos. She paused at a picture frame, and seeing that it was the identity of the current resident, she snapped her fingers and the frame was suddenly empty, the photo now in her hand.

Continuing on, she peered through this door and that until she found the one she was looking for.

“Perfect….” She murmured to herself as she pushed open the door to the main bedroom. It was the one place that everyone kept their secrets, the parts of their personality that they…reserved for their own privacy. Smiling with eager determination, she entered the room confidently, her hands yet again trailing over everything, getting a sense to everything she touched. Whoever it was that had cast those barriers spent a great amount of time in this room; the identity simply…hidden between the trinkets.

She bit her lip, moving towards the closets just as felt the presence of Lorelai nearby. Turning to look at the girl, she held out the photo. “The new residents, including your…little over-cautious caster.”

She climbed the stairs albeit loudly as she paused for a moment. The creaks that came from the house were her own. She listened a bit more. The house was much quieter than it was. No other spirits or entities were nearby. This was much different than she remembered. She was haunted, tortured by the numerous spirits and, she was now sure demons, coming and going. Sleep only came when her body could no longer shed anymore tears before shutting down.

She continued on as she looked around. The home looked very much the same and that irritated her. Triggering upsetting memories from her time here. Her mother's room was up ahead to the right. Her brother's right next to her mother's. She finally kept walking, her Grandmother's was on the left as she turned her head and realized it was already open. Lorelai stepped in and looked around. The interior here was different, updated to a degree, though once again some things lingered and it made her wonder if the person who bought this house bought the furniture with it.

She sighed making her way towards Lilith as she presented a picture. She gazed down upon it. The guy looked regal-like. A bit stuck or confident. He was pretty attractive overall. ❝Yep,❞ she replied with a pop of her lips. She nodded in agreement with Lilith's discernment. ❝I can sense his energy here...❞ she passed sniffing a bit ❝And his cologne?❞ she said perking a brow with a smirk. It smelt good. She looked around once more. ❝This was once my Grandmother's room,❞ she voiced nearing by the same bed. ❝That room over there, her bathroom...here was a nursery," she said making her way toward another door and opening it. ❝Oh...and now it's a walk-in closet,❞ she said with a small chuckle. She walked in to explore. It was a nice walk-in closet, with typical drawers, organizers, and lots of suits. ❝Eh....all business,❞ she replied looking over the various suits he had hanging.

Lorelai sighed with a huff. ❝I'm starting to gander that if this guy does work the magic it's not really at his home," she said with a shrug walking back out. She paused, calming, looking around a bit more, admiring the detailed carved ceiling panels. Those were new. ❝My room was in the attic,❞ she whispered remembering. Lorelai tilted her head before crossing over and floating upwards towards the attic.

Lorelai floated up to the attic as she paused. It was dark and most of the windows that lit her room were closed with shutters. It was also dusty and full of random stuff. ❝Geeze, obviously Mr. Hotshot lawyer does not come up here often!❞ Lorelai complained as dust floated about with the small rays of sun that managed to sneak in. She looked around more familiar stuff! ❝Heh,❞ she said a bit happily, feeling she may be able to find something of her family here.

She looked around before noticing a familiar trunk with brass buttons and a very old key lock. It was her grandmother's trunk. She scoffed out a sigh before falling to her knees. ❝It's still here❞" she whispered to herself. Lorelai's hands glossed over it lightly as she tried to ghost through it but couldn't. ❝Huh,❞ she let out a bit surprised in a mock-like challenge. She tried again as she tried to reach in and grab something or at least unlock it but it burned this time. ❝Ah!❞ she let out pulling her hand back before shaking her hand. ❝Lilith! I think I found something!❞ she bellowed suddenly hoping she can help her out and unlock it quickly.

Into the Abyss

Boy, it has been a clean minute since I've updated my Azur Lane progress, mostly because the content has been a trickle this year, but with the current Rerun Event, I felt obliged to do so. Seriously this year has been mad slim on stuff to do in my favorite WWII sim. As a KMS main, coming off a year which was straight up lousy with Kraut progress, I am a little… disappointed with the current offerings. I feel like it’s been that way for a while, actually. Like, I found the stagnation of the game to be pretty prominent last year but, again, I am heavily Iron Blooded so that’s probably just my bias. That’s not to say I haven’t gotten anything for my main Fleet over the last few months, just that I kind of wanted more. Still, there were other facets which have progress so I can’t be all that mad. But I kind of am.

Please, Sir, May I Have Some More

Look, man, this Iron Blood drought is killing me. Like, we've had a few crumbs but that's it. Crumbs. Obviously, I've gobbled up what i could, which ain't much. The two P6 boats, one of which was a Decisive and the Confluence of Nothingness event. That's it. Man, i am STARVING over here! So much so that, when Friedrich Carl showed up on that Banner, i dove wholeheartedly into that sh*t. And, boy, did it cost. I went at that banner with round four hindered Wisdom Cubes. It literally took close to three three hundred of the f*ckers to finally pop the first, new, Kraut Girl in almost a year. Seriously, i popped SO many f*cking dupes of almost every other ship on the Banner before i finally scored Carl. That sh*t hurt my pockets, bad. Like, egregiously. She finally decided to appear, when i was at my wit's end, but I'm content about it. I ain't happy, but my main Fleet is still one hundred percent complete, so small victories. But, for real, Manjuu needs to drop some more KMS ships soon. I'm dying over here!

The Coldest Winter

The whole reason I am writing this thing, is to address the massive Ruskie mammoth in the room – the Abyssal Refrain Rerun. Once upon a time, long, long ago, i passed on this Event because i kind of didn’t give a sh*t about chasing another Fleet at the time. I was headlong in my Iron Blood quest so I missed out on a lot of ash*t back then. Shimakaze, New Jersey, and, prudent to this particular post, Kronshtadt. Tunnel vision, for sure. After I netted U-110 and caught up with the Iron Blood offerings, I set out on honing my Northern Parliament Fleet next. After the Germans, the Russians are my favorite Fleet based on aesthetic. By then, however, Abyssal Refrain was in the rear view and I missed out on, like, three of those ships, Kronshtadt being the most important. Not only was she a glaring hole in the puzzle that was my burgeoning SN Fleet, she was the last UR boat I needed, after claiming both Shimakaze and New Jersey on Rerun Lite events. Seeing her banner reappear, I absolutely made a run. The thing is, I was low on resources. Chasing after Friedrich Carl taxed my pockets hard. Fortunately, since this is a Rerun which I had kind of participated in before, I had Ship Building tickets. Ran through those real fast but it wasn’t enough. I only had around one hundred, fifty Wisdom Cubes and was sitting on the edge of my seat rolling for that UR sweetness. It only took three. Sixty Cubes and she popped. I FINALLY had EVERY natural UR ship (not Decisive) available! Yes, I've included Sovetsky Soyuz in that assertion I absolutely made out like a bandit during Snowrealm Peregrination. It was, like, four rolls, total, and i popped all those ships. One of the easiest Banners I've ever attempted. That luck would not hold. Anyway, the Ultra Rare side quest is down, but I’m still missing Volga at the moment. Popped two Kievs chasing Kron and i hate it. Why the f*ck am i loading up on Shop Ships and not the one Banner i still ain't got? The f*ck?

So SO happy I could introduce you to all this, and you have no idea how giddy this question makes me! Let’s see now, where to begin?

I suppose a good place to start would be figuring out what kinds of Aquatic media you’re really into, as Aqua as an aesthetic genre can actually be somewhat vast! If you haven’t already, I would recommend taking a glance over at my “What is Aqua?” post to get a good idea of just what all may be included under the label. Who knows, you may just realize something I don’t have listed fits the definition!

If you like Aqua Mouses though, I think I may have a decent idea as to what else you may like.

Aqua Mouses are most known for their tanks full of alcohol and colored oil which creates a 2 layer liquid appearance, most often with a charm floating on top, riding the wave so to speak.

If that’s peak Aqua appeal for you, you may also take interest in Liquid Wave Paperweights, Liquid Motion Timers, and Floater Keychains!

For the purpose of collecting, some of my personal favorite buy & sell sites have been Mercari, eBay, Etsy, Amazon, and AliExpress. Mercari is great for buying lots of items, and if you’re buying multiple things from one seller, they will often be open to bundling to save on shipping, sometimes quite uncommon items will pop up as well! eBay is great for less common and vintage items, I’ve gotten most of my best scores from there. Etsy is also good for the same reasons as eBay. Amazon can have a decent selection, including bulk items! AliExpress often has lots of cheaper items, but be warned, sometimes items will be of inferior quality, definitely check reviews! With the first 3 you can save searches and set it up so you receive notifications if a new item matching the keywords you saved is listed, this is my go-to method usually. If you have the chance though, check out some touristy locations and look for souvenir shops! They’ll very often have some Aqua items, at least from my experience. Found some myself just today!

Now as for my particular favorites, I’m rather fond of Water Games! Specifically vintage, bizarre, and or tech-mimicking (Faux Tech) kinds! Water Games are the bulk of my collection really, as they’re usually on the cheaper side, and are simple nostalgic fun!

As for blogs and image boards, there sadly aren’t many out there about the broad idea of Aqua that I’m currently aware of, that’s part of why I started this blog actually! However, I’ve recommended them before and I’ll do so again; @bootlegpals and @oceantoyz are great blogs that also post occasional Aqua content! Real cool people, check ‘em out for sure.

Pinterest can also sometimes be a decent source for Aqua images you haven’t already seen, though I’ll warn you, it can take a little while of searching and training the algorithm through what you view and save to really start showing you some neat stuff. Just be aware: a lot of images that aren’t uploaded directly from source links are not credited at all, but a bit of reverse image searching can remedy this if you intend on sharing the images yourself.

obligatory introduction post

hi guys i'm mando. (my father and abuelo are nando).

i'm trans in a hyper-macho/repressed way (han solo, dean winchester, indiana jones, you get the picture), bi in a very gay way (i have been pining over the same idiot for the past 5 years, which might make appearances in tags), adhd and autistic in the sexiest way possible (oscillate wildly between golden retriever and spock). i also stream on twitch sometimes, under a pseudonym you totally can't find by snooping through a music link included in this post.

this account is literally whatever i feel like (occasional 18+ humour, follow under your own discretion etc etc). the only thing i properly tag anymore is vid so i can find them again easier, and "personal" if i gotta vent or whatever (for potential tag blocking purposes). i still update the star trek blog, my dean aesthetic blog, and my bfu one (once in a blue moon), but they are products of past hyperfixations (which i may or may not return to on occasion).

i do a lot of writing (give it up for escapism as a coping method 🤪), particularly on my ao3 (+pwp account), of which i'll post updates on my writing blog as well.

fanfic-wise, there is always a lot of variation, so your best bet at prediction (especially considering my chronic exhaustion as a deterrent) is the fandoms list on ao3 or the stuff i've been posting on this blog. original work-wise, i tend to write comedic satire. i currently have one published work, but it is in my university's anthology, and i will not just dox myself so easily lol. once my exhaustion clears up and i start to submit to magazines/contests again, maybe i'll start sharing that too.

i am also an academic (ewwww). i am planning on going to med school and doing research (and have been considering writing papers in the near future too), but am also a huge nerd in both musicology and english related stuff, ESPECIALLY media analysis. (i don't tend to post a lot of media analysis, but i might pop off in tags if my meds freshly kick in)

autism fixation is definitely music (as in, way too much music history—eg. i was obsessed and even crushed over classical composers in elementary school; am always in a handful of music ensembles and own 20+ instruments atm; musicology in the sense of theory and how different songs/genres function and how we as people interpret them; music in cultural anthropology ie how it has affected history in a broader sense and the societal impacts of things such as the western teaching of music (bad), how music has been used as a voice or for protest and to convey different messages, the effect of music in film, my beef against terms like "jazz" or "folk" because (for jazz) like 95% of music can fall under the definition).

ANYWAYS. you can look at my playlists (shoutout to bad taste in music (real, not fake) ), but since a lot of them are messy/outdated and i mostly rely on albums/already-made playlists, feel free to follow my spotify for the sole reason that you can see what i'm listening to (or whether i'm actually having a good taste for once or i'm going insane listening to heinz baked beans the who or megalovania on repeat for 7 hours again)

this is a post about my thoughts and feelings regarding physical media and it turned out kinda long and ramble-y so I’m putting it under a read me just to kind of. not clog y’all’s shit with it jdbjdbdj feel free to read if you’d like, I just. Had some words to say and wanted to get it Out :)) anyways i lov physical media it’s my best friend

sitting here thinking about physical media again and just wondering like. why did we move SO far away from it??? of course cds and dvds are still being made and haven’t ever Stopped but like the idea that it’s Weird or Quirky to want to own or use these things is baffling to me. Of course I understand the pros of streaming and digital media, they absolutely exist and I’d be insane to say get rid of it completely. But I genuinely do think it’s strange how far removed we’ve been becoming from physical, tangible media. Now of course a large part of this blame is on the corporations wanting to force people to keep shelling out money for endless subscription services and on tech companies for removing things like disk drives and USB ports from their computers and laptops for “””aesthetic””” and money reasons but like. I’d say most cars still have CD players??? and honestly cds are not very expensive like they’re cheaper than I assumed. And they last for SO long??? And you *own* it. You buy it and it’s yours forever, not just until whatever company updates it’s tos and adds in weird clauses or whatever the fuck nintendo does to its consoles or until you stop paying monthly for access or until whatever it is gets moved to a NEW streaming service that also costs 14.99 a month on top of the 3 other ones you gotta have. you know??? i mean with tumblr and the people I interact with online I feel like this is a fairly shared sentiment. I just have been thinking a lot and been getting increasingly frustrated with streaming platforms as time goes on. And honestly?? The fucking JOY I get from just popping a cd in my car and blasting that shit, or putting a record on while I clean my room is fucking unparalleled for REAL. even just simply putting a shitty movie like mamma Mia (which is a masterpiece do NOT get me wrong) into my laptop and being able to watch it completely uninterrupted and completely offline!! it’s genuinely so fun and honestly helps me separate from my phone a bit. like when you don’t Have to rely on one object for every single thing you genuinely feel a little bit better!! at least for me anyways. and btw these sentiments also extend to books (ebook and audio, bc there Are ways to actually own those also and those are good for a variety of reasons including accessibility) but I’ve never like. set aside books in the same manner as dvds and cds and vinyls, like books have always been there in their exact form so I feel like I don’t have to touch on that as much. idk!! i have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this topic, i could probably go on for a while longer but I won’t!! except to say this: genuinely, getting back into using these forms of media has done something for my mental health in a way I can’t quite explain. it just feels good!! Feels right feels natural!! and I hope more people get back into these things.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (2017)

The original Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is, without a doubt, the SEGA Master System game ever. It looks, sounds, and plays every bit like the distilled very best of SEGA's 8-bit offerings and is arguably (both by myself and many other fans of the system) the best game available for the console.

Having opened this review with such high praise, I probably don't have to say that if any remake of that game were anything less than absolutely stellar and amazing work, I would not be kind to it. I would hold nothing back, show no quarter, take the gloves off, let rip, and tear it a new one. Luckily, it's absolutely amazing and stellar work.

Essentially that's because this is an emulation of the original Master System ROM with a pretty new skin running over the top of it. Okay, maybe a bit more complex than that, but the game logic running here is basically 1:1 with the SMS version even if, and this includes the game with retro visuals and sounds enabled, there are some changes elsewhere.

Good changes, mind you -- what the kiddies like to call 'quality of life' stuff. Really though, how quality do you need your life if your biggest worries are what creature comforts and conveniences a videogame offers you? But I digress here, there's a whole-ass separate button for special weapon usage and the equipment menu is a much more pleasant-to-navigate affair. And, mercifully, they've got rid of that fucking 'charm point' system that I personally felt was an idea that didn't service this game style as well as it would a more-conventional RPG. And, in essence, all it meant was exiting a shop to remove the Goblin Mail, re-entering, seeing the stuff for sale that should've been for sale anyway. Yeah, that tedium's gone.

There are some small layout changes as well, presumably to even-out the challenge a little. But this is all piecemeal stuff compared to the aesthetic overhaul. Oh, wow, the aesthetic overhaul. Let me, frankly, gush.

Imagine a retro game not just upscaled, not just redrawn, but completely reimagined with the utmost passion, respect, and care for the source material. That's The Dragon's Trap right here.

It. Is. Fucking. Beautiful.

Featureless flat areas with naught but trees are now expansive meadows featuring a memorial to a battle long-since passed, continuing onto a valley with a tower hidden inside a forest by the lake. Standard platform gauntlets across a body of water are now a set of tropical islets in a luxurious ocean that culminates in a shipwreck telling a tale of caution and intrigue before the great offscreen unknown. And there's a little stool outside a hut by a lava lake where the owner has carelessly left some impaled marshmallows to toast in the heat. There is so much attention to detail here, and cute little touches, and visual storytelling, it's tough not to fall in love all over again. The game that was my adventurous escape in childhood, is equally so if not more in adulthood.

Music's amazing, too. Not a single piece feels wrong or updated without the full knowledge of what made the original tunes 'pop'. Particular favourites of mine are the desert and jungle themes, both of which have instrumentation that perfectly encapsulates their host environments and makes the adventure connect on an even deeper level.

I am, however, overlooking some of-its-time "flaws" in this game. I don't care. I even put "flaws" in those scare-quotes because, fuck it, they don't make games like this anymore so there's no reason to change it to be more like games they do make. That one Steam reviewer who says the controls are slippery and the coins bounce over the player's head, you're wrong mate. Couldn't be wronger. Maybe a dragon cursed that guy and he's typing with tiny mouse hands that can barely reach the controller buttons?

Anyway, my recent 2.5 hour afternoon playthrough of this game made me fall in love with it for like the hundredth time. Here's to a hundred more.

Introduction | Brief Analysis

"What makes you employable? How do you show a potential employer that you are what they are looking for? This module provides an opportunity for you to learn which skills and attributes are considered most important in the animation industry. You will reflect on your skills and set targets to address any gaps to boost your employability before you graduate."

As one could expect when bringing up the prospect of future employment to college students or any young person, this sent me into a state of panic. What do I want to do? What makes me as an artist unique? How do I want to spend my life?

Currently with the work that I've done, I consider myself an animation generalist, as I've worked with both 2D and 3D media. However, I am more partial to 2D and mixed media animation. Ultimately my interests lie in creative writing, storytelling and social design in addition to the above.

In order to actually do anything with the above though, I realise that I need to first get a job. Sadly, I cannot go guns blazing into the working world with these interests and a dream held together by toothpicks and candle wax. I've decided for immediate future purposes that I should focus my attention on creating 2D animations and illustrations, with a dash of mixed media thrown in for good measure. This would help me get a job which would be the means to which I reach my end goal.

COMPONENT I

"Write a research report about a part of the animation industry that interests you. It could be about how a specific technique is employed - for example - the use of real time backgrounds in the production of The Mandalorian. It could be a cultural enquiry - such as exploring the rise of K-Pop aesthetics, or an ethical issue, such as exploring ‘crunch time’ or gender issues in the videogames and/or animation industry. These examples are purely illustrative - you could choose anything within reason."

Immediately in terms of topics, once again I want to work on a topic that pertains to my interests. This would include; the mixed media animation workflow, 3D animation combined with 2D FX (The Spiderverse Effect), or innovation in animation. As time progresses I shall update this blog with several variations of these topics with case specific ideas.

COMPONENT II

"Write a reflective report on the area of the animation industry that you would like to work in. Comment on the skills required for that area (using the ScreenSkills website and further independent research) and what you will need to do to meet them. Use primary and secondary research to add detail, insight and interest to the report."

I would like to preface this section with saying I do not plan to step within five feet within the animation industry unless absolutely necessary, for a temporary period of time. However, if I were to choose which field to enter, I would choose a place which is rooted in art and history. Conversely, I would also like to spend my time in a design oriented place. If it absolutely had to be within the industry, I would like to work either in a Game Design studio or a 2D or mixed media animation studio. As such, I have currently (subject to change) narrowed it down to these 6 places:

Museum of Metropolitan and Contemporary Art

Riot House

KiCo Design Studio

THE LINE Animation

Studio Grackle

Supergiant Games

The main reason I have chosen these locations is because of the positive work ethic within the institutions. I thoroughly believe a solid work-life balance is key to creating qualitative art, and as such I have chosen places that reflect this philosophy.

In terms of the research report, of course the latter three options lend themselves well to my expertise. This would of course be 2D animation and game design (as of now). Additionally, Component II requires proof of a showreel and the maintenance of a digital presence on an outline platform such as LinkedIn or Instagram. I have prepared both of these in advance for the purpose of showing my growth throughout the course of this module this semester.

With a solid plan now, I can begin ideation on Component I for this module.

Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022 review: The premium, lightweight Windows 11 laptop receives an update

The newest laptop from the brand is slim and powerful enough to handle heavy workloads.

Huawei's MateBook line includes some of the best and most reasonably priced laptops on the market.

It closely resembles Apple's MacBook Pro series in terms of appearance and aesthetic, but it outperforms comparably priced laptops in terms of pricing and specs.

We adored the MateBook X Pro from 2021. It has an eye-catching new emerald green finish and quick performance for handling heavy professional workloads.

The 2022 model, on the other hand, has a new semi-matte metallic covering, improves the laptop's wonky webcam placement, and receives an internal upgrade with a 12th-generation Intel CPU. Over the model from the previous year, that is a significant performance improvement.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro's 2022 update has been put through its paces so that we can share our assessment with you. For a complete evaluation, keep reading.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro is one of the greatest Windows laptops on the market. Although it costs a hefty £1,699 and is the closest thing to a Windows Macbook you'll find, its overall performance and luxuriously contrasty display show that it's more than just a basic knockoff laptop.

The 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro pro is a real challenger to Apple's hegemony in the lightweight laptop market, and it offers better value for money than other models from Dell and Microsoft.

Design

The 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro's chassis isn't much that different from the one from the previous year. It is still a superbly made, small, magazine-thin device with minimum branding save from an Intel Evo label, covert venting, and a shallow, delightfully comfortable keyboard.

Huawei chose a matte finish this year rather than the glossy, beetle-shell shine of the emerald green 2021 model, which should appeal to users in the centre of the market.

The 3.1k display is physically larger than last year’s model

The laptop was designed to open gracefully with a single finger, just like it could last year. The 2022 version is somewhat bigger and marginally lighter than the earlier iteration. To notice the change, you'd need to compare the touchpad and the laptop's bottom edge side by side.

Display and audio

You can see why the Huawei MateBook X Pro is still one of our top-rated laptops by opening it. The smooth 90Hz refresh rate and 3120 x 2080 resolution of the 14.2-inch display creates a realistic-looking sense of movement on-screen. Its high brightness prevents detail from being lost in the screen's darker areas, making it an excellent laptop for entertainment as well as for use in offices and during daylight hours, when dim screens might appear washed-out and pale.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro's screen has a 3:2 aspect ratio, making it roughly the same size and shape as an A4 piece of paper. For more useful tasks like online browsing and document editing, that is taller than the increasingly antiquated 16:9 widescreen display (the same one you have on your television).

The four front-firing speakers on the 2021 model astonished us because they produced powerful audio for such a tiny laptop. The 2022 version slightly improves on this by adding an additional pair of speakers that manage to create deep, bassy sound without adding too much distortion. They are very clear in the voice range, which is advantageous for Zoom conversations and video conferencing.

Webcam

The primary complaint raised against the Huawei MateBook X Pro last year was the webcam's unusual placement, which was hidden beneath a pop-up key on the keyboard, giving coworkers an ugly view straight up your nostrils during calls. This is fixed in the 2022 version, which gives you a less-alien-appearing presence in meetings by positioning the webcam above the screen where it belongs.

Although Huawei was able to do this without significantly expanding the screen's border, the camera still isn't very good. In low light, which for the UK is five months out of the year, the 720p resolution appears grainy and out of focus, but the audio quality is clear and sharp and is zhuzheed up by Huawei's fancy processing effects.

Performance

The most significant changes this year can be seen under the hood. The latest Intel Core i7 1260P processor, a power-efficient chip made for ultrathin portables, is used in the Huawei Matebook X Pro configuration that we evaluated. It is backed by 16GB of RAM. This has more than enough power to complete daily chores, manage memory-intensive Chrome tabs, and stream media.

Additionally, it provides a lot of performance headroom for tasks that require more, such as creative work that uses a lot of memory. Therefore, this portable laptop is well-suited for Adobe Creative Suite photo, video, and audio editing.

Although this is still a device focused on work, the energy-efficient CPU and integrated graphics chip aren't a great match for serious gaming, but they'll happily handle less graphically demanding titles. This laptop is unaffected by the occasional game of Football Manager or Minecraft, and when it does start working hard, the cooling system is typically silent and unobtrusive.

The chiclet keyboard is comfortable to type on for long periods

The MateBook X Pro has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C connections on one side and another pair on the right. As a result of the loss of the older USB-A connector, an additional dongle is required to plug in some accessories, but it is sufficient to simultaneously fast charge the laptop and attach a display. Although Huawei supplies a USB-A adaptor in the package, if you want an HDMI connection or an SD card reader, you'll have to pay extra.

Battery life

The Huawei MateBook X Pro can consume energy like it's at a buffet thanks to its brilliant, high-resolution display and 90Hz refresh rate. You'll get a solid seven to eight hours of use between charges if you keep the refresh rate set to the default 60Hz and pay attention to screen brightness.

At 1.26kg, the MateBook X Pro is as portable as ultrathin get (Huawei)

That's fine if you frequently use your laptop close to a plug outlet, but for a truly portable device that can confidently make it across the Atlantic without shutting down over Greenland, the new Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 or the Dell XPS 15 in its non-OLED configuration are better choices in this price range.

Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022 is the winner.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022 upgrade is a fantastic Windows notebook with a stunningly sharp, 90Hz display and top-tier performance. Along with modernizing the components surrounding the 12th generation Intel chip, Huawei has also addressed our greatest complaint with the previous model by moving the webcam to the top of the display.

However, the limited number of connectors is frustrating and makes attaching external devices like specialized webcams and microphones a hassle. At least the laptop has a dongle for HDMI, VGA, and USB-A connections.

Although the MateBook X Pro costs $1,699, we think it looks better than the smaller Dell XPS 13, which is £50 less expensive. Additionally, it boasts a better display than the £1,699 Surface Laptop 5, which has the same specifications. Even if you spent less, it would be difficult to find an ultralight Windows 11 laptop with this level of refinement.
