NEW: Internal CBP data provided & confirmed by CBP sources reveals thousands of “special interest aliens” from mostly Middle Eastern countries have been apprehended by Border Patrol while crossing into U.S. illegally over last 2 years.
Syria: 538
Yemen: 139
Iran: 659
Iraq: 123
Afghanistan: 6,386
Lebanon: 164
Egypt: 3,153
Pakistan: 1,613
Mauritania: 15,594
Uzbekistan: 13,624
Turkey: 30,830
Date range 10/1/2021 - 10/4/2023 These are Border Patrol apprehensions between ports of entry only, this data does not include CBP encounters at ports of entry.
Border Patrol sources tell me they have extreme concerns about who is coming into the country because they have little to no way of vetting people from these special interest countries. I’m told unless they have committed a crime previously in the US, or they are on some sort of federal watchlist, there’s no way to know who they are because most of their home countries don’t share data/records with the US so there is nothing to match a name to when BP agents run fingerprints.
A special interest alien is a term used by the U.S. government to refer to people coming from countries that have conditions that favor or harbor terrorism, or pose a potential national security to the U.S.

U.S. customs officials are cracking down on egg smugglers.
With egg prices soaring in the U.S. over the last year, more Americans are crossing into Mexico to buy the food item and trying to sneak cartons of raw eggs along some areas of the southern border, including California and Texas.
"We are seeing an increase in people attempting to cross eggs from Juarez to El Paso because they are significantly less expensive in Mexico than the U.S.," U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier told CBS MoneyWatch. "This is also occurring with added frequency at other Southwest border locations."
Egg prices have soared 60% in a year. Here's why.
Jennifer De La O, a  U.S. Customs and Border Protection field operations director in San Diego, said in a tweet this week that her office "has recently noticed an increase in the number of eggs intercepted at our ports." Failure to declare agricultural items while entering the U.S. can carry fines of up to $10,000, she added.
Federal law prohibits travelers from bringing certain agriculture products — including eggs, as well as live chickens and turkeys — into the U.S. "because they may carry plant pests and foreign animal diseases," according to customs rules. Eggs from Mexico have been banned from entering the U.S. since 2012, according to the USDA. Cooked eggs are allowable under USDA guidelines.
The number of incidents in which raw eggs were confiscated at U.S. borders jumped more than 100% during the final three months of 2022 compared to the same period a year ago, according to Border Report, an online news site focused on immigration issues. The price for a 30-count carton of eggs in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, is $3.40, according to Border Report.
Egg prices in the U.S. have surged to an average of $4.25 a dozen, up from roughly $1.79 a year ago, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The cost of processed eggs — used in liquid or powdered form in manufactured products including salad dressing, cake mix and chips — has also risen.
Those price increases are being driven by growing consumer demand along with a decrease in domestic egg supplies caused by an avian flu epidemic that has devastated U.S. poultry flocks.
Nearly 58 million birds have been infected with the disease, while more than 43 million egg-laying hens have been slaughtered, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, making it the deadliest avian flu outbreak in American history. USDA officials are investigating what caused the outbreak.
People entering the U.S. must declare eggs at the border, Charles Payne, supervisory agriculture specialist at U.S. Customs in El Paso, Texas, told Border Report. A customs officer will still confiscate the eggs and have them destroyed, but will waive the penalty for the offender.
"We don't want to issue the penalties, but occasionally we have to," Payner told Border Report. "So if you declare what you've got, there won't be an issue."

Ballistic Guidance
Emerging from the airlock after five hours of EVA repairs, Mickey and Hunter stow their vacuum suits, Mickey’s canid-tailored one beside Hunter’s lagomorph model. Down in By Candlelight’s common room, they find Rau unconscious, laying on their bunk with cables draped across their iridescent plumage. One cable is routed to the back of Rau’s head, where their neural port is situated between their four ears. Resting in one of their tridactyl hands is a partially-eaten turkey sandwich.
On the floor beside Rau’s bunk is a salvaged missile, its nose cone dented from impact with Mickey’s fighter. At least a dozen cables lead into the partially-disassembled casing, through the cavity where some Solar Neutrality technician failed to install a tactical nuke, and down into the guidance computer. The entire setup leads back to an open maintenance panel, routed straight into Candlelight’s main computer.
Hunter grins. “Ain’t usually this messy. Little guy must be excited.”
Mickey’s eyes narrow as she examines the mess of cabling. “This is military liveware,” she says. “They shouldn’t have it talking to the ship.”
“Eh. Give ‘em a little credit. Probably more processing power crammed into their brain than the whole damn ship,” says Hunter, fishing for an unused cable and reaching for his own neural port. He sits by Rau’s bunk, crossing his legs, and holds a cable out to Mickey. “You coming or not?”
“Yeah. I’m coming,” she says. Taking a seat across from him, Mickey takes the jack between her claws and reaches to pull her collar down, feeling across the speckled tan fur at the nape of her neck for her port. She jacks in.
Slipping away into softspace, she finds herself hovering beside Hunter, suspended over a line of battleships. Behind them is the enormous curvature of a planet, its surface blurry and undefined to save processing power. Dozens of fighter squadrons streak through orbit all around them, maneuvering jets firing across their hulls as they weave between cruisers. The entire fleet is pointed outward in defense formation. At the center of it all, just ahead of Mickey and Hunter, is Rau. Their plumage bristles as they peer into space.
“What the hell, Rau? You trying to melt the processor?” Mickey calls out, willing herself to fly towards them. “How long have you been—”
“Quiet!” Rau says, glancing back. “It’s coming.”
For a moment, Mickey falls silent, her lips pulling back off her fangs. “You’re running simulator drills against this thing? We could've used some help with the hull repair—”
“There,” Rau shouts, pointing to an orange spark in the distance. All at once, the fighter squadrons pull into multi-g turns and converge on their target. One after the other, the capital ships discharge their primary railguns, electric arcs leaping between paired magnetic tines. Positional data is fed to Mickey’s nervous system as proprioceptive input so she can feel the kinetic munitions sailing out into space, swerving toward their target under power of their miniaturized thrusters. A sea of blue sparks ignite as the fighters fire their own railguns in unison, creating a wall of guided thumbtacks between the planet and their target. Soon, there’s so much tungsten flying that the proprioceptive feed feels like meaningless static.
“Just watch,” Rau says, transmitting command impulses to the simulated officers and pilots of the fleet. “I’ve been escalating all afternoon, throwing larger and more sophisticated forces at it.”
“Yeah, for what purpose?”
“Just watch, Mick.”
She shakes her head, pulling up a HUD to highlight the details of the battle. Rolling back to sit cross-legged, she glances over to see Hunter pull up beside Rau, lounging with his hands behind his head.
Under Mickey’s HUD scope, the orange spark resolves itself into a long missile with twelve interception lasers along its body, driven by a pair of rotating omnidirectional thruster rings. Squatting on its nose is a demon of neon light, all claws and teeth, with a mane of glass razors pouring over its shoulders. Hunter clicks his tongue, and Mickey feels her lips come apart. “That’s—”
All at once, the missile’s interception lasers begin spitting red needles into the cloud of thumbtacks. Each tack vaporized is replaced by two more, the fighters dropping acceleration to invest power towards cycling their guns.
A pulse of thrust pivots the missile hard, pointing it into the center of the cloud. Then, its thrusters swivel back to drive it into a dizzying burn down the planet’s gravity well. Bursts of precise thrust carry it in jagged lines, lasers intercepting tacks seemingly at random while the missile evades others by a hair’s breadth. One tack comes within a hundred meters, and Mickey’s eyes go wide as a millisecond pulse from a maneuvering jet swings the missile’s tail neatly out of the way. Her HUD lists the tack’s closest distance to target as two meters. The demon, eyes darting between tacks as it directs its laser fire, stops to look at Mickey for a moment. Its face splits into a jagged smile.
“It’s a Vargheist. Pared down, simplified to fit on a compact platform, but there’s no mistaking it,” Rau says, hands flying between interface panels as the missile approaches. “I haven’t been able to stop it. Not once.”
“So what?” Mickey says, trying to keep her voice steady. “It can fly like this in theory. Real combat is always more complicated.”
“Shit, simulation or not, I’ve never seen anyone fly like that. Spirit or organic,” Hunter says. Something about the respect in his voice makes Mickey uneasy.
The Vargheist streaks through the fleet under thirty gees of acceleration, faster than the cruisers’ railgun turrets can swivel to track it. An instant later, an antimatter blast blooms through the planet’s atmosphere, light so intense that Rau halts the simulation and brings up filters to keep the input safe. Rau yelps as the demon flickers into existence centimeters from their face, and Mickey makes an involuntary motion for the sidearm on her belt back in hardspace.
“I win,” it says.
_________
Around 1000 words, had to trim this one down some! Done for @flashfictionfridayofficial's prompt, "Against the Flow." Tried to do a (sort of) standalone piece for the prompt based off a longer sci-fi story I'm messing around with, titled Vargheist. Anthro cast for fun, riffing on Star Fox a bit.
Mickey, Hunter, and Rau are a trio of freelance freighter-escort pilots working at the edge of the solar system. They have stumbled into very, very deep waters.

ISTANBUL—Since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has provided a lifeline of people and money for Turkey—and received plenty of benefits in return.
Over the past year, Russians have flooded into Turkey in droves. Many are buying up property, whereas others came to escape conscription into the army, bank their savings outside Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sanctioned economy, or open businesses; last year alone, Russians opened 1,363 new companies in Turkey. At immigration offices throughout Turkey’s biggest cities, it’s now mostly Russians applying for residence permits, and more than 155,000 of them have been granted, according to Turkish government data.
Turkey and its economy have mostly welcomed the newcomers and their cash. To an extent, they have—at least temporarily—changed the faces of Turkish cities, such as Istanbul or Antalya. Rent has shot up, but natural gas prices have remained low; coffee shops are crowded with Russian visitors; and even the occasional billboard is now in Cyrillic.
For Turkey, maintaining and even deepening relations with Russia while also maintaining its place as one of NATO’s biggest members is a tricky but much-needed balancing act. Turkey is squeezed between Iran and the West, has a land border with Syria, controls the Black Sea’s only access to the ocean, and has a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia. Since the war began, Turkey has managed to prop up both the Ukrainian military effort and Russia’s war-battered economy.
On its northern shores, Turkey has supplied Ukraine with drones—used to great effect against Russian forces—and helped negotiate a deal that allows Ukrainian grain to be shipped out of Black Sea ports. At the same time, Turkey has stepped up its purchases of Russian gas and oil and partially helped shield Moscow from punishing sanctions.
For Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, it’s a devil’s bargain born of his own geopolitical, political, and economic needs. Erdogan faces perhaps his most challenging election in May, and Russian support might just help carry him through.
“Russia and Turkey: That’s a marriage of convenience,” said Alper Coskun, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. It certainly isn’t an easy marriage.
In 2015, relations between the two nations soured when Turkey shot down a Russian jet that violated its airspace in southeastern Turkey on the Syrian border. In June 2016, Erdogan apologized and signaled readiness to restore ties. A month later, Russia offered help to Erdogan after a failed coup attempt in Turkey.
To Turkey, Russia offers an opportunity, but it also poses a threat. An aggressive Russia controlling Ukrainian coastal cities certainly isn’t in Turkey’s interest, but neither is the rise of a Kurdish statelet in northern Syria. Since 2014, the United States has supported Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, whereas Turkey claims the Kurdish militias have deep ties with the militant-political Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a designated terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. Russia has been on the other end in Syria, supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkey’s support to Ukraine is not a game-changer in the war though, said independent Moscow-based Russia expert Kerim Has. “Military aid is certainly there, and it shouldn’t be underestimated, but it’s not crossing Moscow’s red lines. Turkey is not sending tanks or fighter jets. It’s at a tolerable level for the Kremlin.”
Economically, especially since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has propped up Turkey’s economy with huge inflows of capital, even turning a blind eye to Ankara’s limited military support for Kyiv. The two countries are currently negotiating a potential gas discount, and Turkey has asked Russia to postpone gas payments until 2024, offering at least temporary economic relief.
It’s still a two-way street. For the isolated and sanctioned Kremlin, Turkey has become a financial safe haven. Last year, trade between the two countries amounted to an estimated $70 billion, with Turkey one of Russia’s biggest trading partners. At the same time, hundreds of Western companies are looking at circumventing sanctions by opening up offices in Turkey to continue trade with Russia, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reported.
Ahead of Turkey’s May 14 elections, Putin’s moves to empower Erdogan are his best bet.
“Putin doesn’t really have any other choice, so it’s a pragmatic approach,” Has said. “While Erdogan isn’t always a reliable partner for Moscow, Putin doesn’t have a better alternative to work with in Turkey and beyond: All other alternatives are more pro-Western leaders.”
For Turkey, pragmatism rules too. Geographically and militarily, Turkey places itself with the Western block and has been a vital ally for the West, but economically, Turkey has no other option but to work with Russia. “If Russia cuts gas to Turkey, it would be a disaster,” Has said. “Likewise, if the Turkish economy collapses, European banks will also suffer with the number of loans Turkey has taken from them.”
Still, like all marriages—of convenience or otherwise—there is plenty of history and potential friction on the horizon. Erdogan recognizes Russia as a reality in the Black Sea region, especially with the United States largely absent economically and militarily. “Erdogan has adapted to this: the U.S.’s shifting focus away from the Black Sea region,” said Muhammet Kocak, an Ankara-based independent foreign affairs analyst.
Still, historic animosities and long-term rivalry could return to trump today’s immediate economic and political symbiosis, he said.
“Due to its partnership with Russia, Turkey has addressed its immediate, mostly Syria-related security issues but, at the same time, values its NATO membership and security alliance with the West,” Kocak added. “In the long run, Russia remains a historic competitor and threat to Turkey’s security. These dynamics likely outweigh the economic advantages.”

Ukraine’s sunflower oil exports up in 2023/24 season so far with Black Sea grain corridor help Ukraine increased sunflower oil shipments in the 2023/24 season running from October to September after the Black Sea grain corridor was set in force, inspiring the exporting companies to extend exports through the Odesa region ports and use their well-developed infrastructure. Ukraine shipped about 2.7 million tonnes of sunflower oil from its sea ports during the October 2023-February 2024 period, almost 30% up from 2.1 million tonnes during the same period last season, according to Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry data, when a year lasting the U.N. and Turkey-backed Black Sea grain initiative was in force. The average shipments jumped to around 570,000 tonnes of sunflower oil per month between November 2023 and February 2024 period from around 420,000 tonnes during the same period last year, thanks to the use of modern facilities located in the Black Sea deep-water ports. Ukraine mostly exported sunflower oil from its Danube ports by small ships, carrying around 6,000-7,000 tonnes after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February 2022. Shipments from Ukraine by big ships, carrying up to 40,000-45,000 tonnes of sunflower oil were complicated and limited because ships waiting for the inspections for over one month near the Turkey coasts, despite the Black Sea grain agreement between, brokered by the U.N. and Turkey, operated between August 2022 and July 2023. Sunflower oil deliveries towards the crossing borders in the western part of Ukraine were slow and complicated. Concerns of many-day delays in deliveries because of the farmer protests across the European countries during the recent months also prompted the Ukraine-based crushing plants to shift sending their ships from the ‘Big Odesa’ ports to the E.U. and Middle East-based consumers. “The existing port capacities are larger compared to the landline routes,” one Kyiv-based trader said. The crushing plants and the exporting companies were not willing to share any information or details on their ships heading to the Ukrainian ports or sailing out as well as cargoes intended to be shipped to keep the ship and the port workers safe as much as possible. The southern regions of Ukraine and the sea ports of the Odesa region have been the targets for Russian missile and drone strikes. After the latest deadliest Russian attack on Odesa city on March 15, the residents faced power outages as well as gas and water cut off, with over 15 people killed and around 70 people injured while the port terminals operations were disrupted, and grain shipments slowed down. The alternative export route from the war-hit Ukraine, the ‘Black Sea export corridor’, emerged in September 2023 after Russia pulled out of the U.N. and Turkey backed agreement called ‘Black Sea grain deal’ promoting free and safe agriculture exports from Ukraine in mid-July 2023. Ukrainian farm exports reached 7.3 million tonnes in February 2024touching , the highest volume shipped in March 2023 (7.4 million tonnes) under the ‘Black Sea grain deal’, Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry data showed.

Kyiv's ambassador to Ankara has accused Turkey of buying grain that Russia had stolen from Ukraine during the war.
The comments by Vasyl Bodnar on Friday come after Moscow announced that Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, would soon visit Turkey, which is a member of NATO.
Bodnar said that he had asked Turkish authorities and Interpol for information about the shipments, according to Reuters. Newsweek has contacted the Turkish and Russian foreign ministries for comment.
Meanwhile, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced on Friday that Lavrov would meet his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on June 8 in Ankara to discuss "primarily the situation in Ukraine" as well as "prospects for stepping up bilateral cooperation."
Turkey is a key player in the Ukraine war. President Tayyip Erdogan has criticized Russia's invasion and has supplied Kyiv with unmanned Bayraktar TB2 combat drones and other weapons.
However, he also opposes the NATO aspirations of Finland and Sweden, whose membership requires the backing of all the alliance members.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of stealing large quantities of grain since the start of President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion, which entered its 100th day on Friday.
This week, Ukraine's first deputy minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Taras Vysotskyi, said that Russia had stolen almost half a million tonnes of grain that had been illegally exported from the country.
He said there was evidence that the grain had been taken from "all the temporarily occupied regions," including Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kharkiv. The grain was shipped either to Russia via the east of Ukraine, or through Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014, he said, according to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrinform.
Vysotskyi said Russia has unsuccessfully tried to sell the stolen grain in Egypt and Lebanon and expressed concerns that Moscow would try to seize Ukraine's upcoming harvest of winter crops.
Last month, CNN reported that the Russian merchant ship Matros Pozynich loaded with grain stolen in Ukraine had arrived in the Syrian port of Latakia after being turned away from at least one Mediterranean port.
CNN said that satellite images and tracking data showed the vessel had left the port of Sevastopol and gone to the Egyptian port of Alexandria via the Bosphorus, before the shipment was turned away.
It comes amid a Russian blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports which has raised fears that millions of tonnes of grain will remain stranded, sparking a global hunger crisis.
Ukraine's foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said on Thursday that Kyiv was working to create a United Nations-backed mission to restore Black Sea shipping routes.
