“Chicken Thieves Were Too Noisy,” Toronto Star. February 2, 1932. Page 18. ---- Chased From Trafalgar Farm - Escape in Truck ---- Oakville, Feb. 2. - When the noise they made aroused owners, three chicken thieves, equipped with a truck, were prevented from making a haul from among the 1,200 chickens at the farm of Wilson Bros., ninth line, Trafalgar township, at 9 o’clock last night.
James Wilson, part owner of the farm, saw the three men hurry from the chicken pens as he ran out to find the cause of the disturbance. The three got into a truck and started towards Oakville, where an attempt to head them off was made by Chief David Kerr.

Tooth and Claw

Rose and I walk out of the wardrobe and make our way to the console room.
She does a drumroll, “Introducing; Abby.”
I walk out of the hallway and Rose cheers.
I brush my hair out my face and stare at the Doctor, waiting for a reaction.
“You look lovely!” He grins.
I smile, pulling Rose toward him.
He puts a cd in the player and ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ by Ian Dury and the Blockheads blares out, “Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Number One in 1979.”
“You’re a Punk!” Rose laughs.
The Doctor sings along, “It’s good to be a lunatic…”
“That’s what you are. A big old Punk with a bit Rockabilly thrown in.” I laugh.
“Would you like to see him?” He asks.
“In concert?” Rose asks.
“What else is the Tardis for?” He asks.
We all do a little dance around the console.
“I can take you to the Battle of Trafalgar… the first anti-gravity Olympics… Caesar crossing the Rubicon… or… Ian Dury at the Top Rank, Sheffield, England, Earth, 21st November 1979. What do you think?”
Rose and I share a look, “Sheffield it is!”
“Hold on tight.” He pulls a lever and we all lurch forward.
He whacks the console with a hammer to the beat of the music, shouting.
“Stop!”
The movement stops and we all fall to the floor, laughing our heads off.
The Doctor stands up, “1979. Hell of a year!” He pulls me up.
Rose gets up and we all bound toward the door.
He grabs his jacket, “China invades Vietnam… The Muppet Movie! Love that film. Margaret Thatcher… urgh… Skylab falls to Earth… with a little help from me… nearly took off my thumb.”
We step out the doors, and are faced with Scottish soldiers holding guns in our face.
We all put our hands up.
The Doctor seems to realize what year it actually is, “1879. Same difference.”
“You will explain your presence. And the nakedness of this girl.”
Rose looks down at herself.
The Doctor puts on a Scottish accent, “Are we in Scotland?”
“How can you be ignorant of that?”
“Oh, I’m… I’m dazed and confused, as I often am around my wife.” He pulls me closer, wrapping an arm around my waist, “We’ve been chasing this… this wee naked child over hill and over dale. In’t that right, ya… timorous beastie?”
Rose does a horrible Scottish accent, “Ooch, aye! I’ve been oot and aboot.”
I stare at her, “Don’t fucking do that.”
She stops immediately.
“Will you identify yourself, sir?” The guard asks.
“I’m Doctor James McCrimmon. From the… Township of Balamory. Eh… I have my credentials, if I may…” The Doctor gestures to his pocket and the guard nods.
We all lower our hands whilst he fumbles in his pocket and produces the psychic paper.
He shows it to them, “As you can see, a Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. I trained under Doctor Bell himself.”
A woman’s voice comes from the carriage, “Let them approach.”
The guard clears his throat, “I don’t think that’s wise, ma’am.”
“Let them approach.”
He nods, before stepping aside, warning as we begin approaching the carriage, “You will approach the carriage. And show all due deference.”
I lower my head, the Doctor does an ‘aye aye’ signal, pulling me behind him, fingers weaved through my own.
I grab onto Rose’s hand, pulling her along with us.
The footman descends to open the carriage door, revealing Queen Victoria.
I curtsy slightly, at the sight, lowering my head politely.
The Doctor introduces her, “Abby, Rose… might I introduce her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Empress of India and Defender of the Faith.”
“It’s an honor, Your Majesty.” I say, lilting my voice with an English accent, meeting the Queen’s eyes, “Abigail McCrimmon.”
She gives me a gentle smile, nodding for me to rise, and her eyes turn to Rose, who quickly stutters.
“Rose Tyler, Ma’am. And my apologies… for being so naked.”
Victoria regally shrugs her shoulders, “I’ve had five daughters. It’s nothing to me.” She turns to the Doctor, “But you, Doctor… show me these credentials.”
He hands her the paper, and she glances down at it quickly, before gasping, “Why didn’t you say so immediately? It states clearly here that you have been appointed by the Lord Provost as my Protector.”
I groan quietly, “Of fucking course it does.”
“Yes, it does! Good! Good! Um… then let me ask… Why is Your Majesty traveling by road when there’s a train all the way to Aberdeen?”
“A tree on the line.”
I tilt my head in thought, “Assassination attempt?”
She smiles at me softly, “You are clever.”
“Seriously?” Rose gasps in shock, “There’s people out to kill ya?”
Queen Victoria nods at her seriously, “I’m quite used to staring down the barrel of a gun.”
The guard comes back behind us, riding astride his horse, “Sir Robert MacLeish lives but ten miles hence. We’ll send word ahead, he’ll shelter us for tonight, then we can reach Balmoral tomorrow.”
“This Doctor, his wife, and their… timorous beastie will come with us.” The Queen informs him.
He nods, “Yes, Ma’am. We’d better get moving, it’s almost nightfall.”
“Indeed. And there are stories of wolves in these parts. Fanciful tales intended to scare the children. But good for the blood, I think. Drive on!”
The three of us move behind the carriage, walking along the route set for us.
Rose shakes her head, smiling in wonder, “It’s funny though, ‘cos you say ‘assassination’ and you just think of Kennedy and stuff. Not her.”
“1879… she’s had… oo… six attempts on her life? And I’ll tell you something else: we just met Queen Victoria!”
“I know!” Rose giggles.
I smile, “She’s more regal than I thought she’d be.”
“What a laugh!”
“I want her to say,” Rose puts on an upper-class accent, “‘We are not amused’. I bet you five quid I can make her say it.”
“Well, if I gambled on that, it’d be an abuse of my privileges of traveler in time.”
“Ten quid?”
“Done.”
One of the footmen opens the door of the carriage and helps Queen Victoria down. A man who I assume is Sir Robert emerges from a doorway and approaches her, a bald man behind him.
The Doctor’s hand leaves mine, to wrap around my waist, pulling me closer to his chest.
“Your Majesty.” He bows.
She nods, allowing him to rise once more, “Sir Robert. My apologies for the emergency. And how is Lady Isobel?”
“She’s… indisposed, I’m afraid. She’s gone to Edinburgh for the season. And she’s taken the cook with her, the kitchens are barely stocked… I wouldn’t blame Your Majesty if you wanted to ride on.”
The Doctor pulls me closer, lips grazing the shell of my ear as he whispers, “He doesn’t seem all that happy to have the queen here, does he?”
I gasp softly, shudders going down my spine at the feeling, “No… no, he doesn’t.”
He meets my eyes, “You okay?”
I nod, staring at him, a blush rising to my cheeks.
The Queen’s cheerful voice draws my attention back to her, “Oh, not at all! I’ve had quite enough carriage exercise. And this… is charming. If rustic. It’s my first visit to this house. My late husband spoke of it often. The Torchwood Estate. Now, shall we go inside?” Glancing back at Rose she adds, “And please excuse the naked girl.”
Rose mutters a bashful apology.
The Doctor pulls me closer to his side, hand fully grasping my waist, chuckling in amusement, “She’s a feral child. I bought her for sixpence in old London Town. it was her or the Elephant Man, and my darling Abigail refused to leave her behind.”
I roll my eyes.
Rose glances at the Queen and smiles, “Thinks he’s funny but I’m so not amused. What do you think, Ma’am?”
The Queen stares her down, before sniffling delicately, “It hardly matters. Shall we proceed?”
Sir Robert nods and they begin to make their way into the house.
Rose huffs, “So close.”
The Doctor notices the guards carrying a small box, “What’s in there, then?”
“Property of the Crown. You will dismiss any further thoughts, sir.”
The Doctor pulls a face to us.
Sir Robert leads us to the top of the Manor, ushering us into the observatory.
Our group consists of the Queen, Rose, the Doctor, me and three of the suspicious-looking bald staff members.
I set my eyes on the enormous telescope stationed in the middle of the room, lips curving into a smile at the sight of the beautiful machine.
Queen Victoria gestures towards it softly, “This, I take it, is the famous Endeavor.”
“All my father’s work.” Robert smiles wistfully, “Built by hand in his final years. Became something of an obsession… he spent his money on this rather than caring for the house or himself.”
The Doctor grins, “I wish I’d met him, I like him. That thing’s beautiful. Can I um…?”
“Help yourself.” The man nods.
The three of us time travelers move toward the machine.
I look at the detailed engravings, “Do you happen to know what it was he modeled it on?”
Robert shakes his head sadly, “I know nothing about it. To be honest, most of us thought him a little… shall we say, eccentric. I wish now I’d spent more time with him. And listened to his stories.”
I chuckle softly, nodding, “Yes, I rather know the type.” my eyes move to the Doctor, finding him already looking at me.
He laughs happily, wrapping both hands around my waist and pulling my body toward him, leaning down to smile smugly, “Love, there’s no point denying you like it.”
I tilt my head, bite my lip teasingly, before rising on my tiptoes, nose grazing his slightly, and whispering, “Never said I didn’t honey.”
His eyes widen, and I step away, winking at him, moving to Rose’s side, and hooking our elbows together.
He clears his throat before turning back to the telescope, “It’s a bit rubbish.”
I make eye contact with Rose and roll my eyes as he continues with his rudeness.
“How many prisms has it got? Way too many. The magnification’s gone right over the top, that’s stupid kind of a…” He notices the look I’m giving him, as well as the grin on Rose’s face, “Am I being rude?”
We both nod, “Yeah.”
He quickly adds, “But it’s pretty! It’s very… pretty.”
I smile softly, walking over and wrapping my arm around his waist, looking at Robert and the Queen apologetically, “Please forgive my husband, your majesty. He has a tendency to get lost within his own mind and not pay attention to what comes out of his mouth.”
The Queen nods, smiling softly, “At any rate, the imagination of it should be applauded.”
Rose furrows her brows slightly, “Mm. thought you might disapprove, Your Majesty. Stargazing. Isn’t that a bit fanciful? You could easily… not be amused, or something…? No?”
Queen Victoria stares at her, “This device surveys the infinite work of God. what could be finer? Sir Robert’s father was an example to us all. A polymath. Steeped in astronomy and sciences, yet equally well versed in folklore and fairytales.”
“Stars and magic.” The Doctor murmurs, looking down at me and winking, “Reminds me of someone else. I like him more and more.”
I giggle, whispering, “Sounds more like you. I’m not all that magical.”
“Not to me.” He speaks softly.
I lean up on my tiptoes and press a kiss to his cheek, “For what it’s worth, you’re the height of magic and stardust to me too.”
“Oh, my late husband enjoyed his company. Prince Albert himself was acquainted with many rural superstitions, coming as he did from Saxe Coburg.”
The Doctor whispers to us, “That’s Bavaria.”
Turning to Sir Robert, Victoria continues, “When Albert was told about your local wolf, he was transported.”
“So, what’s this wolf then?” The Doctor pulls me back into his side.
Sir Robert seems visibly uncomfortable and frightened, shooting a worried look at one of the bald servants in the room, before stuttering, “It’s just a story.”
“Then tell it.”
“It’s said that…” He begins slowly, only for one of the bald men to cut him off, “Excuse me, sir. Perhaps her Majesty’s party could retire to their rooms. It’s almost dark.”
Robert nods immediately, “Of course. Yes, of course.”
The Queen nods along, “And then supper. And… could we find some clothes for Miss Tyler? I’m tired of nakedness.”
Rose glances at her hopefully, “It’s not amusing, is it?”
The monarch ignores her, looking, and Robert instead, “Sir Robert, your wife must’ve left some clothes. See to it. We shall dine at seven. And talk some more of this wolf. After all… there is a full moon tonight.”
“So there is, Ma’am.” He swallows heavily.
I throw myself onto the bed in the room given to me and the Doctor as soon as I see it.
He looks down at me and grins, plopping down beside me, hands combing through my hair, “Where’d you learn to do that accent?”
I look at him gobsmacked and hit him with a pillow, “You’re asking me, the woman who has lived in England for one year, along with an English Passport, and two grandmothers from the United Kingdom, where I learned the accent from?”
“Okay, stupid question obviously.” He hits me back.
We both laugh.
I smile at him, butterflies in my chest at the pure happiness on his face.
“What?” He asks.
“Nothing.” I whisper, shaking my head, a secretive smile on my face.
He pulls himself closer to me and leans in, “What is it?”
“Nothing!” I giggle, trying to move away, only to find myself on my back, the Doctor’s hands beside my head, caging my body between him and the bed.
I bite my lip as he leans down, nose brushing over mine softly, “Why were you smiling, Abigail Greenwood?”
“You make me happy.” I murmur softly.
He places his forehead against mine, “You make me happy too.”
We get called to the dining room moments later. I silently thank the stars for the interruption because if he had kissed me at that moment, I wouldn’t have been able to stop.
One of the servants enters the room, glancing at us quietly, “Your companion begs an apology, Doctor and Mrs. McCrimmon. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her.”
“Oh, that’s all right. Save her a wee bit of ham.” The Doctor jokes easily.
Victoria chuckles lightly, “The feral child could probably eat it raw.”
“Very wise, ma’am! Very witty!” The Captain laughs loudly, quieting when we all stare at him.
The Queen nods quietly, “Slightly witty, perhaps. I know you rarely get the chance to dine with me, Captain, but don’t get too excited… I shall contain my wit in case I do you further injury.”
He apologizes, “Yes, Ma’am. Sorry, Ma’am.”
I clear my throat, “Besides, we’re all waiting on Sir Robert, are we not?” I turn to him, “Come, Sir! You promised us a tale of nightmares.”
“Indeed. Since my husband’s death, I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction.” Victoria muses.
I give her a soft smile, “You must miss him.”
“Very much.” The Queen replies quietly, “It is a pain I hope you never experience, Mrs. McCrimmon.” Clearing her throat, she continues, “And that’s the charm of a ghost story, isn’t it? Not the scares and chills, that’s just for children, but the… hope of some contact with the great beyond. We all want some message from that place… it’s the creator’s greatest mystery that we are allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent. And we must wait.”
I reach out and hold the Doctor’s hand hoping to comfort him. He looks at me softly and lifts our hands to his mouth, pressing his lips to my hand.
“Come! Begin your tale, Sir Robert. Theres’ a chill in the air. The wind is howling through the leaves. Tell us of monsters!”
“The story goes back three hundred years.” The man begins, “Every full moon, the howling rings through the valley. The next morning, livestock is found ripped apart and… devoured.”
The Captain scoffs, “Tales like this just disguise the work of thieves. Steal a sheep and blame a wolf, simple as that.” The Queen shoots him an irritated look, and when his expression drops meekly, the monarch glances back at Sir Robert, ushering him to continue.
Inhaling slowly, he continues, “But sometimes, a child goes missing. Once in a generation, a boy will vanish from his homestead.”
The Doctor leans closer, interest gleaming, “Are there descriptions of the creature?”
“Oh yes, Doctor. Drawings and woodcarvings. And it’s not merely a wolf. It’s more than that. This is a man who becomes an animal.”
“A werewolf?” I ask.
Sir Robert shrugs, “My father didn't treat it as a story. He said it was fact. He even claimed to have communed with the beast, to ha e learned its purpose. I should’ve listened.” His eyes glance fearfully at the monk by the window, and continues in a quick whisper, “His work was hindered… he made enemies. There’s a Monastery in the Glen of Saint Catherine. The Brethren opposed my father’s investigations.”
“Perhaps they thought his work ungodly.”
“That’s what I thought. But now I wonder… what if they had a different reason for wanting the story kept quiet? What if they turned from God and worshipped the wolf?”
I stare at the monk by the window, he’s whispering something.
I nudge the Doctor, “The monk keeps whispering something.”
The Time Lord’s eyes swing to him quickly, and his grip tightens around my hand, “And what if they were with us right now?”
The monk’s chanting grows louder.
“What is the meaning of this?”
“Explain yourself, Sir Robert!” The Captain orders, gun drawn and pointed directly at Sir Robert, who simply whimpers, “I’m sorry, Your Majesty, they’ve got my wife.”
The Doctor shoots up from his seat, “Where’s Rose?”
The monk ignores us, the Doctor turns to Sir Robert, “Come on!” He pulls me out of my chair, we run out of the room, and down the corridor.
We descend the stairs to the cellar door.
I kick the spot right next to the door knob and it pops open.
Rose’s face comes into view, eyebrows raised, “Where the hell have you two been?” I slap the Doctor upside the head when I notice him staring at the creature.
“Save everyone first, you can fall in love with it later hon.”
His eyes snap to me, he nods quickly, ushering everyone out.
The creature lets out a ferocious growl, ripping the top of it’s cage off, and throwing it towards us, only narrowly missing our heads as the Doctor slams the door closed and we run off back to the observatory.
“It could be any form of light modulated species triggered by specific wavelengths. Did it say what it wanted?” The Doctor questions quickly, sonicking Rose’s handcuffs off.
The blonde shrugs softly, “The Queen, The Crown, the throne… you name it.”
“Domination then,” I roll my eyes, “Historically speaking, human beings really dislike that.”
The Doctor nods grimly, reaching over and lacing our fingers together.
When he opens his mouth to speak, a loud noise rumbles through the manor, from the cellar’s direction.
His hand separates from mine and slowly, he begins toward the door, motioning for us to stay behind him.
I shake my head, dread in the pit of my stomach, I turn to Rose, “He seems to have forgotten he can barely survive without me.”
“Be careful, please.”
I nod, hurrying over to the Doctor and slipping my hand into his, whispering when he turns to glare at me, “You’re not on your own anymore, stop acting like you are. If this thing’s dangerous, we deal with it together.”
He nods, “Fine, but stay next to me.”
“Got it.” We slowly peek around the corner, the wolf-man had managed to knock the door down, and stood in its place, arms spread wide. His gaze finds us, meeting my eyes and he gleams at me.
When his mouth twisted with an inhuman smirk, I get pulled back, the Doctor taking off in a run, his grip tight around my hand. The creature lets out a menacing growl.
We reach Rose, pulling her along, as we hide behind barricade of armed guards and men.
“Fire!” The Steward calls out, gun shots ringing out to punctuate the statement. I flinch at the noise, Rose squeezes my hand and the Doctor slips his arm around my waist when they fire again.
I shake my head at the sight, “They’re just pissing it off.” I whisper to the Doctor.
“It’s not gonna come near you, I promise. You or Rose.” He reassures quietly, eyes staring into mine, brown warming with softness.
“That’s not what I meant,” I whisper, “I don’t think all of us are gonna make it out alive.”
He nods, before calling out loudly, “All right, you men, we should retreat upstairs, come with me.”
“I’ll not retreat. The battle’s done. There’s no creature on God’s Earth that could survive such an assault.” The Steward replies, smugness leaking through his tone.
“I’m telling you, come upstairs!”
“And I’m telling you, sir, that I will sleep well tonight with that thing’s hide upon my wall.” He replies, heading back towards the creature’s last known location to check.
We all watch him, my chest filling with anxiety, “This isn’t going to end well.”
The steward’s arrogant voice fills the air, “Must’ve crawled away to die…” only to be cut off by a loud growl, and a scream, the sounds of the beast devouring him filling the gun-toting men with panic.
I whimper in fear.
The Doctor yells, “There’s nothing we can do!” He pulls me away quickly, grabbing onto Rose as well.
The three of us run to a room, followed by Sir Robert. Turning around, the Doctor quickly locks the door with his sonic, as the master of the house turns to the stairs and yells, “Your Majesty! Your Majesty!”
My eyes turn to the queen, who is hurrying down the stairs with speed, “Sir Robert! What’s happening?”
The Doctor leaves my side, checking all available exits and entrances.
“I heard such terrible noises.” Victoria continues.
“Your Majesty, we’ve got to get out. But what of Father Angelo? Is he still here?”
“Captain Reynolds disposed of him.”
“The front door’s no good,” The Doctor announces as he heads back to us, grabbing my hand, he begins pulling me towards a side door, “It’s been boarded shut. Pardon me, Your Majesty, you’ll have to leg it out of a window.”
I glance at the queen, her eyes have narrowed at him, ‘He dropped the accent.’
As the regal woman complies, head held high, we follow behind, finding ourselves in a different room.
Sir Robert lowers his head slightly, before gesturing towards the window gallantly, “Excuse my manners, Ma’am, but i shall go first, to better assist Her Majesty’s egress.”
“A noble sentiment, Sir Walter Raleigh.” She responds with a small smile.
I glare at the Doctor when he huffs impatiently, “Yeah, any chance you could hurry up?” When I elbow him in the side, he turns to me with wide eyes, “A little sympathy would be lovely right about now, dear.”
The second his mouth opens, loud gunshots are heard from the window, and Sir Robert jumps back down, eyes wide with fear.
“I reckon the money boys want us to stay inside.” The Doctor huffs.
Queen Victoria turns her eyes to him, narrowed in suspicion, “Do they know who I am?”
“Yeah, that’s why they want ya.” Rose responds, sincerity in her gaze as the monarch turns to stare at her, “The wolf’s lined you up for a… a biting.”
Victoria scoffs, “Now, stop this talk. There can’t be an actual wolf.”
But the words were no sooner out of her mouth that a loud, shudder-inducing howl rang through the manor. The group all spun around in alarm, the Doctor immediately pulling me behind him, lacing our fingers together, as we all leave the room hurriedly. Running fearfully in the hallway, we can what the wolf howling and battering against the door, the sound echoing in the cavernous house.
“What do we do?” Rose asks in a panic.
The Doctor turns to her with raised brows, “We… run!” “Is that it?!”
I huff out a small chuckle, “What Rosie, you happen to have silver bullets on you?”
“Not on me, no!”
“There we are then, we run.” The time lord stated, before turning to look at the queen, “Your Majesty, as a Doctor, I recommend a vigorous jog. Good for the health. Come on!”
He pulls me beside him, keeping me in his line of sight as I hold Rose’s hand with my other, before rushing down the corridor, and up the spiraling staircase.
“Oy! Hurry up, please!” I shout, still maintaining my accent.
Having reached the top of the stairs, we run through the corridors, the wolf hot our tails. I can hear its feral snarls, almost feel its breath on the back of my neck. Quickly glancing back, I yelp when my eyes clash its yellowed ones, it’s jaw raising in a menacing hiss when I do so... It was so nearly upon us, ready to pounce when Captain Reynolds appears holding a gun.
Immediately, I feel the hand intertwined with mine tighten its hold, pulling me roughly behind a pillar, shielding me, and the rest of the group, from the wolf’s view.
Taking place before us, the Captain raises his weapon, before shooting, the wolf very clearly staggering back down the corridor, wounded. Giving himself a second, the man then hurried to our spot, panting heavily.
“I’ll take this position and hold it. You keep moving, for God’s sake!” Turning to the queen, he continues, “Your Majesty, I went to look for the property, it was taken. The chest was empty.” The woman nodded somberly, “I have it. It’s safe.”
“Then remove yourself, Ma’am. Doctor, you stand as Her Majesty’s Protector. And you, Sir Robert, you’re a traitor to the crown.” He finishes, glancing at each man respectively.
I shake my head, “Bullets can’t stop it, Captain! You’ll be fighting for your life! Just come with us!”
The man shoots me a smile, before shaking his head, “Bullets may not kill it, but they will surely slow it down. I’ve made my peace with death, Mrs. McCrimmon.”
The Doctor pulls me away, back towards safety.
I can hear the loud wolf’s growls, and as everyone enters the library, I stop, turning to look back at the brave man.
He stands before the wolf, shooting at it valiantly as it bounds down the corridor towards him, but alas, before he could react, the creature pounces on him, growling viciously, its jaws clamping on the man, it’s teeth making quick work of ripping him apart.
I hold back a sob, tears beading in my eyes, desperation welling in my chest. Just as a single drop fell down my cheek, I hear my name being yelled in a panic, and the Doctor’s hands grab my waist, pulling me into the library, the heavy wooden doors slamming shut.
I stand still in the middle of the room, petrified, the Captain's cries of pain still ringing in my ears, as both Rose and Robert hurry to help the Doctor barricade the room.
Wiping my face quickly, I notice the queen trembling in the corner and go to her, whispering softly when I get closer, “I’m so sorry, Your Majesty. He was… he was a brave man, and he died displaying every ounce of that bravery.”
The monarch turns to me, and nods slowly, “He was. One of the best, truly.” she reaches into her pocket, retrieving a small handkerchief and handing it to me, murmuring softly, “Your empathy for his loss, a man you’ve never known, tells me much about your spirit. Now wipe your cheeks, Mrs. McCrimmon, Captain Reynolds would urge us to celebrate his bravery once we are no longer in danger.”
I nod, grabbing the white fabric gratefully, wiping the remaining traces of tears off my cheeks.
I notice the Doctor’s confused expression, I tilt my head as he whispers, “Is this the only door?”
“Yes.” Sir Robert nods, only to shake his head vigorously moments later, “No!”
The two hurry to the other door, barricading it as heavily as they did the first.
“Shh!” I urge, closing my eyes, head tilting back as I listen for the creature’s steps. Turning around, I shake my head, sighing, “What is it doing? What is it playing at?”
Rose steps up beside me, asking, “What’s stopping it?”
A warm arm wraps around my waist, and my eyes open when I feel my cheek meeting the Doctor’s shirt, his hand runs through my hair softly as he answers Rose, “Something inside this room.”
I hear Rose’s stifled chuckle, “I’ll tell you what, though…”
“What?”
“Werewolf!”
“I know!” He gasps happily.
I remove myself from his grasp, disappointed in both of them, “A man died. A brave man, one that saved our lives, died at the hands of that creature, and all you two can do is laugh. I saw a man get ripped to shreds, and heard his screams of pain. I held his hand right before as he assured me he’s accepted his fate. And yet, all the two of you can seem to remember is the excitement, not the loss, but that’s all they’re feeling.”
The two look at each other guiltily.
I sigh, shaking my head, before turning to face Robert.
“I’m sorry, Ma’am. It’s all my fault. I should’ve sent you away. I tried to suggest something was wrong, I… thought you might notice.”
Rose clears her throat, glancing at the queen with a small smile, “I’ll tell you what though, Ma’am, I bet you’re not amused now.”
I shoot her an incredulous look, as Victoria turns to Rose with a vicious glare.
“Do you think this is funny?”
“No, Ma’am, I’m sorry.”
Nodding once, the monarch continues, voice rising in fear, “What, exactly, I pray someone please, what exactly is that creature?”
“You’d call it a werewolf, but technically it’s more of a lupine wavelength haemovariform.” The Doctor explains casually, scratching his head in thought.
“And I should trust you, sir? You who change your voice so easily? What happened to your accent?”
His eyes widen, “Oh… right, sorry…”
“I’ll not have it. No, sir, not you… not that thing… none of it. This is not my world.”
I roll my eyes at his idiocy, before turning to the queen and explaining gently, “To the best of our understanding your Majesty, the creature seems to not be of this world, and wears the appearance of a werewolf.”
Noticing Victoria’s panicked expression, I continue, voice beginning to tremble, “I saw it, Ma’am. Saw what it looked like as it tore the captain to pieces, and so, I swear to you, we are not lying.”
The queen’s eyes stare into mine, as though to see if I am being dishonest. Victoria finally sighs, nodding very slowly.
I stand near one of the doors, gently running my fingers over the engraving on it, it’s of mistletoe.
I turn to Sir Robert, “Sir Robert, did your father put that there?”
The man, who’s been standing beside the Doctor, begins approaching me slowly, the alien I’ve been ignoring right beside him.
“I don’t know, I suppose…”
The Doctor approaches me quickly, hand running over the same carving, “They’re on the other door as well… a carving wouldn’t be enough… I wonder…”
As he leans down, I stare at him incredulously, he licks the door.
He turns to the room, with enthusiasm, “Viscum album, the oil of the mistletoe, it’s been worked into the wood like a varnish! How clever was your dad? I love him! Powerful stuff, mistletoe. Bursting with lectins and viscotoxins.”
“And the wolf's allergic to it?” Rose asks.
“Induced reaction. Mistletoe only works on werewolves in folktales. The monks need a way to control it.” I say.
Sir Robert shakes his head, desperation in his eyes, “Nevertheless, that creature won’t give up, Doctor, and we still don’t possess an actual weapon.”
“Oh, your father got all the brains, didn’t he?” The Doctor drones, only to flinch when I flick him in the ear, “Quit being an arse.”
He nods, “You want weapons? We’re in a library. Books! Best weapon in the world.” His arms gesture to the stocked shelves around us, as he slips his glasses on his nose, “This room’s the greatest arsenal we could have.” Picking a large stack out, he pulls a chair, grabbing my hand tenderly, pulling me into his side as he finishes, “Arm yourself.”
I sit down beside him, pulling a couple of the large tomes my way, staring at him with a rueful smile.
When he notices it, he questions softly, “What?”
“You make it very hard to stay angry at you when you’re being so cute.”
The group was all talking over one another, each person intoning what they’d read or discovered.
I roll my eyes and push a stack of books off the table, creating a loud noise, causing them all to jump in surprise.
“If you’re all done acting like children and yelling over one another, I think I’ve found something.”
The Doctor grins, walking towards me with a small grin, “What is it, then?” I gesture towards the book I have open on the table, inviting him to lean over and read, which he does, slowly leaning from behind me, planting his chin softly on my shoulder as he reads, “Look what your dad found. Something fell to Earth.”
Rose quickly approaches us, “A spaceship?”
“A shooting star,” I correct softly, skimming my fingers over the page, reading the lines out loud, “In the year of our Lord, 1540, under the reign of King James the Fifth, an almighty fire did burn in the pit.” “The Glen of Saint Catherine, just by the Monastery.” The Doctor nodded.
“But that’s over three hundred years ago. What’s it been waiting for?” Rose asks.
“Maybe only a single cell survived.” The Doctor murmurs, “Maybe it adapted and evolved through the generations, moving from human to human, using them as hosts, incubators.”
“But why does it want the throne?” Robert interjects, worry in his voice.
Rose shrugs helplessly, “That’s what it wants. It said so, the… the Empire of the Wolf.”
“Imagine it… the Victorian Age accelerated…” The Doctor starts, voice foreboding and dark.
I reach over and lace my fingers through his, knowing that it calms him down.
He exhales deeply, tightening his hold on my hand, before continuing, “Starships and missiles fueled by coal and driven by steam… leaving history devastated in it’s wake…”
From across the room, Victoria calls out to Sir Robert, beckoning him closer.
The queen starts rifling through her bag.
“Hardly the time to worry about your valuables.”
I roll my eyes at the Doctor’s remark, “Rude.”
The monarch simply levels a dry stare at him, “Thank you for your opinion. But there is nothing more valuable than this.” She pulls her hand from the bag, revealing a giant diamond.
The entire room gasps in awe, the Doctor and Rose hurrying towards it, while I stay in my seat, not impressed by a big shiny rock that was mined unethically. I’ve always preferred varieties of quartz.
“Is that the Koh-I-Noor?” Rose whispers in amazement.
The Doctor nods, though his gaze strays to me, seemingly noticing how uninterested I am with the rock, “Oh, yes… the greatest diamond in the world.”
“Given to me as the spoils of war. Perhaps its legend is now coming true. It is said that whoever owns it must surely die.” Victoria nods slowly.
I laugh lightly, “Well, that could very well be true about anything if owned for long enough, your majesty.”
The Doctor grins softly, calling me over, wrapping his arm around me when I approach.
He gently holds out his empty hand, “Can I?”
The queen hesitates, her own hand moving back slightly, as her gaze lands on me, nodding at me slowly, the diamond-bearing hand moving towards me with certainty.
I gently accept the diamond, holding it carefully, not bothering to hide my surprise.
I tilt my head at the Doctor, and Victoria nods, so I place it into the Doctor’s open hand. I rest my head on his shoulder, watching him.
“Beautiful.” He murmurs.
“How much is that worth?” Rose asks.
“They say… the wages of the entire planet for a whole week.”
“Good job my mum’s not here. She’d be fighting the wolf off with her bare hands for that thing.”
“And she’d win.”
I roll my eyes at them laughing in the face of tragedy again, though I do have to agree Jackie would beat the werewolf's ass.
“Where is the wolf? I don’t trust this silence.” I hear Sir Robert mutter worriedly.
“Why do you travel with it?” The Doctor questions.
“My annual pilgrimage. I’m taking it to Helier and Carew. The Royal Jewellers at Hazelhead. The stone needs recutting.”
Rose gasps, “Oh, but it’s perfect.”
“My late husband never thought so.”
The Doctor slips his glasses off, “Now there’s a fact. Prince Albert kept on having the Koh-I-Noor cut-down. It used to be forty percent bigger than this but he was never happy. Kept on cutting and cutting.”
“He always said… the shine was not quite right. But he died with it still unfinished.”
“Unfinished…” He murmurs before a small smile crosses his face, “Oh, yes!”
He tosses the Kor-I-Noor back to Queen Victoria, who catches it.
“There’s a lot of unfinished business in this house. His father’s research, your husband, Ma’am, he came here and he sought the perfect diamond, hold on, hold on…” He ruffles his hair violently in his eagerness to work it out, “All of these things, they’re not separate at all, they’re connected! Oh, my head, my head! What if, this house, it’s a trap for you, is that right ma’am?”
“Obviously.”
“At least, that’s what the wolf intended. But! What if there was a trap inside the trap?”
“Explain yourself, Doctor.”
“What if his father and your husband weren't just telling each other stories? They dared to imagine this was all true. And they planned against it. Laying a real trap, not for you… but for the wolf.”
Above our heads, pieces of plaster begin to fall to the ground, and we all look up, finding the wolf walking across the glass dome.
The Doctor starts pulling me towards the door, ushering everyone to follow us, “Out! Out! Out!”
As the werewolf crashes through, smashing the desk, we escape into the corridor.
The Doctor takes one last look at the wolf before slamming the doors closed.
“Gotta get to the observatory!”
“Bad Wolf…”
I turn to the wolf, as it continues hissing menacingly.
“How do you know that phrase?”
It smirks, “There’s something wrong with your chest.”
A debilitating pain shoots through the right side of my chest and I keel over.
I hear the wolf howl with pain, Lady Isobel holds a pan.
The Doctor’s arm wraps around my waist, pulling me towards him, “Good shot!”
“It was mistletoe!”
He nods, pulling me across the corridor. He cups my face, “What happened?”
“It said ‘Bad Wolf’, and-and then this pain shot through my chest.” I whimper, “What’s wrong with me?”
He presses his lips to my forehead, “We’ll figure it out when we get back to the Tardis. For now, do not leave my side.”
He weaves our hands together and pulls me towards the observatory.
When we finally reach the observatory, the Doctor pushes both Rose and me inside, followed by the Queen, before turning to Robert, “No mistletoe on these doors, your father wanted the wolf to get inside! Get inside I just need time! Is there any way of barricading this?!”
“Just do your work and I’ll defend it.”
“If we could bind them shut with rope or something!”
“I said I’d find you time, sir. Now get inside.”
The Doctor stares at him for a moment, “Good man.”
Sir Robert closes the doors and the Doctor runs to the Queen.
“Your Majesty, the diamond.”
“For what purpose?”
“The purpose it was designed for.”
She hands the diamond over to the Doctor. He runs over to the mechanism for the telescope.
Rose and I run over to the Doctor.
“Lift it! Come on!”
We struggle to turn the wheel, but the cogs start to shift and the telescope starts to rise.
I tear up at the screams from Robert. The wolf starts battering on the doors.
“You said this thing doesn’t work!” Rose shouts.
“It’s a light chamber!” I realize, “We’ve just got to power it up!” “But there’s no electricity!”
The Doctor grunts and turns to the light chamber.
“Moonlight! But it needs moonlight! It’s made by moonlight!”
“You’re seventy percent water but you can still drown. Come on!” I shout.
The light chamber finally starts to align with the moon.
“Come on!”
At last, it’s properly aligned. We step away from the gears as the moonlight bounces off the prisms. Just as the wolf breaks through the door, the light spews forth from the end of the light chamber onto the floor far short of the wolf.
The wolf advances on the Queen but the Doctor dives across the floor and throws the Koh-I-Noor into the beam of light. A fantastic, prismatic beam of light hits the wolf. He is lifted off the floor and hangs there, caught in the wash of moonlight. As they look on, the wolf retakes human form.
The Doctor slowly walks across to the light chamber and flicks a switch. With a final howl from the wolf, the creature vanishes and the light shuts off.
Rose and I breathe a huge sigh of relief.
The Doctor approaches the Queen, “Your Majesty? Did it bite you?”
“No, it’s… it’s a cut.”
“If that thing bit you…”
“It was a splinter of wood when the door came apart.” “Let me see.” He reaches for her hand.
She pulls her hand away sharply, “It is nothing.”
The following morning, the three of us are kneeling before the Queen, as she dutifully knights us.
“By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub thee: Sir Doctor of Tardis.” She begins with the alien, who smiles at her gratefully.
Then, her sword moves to the blonde’s shoulders, “By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub thee: Dame Rose of the Powell Estate.”
And then finally, the sword rests upon my shoulders, “By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub thee: Dame Abigail of Tardis.”
“You may stand.”
We slowly stand. I drop into a curtsy of gratitude.
“Many thanks, Ma’am.”
“Thanks! They’re never going to believe this back home.” Rose adds happily.
I raise my eyes, smiling at the queen gently, “It has been the greatest honor and pleasure, Your Majesty.”
“Your Majesty, you said last night about receiving a message from the great beyond; I think your husband cut that diamond to save your life. He’s protecting you even now Ma’am, even from beyond the grave.”
She nods solemnly, “Indeed. Then you may think on this, also: that I am not amused. Not remotely amused.”
I can hear Rose huffing proudly from beside me, and shake my head at her.
“And henceforth… I banish you. Apart from Lady Abigail.”
At this, all three of us stare at her in pure confusion.
“I’m sorry…?”
“I rewarded you, Sir Doctor. And now you and Dame Rose are exiled from this empire, never to return. I don’t know what you are, the two of you, or where you’re from, but I know that you consort with stars, and magic, and think it fun. But your world is steeped in terror and blasphemy and death and I will not allow it! Only Lady Abigail has shown empathy, whilst you two made a mockery of tragedy and pain. You will leave these shores and you will reflect, with your wife’s help I hope, on how you managed to stray so far from all that is good. And how much longer you will survive this… terrible life.” Victoria turns her gaze to me, before adding softly, “And if you ever feel the need to escape, know that you shall always be welcome at the palace, Lady Abigail.”
I nod, still slightly stunned, watching as the Queen turns to leave, commanding one last time, her back to us, “Now leave my world. And never return.”
The Doctor managed to hitch us a ride on the back of a farmer’s cart, though due to a lack of space, I’ve been set on the Doctor’s lap.
He wrapped his arms around me, his face nuzzled into the crook of my neck. Normally I hate being touched, but it’s nice with him.
Soon our driver announces we’ve arrived.
“You know, the funny thing is, Queen Victoria did actually suffer a mutation of the blood! It’s historical record hemophiliac. It used to be called the Royal Disease! But it’s always been a mystery because she didn’t inherit it. Her mum didn’t have it, her dad didn’t have it, it came from nowhere!”
“What, and you’re saying that's a wolf bite?”
I shrug, “Well, maybe hemophilia is just another victorian euphemism.”
“For werewolf?”
“Could be!” The Doctor grins, sharing an amusing look with me.
“Queen Victoria’s a werewolf?”
“Could be! And, her children had the Royal Disease. Maybe she gave them a quick nip.”
“So, the Royal Family are werewolves?”
The Doctor shakes his head slowly, “Well, it would take a single cell hundreds of years to evolve to that point. So, theoretically speaking, it would be fully mature by… early twenty-first century maybe?”
Rose’s eyes widen, loud giggles escaping her, “Nah! That’s just ridiculous! Mind you… Princess Anne!”
“I’ll say no more.” The Doctor smirks, pulling me deeper into his hold, both of us watching Rose come up with more and more theories.

Parallel: From Another World 6/34
So it's been a while since the last chapter, I haven't completed anything for my fics in about a month(?) There's been a lot going on and I've just wanted to chill and let things happen to be honest, however, I do have this chapter which I think is great. Tooth and Claw is definitely one of my favourite episodes from series 2. Enjoy! <3
Rita Stone lives in our world. The world where a big blue box bigger on the inside is simply impossible. However, this all changes after what is most definitely an impossible event. Then again nothing is impossible with the Doctor. Follow Rita through time and space, learning about herself while struggling to comprehend her new life travelling with the Doctor and his companions.

"What do you think of this? Will it do?" Rose walked over to the console spinning around a little in her denim dungarees, Rita wrinkled her nose, personally thinking that it didn't suit the blonde.
"I prefer my new grey jeans with my plaid shirt and leather jacket, not to mention my new shoes" Rita laughed pointing at the new maroon vans on her feet remembering what happened to her red ones.
"You sure like vans don't you" Rose laughed.
"Yep" Rita popped the 'p'
"You can't wear that where we're going" the Doctor chuckled at Rita.
"You wear that suit all the time" Rita exclaimed crossing her arms over her chest and sighing, leaning on the TARDIS. "Where are we going anyways?" Rita raised a brow curiosity getting the better of her.
"Somewhere where you can't wear that" Rose laughed at her own comment.
"1979" The Doctor answered the brunettes question.
"Still not changing Doctor" Rita grinned "If you can get away with that suit with them Conversers in 1979 I can get away with what I am wearing" she gave a smug look, the Doctor being defeated smirked back at her.
"Very well then. Hold on, listen to this" he commented and then popped a CD into the TARDIS which then began to play. "Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Number One in 1979." He told the pair.
"You're a punk" Rose laughed at him.
"Hey, this isn't so bad" Rita nodded her head in thought.
"It's good to be a lunatic."
"That's what you are." Rose pointed and laughed "A big old punk with a bit of rockabilly thrown in." She waved her finger up and down at him Rita shook her head and chuckled at Rose.
"Would you like to see him?" The Doctor asked Rose.
"How'd you mean?" Rose asked "In concert?"
"What else is a TARDIS for?" He began to walk around the console, Rita behind him and Rose on the opposite side. "I can take you both to the Battle of Trafalgar, the first anti-gravity Olympics, Caesar crossing the Rubicon or Ian Dury at the Top Rank, Sheffield, England, Earth, 21st November, 1979. What do you think?" He grinned at them.
"Sheffield it is." Rose caught up with them and stood on the right side of the Doctor, Rita to his left, he looked over at Rita and raised a brow.
"Sheffield it is then." She agreed the Doctor smiled smugly at them both.
"Hold on tight." He pressed buttons on the console while turning knobs and pulling levers. He then brought out a large hammer and starts to hit the TARDIS to the beat of the music.
"I don't think she likes it when you do" Rita began but then was thrown to the floor on her back along with the Doctor and Rose. "That" She blinked and then looked over at the Doctor and then Rose.
The Doctor jumped up and placed the hammer down then helped Rose and Rita to their feet who followed him to the doors of the TARDIS while picking up his coat jacket on the way. "1979. Hell of a year." He grins at the both Rita then frowns
'You mean 1879' the brunette thought to herself.
"China invades Vietnam. The Muppet Movie. Love that film. Margaret Thatcher. Urgh." The Doctor shook his head slightly shivering. "Skylab falls to Earth, with a little help from me." He winked at the two "Nearly took off my thumb." He then exited the TARDIS followed by Rose and then Rita who already had her hands halfway in the air. "And I like my thumb. I need my thumb. I'm very attached to-" He stopped talking at the sound of well over 5 rifles being cocked and pointed in the trio's direction.
"My thumb" He finished raising his hands. "1879. Same difference." Rita shook her head
"Big difference" she whispers closely watching the men who were on horses and standing pointing their guns at the three.
"You will explain your presence." The man on a black horse the closest to the three "And the nakedness of this girl as well as this ones strange clothes" The Doctor caught on and began to use a Scottish accent which honestly sounded like he was from Scotland.
"Are we in Scotland?" He asked.
"How can you be ignorant of that?" The man on the horse frowned. Rita had to cover her mouth with her hands to stop her from laughing at the Doctors accent which she noticed sounded a lot like David Tennant's natural accent.
"Oh, I'm, I'm dazed and confused." he continued the accent looking over at Rita and winking "I've been chasing this, this wee naked child over hill and over dale." He looked over at Rose "Isn't that right, ya timorous beastie?"
"Och, aye! I've been oot and aboot." Rose tried to copy the Doctor but failed, Rita couldn't hold it in any longer and let out a chuckle.
"No don't do that" he dropped the accent shaking his head, Rita then snorted trying to stop her laughter.
"Hoots mon." Rose continued Rita then laughed louder.
"No. Really don't. Really" The Doctor shook his head then turned to Rita who then stopped laughing turning all serious.
"And what is wrong with her?" The man turned to Rita although she had stopped laughing you could see that she was desperately trying to hold another laugh in.
"Oh, she was with the wee naked child, wouldn't leave without her" He made up in a Scottish accent once again.
"Will you identify yourself, sir?" The man asked the Doctor.
"I'm Doctor James McCrimmon, from the township of Balamory. I have my credentials, if I may." He reached into the inside of his coat and pulled out the psychic paper and then held it up to the man on the horse.
"As you can see, a Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. I trained under Doctor Bell himself." He took the psychic back a rather posh British female voice was then heard from the carriage.
"Let them approach" it ordered.
"I don't think that's wise, ma'am." The man on the horse recommended.
"Let them approach" she repeated.
"You will approach the carriage," He then ordered and the three walked over to the carriage following his orders. "And show all due deference." A footman then opened the door to reveal Queen Victoria.
"Rita, Rose," The Doctor beamed widely "might I introduce her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Empress of India and Defender of the Faith."
"Rose Tyler, Ma'am." Rose bowed before the Queen "And my apologies for being so naked."
"Rita Stone, Ma'am." Rita copied her friend. "apologies for.." she paused Queen Victoria raised a brow. "my strange clothes"
"I've had five daughters. It's nothing to me." She chuckled addressing them both "But you, Doctor. Show me these credentials." The Doctor then handed over the psychic paper to her, she looked over the psychic paper and frowned "Why didn't you say so immediately?" The Doctor then frowned in confusion" It states clearly here that you have been appointed by the Lord Provost as my Protector."
"Does it?" He questioned and then corrected himself "Yes, it does. Good. Good." he nodded "Then let me ask - why is Your Majesty travelling by road when there's a train all the way to Aberdeen?"
"A tree on the line" Queen Victoria replied.
"An accident?" Rita shook her head while Queen Victoria corrected Rose's guess: "I am the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Everything around me tends to be planned."
"An assassination attempt?" The Doctor raised his brows and nodded his head forward slightly.
"What, seriously? There are people out to kill you?" Rose questioned not believing what she was hearing.
"I'm quite used to staring down the barrel of a gun." She commented very seriously.
"Sir Robert MacLeish lives but ten miles hence. We've sent word ahead. He'll shelter us for tonight, then we can reach Balmoral tomorrow." The man informed the three.
"This Doctor, his timorous beastie and the girl in strange clothes will come with us." The trio smiled brightly at the Queen and nodded.
"Yes, Ma'am. We'd better get moving - it's almost nightfall." The man agreed.
"Indeed. And there are stories of wolves in these parts. Fanciful tales intended to scare the children. But good for the blood, I think. Drive on!"
The carriage then slowly began to move and the three walked behind following.
"It's funny, though because you say assassination and you just think of Kennedy and stuff." Rose thought out loud "Not her."
"1879? She's had, oh, six attempts on her life? And I'll tell you something else." He laughed "We just met Queen Victoria!"
"We did" Rita laughed.
"I know!" Rose giggled
"What a laugh!" The Doctor commented looking at the two girls beside him.
"Never thought I would meet the Queen." Rita told the too "You're impossible Doctor" Rita shook her head and smiled Rose did the same.
"Oh but you both love it really" He smirked at the two.
"She was just sitting there." Rose thought aloud again.
"Like a stamp" Rita commented.
"I want her to say we are not amused." Rose chuckled "I bet you five quid I can make her say it." She turned to Rita and then the Doctor
"Well, if I gambled on that, it'd be an abuse of my privileges of traveller in time." He said. "Plus Rita knows the future foreknowledge and all" He waved his arm in the air.
"Foreknowledge" Rita mumbled frowning.
"Like knowing something is going to happen before it does, that's foreknowledge"
"Oh" Rita nods in understanding.
"Ten quid?" Rose looked at the Doctor.
"Done" he smiled.
The three linked arms and continued to follow the carriage holding Queen Victoria in it, they joked around and told stories to each other on the way, Rita telling them both more about her life before meeting the pair.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Your Majesty." A man walked out cautiously with a bold man a frown plastered on his face behind him. Rita looks down sadly knowing what was to happen to the man and most of the people in the house later today. There was nothing Rita could do and she knew that. The Doctor noticed her looking down with a sad expression he gently squeezed her hand to comfort the girl, Rita looked up at him and gave a sad smile to try and reassure him that she was ok.
"Sir Robert." Queen Victoria exited the carriage "My apologies for the emergency. And how is Lady Isobel?" She asked unaware of what was going on inside the house.
"She's" he paused thinking of the word to use "indisposed, I'm afraid. She's gone to Edinburgh for the season." he then tried to warn her: "And she's taken the cook with her. The kitchens are barely stocked. I wouldn't blame Your Majesty if you wanted to ride on." The queen waved it off not seeing the worry behind the man's eyes.
"Oh, not at all. I've had quite enough carriage exercise. And this is charming, if rustic. It's my first visit to this house. My late husband spoke of it often." She paused "The Torchwood Estate." Rita's eyes shot up at the Queen she knew what the house was called but hearing it in person brought it to a whole new level. "Now, shall we go inside? And please excuse the naked girl and the girl in strange clothes".
"Sorry." Rose and Rita both muttered.
"She's a feral child. I bought her for sixpence in old London Town. Wouldn't leave without the girl in strange clothes." he explained to those who hadn't heard earlier. Rita quietly groaned "It's was her or the Elephant Man, so" Rita rolled her eyes in annoyance. The Doctor was clearly enjoying himself. "You wore the clothes not me" He leant in and whispered into her ear. Rita then groaned again knowing that he was right. The Doctor smirked at her finding the annoyed look on her face quite funny.
"Thinks he's funny but I'm so not amused." Rose narrowed her eyes at the Doctor playfully "What do you think, Ma'am?"
"It hardly matters. Shall we proceed?" Sir Robert nodded at the Queen who then headed into the house.
"So close," Rose whispered to the Doctor and Rita.
"Yet so far" Rita smirked at her.
"Makerson and Ramsey, you will escort the property. Hurry up."
"Yes, sir." they nodded and headed for the carriage then took out a small box and carried to past the three. The Doctor looked at the box as it past intrigued as to what was inside.
"So what's in there, then?" The Doctor finally asked.
"Property of the Crown. You will dismiss any further thoughts, sir." He firmly told the Doctor "The rest of you go to the rear of the house. Assume your designated positions." he ordered his men.
"You heard the orders. Positions" One of the soldiers told the others. They then all followed going around to the back of the house.
The three followed the Queen and Sir Robert up to the observatory where Queen Victoria and Sir Robert were looking at his father's telescope. Rose and Rita peered over the three now including the Doctor to admire the telescope as well. "This, I take it, is the famous Endeavour." The Queen guessed.
"All my father's work." He nodded "Built by hand in his final years. Became something of an obsession. He spent his money on this rather than caring for the house or himself."
"I wish I'd met him. I like him." The Doctors smiled at Robert and then gleamed at the telescope "That thing's beautiful. Can I?" He gestured to it if he could touch it and look at it with more detail
"Help yourself" Sir Robert approved.
"It's amazing" Rita beamed and turned to Rose who nodded in agreement.
"Your father must have been proud" Rose then added.
The Doctor walked back over standing between Rose and Rita and looked through the telescope "It's a bit rubbish." The Doctor commented shooting down the telescope and wrinkled his nose. Rita rolled her eyes at him he just shrugged back at her "How many prisms has it got?" He asked but then it himself "Way too many. The magnification's gone right over the top." He pointed out "That's stupid kind of-" he stopped and then turned to the girls "Am I being rude again?" He raised a brow in question.
"Yep," they replied in unison pursuing their lips.
"But it's pretty. It's very pretty." The Doctor pointed out turning to the two girls who nodded in agreement.
"And the imagination of it should be applauded." Queen Victoria added.
"Mmm." Rose hummed "Thought you might disapprove, Your Majesty. Stargazing. Isn't that a bit fanciful? You could easily not be amused, or something?" Rita shook her head and grinned at the blonde finding her persistence to be funny. "No?" Rita looked up at the Doctor standing on the other side of Rose, looking down and shaking his head.
"This device surveys the infinite work of God. What could be finer?" The Queen asked, "Sir Robert's father was an example to us all." She turned to the man "A polymath, steeped in astronomy and sciences, yet equally well versed in folklore and fairytales."
"Stars and magic. I like him more and more."
"I thought you didn't believe in magic" Rita whispered to him who just frowned back at her in confusion. "Secrets" she smirked.
"Oh, my late husband enjoyed his company." She continued not hearing the pair "Prince Albert himself was acquainted with many rural superstitions, coming as he did from Saxe Coburg."
"That's Bavaria." The Doctor stated.
"When Albert was told about your local wolf, he was transported." Rita's eyes shot up staring at the woman the Doctor holding the same look.
"So, what's this wolf, then?" The Doctor asked.
"It's just a story," Robert spoke up looking very uncomfortable, Rita turned to him looking at the man with pity. She couldn't take knowing his future, knowing that she wouldn't be able to change or stop it without something like a paradox being created possibly harming Rose the Doctor and herself in the process, something that she couldn't see happen.
"Then tell it." The Doctor was persistent, Rita winced a little at that hating that he couldn't see what was going on with his own eyes then again she know he had no way of knowing what was going on below them in the cellar.
Robert stuttered for a moment and turned his head in the direction of the three bold men in the doorway "It's said that-" He was cut off by the man in the middle.
"Excuse me, sir." he cut in. "Perhaps her Majesty's party could repair to their rooms. It's almost dark." he smiled innocently a little too innocently for Rita's liking knowing what he had done or was going to do she shot him a glare that he did not see.
"Of course." Robert sighed "Yes, of course."
"And then supper." the Queen nodded "And could we find some clothes for Miss Tyler and Miss Stone? I'm tired of nakedness and strange clothes."
"It's not amusing, is it?" Rose smiled at the Queen who ignored her.
She turned to Robert "Sir Robert, your wife must have left some clothes. See to it." she turned back to the trio standing beside the huge telescope "We shall dine at seven, and talk some more of this wolf." Rita silently breathed deeply thinking to herself that she would rather not talk about the wolf. "After all, there is a full moon tonight."
"So there is, Ma'am," Robert commented and then bowed. The trio and the Queen walked out the room, Rita watching Robert closely wishing that she could help the poor man as the bold men stood behind Sit Robert.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"What do you think of the house then?" Rose asked Rita who thought for a moment sitting on the bed watching the blonde bring out clothes after clothes.
"Its, different than I thought it would be"
"Good different or bad different" Rose questioned not looking back while she scanned through the wardrobe.
"Just, different" Rita grinned at her reference to Christmas something the blonde most likely didn't think twice to remember, her face then fell as she remembered who else was in the room, her eyes darted around as she tried to remember where the housemaid was hiding.
Rose closed the wardrobe and moved over to another Rita's eyes then widened suddenly knowing what the blonde would find. The poor woman screamed and jumped back in fright as the housemaid looked at the pair scared to death.
"Hey, hey" Rita slowly walked over holding out a hand to try and calm the maid. "We're not here to hurt you" the maid cautiously stepped out of the wardrobe.
"Why were you in the wardrobe?" Rose calmly asked the woman in a soothing voice.
"They came through the house." The maid choked up tears forming in her eyes as she remembered the event. "In the excitement, they took the Steward and the Master, and my Lady."
Rose took the woman's hands and looked into her eyes Rita stood beside the woman with a hand on her shoulder trying to add as much comfort as she possibly could "Listen. we've got a friend." She spoke slowly so the woman could understand and calm down "He's called the Doctor. He'll know what to do. You've got to come with us."
"Rose we really should wait for the Doctor" Rita warned her calmly so she wouldn't scare the maid.
"No" Rose shook her head. "We should find him, he will know what to do," She said more to the woman than to Rita. "Right Rita"
"Right" she nodded knowing that she couldn't argue with Rose risking the new friendship as well as the course of events to come.
"Oh, but I can't, Miss." the maid said to Rose in a pleading voice now shaking, she looked at Rita begging for her to back the maid up Rita just slowly shook her head looking down.
"What's your name?" she asked the maid for Rose as she already knew her name.
"Flora." she choked up again, Rita moved her hand from the woman's shoulder and brought her in for a hug in an attempt to calm her.
"Flora, we'll be safe," Rose promised her, Rita knew that Rose couldn't keep that sort of promise knowing what would happen to many of the people in this house including possibly Flora. Rita couldn't remember if the poor woman died or survived the night, and she hoped it was the second option.
"There's more people arrived downstairs, soldiers and everything," Rose told her "and they can help us." She then looked into Flora's eyes and then up at Rita who nodded at the blonde before she looked back at Flora and with a serious expression told her: "I promise. Come on. Okay? Come on." She gestured for the maid and Rita to follow.

The contrast in policies between President Trump and Joe Biden presents very different visions for America going forward. The president wants to continue reducing Americans’ taxes; meanwhile, Biden aims to increase taxes by ending policies that raised deductibles and the child tax credit.
With three days left until the 2020 presidential election, both candidates are campaigning with a passion. Despite each candidate working across the nation to win votes, election data has already shown that Biden is struggling to get support from minority voters in battleground states; meanwhile, President Trump is raking in new endorsements.
Tumblr media
“President Trump Travels to Florida” (Public Domain) by The White House
Trafalgar Group findings show that President Trump is beating Biden in Michigan, yet another battleground state. Moreover, Breitbart News confirms that the president traveled to Michigan yesterday to campaign with voters and warn against the horror of Biden’s policies for workers.
Biden’s Policies vs. Michigan Workers
On Friday, the president spoke with a crowd of his supporters at a rally in Waterford Township. During his speech, Trump explains how Biden’s policies have hurt so many workers in Michigan, especially amid recoveries from COVID-19 shutdowns.
The president stated that Biden ultimately “twisted the knife” in Michiganders’ backs by supporting the NAFTA trade deal and China’s entry within the World Trade Organization. After explaining how Biden’s policies have worked against the best interest of Michigan workers, the president explained how his own policies are assisting Michiganders.
Only YOU can prevent this nightmare, America. pic.twitter.com/U5nSYrFL0o

After noting his replacement of NAFTA with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade deal, Trump explained how his presidency has engendered a boost in auto production. Finally, the president vowed that if he wins re-election on Tuesday, he’ll continue ensuring that auto jobs and other employment opportunities remain in Michigan.
Shutting Down the Country
While Michigan residents and many others have suffered from Biden-supported policies, the situations will become a lot worse if he gets into office.
The Second Amendment and Gun Rights are on the ballot November 3.

Trump mentioned this while in Waterford Township as well, noting the extent to which Biden would allow rioters to run amuck as president. This, along with Biden’s support for closing America’s economy down again, abolishing police, mandating face masks, etc., is what the Democrat ticket of 2020 has to offer Americans.
What do you think about the impact that Biden’s policies have had upon Michigan workers and others? Have you already voted in this year’s presidential election? We want to know your ideas in the comments section below!

Carnegie Clan The name Carnegie derives from the barony of this name in the parish of Carmyllie, Angus. The Carnegies of Southesk, the first family, were previously designated by the Gaelic township name of Balinhard, also in Angus, and are descended from John de Balinhard whose forebears held these lands. The name first appears in records about 1230 in connection with the Abbeys of Arbroath and Balmerino. John, the 1st of Carnegie died in 1370 and was succeeded by John Carnegie of that Ilk. The direct line of this family died out in the mid 16th century and the lands of Kinnaird were acquired by the Carnegies of Kinnaird, Brechin who hence restored the title Carnegie of that Ilk. From this family, John of Kinnaird was killed at Flodden in 1513 and his son Robert was captured at the Battle of Pinkie, knighted on his release and made an Ambassador to France. His son Sir John was loyal to Mary Queen of Scots till her death. He was succeeded by his brother, John whose son David, 8th of Kinnaird was created 1st Earl of Southesk in 1633. The Earldom of Northesk was given to John his brother who descended from Lord Lour, younger brother of the 1st Earl of Southesk, becoming Earls of Ethie. (The North and South Esk rivers cross the county of Angus). The 5th Earl was forfeited after his support of the house of Stuart in the 1715 Rising. He is commemmorated in the song in "The Piper o' Dundee". The 5th Earl had no issue thus the title passed to a cousin Sir James Carnegie of Pitarro. He reinacted the title lost after 1715 and became the 9th Earl of Southesk. The heir by his marriage to Princess Maud inherited the title of Duke of Fife and is second cousin to the Queen. The most famous bearer of the name was Andrew Carnegie, the son of a weaver whose family emigrated to Pennsylvannia. Starting work in a cotton mill at 13 he rose to become one of the leading railroad magnates and the foremost ironmaster in the United States. In his published work "The Gospel of Work" he wrote "The man who dies rich dies disgraced" and hence he spent the remainder of his life distributing his wealth and creating the Carnegie free libraries in Scotland. The present head of the Carnegies, the 11th Earl of Southesk, still lives at the clan seat in Angus; Kinnaird Castle, Brechin. CARNEGIE: The name originates in the Barony of Carnegy in Angus. The Carnegies of that Ilk, originally 'de Ballinhards', descended from Jocelyn de Ballinhard in the 13th century, whose descendant in 1358 obtained ownership of the Barony and adopted the name. In 1409 Duthac de Carnegie acquired the lands of Kinnaird by marriage to the heiress Mariota but perished on the field of Harlaw two years later. John, 4th of Kinnaird, fell with his king at Flodden in 1513 and family loyalty to the House of Stewart gained his successor position as a Lord of Session, and Mary Queen of Scots' ambassador. The 8th Laird, Sir David, was created Lord Carnegie in 1616, and by Charles I made Earl of Southesk in 1633. The Royalist 2nd Earl was imprisoned by Cromwell, and such abiding loyalty to the Stewarts led to the forfeiture of their estates following the 5th Earl's proclamation of the 'Old Pretender' at Montrose in 1715, and his participation in that Rising. This Earl being devoid of issue, the family representation passed to the 3rd Carnegie Baronet of Pitarro who repurchased the estates and to whose descendant the Earldom was restored in 1855 as 9th Earl. The 11th Earl married Princess Maud, daughter of Princess Louise, Duchess of Fife. and such union bringing also the Dukedom of Fife to the family. Almost concurrently with the Southesk Earldom, Sir John Carnegie, Lord Lour, brother of the 1st Earl, acquired the Earldom of Ethie in 1647, but had it altered to 'Northesk' in 1666. Two Northesk Earls were celebrated Admirals, the latter being 3rd-in-Command under Nelson at Trafalgar.
Tumblr media
From the earlier common lineage, and from the respective earldoms, many cadet families evolved throughout Angus and Kincardineshire. Perhaps the most universally celebrated of the name was Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) who from humble origin in Dunfermline, Fife, rose to make a vast fortune in railways and steel in America.

Eve of Something New Chapter 18: Unnoticed.
So this was honestly one of the chapters I enjoyed writing the most. This is one of my favorite episodes, and I enjoyed showing a slightly different side of it.
Also, I’m super proud that this is only a day late since I moved in with my boyfriend during the weekend and I was sure I wouldn’t have time to post.
Links to chapter one on Tumblr, FF.net and AO3.
This chapter is also available on FF.net and on AO3, as well as below the cut.
"What d'you think of this?" Rose asked, walking into the Console Room and showing the Doctor her short, torn overall, with a pink dress underneath and black tights.
"For the late 1970s?" the Doctor asked, eyeing her up and down. "You'd be better off in a bin bag. Listen," he added, turning away from her and pressing some keys on the console making 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' play our from the speakers. "Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Number one in 1979."
A smile appeared on Rose's face. "You're a punk!" she announced playfully as the Doctor sang along. "That's what you are, a big old punk, with a bit of rockabilly thrown in."
The Doctor smiled before asking, "Want to go and see him?"
"You mean in concert?" Rose asked, shocked.
"What else is a TARDIS for?" the Doctor shrugged. "I can take you to the Battle of Trafalgar, the Antigravity Olympics, Caesar crossing the Rubicon, or..." He smiled. "Ian Dury at the Top Rank, Sheffield, England, Earth, 21st November 1979, what d'you think?"
"Sheffield it is," Rose replied, and the Doctor pulled a lever.
"Hold on tight!" the Doctor called, sending the TARDIS flying into the Time Vortex, the sounds of Ian Dury playing in the background. "Ahhhh!!!" he screamed, hitting the console and causing the two of them to fall to the ground as the TARDIS landed.
They looked at each other for a moment before bursting to laughter.
"1979!" the Doctor called out, jumping to his feet and taking his coat. "Hell of a year. China invades Vietnam, The Muppet Movie, love that film. Margaret Thatcher, urgh! Skylab falls to Earth, with a little help from me. Nearly took off my thumb, and I like my thumb," he added, walking out of the TARDIS. "I need my thumb, I'm very attached to..." He looked up to see a group of guards pointing their weapons at him and raised his hands. "My thumb," he sighed. "1879. Same difference."
"You'll explain your presence," the one in charge said before marking at Rose, "And the nakedness of this girl."
"Are we in Scotland?" the Doctor asked with a smile.
"How can you be ignorant of that?" the Captain asked, a stern expression on his face.
"Oh, I'm dazed and confused," the Doctor said, immediately pulling on a Scottish accent. "I've been chasing this wee naked child over hill and over dale. In't that right, ye... timorous beastie?"
"Och, aye," Rose said, making the Doctor cringe. "I've been oot and aboot."
"No, don't do that," the Doctor muttered.
"Hoots mon?"
"No, really," the Doctor said. "Don't. Really."
"Identify yourself, sir," the Captain ordered.
"I'm Dr James McCrimmon, from the township of... Balamory. I have my credentials, if I may," he added, marking at his coat, and the Captain nodded. "As you can see," the Doctor said, showing them his psychic paper. "A doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. I trained under Dr Bell himself."
"Let them approach," a voice called from the carriage behind the guards.
"I don't think that's wise, ma'am –" the Captain started.
"Let them approach," the voice repeated.
"You will approach the carriage," the Captain ordered. "And show all due deference."
The Doctor and Rose approached as a guard opened the carriage door, revealing a woman dressed in regal clothing and looking at them sternly.
"Rose," the Doctor said, awestruck, "Might I introduce Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Empress of India, and Defender of the Faith."
"Rose Tyler, ma'am," Rose said as she curtsied. "And my apologies... for being so naked."
"I've had five daughters," the Queen said, waving the apology off, "It's nothing to me. But you, Doctor - show me these credentials."
The Doctor handed out the psychic paper and the Queen reached out for it, only to be cut off by a familiar voice.
"May I?"
The Queen nodded curtly and a delicate hand appeared from within the carriage, taking the psychic paper.
"Why didn't you say so immediately?" the voice asked. "It states clearly here that he has been appointed by the Lord Provost as my assistant in protecting you, My Queen." She leaned forwards, revealing herself to the Doctor and Rose. "He's a bit late, though," she added pointedly.
The Queen nodded, but neither Rose nor the Doctor was able to do anything but stare at the woman, wide-eyed. Finally, the Doctor managed to find his voice, though it was nothing more than a shocked croak.
"Evie?"
EMH
"Your Majesty," Eva curtsied, trying not to appear too nervous. Then again, she was standing in front of Queen Victoria. She probably earned the right to be nervous.
"Stand up, child," the Queen said, looking the girl up and down. "Why have you brought her here, Captain?"
"The girl appeared out of thin air, Your Majesty," the Captain explained. "A guard saw her in one of the inner gardens. She is clearly a part of another assassination attempt."
"I would never," Eva snarled, but a single glance from the Queen made her silent.
"I sure hope not," the Queen told her, before turning back to the Captain. "No one can appear out of thin air."
"I thought so, too," the Captain said, stepping towards Eva. "Then again, no one can do this, either."
He took out a knife and quickly slashed Eva's arm, making her cry out in pain as she clutched the wound. The Queen rose to her feet.
"What are you doing, Captain?" she asked, enraged that one of her guards would hurt an innocent, defenceless girl.
"Show her," the Captain ordered, ignoring the way Eva was glaring daggers at him. "I said, show her!"
"Step away from the girl, Captain," the Queen ordered. "Come here, child," she told Eva, who complied silently. "Would you mind showing me your arm?"
"Of course, Your Majesty," Eva said quietly, moving her hand away and revealing a nearly-healed cut.
The Queen eyed the skin, touching it to make sure she wasn’t imagining.
"What's your name?" she asked.
"Eva, Your Majesty," Eva said. "Evangeline Miller."
"Captain, please take Miss Miller to one of the guestrooms," the Queen ordered. "Call a maid to assist her and tell the cooks she would join me at my table for supper."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Eva said quietly. "You're too kind."
"Nonsense, girl," the Queen told her. "Oh, and Captain?"
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"If word would get to me of anyone who had hurt the girl, they would be thrown out of these walls before they knew what hit them," the Queen said. "Are we clear?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," the Captain said before leading a very confused and tired Eva away.
EMH
Eva was angry. Not just pissed, or annoyed, but proper angry, fuming, about to rip the Doctor's head off. The Doctor was mostly surprised, though slightly scared. He quickly shook himself off, looking back at the Queen and Eva.
"Right," he said quickly. "Then let me ask, Miss, why's her Majesty travelling by road, when there's a train all the way to Aberdeen?"
"A tree on the line," Eva replied simply.
"An accident?" the Doctor questioned.
"I am the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland," the Queen told him. "Everything around me tends to be planned."
"An assassination attempt," Eva explained.
"What, seriously?" Rose asked. "There's people out to kill you?"
"I'm used to staring down the barrel of a gun," was the Queen's only reply.
"Sir Robert MacLeish lives but ten miles hence," Eva said, looking at the Captain, who nodded.
"We've sent word ahead," he told her. "He'll shelter us, then we'll reach Balmoral tomorrow."
"This doctor and his... 'timorous beastie' will come with us," the Queen said.
"Yes, ma'am," the Captain nodded.
"We'd better get moving, it's almost nightfall," Eva said. "And there are stories of wolves in these parts."
"Fanciful tales, intended to scare the children," the Queen dismissed. "But good for the blood, I think. Drive on."
The carriage doors closed and they resumed moving, and the Queen turned to Eva.
"Is this the Doctor you've spoken so often about?" she asked.
"Yes," Eva replied.
"Then I suppose you'll be leaving my guard soon."
"You will manage without me, My Queen," Eva told her. "You will live for many more years, I simply know so."
"If you say so, my All-Knower," the Queen nodded. "But for now, let us head to Torchwood Estate."
"Yes," Eva nodded, leaning back before turning back to the Queen. "Just thought I should warn you, Rose – the blonde – bet against the Doctor that she could make you say 'I am not amused'."
"Well," the Queen huffed. "I suppose her attempts would be very not amusing as they are."
"They would, My Queen," Eva nodded, leaning back once more. "But I still thought you needed to understand her odd behaviour as we went on."
"And I am very grateful for that," the Queen said. "As I am for anything else that you had already done."
"Don't mention it, My Queen," Eva nodded at her, hoping that by the time the night ended, the Queen won't hate her like Eva knew she hated the Doctor. "It was an honour, and a privilege."
EMH
As the carriage arrived to Torchwood Estate, a guard opened the door to let the Queen out. Eva followed shortly after, but not before she made sure her bow and sheath were concealed by the robe she wore.
"Your Majesty," Sir Robert said, coming towards the Queen and bowing.
"Sir Robert," the Queen told him. "My apologies for the emergency. And how is Lady Isobel?"
"She's..." Sir Robert sent a quick glance to the bold guards behind him. "Indisposed, I'm afraid. She's gone to Edinburgh for the season. And she's taken the cook with her, the kitchens are barely stocked," he added hurriedly. "I wouldn't blame your Majesty if you wanted to ride on."
"Not at all!" the Queen said, oblivious to his nervousness. "I've had quite enough carriage exercise, and this is... charming. If rustic. It's my first visit to this house," she explained to Eva for what seemed like the hundredth time. "My late husband spoke of it often. The Torchwood Estate."
"Shall we go inside?" Eva asked, looking at the guards and stewards and counting them, storing the information in her head for later use.
"My apologies, Miss," Sir Robert said, "But you are...?"
"My Ward," the Queen said. "And I expect you to treat her with the proper respect."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Sir Robert nodded.
"And please excuse the naked girl," the Queen added, nodding at Rose's direction.
"Sorry," the girl muttered shyly.
"She's a feral child," the Doctor explained. "I bought her for sixpence in old London town. It was her or the Elephant Man."
"Thinks he's funny, but I'm so not amused," Rose said. "What do you think, ma'am?"
The Queen exchanged a look with Eva, who smiled knowingly, before replying. "It hardly matters," she said. "Shall we proceed?"
Sir Robert nodded nervously, following the Queen inside while trying to avoid eye contact with the stewards.
From the corner of her eye, Eva saw Rose lean closer to the Doctor and whisper, "So close."
"Mackeson and Ramsay," she said aloud. "You will escort the property, hurry up."
"Yes, ma'am," the guards said, taking out a box from within the carriage.
"So what's in there, then?" the Doctor asked.
"Property of the Crown," Captain Reynolds said.
"Or, in other words," Eva added, "None of your business. The rest of you, go to the rear," she told the guards. "Assume your designated positions."
"You heard the orders," Captain Reynolds repeated. "Positions!"
The Doctor and Rose exchanged a glance before looking at Eva, but she was already walking into the Estate, ignoring their existence. The Doctor swallowed hard, knowing something was wrong, and the duo followed.
EMH
"This, I take it, is the famous endeavour," the Queen said as she followed Sir Robert into a room containing an enormous telescope.
"All my father's work," Sir Robert said. "Built by hand, in his final years. It became something of an obsession. He spent his money on this, rather than caring for the house, or himself."
"I wish I'd met him," the Doctor commented. "I like him. That thing's beautiful, can I...?"
"Help yourself," Sir Robert said, and the Doctor approached.
"What did he model it on?" he asked.
"I know nothing about it," Sir Robert admitted. "To be honest, most of us thought him... shall we say, eccentric. I wish now I'd spent more time with him," he added, and Eva glanced at the bald stewards once more. "And listened to his stories."
"It's a bit rubbish," the Doctor commented, and Eva stepped forwards, knowing what was coming next. "How many prisms has it got? Way too many! The magnification's gone right over the top, that's a stupid –"
Eva smacked him over the head to make him shut up. "Rude!" she hissed.
"But it's pretty!" the Doctor quickly said, rubbing his head. "It's very pretty."
"And the imagination of it should be applauded," the Queen added, stepping closer to it as well.
"I thought you might disapprove, Your Majesty," Rose commented, and Eva sighed. "Star gazing. Isn't that a bit fanciful? You could easily... not be amused, or something." The Queen looked her up and down disapprovingly. "No?"
"This device surveys the infinite work of God," the Queen said, and Eva smiled.
"What could be finer?" she asked. "Sir Robert's father was an example to us all. A polymath, steeped in astronomy and the sciences, yet equally well versed in folklore and fairytales."
"Stars and magic," the Doctor said with a smile. "I like him more and more."
"Oh, my late husband enjoyed his company," the Queen said with a sigh. "Prince Albert himself was acquainted with many rural superstitions, coming as he did from Saxe-Coburg."
"That's Bavaria," the Doctor whispered in Rose's ear.
"When Albert was told about your local wolf, he was transported," the Queen went on.
"What's this wolf, then?" the Doctor asked.
"It's just a story," Sir Robert said, glancing at the stewards.
"Then tell it."
Sir Robert took a deep breath. "It's said –" he started, but the head-stewards almost immediately cut him off.
"Excuse me, sir," he said. "Perhaps her Majesty's party could repair to their rooms. It's almost dark."
"Of course," Sir Robert said, forcing a smile. "Yes, of course."
"And then supper," the Queen added. "And could we find some clothes for Miss Tyler? I'm tired of nakedness."
"It's not amusing, is it?" Rose tried.
"Please, stop," Eva said with an eye-roll. "Sir Robert, your wife must have left some clothes. See to it."
"We shall dine at seven, and talk some more of this wolf," the Queen announced. "After all, there is a full moon tonight."
"So there is, ma'am," Sir Robert said, and the group walked out of the room, Eva staying the longest.
As she was about to pass through the doorway, the head-steward grabbed her arm.
"You are awfully lacking manners, as the Queen's Ward," he hissed at her.
"I think you'll find out I'm more than just a simple Ward, Father," she told him, yanking her arm out of his grasp and walking out.
EMH
It was Candlemas day, and the Queen hosted an event in her court to celebrate. Candles lit the garden Eva was in, their light shining off the dress she wore. Several men had already asked her for a dance but Eva declined them all, knowing that in these times a dance was always something more than simply a dance.
The last thing she needed was to accidently get engaged while she was here.
It had already been three months since the Queen decided to take her as a Ward, and Eva's nerves were wrecked. She now knew how to sew, play the piano and weave – all of which were skills she doubted she would ever need.
Thankfully, the Queen also agreed for bow and arrow lessons, so the skill Eva had learned briefly from Robin Hood became not only something she was very good at, but also a means of escape from the etiquette lessons and the explanations of which fork was to be used at which course of the meal.
She looked at the people, a glass of simple drink in her hand as the Queen entered the garden. She, along with everybody else, stopped what they were doing and bowed respectfully, but Eva saw from the corner of her eye a man who hadn’t.
A man who was holding a gun and aiming it at the Queen.
This was wrong, she knew it was. There weren’t supposed to be any attempts on the Queen's life in this year. If she remembered correctly – and she was certain that she was, as she took a course on Queen Victoria's reign while studying History at university – the next assassination attempt was due only in a couple of years.
"Her Majesty!" she called out, causing the Queen and several guards to turn and look at her. "Duck!"
She grasped a bow and arrow that were laid in the garden as decoration and shot the man, making him drop to the ground but not before a bullet escaped his gun. She looked at the Queen just in time to see a guard moving her out of the way and getting hit by the bullet himself.
Not wasting a moment, she ran to him.
"Where were you shot?" she asked him, cutting straight to business. There was no time for courtesies when life was on the line.
"My... My chest," the guard muttered.
"Chest," Eva repeated, looking for the gunshot wound. "You're lucky," she told him when she found it. "It's more shoulder than chest, so it most likely didn’t fracture your lung. The main danger right now is blood loss."
"The Queen," the guard said through ragged breaths. "Is the Queen safe?"
Eva looked up to see a guard escorting the Queen to safety as another called for a doctor.
"She's safe," she told him, ripping the hem of her dress and tying it around his shoulder. "Were you hurt anywhere else?"
"No, Miss," the guard said before laughing weakly. "I survived the war in Afghan, only to be shot in the Queen's garden."
"You survived the war in Afghan to save the Queen's life," Eva told him. "Is there a greater cause?"
"I didn’t think I was that important," he replied. "My entire unit was killed and I was the only survivor. I came back and married my beloved Mary. She's pregnant now."
"That is also a great cause," Eva told him with a smile.
"We have to ask you to step away, Miss," a voice said from behind Eva.
"Just a moment," she replied, not taking her eyes off the guard as she asked, "What's your name?"
"John," he managed out.
"Get better, John," Eva told him. "You have one amazing story to tell your child."
"We really need you to step away, Miss,"
"Alright," Eva nodded, standing up before turning to the doctor. "This man just saved the Queen's life. Take good care of him."
"Of course," the doctor nodded, and Captain Reynolds pulled Eva away.
"Were you hurt?" he asked, scanning her worriedly.
"No," Eva replied. "It's... It's John's blood."
"John?" the Captain asked before realization dawned over him. "Oh, Guard Anderson."
"He has a wife, Mary," Eva went on. "She's pregnant with his child."
"I'll send someone to call for her," the Captain said immediately. "For now, I'll call a maid to your room to help you wash over. The Queen asked me to tell you she wanted to talk to you when you're done."
Eva nodded silently, allowing him to lead her away as she wondered what the Queen wanted her for.

The Unseen Embassy
“...right. Could you just start from the top again?”
The toft from the Crown Prosecution Service looked dumb founded through the one way glass. It mirrored the expression of the man on the other side of the glass. He was stood on the chair, staring at the florescent tube lighting in its metal cage. He wasn’t even squinting, those dark eyes wide open in slack jawed wonder.
“Of course.” The Chief Inspector incharge of the Murder Team dutifully opened his note book, and began to elaborate the bullet points he’d written down. “At 3am this morning, Transport For London got a silent alarm from Bakerloo, the old Trafalgar tube stop they closed up in the 70’s. It’s used for ventilation now for the rest of the system, and TFL have it wired in case someone with more greed than brains thinks of grabbing some of the gear inside. Security from G4S who run the site dispatch a team, than at 5am we get the call head in.”
Flip.
“5.30am SCO-19 arrive, as well as the usual three rings of the circus when something big happens in London. The Marksmen go down, we have uniforms with tasers and batons on the surface and covering the connected Tube egresses. A brief one sided firefight is exchanged with the suspect, identified as a IC-1/9 male with dark hair and bladed weapon.” The Inspector nods towards the glass. “Forensics go in a little after that to begin processing the scene and carrying out the bodies.”
Flip.
“One G4S operative IC-1, male, dead from decapitation. And one IC-1/9 male with bladed weapon felled by the Police Artisan Rifles.” The CPS lawyer turns and glared balefully at the policeman for the ill conceived joke. “Both bodies are transported to University College for autopsy...and when the van arrives the IC-1/9 male without his weapon takes a hostage in the form of a hospital porter. Hospital says he’ll recover from his injuries.”
Pause.
“Wait you said he was dead.”
“I did.” The Chief Inspector nodded. “Got me a whole line of Uniforms and DCI’s who can attest to the fact that guy was wheeled out of Bakerloo riding the glad bag express. I have a Constable from the Firearms Unit ready to testify that he put a bullet right between the man’s eyes when he came charging at them in the tunnels. And I have a very pale, quite sickly looking blonde in a paper bunny suit and slippers, ready to hold up a jar of red stuff and call it ‘ejected galeal material’. Brain splatter to you and me.”
He went back to his notes to fill in the rest of the silence.
“IC-1/9 then requested to know if he was in the township of London by the Thames. And when this was indeed relayed to him to be true, he released his hostage and requested to be taken to the High Warden...whoever that might be. Given the state he was in, and the state he left someone else in, we convinced him that was indeed what we were doing. And that now he is awaiting the arrival of the High Warden...who ever that might be.”
He closed his book, and then eyed the CPS lawyer.
“Yes we did read him his rights. He has forgone the right to counsel, and he has been quite chatty. Not much of a English speaker, though the interpreter can’t figure out what language he’s muttering on in. Something Mandarin/Slavic-y like, except it’s not like that. At all.” He said, before flipping his book open again. “Though he did give a name. ‘Derowen MacFie’. We’ve glanced at the National Police Database and that’s come up goose eggs on what name. |If it’s even his name”
“It's not his name, though points for trying. Though we’d not be doing a good job of our work if you could look us up in the Yellow Pages.”
The Inspector and the CPS goon spun about, finding a well dressed man in a Saville Row suit and geometrically perfect goatee in white hair.
“SCO-0 will be taking over from here.” The man smiled wolfishly. “Don’t worry boys, the Unseen Embassy is here to keep the grey hairs from your head. After you’ve signed the paperwork, of course.”
He held up a small silver knife.
“Which one of you wants to sign the Unofficial Secrets Act first?”

"INTOXICATED IN CAR GETS WEEK IN JAIL," Toronto Star. September 11, 1943. Page 8. --- Court Told Churchville Man At Wheel of Car In Ditch ---- Oakville, Sept. 11 - Emerson Letty, Churchville, was sentenced to seven days in Milton jail yesterday on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle by Magistrate W. N. Robinson. The accused was ordered to pay costs of $19.50. His permit was suspended and his car impounded.
Lou Patterson, Trafalgar township constable, testified that on Sept. 5 he found a car in the ditch west of Postville. Accused was intoxicated and sitting behind the wheel, he said.
Letty told court he was coming home from a corn roast at Milton, and that a friend was driving the car when it went into the ditch. The friend had a chance to get a ride home and left him, he added.
"Why didn't you have your friend here in court?" the magistrate asked. "I didn't want to get him into trouble," accused replied.
On a second charge of not having an operator's permit an additional $10 and costs or 10 days was imposed.

"'HEAVIER SENTENCES' WARNING OF COURT," Toronto Star. April 29, 1943. Page 8. ---- Stealing Irreplacable Goods to Bring Severe Penalties at Milton ---- Milton, April 29 - "I'm going to do what I can to stop this sort of thing," Magistrate W. N. Robinson said when he sent Pte. Charles Golden, Milton, to the reformatory for three months definite and two months indefinite. Golden pleaded guilty to stealing two tires, two tubes and two wheels from D. Sargent, Trafalgar township, Feb. 6.
"Regardless of what other magistrates do, I'm not going to make future sentences light on stolen articles which cannot be replaced during the war," he said.
Provincial Constable John Reavley read a statement, which, he said, he took from accused at the time of his arrest. It read: "I was with two others in my car when we passed Sargent's gate. One said there were some tires we could get. They took a wrench and a jack and went back to the car and got the tires. The tires were sold and I got about six dollars."

Manual training was urged included in all rural high schools, to aid farm boys in the maintenance of present farm machinery. The price ceiling was asked removed from all form produce, allowing the rise and fall of supply and demand to fix the selling price.

“Sit-Down Strike Revealed Of Laborers In Halton,” Toronto Star. October 25, 1939. Page 08. --- War Commodity Increase Said Cause - Boost Wages Two Cents --- FIRST IN HISTORY --- Milton, Oct. 25. - The first sit-down strike among county employees in Halton county’s history occurred recently, it was disclosed yesterday at the session of county council.
The men, county laborers on a project in Trafalgar township, struck against their wages of 28 cents an hour, according to County Engineer Roy Smith. The strike was very brief, it was added.
The matter came to light when council voted the men a wage increase of two cents an hour, bringing their hourly wage to 30 cents.
Explaining the matter to council, the county engineer laid the blame for the strike on the increased cost of commodities due to war conditions.
‘I must confess a great sympathy for the working man and I like to see him, get anything reasonable,’ the engineer asserted. ‘We don’t pretend to give these men steady work the year around.’
He recommended the two cents an hour increase and said the number of county employees was limited. The laborers had ‘seemed dissatisfied’ with the 28-cents wage Mr. Smith added.
‘The strike happened in Trafalgar township for which I’m sorry as it is the first we’ve ever had,’ declared Reeve Victor Hall.
Other reeves expressed their opposition to the strike method as a means of obtaining wage increases. Reeve George Gordon of Nassagaweya described the strike as ‘a miserable way of getting an increase.’ Reeve James Hewson of Oakville said the strike was ‘detestable.’ Both, however, favored the wage increase.
‘A man should sell his labor to the highest bidder and then be satisfied,’ declared Reeve John McNiven of Nelson township. ‘I’ve had only one gang go on strike and they are still on strike as far as I’m concerned.’
In an interview today, Reeve Hewson of Oakville said he understood the strike lasted ‘only about an hour.’ The strike occurred about a ‘week or 10 days ago,’ he added, and the men were members of a regular county working crew.
‘I didn’t like the way it was done,’ he said. ‘It was unnecessary. If they had stated their case we would have granted the increase.’

“Maid Steals Employers’s $500, Was Out Drinking With Soldier,” Toronto Star. November 22, 1941.
