time to get back to the bedrock of this blog: being mad at bad history
i'm reading Andrew Roberts*'s George III book & he comments, after Franklin's remark upon signing the Declaration of Independence, that "we must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we will hang separately":
"Franklin and the other signatories were in little or no danger of being hanged in the event of defeat, unless they had fallen into the hands of Loyalist partisans."
this is frustratingly bad and partisan history (his overall thesis is that George was Good, Actually) - his argument is that many people in Parliament were in favor of winning hearts and minds in the Colonies & therefore that the leaders would have been pardoned -- but there's a pretty big difference in tactics before you put down a major revolt and after.
Roberts is correct that the signatories of the Declaration were not punished by the Crown, but somehow forgets that that's because, at the end of their rebellion, the Crown did not have the power to punish them.
#*'napoleon had x official mistresses + y mistresses he hid. this was to keep up appearances of being Virile#like. the most recent major rising in the UK is the Jacobites#who - as we all know - were treated with mercy and allowed to return home to the Highlands#bad history

I love how i heard about the british government falling and i was like 'duh what r u even surprised about what's the fuss' and then a moot of mine reminded me that in the uk, unlike italy, governments last more than 3 months each
#i was legit bamboozled#wdym yall are shocked we had more prime ministers than my father had mistresses#i thought this was common apparently it is Not#vote larry the cat or smth that feline looks smart#or start the proletarian revolution idk u choose babies have fun#uk politics
