UFC 293: Israel Adesanya vs. Sean Strickland

It's such an incredibly long shot, but I petition the gods of MMA to be with Sean Strickland tonight. The absurdity of this shitkicking loudmouth psychopath contrarian becoming Middleweight Champion of The God Damned World would surely bring hilarity and joy to the faces of innocent babes everywhere.

Manel Kape takes UD over Felipe dos Santos.

This is up there with the most offensive-minded that Manel Kape has been in the UFC, but it was not by choice. Dos Santos gave Kape everything he could handle and more. Kape did a great job of countering. Drew out reactions really well from FdS and blasted them when he got the looks he wanted. Problem is unlike every other opponent Kape has beaten in the UFC, FdS never stopped coming forward. That meant Kape would try to circle out of an exchange and occasionally get popped with something. Or he would be forced to extend exchanges in order to get Dos Santos to back off. Sometimes that worked out well for him - he lit Dos Santos up a few times. Other times his form and footwork would crumble and he would get tagged hard. Happened a few times. His saving grace was honestly that he hit a lot harder than FdS. If this was more of a tit for tat situation with Kape not really having the pop he does, it might have cost him on the cards. In a lot of ways it was a fine veteran performance against a specific type of opponent (young, undefeated, brave and sturdy) that should give a counter puncher like Kape grief but also maybe not one you want when you're trying to get a title fight.

I've watched the Strickland/Adesanya fight three times now in the past day, and every breakdown on it that passed me by on the YouTubes. I can think of no greater upset in all of mixed martial arts: what an absolutely unexpected masterclass in the simplest and least-showy basics of fighting implemented perfectly, resulting in a David & Goliath story for our times.

Sean Strickland Ends Adesanya's Reign At UFC 293

It wasn't supposed to be this way, but it is.

With a victory via unanimous decision, Sean Strickland has pulled off the biggest upset in UFC history and become the middleweight champion.

This is the stuff of nightmares as far as I'm concerned. It ruins any plcontent I had planned for the Du Plesis-Adesanya fight, and it also means there are no more African champions in the UFC.

For his part, Sean Strickland was sensational, he managed to keep himseld relatively safe, took very little damage and was superb defensively. He took away Iggy's ability to control the pace and time his strikes by pressuring, keeping Izzy moving and landing 1-2's kept Izzy on the backfoot and meant he could'nt showcase his striking.

Adesanya is now 1-2 in his last 3 fights, and while you can assume he will likely rematch Strickland, you are officially watching the competition catch up and find the game plan to defeat Izzy, and it feels like a historic/defining moment in the middleweight division.
