Ilvermorny Student OCs Patronus Meaning
Even though I honestly prefer Patroni as the plural of Patronus, I have to make sure that this is accessible to get searched by a majority of the fandom if I wanna get attention, soooo here’s the meaning behind my student OCs’ Patronuses. Also, most of these animals were chosen for their meaning and relevance to the character rather than using the Pottermore test, since that test obviously doesn’t have all animals that exist on its list.
Philomel Fiegel - Wire Fox Terrier
Although a nightingale would have matched with his name, the wire fox terrier fits a bit better imo because it’s the breed that’s won the most Best in Show titles at Westminster Kennel Club dog shows. It fits with his love for performance.
Ulysses Whippor - Doberman Pinscher
Again, a character named for an animal, yet their true Patronus works better. I chose the Doberman pinscher because it’s a common breed used for guard dogs, and although they’re stereotyped as being ferocious and aggressive, they  are known for their good natured temperament, extreme loyalty, high intelligence, are energetic, watchful, fearless and obedient, and are more likely to show aggression towards strangers and other dogs than their owners, and are fiercely protective of their loved ones. Just how I imagine Ulysses to be!
Renault Hogue - Hedgehog
The relation to his surname was merely a happy coincidence. In most European countries, hedgehogs are believed to be a hard-working no-nonsense animal. This partially results from the folk belief that hedgehogs collect apples and mushrooms and carry them to their secret storage (though in reality apples aren’t part of its diet and they don’t really carry food back to their den anyway). Fitting nonetheless. Additionally, in some of the Harry Potter video games, a Famous Wizard Card features a wizard named Thadeus Thurkell, who had 7 all Squib sons, who he Transfigured into hedgehogs. I thought a hedgehog as his Patronus would be a happy contrast.
Gelos Tristan - Hyena
Hyenas and their symbology in folk lore seems to be somewhat divided. In West African folklore, they’re mostly associated with negative traits like cowardice, thievery, immorality, and dirty habits, but in East Africa the hyena is said to have been a solar animal that brought the sun to warm the cold earth, much like how Gelos tries to warm the hearts of others. In Tanzania, they’re said to be the mounts of witches. Other negative traits include stupidity, treachery, the physical incarnation of jinns, cannibalistic or vampiric monster people, were said to be able to mesmerize people with their eyes and sometimes pheromones, and though feared, were also symbolic of love and fertility.
Mostly, of course, I chose a hyena because of their vocalizations sounding like raucous human laughter.

Ilvermorny Student OCs Etymologies
As I said in the first post about them, it took a looooong while to figure out good etymologies for my characters, since in the HP universe almost everyone has names that fit their personalities (thanks to Naming Seers). Several days of headaches and exhaustion, but like I said, it was worth it!
Philomel “Philo” Fiegel
Philomel: An archaic name for a nightingale, based on the Greek character Philomela, who was turned into one. A nightingale is considered one of, if not the most, beautiful-sounding songbirds.
Philo: Meaning “loving, kind, friendly, affectionate, compassionate, supporter, friendly or helpful to another.”
Fiegel: A metonymic occupational name for a fiddler, related to the Middle High German vüege (”Skillful; adroit”). “Fiddler; violin”/”Skillful; adroit”.
((I chose these names because I love music, and to me music is my favorite method of performance. Music can move you (physically and emotionally), can inspire you. Plus, Celestina Warbeck is a singer, and Warehouse 13 intended to have a nightingale artifact for a musical episode, so I had to name him after this. He’s definitely friendly like his middle name (and coincidentally, it’s the first name of Philo Farnsworth, inventor of the television, something useful for a performer who wants the world to see him, and a character involved in WH13!), and Fiegel was also part of the musical motif of his inspiration. Plus, names with alliteration sound so much more magical and strange to me.))
Ulysses Whippor
Ulysses: The Latin/Roman name of the Greek hero Odysseus, hero of Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. Known for his 10 year epic journey home, intellect, versatility, guile. When he returns, he slaughters all the men aiming for his wife’s hand and his serving women who slept with them. “Wrathful, angry.”
Whippor: An alteration of the Whip-poor-will, another songbird, named for its song, and identified in the poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill” with “the lonely and poor but vibrant life of the mountain people.”
((As a bully with a strained home life, I wanted a name that showed his anger, obviously. Coincidentally, Ulysses S. Grant (whose name was chosen from a ballot drawn from a hat several weeks after he was born) was a Commanding General in the American Civil War, and an artifact of his was featured in WH13! As for his surname, I thought it was fun having the main OTP of my quartet have songbirds in common. Interestingly, “The Mountain Whippoorwill” is a poem written by Stephen Vincent Binet about a fiddling contest.))
Renault Cyrus Markwart-Hogue
Renault: The French Renault comes from the Germanic Reginald, meaning “ruler’s adviser.”
Cyrus: Persian, meaning “Sun, throne, royal, kingly.”
Markwart: From Middle Low German, an occupational name meaning “borderland guardian.”
Hogue: According to Wikipedia, it’s a topographic name originating from the Old Norse word “haugr”, meaning “hill” or “mound”. According to House of Names, it means “a careful and prudent person.”
((As a whole, having a long name like Renault’s gives an air of stuffiness and pride, at least in my opinion. Interestingly, Renault is the name of a lot of French people in high positions like politicians, philosophers, scientists, military personnel, etc. Cyrus alludes to his ambitions to having a high position at MACUSA like his mother. Markwart, which I originally found as his mother’s surname and added later, I suppose can match with his protectiveness towards his friends. Hogue was chosen before I saw it’s Wikipedia page, but I still like HoN’s description. It matches his personality, and is similar to the animal hog (for which Hogsmeade and Hogwarts are named). Most importantly, pigs are notoriously anti-magical in the HP universe, being extremely hard to be affectedby the simplest of charms, and its use as an insult is a reference both to his admittedly not-that-great magical prowess and his father’s status as a Squib.))
Gelos Ruth Tristan
Gelos: In Greek mythology, Gelos is the divine personification of laughter.
Ruth: From Hebrew and Syriac, meaning “Companion, friend, friendship, beautiful, vision, compassionate.”
Tristan: From the Celtic “drystan”, meaning “sorrowful”. Tristram and Tristan are derived from the Celtic, meaning “bold, tumult, noise”, and the French and the German, meaning “sad”.
((My choice for Gelos’ first name should be obvious, his middle name too. His surname was given to him after I chose it for his father, and is a reference to his parentage like Renault’s.))

Ilvermorny OCs: Students
Since I’m an impatient one, I decided I’d unveil what I currently have of my newest OCs. Took several days of researching etymologies, woods, cores, and animals for hours and hours on end, burning myself out and giving myself headaches on multiple occasions, but it was worth it!
Putting it under a Readmore line since it’s a long post.
Philomel “Philo” Fiegel - The Performer
Philomel Fiegel loves attention, and his biggest ambition in life is to become one of the greatest magical performers in all the Wizarding World, having been inspired by the great Singing Sorceress, the Witch That’s Always on Pitch, Celestina Warbeck! He enjoys showing off, but isn’t a snobby prick about it, and most of his spells are colorful and showy, stuff he could use to put on a great show. Having a mother interested in fashion certainly added to his flair for the dramatic, and he enjoys wearing clothes that get him noticed. The second to accept Ulysses into the group, whether he feels a certain way about that tough brooding bruiser, he won’t say.
House: Thunderbird
Wand: Spruce, Dragon Hearstring, 13″, Swishy
Patronus: Wire fox terrier
Parents: Chandler Pippin and Iris Fiegel
Ulysses Whippor - The Bully
Ulysses Whippor was one of Ilvermorny’s punks. Still is, if you look at him funny. But after getting threatened with expulsion from Ilvermorny after one incident too many, Philomel and his other two friends took it upon themselves to help him clean up their act. Well, Ulysses pushed them, it was Gelos who agreed to it first. He tends to keep to himself and at first didn’t much talk to the others, but he slowly started to warm to the attention and soften up. Just don’t mention it, or he might jinx your mouth sewn shut. He does actually like having friends, it’s a welcome change from the loneliness at home. And if you enjoy having a jaw, I suggest you don’t bring up the fact that he watched Philo leave the dinner table a little longer than what’s considered normal.
House: Wampus
Wand: Black Walnut, Rougarou Hair, 12 3/4″, Slightly Yielding
Patronus: Doberman Pinscher
Parents: Damien Loveday and Dicy Whippor
Renault Cyress Markwart-Hogue - The Official
Renault sort of reminds me of Hermione Granger and Percy Weasley. His father works at Ilvermorny and his mother works at MACUSA, so of course he aims for a high legal position. No nonsense (mostly), and despised Ulysses the most; mostly because he was the one who started the trend of people calling him “Hog”, and of insulting his father. His main goal is to try and stamp down on discrimination in the Wizarding World, a big issue even today. But, until he gets there, he has to find a way to live a little, and his friends know just how to help. Although the third to join the official friend quartet, he and Gelos were decent friends beforehand given Gelos’ father used to be married to Renault’s mother.
House: Horned Serpent
Wand: Beech, Unicorn Hair, 10 2/3″, Pliable
Patronus: Hedgehog
Parents: Hedgenettle Hogue and Limia Markwart
Gelos Ruth Tristan - The Clown
Gelos is the most accepting of everyone, and he and Philo were the first two in their quartet to become friends, probably because their personalities and goals are so similar. He’s one of the class clowns of Ilvermorny (having started a well-meaning underground club of clowns with the intent of “Livening up every day in some special way.”), and arguably one of the best. Like Philo, he likes attention in the form of laughter, and loves seeing people smile, and when they became friends, they agreed to work together as a performing duo, bringing smiles across the nation and beyond! He’s almost always happy-go-lucky, though you’d be wrong to assume he doesn’t understand the less happy things in life, he’s not daft. He’s just used to having to use his comedic talents to bring people out of serious funks, so he does it whenever he can for students having a rough day.
House: Pukwudgie
Wand: Rowan, Wampus Hair, 11 1/2″, Whippy
Patronus: Hyena
Parents: Acheron Tyburn Tristan and Kelly Leclair
