"When the King delayed over paying her jointure, Mary, quite reasonably, expected her father to back her up, since it was in the dynasty's interest that her status as a royal widow should be recognized. Yet six months later matters were no further forward, and Mary blamed her father for this. In a letter to him written in January 1537, she wrote that all she had received thus far from her father's suit was 'no effect but wordes.' She asked, as she had 'oftymes' asked before, that her father would 'grante me lewe to com up and sue myne owne caus...[I] do not dowt bewt wrapon the rygthe ther of hes hyeghns shuld be mowed to have compasyon on me.' In short, she did not believe her father had done his best for her, and she thought she would be more successful on her own, though she was careful to couch her letter in traditionally dutiful terms... Norfolk, indeed, was indignant, and wrote to Cromwell that 'in all my lif I never comoned w[ith] her in any seriouse cause or nowe, and wold not haue thought she had be suche as I fynde her, wich as I think is but to wise for a woman.'"

How did Elizabeth I managed to not get pregnant while having lovers?
Hi anon
It is quite possible she remained a virgin. We have no proof she didn’t remain “the virgin queen” as she was later nick named. Artistic license has been taken in many modern media portrayals of Elizabeth I and some depict her as having full on sexuql relations. But there is no proof she ever did because as you’ve pointed out the risk of pregnancy could have caused her to lose her throne.

For a man with six wives in Tudor England, I'm surprised King Henry VIII never married a woman named Mary or Elizabeth. And yes, I know those were his daughters' names, but hear me out.
There were 3 Katherines (which makes me think John Green took some inspiration from him to write An Abundance of Katherines), two Annes (admittedly, Ine was technically an Anna) and one Jane, but not a single Mary or Elizabeth in the era where pretty much every woman was either named Mary or Elizabeth.
Instead, for Mary he had a sister (Queen of France), a mistress (Boleyn) and a daughter (Queen of England), and Elizabeth came to be the name of his grandmother (Woodville), mother (York), deceased sister (Tudor, 1492-95), mother in law (Boleyn, nee Howard) and second daughter (Queen of England).
But he never married a Mary or an Elizabeth. Maybe it was weird in his brain to bed someone with such a familiar name? Who knows.

The very first comic book I remember reading was on Elizabeth I, actually; I remember sitting in my living room reading about a young woman in a barge, being taken to a tower from which she could not be certain she would leave. She wore a green dress. Her mother had been imprisoned there, too, and Elizabeth was her daughter- she had just as much dignity as Anne Boleyn, despite being so very young. I’ve forgotten everything else about that book, but by god did I love it then.
