The great beauty referred to in the title of Paolo Sorrentino's film is Rome itself, which for millennia has transcended the ugliness that has overrun its seven hills. It's a city whose beauty and ugliness are seen in the film from the point of view of Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), who is celebrating his 65th birthday as the film begins. Jep is a bit like a straight Roman Truman Capote: He first received acclaim 40 years earlier for a well-received novella, but the rest of his life has been spent as a celebrity journalist, interviewing and gossiping about the rich and famous. This career has earned him his own fame and fortune -- he lives in a luxurious apartment whose balcony overlooks the Colosseum. The Rome in which Jep moves is filled with absurdity and excess: a performance artist who runs headlong into an ancient aqueduct; a little girl who has made millions by splashing canvases with paint and then smearing and tearing at them in a tantrum; a doctor who maintains a kind of assembly-line botox clinic in which patrons take numbers as if they were waiting in a delicatessen; a saintly centenarian Mother Teresa-style missionary whose spokesman is an oily dude with a shark-toothed grin; an archbishop considered next in line for the papacy who can only talk about food; and hordes of glitterati who spout inanities that they think will pass for wit. The Great Beauty is a satire, of course, but oddly it's a satire with heart: Jep Gambardella's long-since-broken heart. Servillo is terrific in the key role: elegant and cynical, but also capable of exposing idiots for what they are. Jep and the film in which he appears have obviously been compared to Marcello Mastroianni's character in La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini, 1960), but Jep is less jaded than Marcello, less ground down by the decadence. And Sorrentino's view of his Rome is more genially ironic than Fellini's carnival of grotesques. Beautifully filmed by Luca Bigazzi, with a score by Lele Marchitelli augmented with works by contemporary composers like David Lang, Arvo Pärt, John Taverner, Henryk Górecki, and Vladimir Martynov, The Great Beauty was a deserving winner of the 2013 Oscar for foreign-language film.

Impossível esquecer a imagem de Sean Penn nesse filme. Mesmo que você, como eu, não tenha assistido. Ao colocar os olhos na figura inspirada em Robert Smith do The Cure e reconhecer atrás da maquiagem o ator americano, qulaquer um ficaria interessado no filme. Acontece que passou pela cidade e não fui ver. Aí o Mubi me manda um email com esse longa no filme do dia e me diz que foi dirigido pelo italiano Paolo Sorrentino, a curiosidade aumentou e fui logo assistir.

depois de ver: interessante ver como a narrativa do diretor italiano parece fluir melhor na sua língua e país natal, mas longe de atrapalhar a história aqui contada. Penn está muito bem e é um filme muito interessante.

Vicenza, al teatro Astra la Biennale Internazionale del Cortometraggio dal 18 al 26 settembre

Vicenza, ritorna dal 18 al 26 settembre a Vicenza la Biennale internazionale del cortometraggio, giunta quest'anno alla terza edizione. Durante i nove giorni della rassegna, organizzata da Is Art e diretta da Luca Dal Molin, short film provenienti da tutto il mondo saranno proposti gratuitamente al pubblico insieme ad incontri con attori, registi, produttori, distributori, critici e giornalisti, tra cui Daniele Ciprì, Umberto Contarello, Lorenza Indovina, Danilo Rea, i Manetti Bros e i fratelli De Serio. "Si tratta di una rassegna di alto livello – dichiara l'assessore alla cultura Simona Siotto – che contribuisce ad arricchire un settembre veramente denso di proposte culturali. Il Comune sostiene l'iniziativa mettendo a disposizione le location degli eventi". Il teatro Astra sarà le sede principale delle proiezioni e degli incontri. All'inaugurazione di sabato 18 settembre alle 18 sarà presentato in anteprima nazionale un teaser lungo del film "Gotico padano", un omaggio al film cult “La casa dalle finestre che ridono“ di Pupi Avati realizzato dai registi vicentini Roberto Leggio e Gabriele Grotto, che uscirà nel 2022. Saranno più di 300 i cortometraggi proposti nelle sezioni Overtour di corti nella serata inaugurale, Animazione per l’infanzia, Internazionale, Italiana, Cortometraggi della regista Agns Varda’, Pedalata retrò: corti in bicicletta, Focus dedicato alla Polonia con 10 cortometraggi, Corti prodotti da RAI Cinema, Festival Mantova Lovers, Vincitori del festival video Essay film festival di Roma con la presentazione di Mario Sesti. Molte le presenze che definiranno l’edizione 2021 della Biennale, a cominciare dal regista e direttore della fotografia Daniele Cipri. Il regista sarà protagonista della giornata inaugurale sabato 18 settembre. Barbara Tarricone di Sky Cinema nello speciale Women to Watch incontrerà le attrici Lorenza Indovina e Michela Andreozzi, lunedì 20 e martedì 21 settembre. Martedì 21 settembre è in programma una master class con i registi Gianluca e Massimiliano De Serio. Giovedì 23 settembre saranno consegnati i premi al miglior sceneggiatore Umberto Contarello e al miglior musicista Danilo Rea. Sabato 25 c'è l'incontro con i registi Manetti Bros e l’attrice Daniela Piperno. Nel corso della Biennale uno spazio particolare sarà dedicato alla video arte, con la mostra "Damaged Goods" nella sala degli Zavatteri in Basilica Palladiana del duo svedese Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg: lei è una protagonista della scena artistica contemporanea internazionale, lui è un musicista particolarmente noto negli ambienti dell’elettronica e della sperimentazione. Per tutta la durata del festival la Loggia del Capitaniato in piazza dei Signori accoglierà l’Info Point, con incontri con ospiti della Biennale e dirette radio dalle 10 alle 12 e il negozio della Biennale. L'accesso alle proiezioni al teatro Astra e all'esposizione nella sala degli Zavatteri dovrà avvenire nel rispetto delle normative anti Covid, previa presentazione del green pass.
