Southern 630 Steam Locomotive por Tim and Renda Por Flickr: Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's steam locomotive Southern 630 stands alongside the boarding platform of the the former Birmingham Terminal Station after an excursion. The Southern 630 pulled the Norfolk Southern Railroad's 21st Century Steam Excursion from Birmingham to Wilton, Alabama. Southern 630 was built in 1904 by The American Locomotive Company for the Southern Railway. This 2-8-0 Consolidation served the Southern Railway for 48 years working the Asheville North Carolina Division on the Murphy and Lake Toxaway Branches. The locomotive was sold to the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad pulling trains between Johnson City and Elizabethton, Tennessee until 1967 when Southern Railway reacquired the locomotive for Southern’s steam excursion program. The 630 was the star of the mainline excursions until 1978 when it was deemed that the expanding train lengths exceeded the capacity of the small locomotive. TVRM continued to operate the locomotive under a lease from Southern Railway. In need of a major overhaul, the locomotive was retired from operations in 1989. In 1999, Norfolk Southern donated the locomotive to TVRM. In 2001, TVRM began a lengthy restoration. After 10 years of restoration work, the 630 returned to the rails in 2011. On September 13, 2012 and after 18 years since the Norfolk Southern Railroad ended the Steam Excursion Program in 1994, steam returned to Birmingham with the arrival of the Southern 630.
