Half an hour to today’s rehearsal. The students are excited about the performance, which the entire afters-school program will come to watch. I’m worried about the Giant, which some visitor to the office broke. Time to play doctor to a stick puppet. The students, who are in the autism spectrum, worked hard on these puppets. For my storytelling class, creating a brave space for the children who are coping with trauma. Making marionettes will enable the students to put a little distance between themselves and harm, to find ways to share their stories (or not, as they choose) without adding new pains to old, and to develop creative ways to heal. Thanks to @traderJoes for the apple divider that became the “hen with the golden eggs” puppet for a production of Jack and the Beanstalk by a small group of students on the autism spectrum. I cut it out. The kids made the feathers. The girls did the pasting and decorating. The hen will pop up, revealing eggs: one, two, three! The bit behind it is part of the castle, which the boys painted. Trader Joe also donated the cylinders from their produce bags.
